Several chiral azobenzene compounds having different chiral substituents were synthesized. A cholesteric phase was induced by mixing each chiral azobenzene compound with a host non-chiral nematic liquid crystal (E44). The helical twisting power (HTP) as well as the change in HTP by trans-cis photoisomerization of the chiral azobenzene compound was dependent on the structure of the chiral substituents. A compensated nematic phase was induced by combination of E44, a chiral azobenzene compound and a non-photochromic chiral compound. Reversible switching between the compensated nematic phase and cholesteric phase was brought about by trans-cis photoisomerization of the chiral azobenzene compound in the liquid crystalline systems. An azobenzene compound substituted with a menthyl group showed the highest efficiency as the trigger for the switching; this efficiency was related to the compactness of the chiral group substituted within the azobenzene core moiety.  相似文献

Five photochromic chiral azobenzene compounds and one nonphotochromic chiral compound were synthesized and characterized by IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Cholesteric liquid crystalline phases were induced by mixing of the nonphotochromic chiral compound and one of the photochromic chiral azobenzene compounds in a host nematic liquid crystal (E44). The helical pitch of the induced cholesteric phase was determined by Cano's wedge method and the helical twisting power (HTP) of each sample was thus determined. The helical twisting powers of azobenzene compounds were decreased upon UV irradiation, due to trans-->cis photoisomerization of azobenzene molecules. Among the azobenzene compounds synthesized in our study, Azo-5, with isomannide (radical) as chiral photochromic dopant, showed the highest HTP and contrast ratio (Tmax/Tmin). Photoswitching between compensated nematic phase and cholesteric phase was achieved through reversible trans<-->cis photoisomerization of the chiral azobenzene molecules through irradiation with UV and visible light, respectively. Transmission rates (contrast ratios) increased with decreasing helical pitch length in the induced cholesteric phase. The influence of helical twisting power on the photoswitching behavior of chiral azobenzene compounds is discussed in detail.  相似文献

A series of chiral azobenzene compounds with branched terminal were synthesised, and the photosensitive performances were investigated accordingly. It was found that the photochemical properties were mainly affected by the trans–cis configuration of azobenzene and the linked position between the azobenzene and chiral centre. The para-type azobenzenes showed general photochemical decrease in helical twisting power (HTP), but the meta-type ones appeared interestingly showed photochemical increase in HTP. This work provided an effective method for designing molecules to control blue phase (BP) including adjusting colours, inducing BP and extending BP range, which was promising in the applications of optically addressable devices.  相似文献

Herein we report a group of five planar chiral molecules as photon‐mode chiral switches for the reversible control of the self‐assembled superstructures of doped chiral nematic liquid crystals. The chiral switches are composed of an asymmetrically substituted aromatic moiety and a photoisomerizing azobenzene unit connected in a cyclic manner through methylene spacers of varying lengths. All the molecules show conformational restriction in the rotation of the asymmetrically substituted aromatic moiety in both the E and Z states of the azobenzene units resulting in planar chirality with separable enantiomers. Our newly synthesized compounds in pure enantiomeric form show high helical twisting power (HTP) in addition to an improved change in HTP between the E and Z states. The molecule with a diphenylnaphthalene unit shows the highest ever known initial helical twisting power among chiral dopants with planar chirality. In addition to the reversible tuning of reflection colors, we employed the enantiomers of these five compounds in combination with four nematic liquid crystalline hosts to study their properties as molecular machines; the change in HTP of the chiral dopant upon photoisomerization induces rotation of the texture of the liquid crystal surfaces. Importantly, this study has revealed a linear dependence of the ratio of the difference between HTPs before and after irradiation against the absolute value of the initial HTP, not the absolute value of the change in helical twisting power between two states, on the angle of rotation of micro‐objects on chiral nematic liquid crystalline films. This study has also revealed that a change in irradiation intensity does not affect the maximum angle of rotation, but it does affect the speed of rotational reorganization of the cholesteric helix.  相似文献

In theory, both polarity and steric hindrance are basic factors which affect molecular interactions. To investigate the optical properties and steric structures of chiral compounds having different chiral moieties which affect the wavelength of light reflection in liquid crystal (LC) cells, a series of novel chiral compounds and azobenzene derivatives were synthesized. The liquid crystalline phases of the compounds were identified using small angle X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. Cholesteric LC cells with various synthesized chiral dopants which selectively reflect visible light were first prepared, the photochemical switching behaviour of colours was then investigated, with special reference to the change in transmittance in cholesteric LC cells containing an azobenzene derivative as a photoisomerizable guest molecule. Reversible isomerization of azobenzene molecules occurred in the cholesteric systems, resulting in a depression of TChI and a shift of the selectively reflected wavelength. We discuss the photochemically driven change in the helical pitch of the cholesteric LCs with respect to structural effects involving the chiral moieties. Molecular interactions caused by the added dopants, reliability and stability of the photoisomerization, and UV irradiation effects on the cholesteric LC cells were also investigated. A real image was recorded through a mask on a cholesteric LC cell fabricated in this investigation.  相似文献

