Experimental studies on flow visualization and heat transfer measurements of finned surface in a narrow duct were carried out to understand the flow behavior and its effect on heat transfer. In this experiment, short rectangular fins were attached to a surface (endwall) with having inclination angle of 20° and exposed to air flow. Several flow visualization results reveal that horse shoe vortex was formed just at the front of the fin whereas the main longitudinal vortex was formed by the side top edge of the fin. Some important features of the vortex structure, size and flow reattachment positions were noticed from the smoke flow visualization. Detailed heat transfer distributions were discussed from the thermal image. Nusselt number shows that the finned surface achieved average heat transfer enhancement at a factor of four times than that of without fins.  相似文献

Piezoelectric fan is a promising option for cooling microelectronic devices owing to its unique features such as no electromagnetic noise, low power consumption and minimum space requirement. The recent interest is to integrate the piezoelectric fans (piezofans) with heat sink; this idea is widely accepted and researches are still underway. This article presents experimental analysis on the effects of tip gap (δ) and amplitude of piezofan vibration (α) on the heat transfer characteristics of finned heat sinks. Two heat sink configurations, namely A and B (with two and four fins respectively) each of which is arranged with three piezofans, are considered for the study. The transient temperature distributions for cases with and without piezofans are obtained for both the configurations, and compared. The heat transfer coefficient, thermal impedance, Nusselt number and Reynolds number are investigated as functions of δ and α. The effect of α on the fan effectiveness is also analyzed. It is observed that the configuration B has better cooling performance compared to A. Among the tested ranges of δ and α, the case with least tip gap (δ?=?0.03) and highest amplitude (α?=?5.29) is found to be the best; at this setting, the fan effectiveness is increased to almost 4?times compared to the case without piezofans.  相似文献

In order to study cross flow induced vibration of heat exchanger tube bundles, a new fluid–structure interaction model based on surface vorticity method is proposed. With this model, the vibration of a flexible cylinder is simulated at Re=2.67 × 104, the computational results of the cylinder response, the fluid force, the vibration frequency, and the vorticity map are presented. The numerical results reproduce the amplitude‐limiting and non‐linear (lock‐in) characteristics of flow‐induced vibration. The maximum vibration amplitude as well as its corresponding lock‐in frequency is in good agreement with experimental results. The amplitude of vibration can be as high as 0.88D for the case investigated. As vibration amplitude increases, the amplitude of the lift force also increases. With enhancement of vibration amplitude, the vortex pattern in the near wake changes significantly. This fluid–structure interaction model is further applied to simulate flow‐induced vibration of two tandem cylinders and two side‐by‐side cylinders at similar Reynolds number. Promising and reasonable results and predictions are obtained. It is hopeful that with this relatively simple and computer time saving method, flow induced vibration of a large number of flexible tube bundles can be successfully simulated. The present numerical study has dealt with the enhancement of latent heat Release by using plate type fins mounted on the vertical cooling surface in the rectangular vessel packed with molten salt as a latent heat storage material. It was found that the fin thickness and pitch exerted an influence on solidification heat transfer in a liquid layer of a nitric molten salt. The numerical results elucidated the flow pattern, velocity profile and heat transfer rate in the melted liquid layer.  相似文献

The heat transfer from a surface heated with constant heat flux to an oscillating vertical annular liquid column having an interface with the atmosphere is investigated experimentally in the present paper. The analysis is carried out for the case of different oscillation frequencies while the displacement amplitude remains constant. Based on the experimental data a correlation equation is obtained for the cycle-averaged Nusselt number as a function of kinetic Reynolds number.  相似文献

This study analyzes the use of a carbon fiber epoxy heat sink for evaporator surface enhancement in a FC-72 thermosyphon. The pin-fin heat sink features 945 small-cross-section (1.27 mm by 0.965 mm) fins fabricated with an integral base plate. These fins have a high thermal conductivity (500 W/m K) along the length of the fin. The influence of heat load, thermosyphon fill volume, and condenser operating temperature on the overall thermal performance is examined. The results of this experiment provide significant insight into the possible implementation and potential benefits of carbon-fiber heat sink technology in two-phase flow leading to significant improvements in thermal management strategies for advanced electronics.  相似文献

