It has been shown that the spectral fluctuations of different quantum systems are characterized by 1/falpha noise, with 1< or =alpha< or =2, in the transition from integrability to chaos. This result is not well understood. We show that chaos-assisted tunneling gives rise to this power-law behavior. We develop a random matrix model for intermediate quantum systems, based on chaos-assisted tunneling, and we discuss under which conditions it displays 1/falpha noise in the transition from integrability to chaos. We conclude that the variance of the elements that connect regular with chaotic states must decay with the difference of energy between them. We compare the characteristics of the transition modeled in this way with what is obtained for the Robnik billiard.

We review the relation between AdS spacetime in 1 $+$ 2 dimensions and the BTZ black hole (BTZbh). Later we show that a ground state in AdS spacetime becomes a thermal state in the BTZbh. We show that this is true in the bulk and in the boundary of AdS spacetime. The existence of this thermal state is tantamount to say that the Unruh effect exists in AdS spacetime and becomes the Hawking effect for an eternal BTZbh. In order to make this we use the correspondence introduced in algebraic holography between algebras of quasi-local observables associated to wedges and double cones regions in the bulk of AdS spacetime and its conformal boundary respectively. Also we give the real scalar quantum field as a concrete heuristic realization of this formalism.

We show that there exist bipartite quantum states which contain a large locked classical correlation that is unlocked by a disproportionately small amount of classical communication. In particular, there are (2n+1)-qubit states for which a one-bit message doubles the optimal classical mutual information between measurement results on the subsystems, from n/2 bits to n bits. This phenomenon is impossible classically. However, states exhibiting this behavior need not be entangled. We study the range of states exhibiting this phenomenon and bound its magnitude.

Level fluctuations in a quantum system have been used to characterize quantum chaos using random matrix models. Recently time series methods were used to relate the level fluctuations to the classical dynamics in the regular and chaotic limit. In this, we show that the spectrum of the system undergoing order to chaos transition displays a characteristic f(-gamma) noise and gamma is correlated with the classical chaos in the system. We demonstrate this using a smooth potential and a time-dependent system modeled by Gaussian and circular ensembles, respectively, of random matrix theory. We show the effect of short periodic orbits on these fluctuation measures.

We use a correlation function analysis of the field quadratures to characterize both the blackbody radiation emitted by a 50 Ω load resistor and the quantum properties of two types of beam splitters in the microwave regime. To this end, we first study vacuum fluctuations as a function of frequency in a Planck spectroscopy experiment and then measure the covariance matrix of weak thermal states. Our results provide direct experimental evidence that vacuum fluctuations represent the fundamental minimum quantum noise added by a beam splitter to any given input signal.

A semiclassical theory of a dissipative Henon—Heiles system is proposed. Based on -scaling of an equation for the evolution of the Wigner quasiprobability distribution function in the presence of dissipation and thermal diffusion, we derive a semiclassical equation for quantum fluctuations, governed by the dissipation and the curvature of the classical potential. We show how the initial quantum noise gets amplified by classical chaotic diffusion, which is expressible in terms of a correlation of stochastic fluctuations of the curvature of the potential due to classical chaos, and ultimately settles down to equilibrium under the influence of dissipation. We also establish that there exists a critical limit to the expansion of phase space. The limit is set by chaotic diffusion and dissipation. Our semiclassical analysis is corroborated by numerical simulation of a quantum operator master equation.

We address the problem of removing correlation from sets of states while preserving as much local quantum information as possible. We prove that states obtained from universal cloning can only be decorrelated at the expense of complete erasure of local information (i.e., information about the copied state). We solve analytically the problem of decorrelation for two qubits and two qumodes (harmonic oscillators in Gaussian states), and provide sets of decorrelable states and the minimum amount of noise to be added for decorrelation.

We propose a quantity called modulus fidelity to measure the closeness of two quantum pure states. We use it to investigate the closeness of eigenstates in one-dimensional hard-core bosons. When the system is integrable, eigenstates close to their neighbor or not, which leads to a large fluctuation in the distribution of modulus fidelity. When the system becomes chaos, the fluctuation is reduced dramatically, which indicates all eigenstates become close to each other. It is also found that two kind of closeness, i.e., closeness of eigenstates and closeness of eigenvalues, are not correlated at integrability but correlated at chaos. We also propose that the closeness of eigenstates is the underlying mechanism of eigenstate thermalization hypothesis(ETH) which explains the thermalization in quantum many-body systems.

The Schrödinger–Langevin equation (SLE) is considered as an effective open quantum system formalism suitable for phenomenological applications involving a quantum subsystem interacting with a thermal bath. We focus on two open issues relative to its solutions: the stationarity of the excited states of the non-interacting subsystem when one considers the dissipation only and the thermal relaxation toward asymptotic distributions with the additional stochastic term. We first show that a proper application of the Madelung/polar transformation of the wave function leads to a non zero damping of the excited states of the quantum subsystem. We then study analytically and numerically the SLE ability to bring a quantum subsystem to the thermal equilibrium of statistical mechanics. To do so, concepts about statistical mixed states and quantum noises are discussed and a detailed analysis is carried with two kinds of noise and potential. We show that within our assumptions the use of the SLE as an effective open quantum system formalism is possible and discuss some of its limitations.

