The adsorption behavior of a low charge density cationic polyelectrolyte to cellulosic fibers has been studied. Cationic dextran served as a model polyelectrolyte, as it can be prepared over a range in molecular mass and charge density. The adsorption behavior of the cationic dextran was measured in electrolyte-free conditions using polyelectrolyte titration techniques. By fluorescent labeling the cationic dextran, the extent to which adsorption occurs inside the porous structure was further determined by fluorescent confocal laser scanning microscopy. Cationic dextran having a sufficiently low charge density adsorbed into the pores, although the extent the cationic dextran adsorbed was governed by the molecular mass. The adsorption behavior of the cationic dextran was also studied in various electrolyte concentrations. The adsorbed mass monotonically decreased with increasing electrolyte, as the electrostatic interaction with the substrate was more effectively screened. This behavior also suggests that the interactions between adsorbed polyelectrolyte chains, i.e. lateral correlation effects, are negligible for low charge density polyelectrolytes. Finally, the effect of having a preadsorbed layer of cationic dextran on the adsorption behavior was determined in electrolyte-free conditions using fluorescent double staining techniques. The preadsorbed cationic dextran had almost no effect on the adsorption of low molecular mass fractions. Low molecular mass fractions directly adsorbed into the pore structure, as opposed to adsorbing to a free surface and diffusing into the pores. It was also shown that cationic dextran can be selectively adsorbed to different locations, such that the surface of a porous substrate can be treated uniquely from the bulk.  相似文献

A low charge density polyelectrolyte with a high graft density of 45 units long poly(ethylene oxide) side-chains has been synthesized. In this comb polymer, denoted PEO(45)MEMA:METAC-2, 2 mol% of the repeating methacrylate units in the polymer backbone carry a permanent positive charge and the remaining 98 mol% a 45 unit long PEO side-chain. Here we describe the solution conformation of this polymer and its association with an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS. It will be shown that the polymer can be viewed as a stiff rod with a cross-section radius of gyration of 29 A. The cross section of the rod contracts with increasing temperature due to decreased solvency of the PEO side-chains. The anionic surfactant associates to a significant degree with PEO(45)MEMA:METAC-2 to form soluble complexes at all stoichiometries. A cooperative association is observed as the free SDS concentration approaches 7 mM. At saturation the number of SDS molecules associated with the polymer amounts to 10 for each PEO side-chain. Two distinct populations of associated surfactants are observed, one is suggested to be molecularly distributed over the comb polymer and the other constitutes small micellar-like structures at the periphery of the aggregate. These conclusions are reached based on results from small-angle neutron scattering, static light scattering, NMR, and surface tension measurements.  相似文献

Microcalorimetric techniques, combined with turbidity measurements, were used to study the thermodynamics of self-assembling of hydrophobically modified cationic polysaccharides and their mixtures with oppositely charged surfactants in aqueous solution. The studied polyelectrolytes were a series of polymers based on dextran having pendant N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-N,N-dimethyl-N-alkylammonium chloride groups randomly distributed along the polymer backbone. The parameters for their micellization process are evaluated from the results of the observed dilution enthalpy curves and compared with those of the related cationic surfactants (DTAC and CTAC). The microcalorimetric results for the mixed systems (polyelectrolytes with oppositely charged surfactants) are used along with turbidity measurements to characterize systematically the thermodynamics of their interaction. The phase behavior is described and the interaction enthalpies are derived from the differences between the observed enthalpy curves with and without polyelectrolyte. Therefore, we discuss in detail the effect of changing the alkyl chain length of polyelectrolyte pendant groups, the molecular weight of the dextran backbone, and the temperature of the measurements on the interactions between polyelectrolyte and surfactant.  相似文献

