The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze the degree of erythema visible in the larynges of normal subjects and of patients with symptoms of chronic posterior laryngitis. Video-documented examinations of laryngoscopy were digitized and then analyzed using computer image analysis software that allowed quantification of average color values, hue, saturation, and brightness from digitized color images. Documented laryngoscopic images from 7 normal subjects and 64 patients complaining of chronic laryngitis symptoms were examined, and additional patient examinations which were obtained and documented during treatment for reflux laryngitis were analyzed. Analysis was made of five different areas of each laryngeal image: the right and left vocal folds, the right and left vocal processes, and the posterior arytenoid mucosa. Data analysis showed that average color value ratings of redness for the patients with chronic laryngitis were significantly (p <0 .0561) greater than the average values for normal subjects for the vocal folds. Color values for redness of the posterior laryngeal structures and vocal folds in the patients who were treated for reflux laryngitis were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced over time and correlated with the clinical response to treatment. The data suggest that computer color analysis of documented video-laryngoscopy examinations can provide quantitative data on degree of erythema and may be useful as a quantitative means of diagnosis and documentation of treatment outcome for reflux laryngitis.  相似文献

Nineteen trained soprano singers aged 18–30 years vocalized tasks designed to assess average speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) during spontaneous speaking and reading. Vocal range and perceptual characteristics while singing with low intensity and high frequency were also assessed, and subjects completed a survey of vocal habits/symptoms. Recorded signals were digitized prior to being analyzed for SFF using the Kay Computerized Speech Lab program. Subjects were assigned to a normal voice or impaired voice group based on ratings of perceptual tasks and survey results. Data analysis showed group differences in mean SFF, no differences in vocal range, higher mean SFF values for reading than speaking, and 58% ability to perceive speaking in low pitch. The role of speaking in too low pitch as causal for vocal symptoms and need for voice classification differentiation in vocal performance studies are discussed.  相似文献

In order to investigate control of voice fundamental frequency (F0) in speaking and singing, 24 adults had to utter the nonsense word ['ta:tatas] repeatedly, while in selected trials their auditory feedback was frequency-shifted by 100 cents downwards. In the speaking condition the target speech rate and prosodic pattern were indicated by a rhythmic sequence made of white noise. In the singing condition the sequence consisted of piano notes, and subjects were instructed to match the pitch of the notes. In both conditions a response in voice F0 begins with a latency of about 150 ms. As predicted, response magnitude is greater in the singing condition (66 cents) than in the speaking condition (47 cents). Furthermore the singing condition seems to prolong the after-effect which is a continuation of the response in trials after the frequency shift. In the singing condition, response magnitude and the ability to match the target F0 correlate significantly. Results support the view that in speaking voice F0 is monitored mainly supra-segmentally and controlled less tightly than in singing.  相似文献

The differences of speaking frequency and intensity in different tonal dialects has not been widely investigated. The purposes of this study were (1) to compare the speaking frequency and speaking intensity ranges of Mandarin and Min and (2) to compare the speaking frequency and intensity ranges of Mandarin and Min to those of American English. The subjects were 80 normal Taiwanese adults divided into two dialect groups, Mandarin and Min. The speaking F0, the highest speaking F0, the lowest speaking F0, the maximum range of speaking F0, and the intensity counterpart were obtained from reading in their native dialects. Statistical analysis revealed that Min speakers had a significantly greater maximum range of speaking intensity and a smaller lowest speaking intensity than Mandarin speakers, which indicated tonal effects by speakers of the Min dialect. Moreover, Mandarin and Min speakers had a greater maximum range of speaking F0 and maximum range of speaking intensity than American English speakers. The data may provide an assessment tool for Mandarin speakers and Min speakers.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of laryngectomees under two conditions: breathing quietly and speaking with electrolarynx. Twenty male adult subjects, 8 normal speakers, and 12 laryngectomees participated the experiment. Airflow, pressure, and speech data were obtained simultaneously. The acceptability of electrolarynx speech under different conditions was also evaluated by 20 listeners (14 men, 6 women). Results indicated a higher peak expiration airflow and pressure among the laryngectomees as compared with the normal during breathing. Three different breathing patterns appeared among the laryngectomees when speaking with the electrolarynx: holding breath, exhaling, and breathing. Four long-time electrolarynx users held breath during speaking. Seven of 12 laryngectomees kept exhaling, whereas only 1 could breathe during speech production. In addition, (1) the acceptability of electrolarynx speech was the highest when speaking breathlessly; (2) no significant difference was found in the acceptability between the patterns of exhaling and breathing smoothly; and (3) the acceptability decreased if breathing quickly during phonation with the electrolarynx. It also suggests that the laryngectomees who can breathe during speaking may be more appropriate to use the new electrolarynx controlling the pitch by expiration pressure.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of speaking condition and auditory feedback on vowel production by postlingually deafened adults. Thirteen cochlear implant users produced repetitions of nine American English vowels prior to implantation, and at one month and one year after implantation. There were three speaking conditions (clear, normal, and fast), and two feedback conditions after implantation (implant processor turned on and off). Ten normal-hearing controls were also recorded once. Vowel contrasts in the formant space (expressed in mels) were larger in the clear than in the fast condition, both for controls and for implant users at all three time samples. Implant users also produced differences in duration between clear and fast conditions that were in the range of those obtained from the controls. In agreement with prior work, the implant users had contrast values lower than did the controls. The implant users' contrasts were larger with hearing on than off and improved from one month to one year postimplant. Because the controls and implant users responded similarly to a change in speaking condition, it is inferred that auditory feedback, although demonstrably important for maintaining normative values of vowel contrasts, is not needed to maintain the distinctiveness of those contrasts in different speaking conditions.  相似文献