We argue that deconfinement in anti-de Sitter space models of quantum chromodynamics (AdS/QCD models) occurs via a first order Hawking-Page type phase transition between low temperature thermal AdS and a high temperature black hole. Such a result is consistent with the expected temperature independence, to leading order in 1/Nc, of the meson spectrum and spatial Wilson loops below the deconfinement temperature. As a by-product, we obtain model dependent deconfinement temperatures Tc in the hard- and soft-wall models of AdS/QCD. Our result for Tc in the soft-wall model is close to a recent lattice prediction.

We examine the dynamics of a wave packet that initially corresponds to a coherent state in the model of a quantum rotator excited by a periodic sequence of kicks. This model is the main model of quantum chaos and allows for a transition from regular behavior to chaotic in the classical limit. By doing a numerical experiment we study the generation of squeezed states in quasiclassical conditions and in a time interval when quantum-classical correspondence is well-defined. We find that the degree of squeezing depends on the degree of local instability in the system and increases with the Chirikov classical stochasticity parameter. We also discuss the dependence of the degree of squeezing on the initial width of the packet, the problem of stability and observability of squeezed states in the transition to quantum chaos, and the dynamics of disintegration of wave packets in quantum chaos. The measurement problem for the optical phase has been traditionally attacked for noiseless schemes or in the presence of amplitude or detection noise. Here we address the estimation of phase in the presence of phase diffusion and evaluate the ultimate quantum limits to precision for phase-shifted Gaussian states. We look for the optimal detection scheme and derive approximate scaling laws for the quantum Fisher information and the optimal squeezing fraction in terms of the total energy and the amount of noise. We also find that homodyne detection is a nearly optimal detection scheme in the limit of very small and large noise.

We formulate axioms of conformal theory (CT) in dimensions >2 modifying Segal’s axioms for two-dimensional CFT. (In the definition of higher-dimensional CFT, one includes also a condition of existence of energy-momentum tensor.) We use these axioms to derive the AdS/CT correspondence for local theories on AdS. We introduce a notion of weakly local quantum field theory and construct a bijective correspondence between conformal theories on the sphere Sd and weakly local quantum field theories on \({H^{d+1}}\) that are invariant with respect to isometries. (Here \({H^{d+1}}\) denotes hyperbolic space = Euclidean AdS space.) We give an expression of AdS correlation functions in terms of CT correlation functions. The conformal theory has conserved energy-momentum tensor iff the AdS theory has graviton in its spectrum.

With this work we elaborate on the physics of quantum noise in thermal equilibrium and in stationary nonequilibrium. Starting out from the celebrated quantum fluctuation-dissipation theorem we discuss some important consequences that must hold for open, dissipative quantum systems in thermal equilibrium. The issue of quantum dissipation is exemplified with the fundamental problem of a damped harmonic quantum oscillator. The role of quantum fluctuations is discussed in the context of both, the nonlinear generalized quantum Langevin equation and the path integral approach. We discuss the consequences of the time-reversal symmetry for an open dissipative quantum dynamics and, furthermore, point to a series of subtleties and possible pitfalls. The path integral methodology is applied to the decay of metastable states assisted by quantum Brownian noise.

We review the theoretical and the experimental researches aimed at quantifying or identifying quantum correlations in liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) systems at room temperature. We first overview, at the formal level, a method to determine the quantum discord and its classical counterpart in systems described by a deviation matrix. Next, we describe an experimental implementation of that method. Previous theoretical analysis of quantum discord decoherence had predicted the time dependence of the discord to change suddenly under the influence of phase noise. The experiment attests to the robustness of the effect, sufficient to confirm the theoretical prediction even under the additional influence of a thermal environment. Finally, we discuss an observable witness for the quantumness of correlations in two-qubit systems and its first NMR implementation. Should the nature, not the amount, of the correlation be under scrutiny, the witness offers the most attractive alternative.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution(CVQKD) can be integrated with thermal states for short-distance wireless quantum communications. However, its performance is usually restricted with the practical thermal noise. We propose a method to improve the security threshold of thermal-state(TS) CVQKD by employing a heralded hybrid linear amplifier(HLA) at the receiver. We find the effect of thermal noise on the HLA-involved scheme in near-and-mid infrared band or terahertz band for direct and reverse reconciliation. Numerical simulations show that the HLA-involved scheme can compensate for the detriment of thermal noise and hence increase the security threshold of TS-CVQKD. In near-and-mid infrared band, security threshold can be extended by 2.1 dB in channel loss for direct reconciliation and 1.6 dB for reverse reconciliation, whereas in terahertz band, security threshold can be slightly enhanced for the gain parameter less than 1 due to the rise in thermal noise.

A conditional quantum correlation transfer is demonstrated experimentally for continuous variables by employing two pairs of twin-beams states. In present paper, the quantum correlation of twin beams is indicated by loss coefficient or “gemellity”, which is the remaining noise on the intensity difference normalized to the shot noise level. The quantum correlation between two initial idler beams with loss coefficient of 0.4 was conditionally transferred from two pairs of initially independent twin beams with loss coefficient of 0.2. A theory of conditional quantum correlation transfer and comparison between experimental results and theoretical prediction are also presented. The experimental results agree with the theory well.