In nonequimolar solutions of a cationic and an anionic surfactant, vesicles bearing a net charge can be spontaneously formed and apparently exist as thermodynamically stable aggregates. These vesicles can associate strongly with polymers in solution by means of hydrophobic and/or electrostatic interactions. In the current work, we have investigated the rheological and microstructural properties of mixtures of cationic polyelectrolytes and net anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate/didodecyldimethylammonium bromide vesicles. The polyelectrolytes consist of two cationic cellulose derivatives with different charge densities; the lowest charge density polymer contains also hydrophobic grafts, with the number of charges equal to the number of grafts. For both systems, polymer-vesicle association leads to a major increase in viscosity and to gel-like behavior, but the viscosity effects are more pronounced for the less charged, hydrophobically modified polymer. Evaluation of the frequency dependence of the storage and loss moduli for the two systems shows further differences in behavior: while the more long-lived cross-links occur for the more highly charged hydrophilic polymer, the number of cross-links is higher for the hydrophobically modified polymer. Microstructure studies by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy indicate that the two polymers affect the vesicle stability in different ways. With the hydrophobically modified polymer, the aggregates remain largely in the form of globular vesicles and faceted vesicles (polygon-shaped vesicles with largely planar regions). For the hydrophilic polycation, on the other hand, the surfactant aggregate structure is more extensively modified: first, the vesicles change from a globular to a faceted shape; second, there is opening of the bilayers leading to holey vesicles and ultimately to considerable vesicle disruption leading to planar bilayer, disklike aggregates. The faceted shape is tentatively attributed to a crystallization of the surfactant film in the vesicles. It is inferred that a hydrophobically modified polyion with relatively low charge density can better stabilize vesicles due to formation of molecularly mixed aggregates, while a hydrophilic polyion with relatively high charge density associates so strongly to the surfactant films, due to strong electrostatic interactions, that the vesicles are more perturbed and even disrupted.  相似文献

In this study, the phase behavior, structure and properties of systems composed of the cationic, cellulose-based polycation JR 400 and the anionic surfactants sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) or sodium dodecylethoxysulfate (SDES), mainly in the semidilute regime, were examined. This system shows the interesting feature of a very large viscosity increase by nearly 4 orders of magnitude as compared to the pure polymer solution already at very low concentrations of 1 wt%. By using rheology, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we are able to deduce systematic correlations between the molecular composition of the systems (characterized by the charge ratio Z=[+(polymer)]/[?(surfactant)]), their structural organization and the resulting macroscopic flow behavior. Mixtures in the semidilute regime with an excess of polycation charge form highly viscous network structures containing rodlike aggregates composed of surfactant and polyelectrolyte that are interconnected by the long JR 400 chains. Viscosity and storage modulus follow scaling laws as a function of surfactant concentration (η~c(s)(4); G(0)~c(s)(1.5)) and the very pronounced viscosity increase mainly arises from the strongly enhanced structural relaxation time of the systems. In contrast, mixtures with excess surfactant charges form solutions with viscosities even below those of the pure polymer solution. The combination of SANS, DLS, and rheology shows that the structural, dynamical, and rheological properties of these oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/surfactant systems can be controlled in a systematic fashion by appropriately choosing the systems composition.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte-colloid coacervation could be viewed as a sub-category of complex coacervation, but is unique in (1) retaining the structure and properties of the colloid, and (2) reducing the heterogeneity and configurational complexity of polyelectrolyte-polyelectrolyte (PE-PE) systems. Interest in protein-polyelectrolyte coacervates arises from preservation of biofunctionality; in addition, the geometric and charge isotropy of micelles allows for better comparison with theory, taking into account the central role of colloid charge density. In the context of these two systems, we describe critical conditions for complex formation and for coacervation with regard to colloid and polyelectrolyte charge densities, ionic strength, PE molecular weight (MW), and stoichiometry; and effects of temperature and shear, which are unique to the PE-micelle systems. The coacervation process is discussed in terms of theoretical treatments and models, as supported by experimental findings. We point out how soluble aggregates, subject to various equilibria and disproportionation effects, can self-assemble leading to heterogeneity in macroscopically homogeneous coacervates, on multiple length scales.  相似文献

One of the most important characteristics of the polyelectrolyte/surfactant interaction is the binding isotherm of the surfactant because it provides basic thermodynamic information about the binding mechanism. However, the amount of the surfactant bound to the polymer may crucially affect the surface properties of these systems via changing the thermodynamic activity of the components. Therefore, a knowledge of the binding isotherms can also be useful in tuning the efficiency of commercial products. However, the determination of these isotherms is still subject to significant experimental difficulties. In this letter, we offer a novel method for the estimation of binding isotherms based on electrokinetic measurements. The technique provides a simple and quick way to estimate the bound amount of surfactant that might be useful in both fundamental and industrial research. In principle, the proposed method could also be extended to the determination of the binding isotherms of small ligands on biomacromolecules.  相似文献

