This paper documents an experimental study that was conducted to demonstrate the sensitivity of the shear gage to the presence of normal strains. The shear gage is a specially designed strain gage rosette that measures the average shear strain in the test section of notched specimens such as the losipescu, Arcan and compact shear specimens. These specimens can have complicated stress states with high shear and normal strain gradients. To evaluate the sensitivity of the shear gage to normal strains, shear gages were tested on an Arcan specimen. The Arcan specimen is a notched specimen that can be loaded in pure shear (90 deg), pure tension (0 deg) and at intermediate 15- deg increments. The shear modulus for an aluminum specimen was determined at each of these loading angles. It was found that the gages display nearly zero sensitivity to normal strains ( x, y). Moiré interferometry was used to document the shear and normal strain distributions in the test section and to provide an independent method for determining the average shear strain. These results reinforce the robust nature of testing with the shear gage.  相似文献

This paper describes an experimental and numerical investigation on the fracture behaviour of a cast AlSi9MgMn aluminium alloy. In the experiments, a modified Arcan test set-up was used to study mixed-mode fracture. During testing, the tension load and the displacement of the actuator of the test machine were recorded, simultaneously as a high-resolution digital camera was used to record a speckle-patterned surface of the specimen. The recorded images were post-processed using an in-house digital image correlation (DIC) software to obtain information of the displacement and strain fields in the specimen during the test. In addition, some newly implemented features in the DIC software allowed us to detect and follow the crack propagation in the material. The numerical calculations were carried out with a user-defined material model implemented in an explicit finite element code. In the model, the material behaviour is described by the classical J2 flow theory, while fracture was modelled by the Cockcroft–Latham criterion, assuming the fracture parameter to follow a modified weakest-link Weibull distribution. With the proposed probabilistic fracture modelling approach, the fracture parameter can be introduced as a random variable in the finite element simulations. Crack propagation was modelled by element erosion, and a non-local damage formulation was used to reduce mesh-size sensitivity. To reveal the effect of mesh density and meshing technique on the force–displacement curves and the crack propagation, several different meshes were used in the numerical simulations of the modified Arcan tests. The numerical results were finally compared to the experimental data and the agreement between the measured and predicted response was evaluated.  相似文献

Various compression test methods for composite materials have been developed during the past few years incorporating specimens of different gage lengths and modes of load introduction. Most of these test methods are not recognized as standards at the present time. Thus the question arises as to whether these various test methods produce similar results.Two commonly used test fixtures are compared in detail here, viz., the ASTM Standard D 3410 IITRI compression test fixture, and another often referred to as the Boeing-Modified D 695 compression test fixture. The IITRI fixture loads a specimen of 12.7-mm gage length via shear through end tabs and wedge grips. The Boeing-Modified D 695 fixture also uses a tabbed specimen, but with only a 4.8-mm gage length and loaded directly on its ends.Hercules S2/3501-6 glass/epoxy and AS4/3501-6 carbon/epoxy unidirectional composites were used as the primary material configurations in the present comparison. Highstrength, highly orthotropic materials such as these are among the most difficult composites to test successfully in compression. However, a carbon/epoxy quasi-isotropic laminate was tested as well.The results obtained are compared with similar data available in the literature. It is concluded that there is relatively little influence of specimen gage length as long as it is sufficiently small so that gross buckling does not occur. Also, the differences between shear loading and end loading of the specimen are small, as long as the ends of the end-loaded specimen do not crush, and that in either case the tabs do not debond.  相似文献

ASTM losipescu sheart test fixtures often crush the loaded edges of high shear strength specimens before shear failure occurs between the notches. To alleviate this problem, two new shear test fixtures were designed and built. The first uses a pivoting load surface to track the specimen shape as it changes under load. The second uses a rounded load surface optimized to produce a uniform bearing pressure along the loaded edge of a quasi-isotropic sheet-molding compound (SMC) specimen at shear failure. Finite element analyses and strain gage data are presented that describe the behavior of the baseline ASTM, pivoting load surface and rounded load surface fixtures. A substantial reduction in bearing stress and edge crushing was obtained with the rounded load surface fixture. Additionally, the modified surface optimized to test SMC specimens showed no tendency to change the shear strength measured in other composite specimens.  相似文献

