Since the development of supramolecular chemical biology, self‐organised nano‐architectures have been widely explored in a variety of biomedical applications. Functionalized synthetic molecules with the ability of non‐covalent assembly in an aqueous environment are typically able to interact with biological systems and are therefore especially interesting for their use in theranostics. Nanostructures based on π‐conjugated oligomers are particularly promising as theranostic platforms as they bear outstanding photophysical properties as well as drug loading capabilities. This Feature Article provides an overview on the recent advances in the self‐assembly of intrinsically fluorescent nanoparticles from π‐conjugated small molecules such as fluorene or perylene based chromophores for biomedical applications.

The present review focuses on the recent progress made in thin film orientation of semi‐conducting polymers with particular emphasis on methods using epitaxy and shear forces. The main results reported in this review deal with regioregular poly(3‐alkylthiophene)s and poly(dialkylfluorenes). Correlations existing between processing conditions, macromolecular parameters and the resulting structures formed in thin films are underlined. It is shown that epitaxial orientation of semi‐conducting polymers can generate a large palette of semi‐crystalline and nanostructured morphologies by a subtle choice of the orienting substrates and growth conditions.

This work describes the synthesis of π‐conjugated polymers possessing arylene and 1,3‐butadiene alternating units in the main chain by the reaction of α,β‐unsaturated ester/nitrile containing γ‐H with aromatic/heteroaromatic aldehyde compound. By using 4‐(4‐formylphenyl)‐2‐butylene acid ethyl ester as a model monomer, the different polymerization conditions, including catalyst, catalyst amount, and solvent, are optimized. The polymerization of 4‐(4‐formylphenyl)‐2‐butylene acid ethyl ester is carried out by refluxing in ethanol for 72 h with 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) as a catalyst to give a 1,3‐butadiene‐containing π‐conjugated polymer, poly(phenylene‐1,3‐butadiene), in 84.3% yield with and / (PDI) estimated as 6172 and 1.65, respectively. Based on this new methodology, a series of π‐conjugated polymers containing 1,3‐butadiene units with different substituents are obtained in high yields. A possible mechanism is proposed for the polymerization through a six‐membered ring transition state and then a 1,5‐H shift intermediate.

Diarylbutadiyne derivatives are ideal monomers for providing the π‐electron‐conjugated system of polydiacetylenes (PDAs). The geometrical parameters for diacetylene topochemical polymerization are known. However, control of the molecules under these parameters is yet to be addressed. This work shows that by simply tailoring diarylbutadiyne with amide side‐chain substituents, the arrangement of the substituents and the resulting hydrogen bond framework allows formation of π‐electron‐conjugated PDA.

High molecular weight cyclic poly(ε‐caprolactone)s (cPCLs) with variable ring size are synthesized via light‐induced ring closure of α,ω‐anthracene‐terminated PCL (An‐PCL‐An). The ring size of cPCL is tunable simply by adjusting the polymer concentration from 10 to 100 mg mL−1 in THF. The cyclo­addition via the bimolecular cyclization of An‐PC‐An is well characterized by a variety of analyses such as 1H NMR and UV–vis spectroscopies, gel‐permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. The reversible dimerization of An induced by heating enables the cyclic PCL to have a switchable “on–off” capability. This novel light‐induced ring‐closure technique can be one of the most powerful candidates for producing various well‐defined cyclic polymers in highly concentrated polymer solution.

The synthesis of novel luminescent polymer containing p‐phenylene‐ethynylene and 9,12‐linked o‐carborane units alternately in the main chain is reported. The obtained polymer exhibits intense blue photoluminescence, providing the first insights into the optical properties of a 9,12‐disubstituted o‐carborane dye.  π‐Conjugated substituent at 9 and/or 12‐positions in o‐carborane is electrically independent, and both the HOMO and the LUMO levels slightly increase, whereas LUMO of the π‐conjugated substituent at 1 and/or 2‐positions in o‐carborane decrease.  Thus, it is deduced that polymers consisting of the 9,12‐linked o‐carborane unit are able to be applied as light‐emitting materials.