Viscometric and conductometric measurements have been performed on dilute, salt free solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(vinyl alcohol, vinyl sulphate ester) copolymer salts in order to get information on transition from a neutral to charged macromolecules. With increasing linear charge density from a very low value to a moderate one a non linear dependence of polyelectrolyte effect on copolymer composition was observed. A comparison has shown that there is a close analogy between the expansion of polyanions and swelling of polyelectrolyte networks at comparable linear charge density range. Due to the intra- and inter-molecular mobile ionic bridges a considerable contraction was pointed out by viscometry for barium, magnesium and copper salts. However, the differences in properties of counterions of higher charge number indicates that in addition to the valency, there is a definite chemical effect, too. It has been revealed by the electric conductance measurements that the transition from a neutral to charged macromolecules could be a very complex one calling for a new and more detailed theoretical consideration of polyelectrolyte solutions.  相似文献

The synergistic adsorption and complexation of polystyrene sulfonate, PSS (a highly charged anionic polyelectrolyte), and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, C12TAB (a cationic surfactant), at the air-water interface can lead to interfacial gels that strongly influence foam-film drainage and stability. The formation and characteristics of these gels have been studied as a function of PSS molecular weight by combining surface tension, ellipsometry, and foam-film drainage experiments. Simultaneously the solution electromotive force has been measured to track the polymer-surfactant interactions in the bulk solution. It has been found that there is a critical molecular weight for surface gelation as well as for bulk precipitation and aggregation. Furthermore, we show that for the lowest molecular weights, PSS adsorbs with C12TAB in compact layers at the air-water interface. In particular, for mixtures of C12TAB with the monomer compound of the PSS repeat unit (e.g. Mw = 208), interfacial complexation is found to be similar to that of catanionic mixtures (mixtures of surfactants of opposite charge).  相似文献

The force of double-layer interaction between dissimilar flat oxide surfaces charged oppositely at infinite separation and with Stern-Grahame layers was calculated as a function of the surface separation under the conditions of charge regulation. The interaction force showed a monotonic attraction with respect to the surface separation, lying between constant surface potential and constant surface charge conditions. The variations of surface potentials and surface charge densities of respective double layers were also presented as functions of the surface separation. When the negative diffuse-layer potential at infinite separation changed its sign to positive as a result of specific adsorption of cations on the negatively changed surface, the double-layer interaction force showed a repulsive force barrier followed by an attraction at some particular separation.  相似文献

Polyphosphates are important but neglected polyelectrolytes that play a major role in biology and in surface science for the stabilization of colloids against flocculation and for the preservation of food. They are also known as “Calgon” ® and intensively used as additives in washing powders. This review aims to review recent developments in which linear polyphosphates are used for the design of new functional coatings using sol–gel processes and layer-by-layer deposition methods. All these methods rely on the high charge density of polyphosphates as inorganic polyelectrolytes, therefore the structure and properties of these molecules are also reviewed. New perspectives will also been given for the design of stimuli responsive coatings at the tiny frontier between biology and materials science.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous solution/goethite interfaces show that the classical models of the electrical double layer do not accurately describe the distribution of ions near the surface (such a distribution is present even when the surface is neutral) and that the explicit treatment of solvent molecules is essential to capture the effects of the surface on the liquid phase.  相似文献

It is studied by spectrofluorimetry the association of ionized cationic micelles (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) with oppositely charged polyelectrolyte [sodium poly(styrenesulfonate), PSSNa]. CTAB provokes a change in the fluorescence intensity emitted by PSSNa. The investigated surfactants form micelle-like aggregates before critical micellar concentration (CMC). Two approaches (binding and partition equilibrium) are used to obtain the association constant, KA, number of CTAB molecules in a binding site, N, and apparent partition coefficient, Γ. Analysis of the parameters as a function of polymer concentration and ionic strength μ is performed. The effect of μ shows an enhancement in association as μ decreases. Furthermore as CMC decreases with μ, experiments have to be performed at rather different CMCs. This causes KA and Γ to increase with μ. The adsorption of polyelectrolyte on the micelle is also studied at the greatest μ using high-performance liquid chromatography (size-exclusion) for the first time, obtaining results similar to those found using spectrofluorimetry.  相似文献