Teachers have a high percentage of voice problems. For voice disordered teachers, resonant voice therapy is hypothesized to reduce voice problems. No research has been done on the physiological, acoustic, and aerodynamic effects of resonant voice therapy for school teachers. The purpose of this study is to investigate resonant voice therapy outcome from perceptual, physiological, acoustic, aerodynamic, and functional aspects for female teachers with voice disorders. A prospective study was designed for this research. The research subjects were 24 female teachers in Taipei. All subjects received resonant voice therapy in groups of 4 subjects, 90 minutes per session, and 1 session per week for 8 weeks. The outcome of resonant voice therapy was assessed from auditory perceptual judgment, videostroboscopic examination, acoustic measurements, aerodynamic measurements, and functional measurements before and after therapy. After therapy the severity of roughness, strain, monotone, resonance, hard attack, and glottal fry in auditory perceptual judgments, the severity of vocal fold pathology, mucosal wave, amplitude, and vocal fold closure in videostroboscopic examinations, phonation threshold pressure, and the score of physical scale in the Voice Handicap Index were significantly reduced. The speaking Fo, maximum range of speaking Fo, and maximum range of speaking intensity were significantly increased after therapy. No significant change was found in perturbation and breathiness measurements after therapy. Resonant voice therapy is effective for school teachers and is suggested as one of the therapy approaches in clinics for this population.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was an effect of speaking context on the elicitation of habitual pitch [speaking fundamental frequency (SFF)]. Six simulated speaking contexts were created (speaking during a voice evaluation, speaking in public, speaking to a peer, speaking to a superior, speaking to a subordinate, and speaking to a parent or spouse), and the SFF for 30 adult women with normal voice was compared across these contexts. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed a statistically significant (P < 0.001) effect of simulated speaking context on SFF, with post hoc analyses indicating a statistically significant difference in SFF while "speaking to a superior" (P < 0.001) and "speaking to a subordinate" (P < 0.001). Possible reasons for an effect of speaking context are discussed. Also, the implications of the use of varied speaking contexts when eliciting SFF are discussed, as is the possibility of an effect of speaking context on the elicitation of other clinically useful voice parameters.  相似文献

A phonetogram is a graph showing the sound pressure level (SPL) of softest and loudest phonation over the entire fundamental frequency range of a voice. A physiological interpretation of a phonetogram is facilitated if the SPL is measured with a flat frequency curve and if the vowel /a/ is used. It was found that in soft phonation, the SPL is mainly dependent on the amplitude of the fundamental, while in loud phonation, the SPL is mainly determined by overtones. The short-term SPL variation, i.e., the level variation within a tone, was about 5 dB in soft phonation and close to 2 dB in loud phonation. For two normal voices the long-term SPL variation, calculated as the mean standard deviation of SPL for day-to-day variation, was found to be between 2.4 and 3.4 dB in soft and loud phonation. Speakers who raise their loudness of phonation also tend to raise their mean voice fundamental frequency. Measures obtained from speaking at various voice levels were combined so that typical pathways could be introduced into the phonetogram. The average slope of these pathways was 0.3–0.5 st/dB for healthy subjects. Averaged phonetograms for male singers and male nonsingers did not differ significantly, but averaged phonetograms for female singers and female nonsingers did, in that the upper contour was higher for the female singers. Averaged phonetograms for female patients with non-organic dysphonia showed significantly lower SPL values in loudest phonation as compared to healthy female subjects, while no corresponding difference was seen for males in this regard. With respect to the SPL values for softest phonation, male dysphonic patients showed significantly higher SPL values than healthy male subjects, while no corresponding difference was seen in female subjects. The subglottal pressure mirrored these phonetogram differences between healthy and pathological voices. The averaged phonetograms of female patients after voice therapy showed an increased similarity with those of normal voices. For the male patients the averaged phonetogram did not change significantly after therapy.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was an effect of duration of speaking on determination of habitual pitch. Five speaking periods commonly used to elicit habitual pitch in clinical voice evaluations were compared (1, 5, 15, 30, and 60 seconds). Thirty female speakers with normal voices participated. Results of a within-subject univariate F-test revealed a statistically significant (p < 0.001) difference in habitual pitch among the speaking periods. Habitual pitch for the 1-second and 60-second speaking periods were found to be statistically significantly (p < 0.05) different than all remaining speaking periods, and the habitual pitch for the 30-second speaking period was found to be statistically significantly (p < 0.05) different than 60-second speaking period. Implications for the use of various speaking durations when determining habitual pitch are discussed, as is the possibility of a speaking duration effect on determination of other pitch-related voice parameters.  相似文献