An analysis is presented for fully developed laminar convective heat transfer of non-Newtonian power-law fluids in pipes with internal longitudinal fins and uniform outside wall temperature. The governing momentum and energy equations have been solved numerically, with the influence of fin conductance. The distributions of fin temperature, fluid temperature and local heat flux (both at finned and unfinned surfaces) are presented. These are shown to be strongly dependent on finned pipe geometry, fluid flow behavior index and the fin conductance. Values of overall Nusselt number indicated significant heat transfer enhancement over finless pipes. The flow behavior index affects the no. of fins which maximizes the overall Nusselt number.  相似文献

A numerical study of the effects of the number and distribution of fins on the storage characteristics of a cylindrical latent heat energy storage system (LHESS) was conducted. Due to the low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) used in LHESS, fins were added to the system to increase the rate of heat transfer and charging. Finite elements were used to implement the developed numerical method needed to study and solve for the phase change heat transfer (melting of PCM) encountered in a LHESS during charging. The effective heat capacity method was applied in order to account for the large amount of latent energy stored during melting of the PCM and the moving interface between the solid and liquid phases. The effects of increasing the number and distribution of fins on the melting rate of the PCM were studied for configurations having between 0 and 27 fins for heat transfer fluid (HTF) velocities of 0.05 and 0.5?m/s. Results show that the overall heat transfer rate to the PCM increases with an increase in the number of fins irrespective of the HTF velocity. It was also observed that the total amount of energy stored after 12?h increases nearly linearly with the addition of fins up to 12 fins; further addition of fins increasing the total energy stored by ever smaller amounts.  相似文献

In the present study, the potential of rectangular fins with 30° and 90° angle and 10 mm offset from the horizontal direction for heat transfer enhancement in a plate fin heat exchanger is numerically evaluated with conjugated heat transfer approach. The rectangular fins are mounted on the flat plate channel. The numerical computations are performed by solving a steady, three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equation and an energy equation by using Fluent software program. Air is taken as working fluid. The study is carried out at Re = 400 and inlet temperatures, velocities of cold and hot air are fixed as 300, 600 K and 1.338, 0.69 m/s, respectively. Colburn factor j versus Re design data is presented by using Fluent. The results show that the heat transfer is increased by 10 % at the exit of channel with fin angle of 30° when compared to channel without fin for counter flow. The heat transfer enhancement with fins of 30° and 90° for different values of Reynolds number with 300, 500 and 800 and for varying fin heights, fin intervals and also temperature distributions of fluids on the top and bottom surface of the channel are investigated for parallel and counter flow.  相似文献

Vertical enclosures with conducting fins attached to the cold wall were considered. Side walls were kept at constant but different temperatures, while horizontal top and bottom walls were insulated. A conjugate formulation was used for the mathematical formulation of the problem, and a computer program based on the control volume approach and the SIMPLE algorithm was developed. Computations were performed to investigate the effects of the fin configuration and Rayleigh number on the flow structure and heat transfer. It was observed that the heat transfer rate through an enclosure can be controlled by attaching fins to the wall(s) of the enclosure. At low Rayleigh numbers (conduction controlled regime), the heat transfer rate increases with the increasing number of fins and the fin length. However, at higher Rayleigh numbers (convection dominant regimes), the heat transfer rate can be decreased or increased by properly choosing the number of fins and the fin lengths. Heat transfer characteristics of pulsated turbulent pipe flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Heat Transfer characteristics of pulsated turbulent pipe flow under different conditions of pulsation frequency, amplitude and Reynolds number were experimentally investigated. The pipe wall was kept at uniform heat flux. Reynolds number was varied from 5000 to 29 000 while frequency of pulsation ranged from 1 to 8 Hz. The results show an enhancement in the local Nusselt number at the entrance region. The rate of enhancement decreased as Re increased. Reduction of heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher frequencies and the effect of pulsation is found to be significant at high Reynolds number. It can be concluded that the effect of pulsation on the mean Nusselt numbers is insignificant at low values of Reynolds number. Received on 29 June 1998  相似文献

The fully developed laminar incompressible flow inside a curved duct of elliptical cross-section with four thin, internal longitudinal fins is studied using the improved CVP method. We present numerical results for the friction factor and an investigation of the effect of the fin height and the Dean number on the flow. It is found that the friction factor increases for large fins and for high Dean numbers and that in some cases, it has a strong dependence on the cross-sectional aspect ratio. The thermal results show that the heat transfer rate is enhanced by the internal fins and that it depends on the aspect ratio.  相似文献

