Metal‐containing polymer hydrogels have attracted increasing interest in recent years due to their outstanding properties such as biocompatibility, recoverability, self‐healing, and/or redox activity. In this short review, methods for the preparation of metal‐containing polymer hydrogels are introduced and an overview of these hydrogels with various functionalities is given. It is hoped that this short update can stimulate innovative ideas to promote the research of metal‐containing hydrogels in the communities.

Cross‐linked azobenzene liquid‐crystalline polymer films with a poly(oxyethylene) backbone are synthesized by photoinitiated cationic copolymerization. Azobenzene moieties in the film surface toward the light source are simultaneously photoaligned during photopolymerization with unpolarized 436 nm light and thus form a splayed alignment in the whole film. The prepared films show reversible photoinduced bending behavior with opposite bending directions when different surfaces of one film face to ultraviolet light irradiation.

The synthesis of highly efficient two‐photon uncaging groups and their potential use in functional conjugated polymers for post‐polymerization modification are reported. Careful structural design of the employed nitrophenethyl caging groups allows to efficiently induce bond scission by a two‐photon process through a combination of exceptionally high two‐photon absorption cross‐sections and high reaction quantum yields. Furthermore, π‐conjugated polyfluorenes are functionalized with these photocleavable side groups and it is possible to alter their emission properties and solubility behavior by simple light irradiation. Cleavage of side groups leads to a turn‐on of the fluorescence while solubility of the π‐conjugated materials is drastically reduced.

A new approach to stabilize carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in aqueous solution with a reduction‐responsive water‐soluble polymer is reported. The novel polymer synthesized by a controlled radical polymerization is functionalized with pendant pyrene groups capable of adhering to the surface of CNTs through π–π noncovalent interactions, and labeled with disulfide linkages to exhibit reduction‐responsive cleavage. Upon the cleavage of junction disulfide linkages in a reducing environment, water‐soluble polymers are shed, retaining clean CNT surfaces for electrochemical catalytic reactions.

Thermomechanical properties of neat phosphine‐catalyzed thiol‐Michael networks fabricated in a controlled manner are reported, and a comparison between thiol‐acrylate and thiol‐vinyl sulfone step‐growth networks is performed. When highly reactive vinyl sulfone monomers are used as Michael acceptors, glassy polymer networks are obtained with glass transition temperatures ranging from 30 to 80 °C. Also, the effect of side‐chain functionality on the mechanical properties of thiol‐vinyl sulfone networks is investigated. It is found that the inclusion of thiourethane functionalities, aryl structures, and most importantly the elimination of interchain ester linkages in the networks significantly elevate the network's glass transition temperature as compared with neat ester‐based thiol‐Michael networks.

This communication describes photoresponsive gels, prepared using ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), that dissolve upon irradiation with ultraviolet light. Exposure of mixtures of norbornene‐type ROMP monomers and new photoreactive cross‐linkers comprising two norbornene units bound through a chain containing o‐nitrobenzyl esters (NBEs) to well‐known ruthenium carbene catalysts gave cross‐linked polymer networks that swelled in organic solvents or water depending on the structure of the monomer. These gels became homogeneous upon irradiation with UV light, consistent with breaking of the cross‐links through photolysis of the NBE groups. The irradiation time required for homogenization of the gels depended on the cross‐link density and the structure of the photoresponsive cross‐linker.

A convenient synthesis of sustainable polyamides, which contain side groups and stereocenters, starting from the biobased small terpene β‐pinene is reported. The polyamides, which are obtained via the pinene‐based lactam via ring‐opening polymerization, show excellent thermal properties, rendering this approach very interesting for the utilization of novel biobased and structurally significant high‐performance polymers and materials. Polymer masses and yields are shown to be dependent on different parameters, and the stereoinformation of the lactam monomer can thus be transferred into the polymer chain. In addition, another lactam side product can also be transformed to polyamides.

Supramolecular polyfluorenol enable assembly into conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs). Poly{9‐[4‐(octyloxy)phenyl]fluoren‐9‐ol‐2,7‐diyl} (PPFOH)‐based supramolecular nanoparticles are prepared via reprecipitation. PPFOH nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 40 to 200 nm are obtained by adding different amounts of water into DMF solution. Size‐dependent luminescence is observed in PPFOH‐based hydrogen‐bonded nanoparticles that is different from that of poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorenes). Finally, white light‐emitting devices using CPNs with a size of 80 nm exhibit white emission with the CIE coordinates (0.31, 0.34). Amphiphilic conjugated polymer nanoparticles are potential organic nano‐inks for the fabrication of organic devices in printed electronics.

Molecular bottle‐brush functionalized single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with superior dispersibility in water are prepared by a one‐pot synthetic methodology. Elongating the main‐chain and side‐chain length of molecular bottle‐brushes can further increase SWCNT dispersibility. They show significant enhancement of SWCNT dispersibility up to four times higher than those of linear molecular functionalized SWCNTs.

Conjugation of a hydrophobic poly(2‐oxazoline) bearing tertiary amide groups along its backbone with a short single stranded nucleotide sequence results in an amphiphilic comb/graft copolymer, which organizes in fibrils upon direct dissolution in water. Supported by circular dichroism, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scattering data, fibrils are formed through inter‐ and intramolecular hydrogen bonding between hydrogen accepting amide groups along the polymer backbone and hydrogen donating nucleic acid grafts leading to the formation of hollow tubes.