A systematic analysis has been performed for many-years experimental data obtained in the wind tunnel T-203 (SibNIA) for testing the models of passenger and transport aircraft for the case of harmonic oscillation at the pitch angle for low subsonic velocities. The key features of behavior of aerodynamic derivatives coefficients and dependencies of current values of normal force coefficient and longitudinal moment coefficient on the angle of attack have been demonstrated for the stalling modes of streamlining. It was demonstrated that at near-critical angles of attack, we have a strong dependency of aerodynamic derivatives of pitch moment on the normalized oscillation frequency for the range of natural values; this makes the traditional mathematical model of aerodynamic loads (uses the aerodynamic derivatives at fixed frequencies of oscillation) unfit for the considered scope of experimental tasks.  相似文献

This study examined the perception and acoustics of a large corpus of vowels spoken in consonant-vowel-consonant syllables produced in citation-form (lists) and spoken in sentences at normal and rapid rates by a female adult. Listeners correctly categorized the speaking rate of sentence materials as normal or rapid (2% errors) but did not accurately classify the speaking rate of the syllables when they were excised from the sentences (25% errors). In contrast, listeners accurately identified the vowels produced in sentences spoken at both rates when presented the sentences and when presented the excised syllables blocked by speaking rate or randomized. Acoustical analysis showed that formant frequencies at syllable midpoint for vowels in sentence materials showed "target undershoot" relative to citation-form values, but little change over speech rate. Syllable durations varied systematically with vowel identity, speaking rate, and voicing of final consonant. Vowel-inherent-spectral-change was invariant in direction of change over rate and context for most vowels. The temporal location of maximum F1 frequency further differentiated spectrally adjacent lax and tense vowels. It was concluded that listeners were able to utilize these rate- and context-independent dynamic spectrotemporal parameters to identify coarticulated vowels, even when sentential information about speaking rate was not available.  相似文献

The limit cycle flutter of a two-dimensional wing with non-linear pitching stiffness is investigated. For modelling the aerodynamic forces of the wing steady linear and non-linear models as well as an unsteady model were used. The flutter speed was calculated using the harmonic balance method and by predicting Hopf bifurcation. Analytical solutions based on the centre manifold theory and normal forms were obtained as were results given by the harmonic balance method. The analytical solutions were compared with those obtained by numerical integration. The results show that the harmonic balance method can forecast flutter speed with a good accuracy while analytical solutions based on centre manifold theorem are accurate only in a small neighbourhood of the bifurcation point. The oscillation of the airfoil after flutter for two different models, linear and non-linear pitching stiffness were compared with each other and the flutter speeds for two linear steady and an unsteady aerodynamic model calculated. The obtained results show that flutter analysis based on the linear steady model is conservative only for the ratios of plunge frequency to pitch frequency lower than 1.  相似文献

The relationship of lung pressure, fundamental frequency, peak airflow, open quotient, and maximal flow declination rate to vocal intensity for a normal speaking, young male control group and an elderly male group was investigated. The control group consisted of 17 healthy male subjects with a mean age of 30 years and the elderly group consisted of 11 healthy male subjects with a mean age of 77 years. Data were collected at three levels of vocal intensity: soft, comfortable, and loud, corresponding to 25%, 50%, and 75% of dynamic range, respectively. Phonational threshold pressure and lung pressure were obtained using the intraoral technique. The oral airflow waveform was inverse filtered to provide an approximation to the glottal airflow waveform from which measures of fundamental frequency, peak airflow, open quotient, and maximal flow declination rate were determined. Excess lung pressure was calculated as lung pressure minus estimated phonational threshold pressure. The results show for both groups an increase in sound pressure level across the conditions, with corresponding increases in lung pressure, excess lung pressure, fundamental frequency, peak airflow, and maximal flow declination rate. Open quotient decreased with increasing vocal intensity. Lung pressure, sound pressure level, and peak airflow were all found to be significantly greater for the control group than for the elderly group at each condition. Open quotient was found to be significantly lower in the control group than in the elderly group at each condition. No significant difference was observed for excess lung pressure, phonational threshold pressure, fundamental frequency, or maximal flow declination rate between the two groups. These results show that a difference in vocal intensity does exist between young and elderly voices and that this difference is the result of differences in lung pressure, peak airflow, and open quotient.

