The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service teachers’ views about the history of mathematics course in which GeoGebra was used. The qualitative research design was used in this study. The participants of the study consisted of 23 pre-service mathematics teachers studying at a state university in Turkey. An open-ended questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. Qualitative data obtained from the pre-service teachers were analyzed by means of content analysis. As a result, it was determined that GeoGebra software was an effective tool in the learning and teaching of the history of mathematics.  相似文献

This study was carried out to examine the effects of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) using dynamic software on the achievement of students in mathematics in the topic of reflection symmetry. The study also aimed to ascertain the pre-service mathematics teachers’ opinions on the use of CAI in mathematics lessons. In the study, a mixed research method was used. The study group of this research consists of 30 pre-service mathematics teachers. The data collection tools used include a reflection knowledge test, a survey and observations. Based on the analysis of the data obtained from the study, the use of CAI had a positive effect on achievement in the topic of reflection symmetry of the pre-service mathematics teachers. The pre-service mathematics teachers were found to largely consider that a mathematics education which is carried out utilizing CAI will be more beneficial in terms of ‘visualization’, ‘saving of time’ and ‘increasing interest/attention in the lesson’. In addition, it was found that the vast majority of them considered using computers in their teaching on the condition that the learning environment in which they would be operating has the appropriate technological equipment.  相似文献

There is, now, an extensive critical literature on gender and the nature of science, three aspects of which, philosophy, pedagogy and epistemology, seem to be pertinent to a discussion of gender and mathematics. Although untangling the inter-relationships between these three is no simple matter, they make effective starting points in order to ask similar questions of mathematics to those asked by our colleagues in science. In the process of asking such questions, a major difference between the empirical approach of the sciences, and the analytic nature of mathematics, is exposed and leads towards the definition of a new epistemological position in mathematics.  相似文献

Is there a shared meaning of “mathematical proof” among researchers in mathematics education? Almost all researchers may agree on a formal definition of mathematical proof. But beyond this minimal agreement, what is the state of our field? After three decades of activity in this area, being familiar with the most influential pieces of work, I realize that the sharing of keywords hides important differences in the understanding. These differences could be obstacles to scientific progress in this area, if they are not made explicit and addressed as such. In this essay I take a sample of research projects which have impacted the teaching and learning of mathematical proof, in order to describe where the gaps are. Then I suggest a possible scientific programme which aspires to strengthen the research practice in this domain. Eventually, I make the additional claim that this programme could hold for other areas of research in mathematics education.  相似文献

This study aimed to reveal the effects of teaching with concrete learning objects taken from the history of mathematics on student achievement. Being a quasi-experimental study, it was conducted with two grade 8 classes in a secondary school located in Trabzon. The experimental group consisted of 27 students and the control group consisted of 25. Data were collected by using worksheets, an achievement exam and written opinion forms. The data from the achievement exam were analysed by using the Mann-Whitney U-test while the data from written opinion forms were analysed through content analysis. The Mann–Whitney U-test results showed a significant difference between the mean ranks of the experimental and control groups in favour of the former. Findings from the written opinion forms suggested that the students found the activities to be instructive and fun, enjoyed using concrete models in their classes, and learned from discovering the rules. It was also found that students had previously not engaged in similar activities and had only experienced the history of mathematics through the life stories and works of mathematicians and the representation of ancient numbers at the beginning of each unit.  相似文献

In a teaching experiment carried out at the secondary school level, we observe the students’ processes in modelling activities, where the use of graphic calculators and connectivity software gives a common working space in the class. The study shows results in continuity with others emerged in the previous ICMEs and some new ones, and offers an analysis of the novelty of the software in introducing new ways to support learning communities in the construction of mathematical meanings. The study is conducted in a semiotic-cultural framework that considers the introduction and the evolution of signs, such as words, gestures and interaction with technologies, to understand how students construct mathematical meanings, working as a community of practice. The novelty of the results consists in the presence of two technologies for students: the “private” graphic calculators and the “public” screen of the connectivity software. Signs for the construction of knowledge are mediated by both of them, but the second does it in a social way, strongly supporting the work of the learning community.  相似文献

This observational study used data from 270 second-grade students to investigate the association between students' strategy use for multidigit addition and subtraction and their mathematics achievement. Based on strategies they used during a mathematics interview, students were classified into the following strategy groups: (a) standard algorithm, (b) invented, (c) mixed, and (d) unclassified. We used two-level hierarchical linear regression to investigate the association between students' strategy use and their performance on a standardized test in mathematics. Results indicated that students in the mixed strategy groups had significantly higher mathematics achievement than those in the standard algorithm and the unclassified groups.  相似文献

Research on the influence of multiple representations in mathematics education gained new momentum when personal computers and software started to become available in the mid-1980s. It became much easier for students who were not fond of algebraic representations to work with concepts such as function using graphs or tables. Research on how students use such software showed that they shaped the tools to their own needs, resulting in an intershaping relationship in which tools shape the way students know at the same time the students shape the tools and influence the design of the next generation of tools. This kind of research led to the theoretical perspective presented in this paper: knowledge is constructed by collectives of humans-with-media. In this paper, I will discuss how media have shaped the notions of problem and knowledge, and a parallel will be developed between the way that software has brought new possibilities to mathematics education and the changes that the Internet may bring to mathematics education. This paper is, therefore, a discussion about the future of mathematics education. Potential scenarios for the future of mathematics education, if the Internet becomes accepted in the classroom, will be discussed.  相似文献