A linear supramolecular polymer based on the self‐assembly of an easily available copillar[5]arene monomer is efficiently prepared, which is evidenced by the NMR spectroscopy, viscosity measurement, and DOSY experiment. The single‐crystal X‐ray analysis reveals that the polymerization of the AB‐type monomer is driven by the quadruple CH•••π interactions and one CH•••O interaction.

The synthesis, characterization, and testing of a range of novel bio‐inspired L‐DOPA‐derived poly(ester amide)s is presented, using a widely applicable, straightforward chemistry. A model system is used to study and establish the monomer and polymer synthetic protocols, and to provide a set of optimum reaction conditions. It is further shown that fully biobased L‐DOPA‐containing adhesive tapes can be fabricated, which are positively evaluated in terms of their adhesive properties. The newly developed synthetic protocol constitutes a versatile platform for accessing and tailoring a plethora of relevant structures, including a variety of potentially biocompatible poly(ethylene glycol)‐based materials.

Janus particles with anisotropic biofunctionalities are perfect models to mimic anisotropic architectures and directional interactions that occur in nature. It is therefore highly desirable to develop reliable and efficient methods to synthesize biofunctional Janus particles. Herein, a facile method combining seeded‐emulsion polymerization and thiol‐click chemistry has been developed to synthesize Janus particles with glucose moieties on one side. These biofunctional Janus particles show region‐selective binding of protein, which represents a big step toward biomimicry, and demonstrates the potential of the bioJanus particles for targeted drug delivery and binding.

Diarylbutadiyne derivatives are ideal monomers for providing the π‐electron‐conjugated system of polydiacetylenes (PDAs). The geometrical parameters for diacetylene topochemical polymerization are known. However, control of the molecules under these parameters is yet to be addressed. This work shows that by simply tailoring diarylbutadiyne with amide side‐chain substituents, the arrangement of the substituents and the resulting hydrogen bond framework allows formation of π‐electron‐conjugated PDA.

A series of fluorene‐based conjugated polymers containing the aggregation‐induced emissive (AIE)‐active tetraphenylethene and dicarboxylate pseudocrown as a receptor exhibits a unique dual‐mode sensing ability for selective detection of lead ion in water. Fluorescence turn‐off and turn‐on detections are realized in 80%–90% and 20% water in tetrahydrofuran (THF), respectively, for lead ion with a concentration as low as 10−8 m .

A simple polymerization of trichlorophosphoranimine (Cl3P = N−SiMe3) mediated by functionalized triphenylphosphines is presented. In situ initiator formation and the subsequent polymerization progress are investigated by 31P NMR spectroscopy, demonstrating a living cationic polymerization mechanism. The polymer chain lengths and molecular weights of the resulting substituted poly(organo)phosphazenes are further studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. This strategy facilitates the preparation of polyphosphazenes with controlled molecular weights and specific functional groups at the α‐chain end. Such well‐defined, mono‐end‐functionalized polymers have great potential use in bioconjugation, surface modification, and as building blocks for complex macromolecular constructs.

The synthesis of an ambipolar π‐conjugated copolymer consisting of alternating diketopyrrolopyrrole and tetrafluorobenzene via direct arylation polymerization (DAP) is reported. Two different combinations of monomers are investigated under various catalytic conditions for DAP. The target polymer obtained under an optimized catalytic condition shows minimal structural defects, a number‐average molecular weight of 33.2 kDa, and balanced electron and hole mobility of 1 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 S−1 in the organic field‐effect transistors fabricated and tested under ambient conditions.

A free‐standing polymer brush film with tailored thicknesses based on a colorless polydopamine (PDA) thin layer is prepared and characterized. The surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is performed on a PDA layer with thickness of ca. 6 nm, which generated an optically transparent and colorless free‐standing PHEMA brush film (1.5 cm × 1.5 cm). Because the cross‐linked PDA layer is used as the base for the polymer brushes, the reported method does not require cross‐linking the polymer brushes. The free‐standing film thicknesses of ≈16–75 nm are controlled by simply changing the ATRP reaction time. The results show that the free‐standing PHEMA brush film transferred onto a plate exhibits a relatively smooth surface and is stable in any solvent.

Imitating the natural “energy cascade” architecture, we present a single‐molecular rod‐like nano‐light harvester (NLH) based on a cylindrical polymer brush. Block copolymer side chains carrying (9,9‐diethylfluoren‐2‐yl)methyl methacrylate units as light absorbing antennae (energy donors) are tethered to a linear polymer backbone containing 9‐anthracenemethyl methacrylate units as emitting groups (energy acceptors). These NLHs exhibit very efficient energy absorption and transfer. Moreover, we manipulate the energy transfer by tuning the donor–acceptor distance.

The accomplishments in the copolymerization of ethylene with cyclic olefins such as norborn‐2‐ene or cis‐cyclooctene via tandem ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) – vinyl insertion polymerization (VIP) are outlined. This approach provides polyolefins with high molecular weight (600,000 < Mn < 4,500,000 g mol−1) and substantial amounts of double bonds along the polymer main chain. Olefinic moieties in ROMP‐derived polymers can be converted into hydroxyl, amino, silyl, ester, or carboxylate groups by different means including controlled radical polymerization‐based grafting. The underlying concept for the switch in polymerization mechanism, the resulting pre‐catalyst requirements, limitations and challenges and the chemistry developed for functionalizing unsaturated polymers are outlined in detail.