Acoustic analysis of the speaking voice after thyroidectomy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Voices of 47 female patients were analyzed before and after thyroidectomy, with preservation of the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves and normal vocal fold motility during the observation period. A mean decrease of the speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) of 12 Hz was found on day 4; in 8 patients the postoperative vocal pitch was more than 2 semitones lower. The distance between the highest and lowest F0 during speaking was diminished (speech was more monotone) and the vocal jitter was elevated. In the frequency spectrum, there was a diminished prominence of the harmonics. The other spectral parameters (as the slope of the spectrum and the H1/H2 ratio) were unchanged. All changes had disappeared the fifteenth day, except for a lower SFF (>2 semitones) in 2 cases. It is concluded that after normal dissection of the laryngeal nerves, and in the absence of vocal fold paresis, other reasons for voice changes immediately after thyroidectomy remain: alterations in the neck muscles, in the laryngeal mucosa, and in the patient's general condition. Although the effects seem limited and of short duration, knowledge of them is helpful when informing the patient before thyroid surgery.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate kinematic characteristics of the speech of children and adults under three speaking conditions. The effects of requiring subjects to produce speech stimuli were studied as they spoke: in a normal manner; at a faster than normal rate; and while holding a bite block between their molars to restrict mandibular movement. Using a strain gauge monitoring system, superior-inferior lip and jaw movement data were collected from 24 subjects--six in each of three groups of normally developing children and an adult control group. For the normal condition, it was found that net peak velocity (i.e., the sum of the peak velocities of the individual articulators) was quite comparable among the three groups of children and the adults. Net peak velocity increased significantly for all four groups of subjects when they spoke at a fast rate, but it did not increase significantly in the bite block condition. For most measures, there were typically no differences in peak velocity across the various speaking conditions when comparing the three groups of children to one another. In general, articulatory displacement data showed patterns quite similar to those of the peak velocity data. In addition to the displacement and peak velocity data, pilot data are discussed concerning temporal properties of articulatory phases and also concerning maximum, nonspeech articulatory gestures.  相似文献

The present study addresses two questions: (a) Is the action and/orposture of the velopharyngeal valve conducive to allow significant resonance during Western tradition classical singing? (b) How do the actions of the velo-pharyngeal valve observed in this style of singing compare with normal speech? A photodetector system was used to observe the area function of the velopharyngeal port during speech and classical style singing. Identical speech samples were produced by each subject in a normal speaking voice and then in the low, medium, and high singing ranges. Results indicate that in these four singers the velopharyngeal port was closed significantly longer in singing than in speaking samples. The amount of time the velopharyngeal port was opened was greatest in speech and diminished as the singer ascended in pitch. In the high voice condition, little or no opening of the velopharyngeal port was measured.  相似文献

Experimental values of complexes of aerodynamic derivatives were obtained in a wind tunnel and analyzed for subsonic flow of a passenger aircraft model with harmonic oscillations on the rolling and yawing angles. It was demonstrated that for near-critical angles of attack, the complexes of aerodynamic derivatives taken for rolling and yawing have a string dependency on the normalized oscillation frequency. It was proven that this dependency is driven by derivatives with respect to angular velocities and angular acceleration. A mathematical model for aerodynamic loads was developed; it can be applied for aircraft flight dynamic problems and has satisfactory approximation to experimental aerodynamic characteristics.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged (5x45 minute) reading (vocal loading) on fundamental frequency (F0), sound pressure level (SPL), subglottal (intraroral) pressure (p), and two glottal flow waveform parameters (AC amplitude of glottal flow, f, and negative peak amplitude of differentiated flow (d) of normal female and male subjects (N = 80) were studied. Two rest (morning and noon) and three loading (two in the morning and one in the afternoon) samples were recorded and analyzed. The glottal waveforms were obtained by inverse filtering of the acoustic pressure waveforms of speaking voice samples. The analyses were based on measurement and inverse filtering of the first stressed syllable of "paappa" words repeated 3x5 times for normal, as soft as possible, and as loud as possible phonation. In normal phonation the parameter values changed statistically significantly due to loading. In many cases the values obtained in the morning samples changed after the first loading session. This is interpreted as a vocal "warming-up effect." Especially in soft phonation p, d, and f were sensitive indicators of vocal loading. In both normal and soft phonation, the SPL, p, d, and f values tended to rise due to prolonged reading in the morning and afternoon samples, indicating increased effort (normal phonation) and a rise in the phonatory threshold (soft phonation). The lunch break vocal rest ("rest effect") considerably affected the parameter values in many cases.  相似文献