In this review, we discuss the competition of non-DLVO forces in the adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto charged surfaces. We consider two particularly illustrative problems, namely the adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto similarly charged surfaces and the reversal of surface charge by adsorption of polyelectrolytes. Emphasis is made on how simulation results help to understand relevant experimental situations.  相似文献

The effects of polymer charge and surfactant composition were examined on the complex-precipitation (CP) and phase-separation (PS) regions for cationic cellulose (CC), sodium poly(oxyethylene laurylsulfate) and lauroylamidopropyl-N,N-dimethylammonioacetate and Na2SO4. The solubilized state of the complexes was studied by light scattering in the one-phase, 1φ, solution in the postprecipitation region. The cationic charge on the CC and the anionic charge on the surfactant greatly affected the CP and PS regions, to change the domain of the 1φ solution. The relative scattering intensity of the complex, ΔI complex , was high near the CP region and decreased with increasing surfactant and salt concentrations in the 1φ solution. The presence of solubilized complexes of polymers cross-linked with surfactant micelles was suggested near the CP region. The cross-linking of the complexes decreased with increasing surfactant and salt concentrations, producing increased micelle binding and charge shielding. The shrinkage of the complexes was considered to bring about the boundary on which ΔI complex is equal to the relative scattering intensity of polymer alone in the 1φ solutions. Separation of the complexes and the transition of the solution into the PS region were suggested at high concentrations over the boundary. Received: 30 September 2000 Accepted: 7 May 2001  相似文献

We report on the complexation between charged-neutral block copolymers and oppositely charged surfactants studied by small-angle neutron scattering. Two block copolymers/surfactant systems are investigated, poly(acrylicacid)-b-poly(acrylamide) with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and poly(trimethylammonium ethylacrylate methylsulfate)-b-poly(acrylamide) with sodium dodecyl sulfate. Two two systems are similar in terms of structure and molecular weight but have different electrostatic charges. The neutron-scattering data have been interpreted in terms of a model that assumes the formation of mixed polymer-surfactant aggregates, also called colloidal complexes. These complexes exhibit a core-shell microstructure, where the core is a dense coacervate microphase of micelles surrounded by neutral blocks. Here, we are taking advantage of the fact that the complexation results in finite-size aggregates to shed some light on the complexation mechanisms. In order to analyze quantitatively the neutron data, we develop two different approaches to derive the number of surfactant micelles per polymer in the mixed aggregates and the distributions of aggregation numbers. With these results, we show that the formation of the colloidal complex is in agreement with overcharging predictions. In both systems, the amount of polyelectrolytes needed to build the core-shell colloids always exceeds the number that would be necessary to compensate the charge of the micelles. For the two polymer-surfactant systems investigated, the overcharging ratios are 0.66+/-0.06 and 0.38+/-0.02.  相似文献

Complexation in solutions of strongly charged polyelectrolytes and diblock copolymers composed of oppositely charged and neutral blocks were studied via the molecular dynamics method. Stoichiometric micellar complexes formed in a dilute solution represent cylindrical brushes whose conformation is determined by the linear charge density on the polyelectrolyte and by temperature. As the concentration of macromolecules increases, the orientational ordering of anisotropic ionic micelles takes place. The complexation can induce the stiffening of the polyelectrolyte chain.  相似文献

We have studied the effect of the pH and surface charge of mica on the adsorption of the positively charged weak polyelectrolyte (PE) poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) using atomic force microscopy (AFM) single-molecule experiments. These AFM experiments were performed in situ directly under aqueous media. If the mica's surface and the PE are oppositely charged (pH > 3), the PE forms a flat adsorbed layer of two-dimensionally (2D) equilibrated self-avoiding random walk coils. The adsorbed layer's structure remains almost unchanged if the pH is decreased to pH 3 (the mica's surface is weakly charged). At pH 2 (the mica surface is decorated by spots of different electrical charges), the polyelectrolyte chains take the form of a 2D compressed coil. In this pH range, at an increased P2VP concentration in solution, the PE segments preferentially adsorb onto the top of previously adsorbed segments, rather than onto an unoccupied surface. We explain this behavior as being caused by the heterogeneous character of the charged surface and the competitive adsorption of hydronium ions. The further increase of polymer concentration results in a complete coverage of the mica substrate and the charge overcompensation by P2VP chains adsorbed on the similarly charged substrate, due to van der Waals forces.  相似文献