The shear strength of a 4-ply unidirectional composite laminate consisting of carbon fibers (T650-35) and a polyimide matrix (HFPE-II-52) was measured over a temperature range of 25 to 315°C. The tests were performed using a Iosipescu test sample, modified to provide a more uniform shear stress distribution across the gauge section and loaded with an Arcan type test fixture. The test specimen design is based on the results of an extensive finite element study. Shear strength tests were performed on dry, 50% RH and 100% RH moisture saturated samples. Results of the experiment show that shear strength decreases from approximately 120 MPa at 25°C to 60 MPa at 315°C and that moisture saturated samples have a 5–10 MPa lower shear strength than dry samples.  相似文献

The interaction between the isopescu shear-test specimen and the modified Wyoming shear-test fixture was investigated. This involved three areas of study. First, strip strain gages were applied to the specimen contact surfaces to measure strains induced by the fixture. While it has generally been assumed that the fixture induces an asymmetric load into the specimen, the measured strains indicated a nonasymmetric loading. Second, the effect of an out-of-plane moment, externally applied to the fixture, on gage section shear strains was observed. The shear strains observed were small leading to the conclusion that the fixture is very resistant to out-of-plane moments. Finally, the effect of fixture misalignment on the observed shear modulus was determined. The results indicate that the observed shear modulus increased significantly for slight amounts of misalignment. Therefore, experimental techniques should be modified to include a check for misalignment. Beyond this, it is suggested that the fixture design be modified to prevent misalignment and to achieve an asymmetric loading of the specimen.  相似文献

The design and validation of a new fixture for the shear testing of cellular solids are presented. The fixture is an extended version of a picture-frame shear fixture (EPF) and is suited for comparatively thick rectangular block specimens. The stress state in the specimen is analyzed using a detailed finite element model. The finite element model is based on a 3D CAD model and incorporates friction in the revolute joints. Using specimens with low stiffness, a nearly pure and uniform shear stress state is induced in the specimen. A correction factor for the shear stress is derived which takes into account the friction in the joints and the nonuniformity of the shear stress distribution in the gauge section. The shear response of the polymer foam Rohacell® 200 WF is determined in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the EPF. The strain state is analyzed by means of digital image correlation and is detected to be very pure and uniform on the specimen’s surface, as predicted by the numerical analysis. The shear modulus obtained with the EPF is in good agreement with the calculated shear modulus derived from tensile tests on the same material. In addition, there is only little scatter of the strength values over the tested specimens which further confirms the accuracy of the new fixture.  相似文献

This paper deals with the development of a new experimental technique for the multi-axial testing of flat sheets and its application to advanced high strength steels. In close analogy with the traditional tension-torsion test for bulk materials, the sheet material is subject to combined tension and shear loading. Using a custom-made dual actuator hydraulic testing machine, combinations of normal and tangential loading are applied to the boundaries of a flat sheet metal specimen. The specimen shape is optimized to provide uniform stress and strain fields within its gage section. Finite element simulations are carried out to verify the approximate formulas for the shear and normal stress components at the specimen center. The corresponding strain fields are determined from digital image correlation. Two test series are performed on a TRIP-assisted steel sheet. The experimental results demonstrate that this new experimental technique can be used to investigate the large deformation behavior of advanced high strength steel sheets. The evolution of the yield surface of the TRIP700 steel is determined for both radial and non-proportional loading paths.  相似文献

高应变率下的冲击剪切实验技术是材料动态力学行为及其微观机理研究的重要基础.采用分离式霍普金森压杆(split Hopkinson pressure bar)装置一般可以获得材料在104s-1以内应变率的动态力学性能.在超过104s-1的应变率下对材料进行冲击剪切测试时,通常需要采用高速压剪飞片技术或由气炮发射子弹对试样进行直接加载.本文提出一种可用于传统霍普金森压杆技术的新型双剪切试样,可以在103~105s-1剪应变率范围实现对材料剪切性能的精确测量;同时,可以对材料的变形及失效过程进行直接观测.试样与压杆之间避免了复杂的界面或连接装置,通过转接头可以保证试样与压杆直接接触,提高测试精度,同时可以防止因试样的横向位移而导致的非均匀变形.获得了紫铜在1400~75000s-1应变率下的剪应力-剪应变曲线,并采用计算软件"ABAQUS/Explicit"对双剪切试样的动态加载过程进行了数值模拟和结果验证.分析表明,剪切区的主要区域内剪切成分占主导地位,其应力应变场沿厚度及宽度方向基本呈均匀分布.实验得到的剪应力-剪应变曲线与模拟结果吻合较好,说明所提出的基于分离式霍普金森压杆系统的双剪切试样可以为材料的高应变率力学性能测试提供一种方便有效的加载技术.   相似文献