Cross‐linked azobenzene liquid‐crystalline polymer films with a poly(oxyethylene) backbone are synthesized by photoinitiated cationic copolymerization. Azobenzene moieties in the film surface toward the light source are simultaneously photoaligned during photopolymerization with unpolarized 436 nm light and thus form a splayed alignment in the whole film. The prepared films show reversible photoinduced bending behavior with opposite bending directions when different surfaces of one film face to ultraviolet light irradiation.

A simple method is reported for the preparation of double‐helical structures through a series of achiral random and block copolymers poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylbenzyl triazolylmethyl methylthymine) (PS‐co‐PVBT) with various T units on the side chains through click reactions of poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylbenzyl azide) (PS‐co‐PVBN3) with propargyl thymine (PT) and also the synthesis of the A‐appended pyrene derivative (A‐Py) through click chemistry. This double‐helical structure is observed from achiral random‐coil polystyrene (PS) main chains, stabilized through the combination of multiple A–T hydrogen bonds, and π–π stacking between pyrene units and single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs).

The controlled synthesis of poly(oligo(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline)methacrylate) (P(OEtOxMA)) polymers by Cu(0)‐mediated polymerization in water/methanol mixtures is reported. Utilizing an acetal protected aldehyde initiator for the polymerization, well‐defined polymers are synthesized (>99% conversion, Ð < 1.25) with subsequent postpolymerization deprotection resulting in α‐aldehyde end group containing comb polymers. These P(OEtOxMA) are subsequently site‐specifically conjugated, via reductive amination, to a dipeptide (NH2‐Gly‐Tyr‐COOH) as a model peptide, prior to conjugation to the functional peptide oxytocin. The resulting oxytocin conjugates are evaluated in comparison to poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) combs synthesized in the same manner for potential effects on thermal stability in comparison to the native peptide.

The Suzuki–Miyaura coupling polymerization of dibromoarene 1 and arylenediboronic acid (ester) 2 with a Pd catalyst having a high propensity for intramolecular catalyst transfer is reported. The polymerization of excess 1 with 2 affords high‐molecular‐weight π‐conjugated polymer having boronic acid (ester) moieties at both ends, contrary to Flory's principle. This unstoichiometric polycondensation behavior is accounted for by intramolecular transfer of the Pd catalyst on 1 . In the polymerization of 1 and 2 having different aryl residues, high‐molecular‐weight polymer is obtained when the stronger donor aromatic is used as the dibromo monomer and the weaker donor or acceptor aromatic is used as diboronic acid (ester) monomer. The pinacol boronate moieties at both ends of the obtained poly(p‐phenylene) (PPP) can be converted to benzoic acid ester, hydroxyl group, and bromine. Furthermore, the reaction of the pinacol boronate‐terminated PPP with poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) having bromine at one end yields a triblock copolymer of P3HT‐b‐PPP‐b‐P3HT.

A simple and effective airflow method to prepare sandwich‐type block copolymer films is reported. The films are composed of three layers: vertically oriented nanocylinders align in both upper and bottom layers and irregular nanocylinders exist in the bulk of the film. The vertically oriented nanocylinders in both sides can provide high accessibility to ions and ensures the exchange of chemical species between the membrane and external environment, while the irregularly oriented nanocylinders in the middle part of the film can prolong the pathway of ions transportation and enhance ions selectivity.

A further objective of this article is the development of new methodologies to achieve strong adhesion between low surface energy polymers.

A new self‐healing polymer has been obtained by incorporating a cyclometalated platinum(II) complex Pt(CNN)Cl (CNN = 6‐phenyl‐2,2′‐bipyridyl) into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) backbone. The molecular interactions (a combination of Pt···Pt and π–π interactions) between cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes are strong enough to crosslink the linear PDMS polymer chains into an elastic film. The as prepared polymer can be stretched to over 20 times of its original length. When damaged, the polymer can be healed at room temperature without any healants or external stimuli. Moreover, the self‐healing is insensitive to surface aging. This work represents the first example where the attractive metallophilic inter­actions are utilized to design self‐healing materials. Moreover, our results suggest that the stretchability and self‐healing properties can be obtained simultaneously without any conflict by optimizing the strength of crosslinking interactions.

