After it is shown that the classical five-point mesh-centered finite difference scheme can be derived from a low-order nodal finite element scheme by using nonstandard quadrature formulae, higher-order block mesh-centered finite difference schemes for second-order elliptic problems are derived from higher-order nodal finite elements with nonstandard quadrature formulae as before, combined to a procedure known as “transverse integration.” Numerical experiments with uniform and nonuniform meshes and different types of boundary conditions confirm the theoretical predictions, in discrete as well as continuous norms. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A low order anisotropic nonconforming rectangular finite element method for the convection-diffusion problem with a modified characteristic finite element scheme is studied in this paper. The O(h2) order error estimate in L2-norm with respect to the space, one order higher than the expanded characteristic-mixed finite element scheme with order O(h), and the same as the conforming case for a modified characteristic finite element scheme under regular meshes, is obtained by use of some distinct properties of the interpolation operator and the mean value technique, instead of the so-called elliptic projection, which is an indispensable tool in the convergence analysis of the previous literature. Lastly, some numerical results of the element are provided to verify our theoretical analysis.  相似文献

The error estimator proposed by Bank and Weiser is analyzed in the case of degree p finite element approximations on quadrilateral meshes. It is shown that the scheme is asymptotically exact in the energy norm for regular solutions provided that the degree of approximation is of odd order and the elements are rectangles. Perhaps surprisingly, the hypotheses are necessary, as counterexamples show. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Regular assumption of finite element meshes is a basic condition of most analysis offinite element approximations both for conventional conforming elements and nonconform-ing elements. The aim of this paper is to present a novel approach of dealing with theapproximation of a four-degree nonconforming finite element for the second order ellipticproblems on the anisotropic meshes. The optimal error estimates of energy norm and L~2-norm without the regular assumption or quasi-uniform assumption are obtained based onsome new special features of this element discovered herein.Numerical results are givento demonstrate validity of our theoretical analysis.  相似文献

Natural superconvergence of the least-squares finite element method is surveyed for the one-and two-dimensional Poisson equation. For two-dimensional problems, both the families of Lagrange elements and Raviart-Thomas elements have been considered on uniform triangular and rectangular meshes. Numerical experiments reveal that many superconvergence properties of the standard Galerkin method are preserved by the least-squares finite element method. Crouzeix-Raviart type finite elements on anisotropic meshes   总被引:47,自引:0,他引:47
Summary. The paper deals with a non-conforming finite element method on a class of anisotropic meshes. The Crouzeix-Raviart element is used on triangles and tetrahedra. For rectangles and prismatic (pentahedral) elements a novel set of trial functions is proposed. Anisotropic local interpolation error estimates are derived for all these types of element and for functions from classical and weighted Sobolev spaces. The consistency error is estimated for a general differential equation under weak regularity assumptions. As a particular application, an example is investigated where anisotropic finite element meshes are appropriate, namely the Poisson problem in domains with edges. A numerical test is described. A class of a posteriori estimators is studied for the error in the maximum-norm of the gradient on single elements when the finite element method is used to approximate solutions of second order elliptic problems. The meshes are unstructured and, in particular, it is not assumed that there are any known superconvergent points. The estimators are based on averaging operators which are approximate gradients, ``recovered gradients', which are then compared to the actual gradient of the approximation on each element. Conditions are given under which they are asympotically exact or equivalent estimators on each single element of the underlying meshes. Asymptotic exactness is accomplished by letting the approximate gradient operator average over domains that are large, in a controlled fashion to be detailed below, compared to the size of the elements.

Picard, Gauss–Seidel, and Jacobi monotone iterative methods are presented and analyzed for the adaptive finite element solution of semiconductor equations in terms of the Slotboom variables. The adaptive meshes are generated by the 1-irregular mesh refinement scheme. Based on these unstructured meshes and a corresponding modification of the Scharfetter–Gummel discretization scheme, it is shown that the resulting finite element stiffness matrix is an M-matrix which together with the Shockley–Read–Hall model for the generation–recombination rate leads to an existence–uniqueness–comparison theorem with simple upper and lower solutions as initial iterates. Numerical results of simulations on a MOSFET device model are given to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the adaptive and monotone properties of the present methods.  相似文献

This paper is mainly devoted to a comparative study of two iterative least-squares finite element schemes for solving the stationary incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with velocity boundary condition. Introducing vorticity as an additional unknown variable, we recast the Navier–Stokes problem into a first-order quasilinear velocity–vorticity–pressure system. Two Picard-type iterative least-squares finite element schemes are proposed to approximate the solution to the nonlinear first-order problem. In each iteration, we adopt the usual L 2 least-squares scheme or a weighted L 2 least-squares scheme to solve the corresponding Oseen problem and provide error estimates. We concentrate on two-dimensional model problems using continuous piecewise polynomial finite elements on uniform meshes for both iterative least-squares schemes. Numerical evidences show that the iterative L 2 least-squares scheme is somewhat suitable for low Reynolds number flow problems, whereas for flows with relatively higher Reynolds numbers the iterative weighted L 2 least-squares scheme seems to be better than the iterative L 2 least-squares scheme. Numerical simulations of the two-dimensional driven cavity flow are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the iterative least-squares finite element approach.  相似文献