If the use of a computer algebra system (CAS) is to be meaningful and have an impact on students, then it must be grounded in good pedagogy and have some clearly defined goals. It is the authors' belief that an important goal for teaching mathematics with the CAS is that courses be designed so that students can become active participants in their learning experience, planning the problem-solving strategies and carrying them out. The CAS becomes an important tool and a partner in this learning process. To this end, here the authors' have linked the use of the CAS to an existing classification scheme for Mathematical Tasks, called the MATH Taxonomy, and illustrated, through concrete examples, how the goals of teaching and learning of mathematics can be set using this classification together with the CAS.  相似文献

The role of computers in elementary school math classrooms is still being determined. Although computers are promised effective visual tools to promote independent work and study; many educators neglect to use them. Since there are varying points of view, individual teachers generally decide whether to incorporate computers into their methods.Purpose: My experiment analyzes and quantifies the value of computers in elementary school math classrooms.Method: Over a course of 11 weeks, my first grade class worked with the teaching software “Mathematikus 1” (Lorenz, 2000). Using both interpersonal and video observation, I completed written evaluations of each pair of my students' will and ability to cooperate, communicate and independently solve mathematical problems. Conclusion: My results show that it is generally beneficial to use computers in elementary school math lessons. However, some elements of said software leave room for improvement.  相似文献

The profusion of resources, mostly on the Internet, makes the issue of their quality more and more pressing. Teachers often find themselves unable to choose from among them those that would be the most relevant to their educational goal and to the context of their classes. In our previous work, we claimed that acquiring resource analysis skills is one of the keys to the teachers’ professional development supporting the integration of dynamic geometry systems. Based on this assumption, we have designed a quality questionnaire for the i2geo repository aiming at framing the analysis of available resources by the platform users. The research reported in this paper, which is a continuation of this work, explores the way the quality criteria are taken into account in the design and use of resources by members of the community that has emerged around the repository and sheds light on possible evolutions of teachers’ and teacher educators’ professional practices due to their involvement in the resource quality evaluation.  相似文献

This paper explores a geometrical way to sketch graphs of the general quadratic in two variables with Geometer's Sketchpad. To do this, a geometric procedure as described by De Temple is used, bearing in mind that this general quadratic equation (1) represents all the possible conics (conics sections), and the fact that five points (no three of which are collinear) uniquely determine a conic.  相似文献

The flexible and adaptive use of strategies and representations is part of a cognitive variability, which enables individuals to solve problems quickly and accurately. The development of these abilities is not simply based on growing experience; instead, we can assume that their acquisition is based on complex cognitive processes. How these processes can be described and how these can be fostered through instructional environments are research questions, which are yet to be answered satisfactorily. This special issue on flexible and adaptive use of strategies and representations in mathematics education encompasses contributions of several authors working in this particular field. They present recent research on flexible and adaptive use of strategies or representations based on theoretical and empirical perspectives. Two commentary articles discuss the presented results against the background of existing theories.  相似文献

The decline in enrolments and interest in advanced mathematics studies is of growing concern internationally. Previous research suggests that a range of factors can influence students' academic decisions. The focus of the paper is on one of these potential sources of influence— students' perceptions of the tertiary mathematics learning environment. Data from two large-scale surveys (N = 1883) and from a smaller number of interviews (N = 71) with students enrolled in tertiary mathematics courses at five Australian universities are presented and discussed. Collectively, the survey results and the interview data reveal considerable variations in the quality of the teaching and student support available in different mathematics departments. Students' comments were constructive and offered valuable ideas for improving the existing situation, retaining current students and attracting others to mathematics.  相似文献

When students are working with hand held technology, such as graphic calculators, we usually only see the outcomes of their activities in the form of a contribution to a written solution of a mathematical problem. It is more difficult to capture their process of thinking or actions as they use the technology to solve the problem. In this paper we report on two case studies that follow the progress of students as they solve mathematical problems. We use software that works in the background of the graphic calculator capturing the students' keystrokes as they use the calculator. The aim of the research studies described in this paper was to provide insights into the working styles of these students. Through a detailed analysis of their graphic calculator keystrokes, interviews and associated written solutions we will discuss the effectiveness of their solution strategies and the efficiency of their use of the technology and identify some barriers to the use of graphic calculators in mathematical problem solving.  相似文献

Mathematics and science have similar learning processes (SLPs) and it has been proposed that courses focused on these and other similarities promote transfer across disciplines. However, it is not known how the use of these processes in lessons taught to children change throughout a preservice teacher education course or which are most likely to transfer within and between disciplines. Three hundred and ninety lesson plans written by 113 preservice teachers (PSTs) from 10 sections of an elementary mathematics/science methods course were analyzed. PSTs taught an eight‐lesson sequence to children: five science lessons followed by three mathematics lessons. The findings suggested that: (a) PSTs needed to only teach three mathematics lessons, after five science lessons, to reach the same number of SLPs used in the five science lessons; (b) some SLPs are highly correlated processes (HCPs) and are more likely to transfer within and between science and mathematics lessons; and (c) PSTs needed to teach no mathematics lessons, after four science lessons, to reach the same number of HCPs used in the four science lessons. Implications include centering courses on multiple and varied representations of learning processes within problem‐solving, and HCPs may be essential similarities of problem‐solving which promote transfer.  相似文献

This paper describes theoretical design principles emerging from the development of tasks for standard undergraduate mathematics courses that address applications to teaching secondary mathematics. While researchers recognize that mathematical knowledge for teaching is a form of applied mathematics, applications to teaching remain largely absent from curriculum resources for courses for mathematics majors. We developed various materials that contain applications to teaching that have been integrated into four standard undergraduate mathematics courses. Three primary principles influenced the design of the tasks that prepare future teachers to learn and apply mathematics in a manner central to their future work. Additionally, this paper provides guidance for instructors desiring to develop or implement similar applications. The process of developing these tasks underscores the importance of key features regarding the roles of human beings in the tasks, the intentional focus on advanced content connected to school mathematics, and the integration of active engagement strategies.  相似文献