Induced cholesteric polymeric networks with steroids as chiral components were prepared with the aim of finding steroid esters which show distinctly higher helical twisting power (HTP) than cholesteryl 3,4-di-(2-acryloyloxyethoxy)benzoate. Isothermal photopolymerization led to crosslinked networks. The HTPs of the networks were determined by measuring the reflection wavelengths and their dependence on the molar fraction of the chiral compound. The relationship between the HTP of the cholesteric polymeric networks and the molecular structure of the chiral steroid ester is discussed. A high HTP can be attributed to the definite alignment imposed by the large substituents on the long axis of the steroid nucleus.  相似文献

The four aldol condensation products of methylcyclohexanone isomers and 4-(4-hexyloxybenzoyloxy)benzaldehyde have been prepared. These chiral products were either obtained with high enantiomeric excess or the enantiomers were separated by means of chiral HPLC. In all cases only the E-isomer was obtained. UV irradiation was used to isomerize the E-isomers to the Z-isomers. Comparison of the helical twisting powers (HTP) of the E-isomers revealed that the derivative in which the methyl group is directly next to the double bond exhibits the highest value. Although the other three E-isomers have lower HTP values, they show large HTP changes and reversal of the helical twist sense upon irradiation. Of these compounds, the one derived from the commercially available (R)-3-methylcyclohexanone is an interesting candidate for use as an alternative to compounds derived from menthone for realizing photochemically induced twist changes in twisted nematic and cholesteric materials.  相似文献

The relationship between the helical twisting power (HTP) of cholesteric liquid crystals and the molecular structure of the chiral mesogens has been investigated. Rod-like mesogens are compared with analogues bearing a bulky lateral branch. Additionally, the HTP of induced cholesteric phases formed by chiral guest molecules in nematic host phases has been studied in terms of different molecular structures. The paper gives information on the influence of bulky lateral groups in mesogens on the HTP.  相似文献

A series of macrocyclic azobenzene-based chiral photoswitches have been judiciously designed, synthesized, and characterized. In the molecular structures, binaphthyl is covalently linked to ortho-positions of azobenzene, and four different substituents are linked to 6,6′-positions of binaphthyl. The photoswitches show enhanced helical twisting power (HTP) when doping in commercially available achiral liquid crystals to form self-organized helical superstructures, i.e., cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs). All the photoswitches exhibit reversible photoisomerization driven by visible light of different wavelengths in both organic solvent and liquid crystals. The photoswitches with shorter substituents enable handedness inversion of CLCs upon photoisomerization. These are the first examples of ortho-linked azobenzene-based photoswitches that enable handedness inversion in CLCs. The photoswitches with longer substituents display only HTP values decreasing while maintaining the same handedness.  相似文献

Photo-reorientation experiments have been performed on LB films of polyglutamates with azobenzene side chains and copolyglutamates with azobenzene moieties and non-photochromic mesogens as side chains. Incorporation of the non-photochromic phenylbenzoate and methyl-substituted biphenyl side chains prevents aggregation of the chromophores, but does not change the LB film structure. Photo-reorientation upon irradiation with polarized light is suppressed by the side-chain structure in the LB film, independent of chromophore aggregation. This structure is disrupted if the amount of side chains which can be photo-isomerized exceeds a critical number. After the structure has been disrupted, photo-reorientation is possible. Not only the chromophores, but also the non-photochromic side chains are reoriented in a cooperative manner.  相似文献

This paper describes characterization of molecular orientation for azobenzene moieties in a polymer nanosheet. Copolymers of N-[4-(phenylazo)phenyl] acrylamide (PAZoA) with tert-pentyl acrylamide (tPA) were synthesized and the monolayers deposited on tapered quartz waveguides by Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. Spectroscopic properties of the copolymer (p(tPA/PAZoA)) monolayers were monitored by integrated optical waveguide technique on the molecular level. Molecular orientation of the azobenzene was precisely determined by polarized absorption spectra. It was found that the azobenzene groups took a horizontal orientation and distributed uniformly in the p(tPA/PAZoA) monolayer without significant PAZoA aggregation. Photoisomerization process from trans to cis form was also investigated. More than half of the trans form (60–70%) was photoisomerized under unpolarized light irradiation, and the photoisomerization rate was independent on the PAZoA contents. This implies that the microenvironment of PAZoA moieties was almost the same in three different p(tPA/PAZoA) monolayers.  相似文献