In this article we address the problem of the existence of superconvergence points for finite element solutions of systems of linear elliptic equations. Our approach is quite different from all other studies of superconvergence. We prove that the existence of superconvergence points can be guaranteed by a numerical algorithm, which employs a finite number of operations (provided that there is no roundoff-error). By employing this approach, we can reproduce all known results on superconvergence of finite element solutions for linear elliptic problems and we can obtain many new results. Here, in particular, we address the problem of the superconvergence points for the gradient of finite element solutions of Laplace's and Poisson's equations and we show that the sets of superconvergence points are very different for these two cases. We also study the superconvergence of the components of the gradient of the displacement, the strain and stress for finite element solutions of the equations of elasticity. For Laplace's and Poisson's equations (resp. the equations of elasticity), we consider meshes of triangular as well as square elements of degree p, 1 ? p ? 7 (resp. 1 ? p ? 4). For the meshes of triangular elements we investigate the effect of the geometry of the mesh by considering four mesh patterns that typically occur in practical meshes, while in the case of square elements, we study the effect of the element type (tensor-product, serendipity, or other). © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A three-dimensional computational model of evaporative laser-cutting process has been developed using a finite element method. Steady heat transfer equation is used to model the laser-cutting process with a moving laser. The laser is assumed continuous wave Gaussian beam. The finite element surfaces on evaporation side are nonplanar and approximated by bilinear polynomial surfaces. Semi-infinite elements are introduced to approximate the semi-infinite domain. An iterative scheme is used to handle the geometric nonlinearity due to the unknown groove shape. The convergence studies are performed for various meshes. Numerical results about groove shapes and temperature distributions are presented and also compared with those by semi-analytical methods.  相似文献

Finite element modelling of hydrostatic compaction where the applied pressure acts normal to the deformed surface requires a geometric nonlinear formulation and follower load terms [1, 5, 7]. These concepts are applied to high order [6] (p-FEM) elements with hierarchic shape functions. Applying the blending function method allows to precisely describe curved boundaries on coarse meshes. High order elements exhibit good performance even for high aspect ratios and strong distortion and therefore allow an efficient discretization of thin-walled structures. Since high order finite elements are less prone to locking effects a pure displacement-based formulation can be chosen. After introducing the basic concept of the p-version the application of follower loads to geometrically nonlinear high order elements is presented. For the numerical solution the displacement based formulation is linearized yielding the basis for a Newton-Raphson iteration. The accuracy and performance of the high order finite element scheme is demonstrated by a numerical example. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

By employing $EQ_1^{rot}$ nonconforming finite element, the numerical approximation is presented for multi-term time-fractional mixed sub-diffusion and diffusion-wave equation on anisotropic meshes. Comparing with the multi-term time-fractional sub-diffusion equation or diffusion-wave equation, the mixed case contains a special time-space coupled derivative, which leads to many difficulties in numerical analysis. Firstly, a fully discrete scheme is established by using nonconforming finite element method (FEM) in spatial direction and L1 approximation coupled with Crank-Nicolson (L1-CN) scheme in temporal direction. Furthermore, the fully discrete scheme is proved to be unconditional stable. Besides, convergence and superclose results are derived by using the properties of $EQ_1^{rot}$ nonconforming finite element. What's more, the global superconvergence is obtained via the interpolation postprocessing technique. Finally, several numerical results are provided to demonstrate the theoretical analysis on anisotropic meshes.  相似文献

In this article, a new weak Galerkin mixed finite element method is introduced and analyzed for the Helmholtz equation with large wave numbers. The stability and well‐posedness of the method are established for any wave number k without mesh size constraint. Allowing the use of discontinuous approximating functions makes weak Galerkin mixed method highly flexible in term of little restrictions on approximations and meshes. In the weak Galerkin mixed finite element formulation, approximation functions can be piecewise polynomials with different degrees on different elements and meshes can consist elements with different shapes. Suboptimal order error estimates in both discrete H1 and L2 norms are established for the weak Galerkin mixed finite element solutions. Numerical examples are tested to support the theory.  相似文献

In this article, a new numerical scheme for a degenerate Keller–Segel model with heterogeneous anisotropic tensors is treated. It is well‐known that standard finite volume scheme not permit to handle anisotropic diffusion without any restrictions on meshes. Therefore, a combined finite volume‐nonconforming finite element scheme is introduced, developed, and studied. The unknowns of this scheme are the values at the center of cell edges. Convergence of the approximate solution to the continuous solution is proved only supposing the shape regularity condition for the primal mesh. This scheme ensures the validity of the discrete maximum principle under the classical condition that all transmissibilities coefficients are positive. Therefore, a nonlinear technique is presented, as a correction of the diffusive flux, to provide a monotone scheme for general tensors. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We consider Dirichlet boundary value problems for second order elliptic equations over polygonal domains. The coefficients of the equations under consideration degenerate at an inner point of the domain, or behave singularly in the neighborhood of that point. This behavior may cause singularities in the solution. The solvability of the problems is proved in weighted Sobolev spaces, and their approximation by finite elements is studied. This study includes regularity results, graded meshes, and inverse estimates. Applications of the theory to some problems appearing in quantum mechanics are given. Numerical results are provided which illustrate the theory and confirm the predicted rates of convergence of the finite element approximations for quasi-uniform meshes.