To overcome drug delivery issues associated with its short half‐life in vivo, p‐coumaric acid (pCA), a naturally occurring bioactive, has been chemically incorporated into a poly(anhydride‐ester) backbone through solution polymerization. Nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies indicated that pCA was successfully incorporated without noticeable alterations in structural integrity. The polymer's weight‐average molecular weight and thermal properties were determined, exhibiting a molecular weight of over 26 000 Da and a glass transition temperature of 57 °C. In addition, in vitro hydrolytic release studies demonstrated pCA release over 30 d with maintained antioxidant activity, demonstrating the polymer's potential as a controlled release system.

A series of fluorene‐based conjugated polymers containing the aggregation‐induced emissive (AIE)‐active tetraphenylethene and dicarboxylate pseudocrown as a receptor exhibits a unique dual‐mode sensing ability for selective detection of lead ion in water. Fluorescence turn‐off and turn‐on detections are realized in 80%–90% and 20% water in tetrahydrofuran (THF), respectively, for lead ion with a concentration as low as 10−8 m .

In this paper, a novel synthesis of polyethylene glycol (PEG)‐modified polypyrrole (PPy) nanomaterials is demonstrated by combining reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization and oxidative polymerization. Dye molecules with a heat‐labile linker are used as a model drug and covalently anchored onto the PEGlated PPy nanomaterials via “click chemistry.” The strong absorption of such PPy nanomaterials in the near‐infrared region endows the system excellent photothermal effect, which can be used not only as efficient photothermal agents for photothermal therapy but also good controllers of a drug‐release system by retro D–A reaction.

Molecular bottle‐brush functionalized single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with superior dispersibility in water are prepared by a one‐pot synthetic methodology. Elongating the main‐chain and side‐chain length of molecular bottle‐brushes can further increase SWCNT dispersibility. They show significant enhancement of SWCNT dispersibility up to four times higher than those of linear molecular functionalized SWCNTs.

A new approach to stabilize carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in aqueous solution with a reduction‐responsive water‐soluble polymer is reported. The novel polymer synthesized by a controlled radical polymerization is functionalized with pendant pyrene groups capable of adhering to the surface of CNTs through π–π noncovalent interactions, and labeled with disulfide linkages to exhibit reduction‐responsive cleavage. Upon the cleavage of junction disulfide linkages in a reducing environment, water‐soluble polymers are shed, retaining clean CNT surfaces for electrochemical catalytic reactions.

The structure of P3HT in P3HT:PCBM films is examined on a poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) substrate subjected to cryo‐cooling to low temperature (−143 °C) followed by gradual heating to 50 °C. The behavior of these systems is examined in the absence and presence of an Al electrode on top of the P3HT:PCBM film. At temperatures below −10 °C, only the type‐I phase of P3HT is observed. However, the type‐II phase of P3HT starts to form near −10 °C, in both the presence and absence of the Al layer. In the system without an Al layer, the type‐II phase disappears at 30 °C, but this phase persists to 50 °C in the presence of the Al layer. Concomitant with the formation of the type‐II phase, a 1:3 ordered P3HT type‐II (1/3,0,0) superlattice peak emerged. The type‐II domains tend to form near the Al electrode layer and show a higher degree of alignment than the type‐I crystals.

The synthesis of a series of dithienosilole–benzotriazole donor–acceptor statistical copolymers with various donor–acceptor ratios is reported, prepared by Kumada catalyst‐transfer polymerization. Statistical copolymer structure is verified by 1H NMR and optical absorption spectroscopy, and supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The copolymers exhibit a single optical absorption band that lies between dithienosilole and benzotriazole homopolymers, which shifts with varying donor–acceptor content. A chain extension experiment using a partially consumed benzotriazole solution as a macroinitiator followed by addition of dithienosilole leads to the synthesis of a statistical dithienosilole–benzotriazole block copolymer from a pure benzotriazole block, demonstrating that both chain extension and simultaneous monomer incorporation are possible using this methodology.