The molecular structures of the chiral compounds 1-phenylethanol, 2-hexanol and 1-phenylethanol acetate have been studied theoretically by ab initio methods. Conformational analysis and electronic structure studies have been carried out with these molecules at STO-3G* and 6-31G* basis sets. For the study of the interaction of lipases with substrates, a simplified model of the tetrahedral intermediate has been calculated at the 6-31G*//4-31G* level. Molecular mechanics simulations of the interaction of these compounds with the lipases of Candida rugosa, Pseudomonas cepacia and Rhizomucor miehei have been used to study the enantioselectivity of these lipases in the transesterification reaction of the chiral alcohols. The theoretical results have been compared with experimental data and good agreement was observed. It can be concluded that the enantioselectivity of these lipases is controlled by the formation of a tetrahedral intermediate, whereas Michaelis complex formation has a much lower significance.  相似文献

A series of chiral Schiff base ligands 1–4, derived from (1R,2S)-(+)-cis-1-amino-2-indanol and other chiral amines with substituted salycilaldehydes were synthesized and transformed to the corresponding Cu(II) complexes. Molecular structures of six Cu(II) complexes were determined by X-ray crystallographic studies. The structures show the metal ion in a distorted square planar geometry with dimeric or monomeric structures, depending on the ligand denticity. The potential use of these complexes in asymmetric Cyclopropanation was explored.  相似文献

The stable bubble domains generated by mixing 10% of chiral molecules into an azobenzene liquid crystal (LC)-doped nematic host can be optically controlled by a violet laser beam (415 nm). The photon-induced reversible trans–cis photo-isomerisation of azobenzene changes the helical twisting power (HTP) of LC mixtures in which the HTP of cis-azobenzene LC is lower than trans-azobenzene LC. Under the irradiation of an optical field (>20 mW cm???2), the helical pitch distance, which is inverted proportional to the HTP, increases and the bubble domains disappear. Immediate obstruction of laser light irradiation initiates cholesteric nucleation, merging of domains and the subsequent generation of stably dispersed bubble domains.  相似文献

New chiral photochromic cholesteric comb-shaped acrylic copolymers and low molecular mass dopants containing azobenzene photosensitive fragments and chiral groups based on menthol and menthone were synthesized. For the copolymers and their mixtures with low molecular mass dopants, the phase behaviour and optical properties were studied. Under irradiation with UV and visible light, the untwisting of cholesteric helix takes place, and the selective light reflection maximum is shifted to the long wavelength spectral region. This shift is related to the E-Z isomerization of the azobenzene chiral groups. For the copolymers and mixtures of the cholesteric polymer with the menthyl-containing dopant, this process is thermally reversible. The specific features of the kinetics of the forward and the reverse thermal processes were characterized. It was demonstrated, that the copolymers and mixtures of the cholesteric copolymer with the menthyl-containing dopant may be used for coloured reversible recording of optical information. For such materials, their resistance with respect to the repeated 'recording-erasing' cycles was tested, and the fatigue resistance was shown to be rather high.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline (LC) properties of two series of non-symmetric dimesogenic compounds consisting of cholesterol and azobenzene-based moieties interconnected by ω-oxyalkanoyl spacers of varying length are compared: one series (AOC-n) has an octyloxy chain attached to the azobenzene mesogen unit while the other (AOCF-n) has a perfluoroheptylmethyloxy chain. In general, compounds bearing the fluorinated alkoxy chain exhibited LC properties over a much broader temperature range than those with the alkoxy chain. In addition, the AOC-n series exhibited the chiral smectic C (SmC*), smectic A (SmA) and cholesteric (N*) phases depending on the length of the central spacer, whereas the AOCF-n series favoured the formation of only the SmA phase with the N* phase completely suppressed. Both series showed an odd-even dependence of the isotropization temperature on spacer length.  相似文献

Trans-cis isomerization was investigated in a room temperature liquid crystal mixture of two azoxybenzene compounds. Experiments were performed on isolated molecules in dilute solutions and on the liquid crystal phase composed of the pure compounds. The absorption spectra of the trans and cis isomers were found to be similar to those of azobenzene compounds, as were the birefringence and order parameter of the nematic liquid crystal phase. The photo-optic properties were also similar in that irradiation by ultraviolet light caused the conversion from trans to cis isomers, while short wavelength visible light incident on these compounds resulted in the conversion from cis to trans isomers. The activation energy for thermal relaxation from the cis to trans isomer in the liquid crystal phase was determined to be (66±7) kJ/mole, which is less than for azobenzene in solution. While a photostationary state in a dilute solution with approximately equal numbers of trans and cis isomers was achieved, the nematic-isotropic transition of the mixture of the pure compounds decreased from 70°C to room temperature with a cis concentration of only about 12%. One unusual finding was that the photostationary concentration of trans and cis isomers due to irradiation with light of a specific visible wavelength depended on the starting concentrations of the two isomers, indicating that there may be a molecular conformation that is not photo-responsive and relaxes only thermally.  相似文献