Various untabbed, thickness-tapered compression specimen geometries were studied experimentally. Both shear-loaded and end-loaded compression test methods were used to measure the strength and stiffness of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy unidirectional composite material systems. The compressive strength was found to be strongly dependent on specimen geometry, loading conditions, and the cracks that initiated in the taper regions and propagated to various lengths prior to catastrophic failure. A specific thickness-tapered specimen geometry that produced compressive strengths significantly higher than conventional specimen configurations resulted from the experimental optimization process. A method of determining compressive strains, and thus the compressive modulus, using this same specimen geometry and strain gages was also demonstrated.  相似文献

The quasi-static crush behavior of aluminum 5052-H38 honeycomb specimens under non-proportional compression-dominant combined loads is investigated by experiments. A test fixture was designed such that dominant compressive and shear loads with respect to the strongest material symmetry direction can be controlled and applied independently. Compression-dominant combined loads and pure compressive loads were applied in different sequences to induce non-proportional combined loads. The experimental results show that the normal crush and shear strengths in combined loading regions and the normal crush strengths in pure compressive loading regions of the non-proportional combined loads are quite consistent with the existing phenomenological yield criterion based on the experimental normal crush and shear strengths under proportional combined loads. The experimental results also indicate that the sequence of loading paths for the non-proportional combined loads does not affect the crush strengths when compared with those obtained under proportional combined loads. In addition, the experimental results indicate that the non-normality plastic flow behavior of honeycomb specimens under non-proportional combined loads is consistent with that under proportional combined loads. Finally, specimens crushed under non-proportional combined loads show developments of different stacking patterns of folds in different loading regions of the non-proportional combined loads. The experimental results suggest that the incremental stress–strain relation for the transition loading path within the so-called yield surface from one yield state to another may be related to the displacement increments that correspond to the change of microscopic folding mechanisms instead of the usual elastic relation according to the classical plasticity theory.  相似文献

利用分离式霍普金森压杆加载Ta2钛合金扁平闭合帽形受迫剪切试样,结合数字图像相关法和"冻结"试样的微观金相观察,研究剪切区剪切应变的演化、绝热剪切带形成条件等.结果显示:受迫剪切试样在动态加载过程,剪切区剪切应变不断集中,形成绝热剪切带,裂纹沿绝热剪切带发展;随加载率提高,绝热剪切起始临界应变减小;进一步利用数字图像相关法DIC场应变分析及金相微观观测对比,利用卸载回复特性对绝热剪切带起始临界条件进行了讨论,计算的绝热剪切带起始时温升仅为86℃.材料软化可能不是绝热剪切带起始的控制条件,相反是由于绝热剪切带形成造成的应变高度集中发展导致温度急剧升高.  相似文献

A fixture for testing curved sandwich beams in flexure was designed and evaluated. The test specimen is a continuous sandwich beam consisting of a central circular 90° region connected by two straight legs. The fixture was designed according to the four-point flexure principle to produce a pure bending moment in the curved region. The validity of the test fixture in producing the desired loading was examined by fitting a curved aluminum bar of similar bending stiffness as the sandwich beams considered. Strain gage readings were successfully compared to predictions from curved homogeneous beam theory. In addition, the deflection of the beam at the loading points was analyzed using straight and curved beam theory for the various sections of the beam, and predictions were compared to measured load-displacement response. Good agreement was achieved between experimental and analytical results lending confidence to the test principle. Curved sandwich beams consisting of glass/polyester face sheets over a PVC foam core were tested to failure and the loading response of the beams and their failure behavior are discussed. It was found that the beams failed at the upper face/core interface due to radial tension stress.  相似文献

阐述了用实验确定在常温及静载和动载条件下韧性撕裂在三种管线钢材中传播时的断裂比能值。实验中采用了销钉加载双面开槽的双悬脊梁(DCB)试件。应用能量平衡法对实验结果进行了分析。考察了加载速率和试件厚度对撕裂韧性的影响。结果表明,管线钢材对韧性撕裂传播的阻力在动载条件下增大,对较薄的试件及应变率敏感性较高的材料其增大更为明显。对于纯剪切断裂的传播来说,撕裂韧性一般随试件厚度的增大而增加。  相似文献