A numerical study of the effects of the thermal fluid velocity on the storage characteristics of a cylindrical latent heat energy storage system (LHESS) was conducted. The effects of the heat transfer fluid (HTF) velocity on the melting rate of the PCM were studied for configurations having between 0 and 18 fins. Results show that the overall heat transfer rate to the PCM increases with an increase in the HTF velocity. However, the effect of the HTF velocity was observed to be small in configurations having very few fins, owing to the large residual thermal resistance offered by the PCM. However, the effect of the HTF velocity becomes more pronounced with addition of fins; since the thermal resistance on the PCM side of the LHESS is significantly reduce by the large number of fins in the system.  相似文献

Measured were pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics with uniform axial heat input using air as the working fluid in both the entrance and fully developed regions of annular tubes with wave-like longitudinal fins. Five series of experiments were performed for turbulent flow and heat transfer in the annular tubes with number of waves equal to 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20, respectively. The test tube has a double-pipe structure with the inner blocked tubes as an insertion. The wave-like fins are in the annulus and span its full width. The friction factor and Nusselt number in the fully developed region were obtained. The friction factor and Nusselt number can be well corrected by a power-law correction in the Reynolds number range tested. In order to evaluate the thermal performance of the longitudinal finned tubes over a plain circular tube, comparisons were made under three conditions: (1) identical pumping power; (2) identical pressure drop and (3) identical mass flow. It was found that under the three constraints all the wave-like finned tubes can enhance heat transfer with the tube with wave number 20 being superior. Finally, discussion on the enhancement mechanism is conducted and a general correlation for the fully developed heat transfer is provided, which can cover all the fifty data of the five tubes with a mean deviation of 9.3%.  相似文献

A numerical study has been carried out on inclined open shallow cavities, which are formed by a wall and horizontal fins. Constant heat flux is applied on the surface of the wall inside the cavity while its other surface was kept isothermal. The wall and the fins are conductive. Conjugate heat transfer by natural convection and conduction is studied by numerically solving equations of mass, momentum and energy. Streamlines and isotherms are produced, heat and mass transfer is calculated. A parametric study is carried out using following parameters: Rayleigh number from 106 to 1012, conductivity ratio from 1 to 60, open cavity aspect ratio from 1 to 0.125, dimensionless end wall thickness from 0.05 to 0.20, horizontal walls from 0.01 to 0.15 and inclination of the end wall from 90° to 45°. It is found that the volume flow rate and Nusselt number are a decreasing function of the cavity aspect ratio, horizontal fin thickness and conductivity ratio. They are an increasing function of end wall thickness and inclination angle, except in the latter case optima exist at high Rayleigh numbers.  相似文献

This paper investigates the heat transfer characteristics from thin strips pin fins due to their exposure to a single circular downward air jet impingement. Five aluminum specimens were considered; each one has a rectangular base of 84 mm × 78 mm and it has an array of about 300 thin strips pin fins. A test rig consists mainly of air compressor; nozzle and protractor mechanism was setup. Experiments were done to find out the effects of attack angle, Reynolds number, nozzle-to-target spacing, lateral pitch and parallel pitch among the fins on the heat transfer characteristics. Empirical correlations were deduced to describe the experimental data. A CFD-numerical model was introduced to monitor the flow characteristics on a scale of more details than that possible in the experimental work. The comparison among the results of the present work and those by the literature shows about 50% improvement in heat transfer characteristics rather than the single jet impingement onto flat plates, cylindrical surfaces, ribbed walls and multiple jets impingement onto flat plates.  相似文献

A series of experiments has been conducted in which a pulsed air jet is impinged upon a heated surface for the purpose of enhancing heat transfer relative to the corresponding steady air jet. Traditional variables such as jet to plate spacing, Reynolds number, and pulse frequency have been investigated. One additional flow variable – the duty cycle – representing the ratio of pulse cycle on-time to total cycle time is introduced and shown to be significant in determining the level of heat transfer enhancement. Specifically, heat transfer enhancement exceeding 50% is shown for a variety of operating conditions. In each case, the duty cycle producing the best heat transfer is shown to depend upon each of the other flow parameters. Recommendations are made for further experimentation into optimizing the duty cycle parameter for any particular application.  相似文献