采用尺度关联的一体化设计方法开展了旋转周期圆环结构的拓扑优化设计研究,以宏观 结构的最大刚度为目标,研究了材料表征体胞尺度、构型以及不同载荷作用形式对蜂窝夹芯 圆环结构优化结果的影响. 所提出的无量纲结构构型因子实现了优化结构的结构效率量化评 估. 结合SIMP材料模型和周长控制方法,实现了宏观结构和细观表征体胞的优化设计,获得 清晰的材料分布. 数值算例表明,尺度关联的一体化设计方法能有效地完成圆环结构的拓扑 优化设计,设计结果充分反映体胞尺度效应对旋转周期圆环结构夹芯构型的影响.  相似文献

The shear properties of brittle and highly porous carbon (graphitic) foam cannot be measured reliably with most standard test methods, such as single rail, double rail, Iosipescu shear, etc. A new testing device has been developed to accurately measure the shear stiffness and strength of carbon foam or other porous materials. Specimens of cylindrical cross section are used to reduce the high stress concentration that normally occurs in the vicinity of the grip section. Since strain gages could not be installed on the specimen surface (due to porosity), the shear strain is determined from the specimen end rotation. A high resolution in the rotational measurement is achieved by using a stepper motor with multiple gear reduction. In view of testing low modulus material, the load cell of the fixture was mounted onto an axial roller to relieve the axial constraint while twisting the specimens. The accuracy of the measurement and calibration of the test fixture has been demonstrated by measuring the shear modulus of two plastic (polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and urethane).  相似文献

在金属薄板的轴向疲劳S-N曲线测试中,研究将一种侧向防弯曲夹具应用于存在压向载荷的试验。通过粘贴应变片方法测量试样的表面应力,对试样的受力情况做了定量的分析。测量结果表明试样安装防弯曲夹具后,基本消除了由压缩失稳产生的弯曲应力。且通过对不同拧紧方式的测量,表明一定的夹紧力下不对试验力产生影响。试验夹具设计成对试样中心轴线的支撑而让边缘疲劳敏感部位处在非接触状态,试样断口表明疲劳起源在这些并没有与试样接解的部位。用钛和铝两种材料的薄板在不同试验机上进行了不同寿命和频率的试验,试验结果与正应力比试验同时给出以对比,各种研究表明本试验有效解决了薄板疲劳受压时的失稳问题。  相似文献

Commercial cellular solids such as metal foams and honeycombs exhibit deformation and failure responses that are dependent on specimen size during testing. For foams, this size dependence originates from the fabrication-induced material and structural inhomogeneities, which cause the uncontrolled localization of deformation during the testing of foam cubes. Different peak loads and failure modes are observed in honeycomb specimens in the plate-shear configuration depending on specimen height. This size dependence causes difficulty in obtaining a more representative constitutive behavior of the material. It has recently been established that the size dependence under uniaxial compression can be eliminated with tapered cellular specimens, which enable controlled deformation at a given region of the specimen. This concept is extended in this paper to the biaxial testing of butterfly-shaped cellular specimens in the Arcan apparatus, which focuses deformation at the central section of the specimen. The Arcan apparatus has been modified such that all displacements at the boundaries of the specimen could be controlled during testing. As a consequence of this fully displacement controlled Arcan apparatus, a force perpendicular to that applied by the standard universal testing machine is generated and becomes significant. Thus, an additional load cell is integrated on the apparatus to measure this load. Example responses of butterfly-shaped specimens composed of aluminum alloy honeycomb, aluminum alloy foam and hybrid stainless-steel assembly are presented to illustrate the capabilities of this new testing method.  相似文献

The nonlinear behavior in shear and transverse compression of unidirectional AS4/PEEK and their interaction are investigated experimentally. The composite is rate dependent even at room temperature and its rate exponent is similar to that of neat PEEK. The material is tested under pure shear, pure compression and under biaxial loading histories. The biaxial tests are performed in a custom facility on thin strips of the material. The facility allows freedom to choose the loading path in the biaxial stress and strain spaces of interest. Tests are performed for three biaxial loading paths. In the first, the specimen is sheared then compressed while the shear stress is held constant; in the second, the specimen is compressed then sheared while the compressive stress is held constant; and in the third, the specimen is loaded simultaneously by proportional amounts of compression and shear. It was found that the induced deformation is influenced significantly by the loading history followed. Also, initial loading in shear or compression has only a modest effect on subsequent loading of the other type. An unorthodox yielding behavior for the composite results from this lack of interaction. Finally, the stresses at failure are found to trace an elliptical path in the shear–transverse compression plane, but the failure stress state is not significantly affected by the loading path followed.  相似文献
