This paper evaluates the efficiency of National Basketball Association (NBA) teams under a two-stage DEA framework. Applying the additive efficiency approach, we decompose overall team efficiency into first-stage wage efficiency and second-stage on-court efficiency and find out the individual endogenous weights for each stage. The empirical results show that NBA teams present a better performance on wage efficiency than for on-court efficiency, as on-court efficiency is influenced by many uncontrollable factors. Moreover, NBA teams, on average, tend to possess a higher weight on the first stage, suggesting that teams’ managers can enhance organizational efficiency more efficaciously by prudentially recruiting players.  相似文献

Wei and Chang (2011a) developed optimal system design (OSD) data envelopment analysis (DEA) models to design a decision-making unit (DMU)’s optimal system, in which the DMU could encounter the well-known economic phenomenon of budget congestion. To show how to verify the optimal budget and budget congestion, they develop a solution method. In this paper, we note that their method is incorrect for the OSD network DEA model in general. A new approach is developed to derive the DMU’s corresponding optimal budgets and to check for the existence of budget congestion not only for the OSD DEA models but also for the OSD network DEA models. In addition, the proposed approach is computationally economical. Finally, two numerical examples are used to illustrate the proposed approach.  相似文献

In this paper, a directional distance approach is proposed to deal with network DEA problems in which the processes may generate not only desirable final outputs but also undesirable outputs. The proposed approach is applied to the problem of modelling and benchmarking airport operations. The corresponding network DEA model considers two process (Aircraft Movement and Aircraft Loading) with two final outputs (Annual Passenger Movement and Annual Cargo handled), one intermediate product (Aircraft Traffic Movements) and two undesirable outputs (Number of Delayed Flights and Accumulated Flight Delays). The proposed approach has been applied to Spanish airports data for year 2008 comparing the computed directional distance efficiency scores with those obtained using a conventional, single-process directional distance function approach. From this comparison, it can be concluded that the proposed network DEA approach has more discriminatory power than its single-process counterpart, uncovering more inefficiencies and providing more valid results.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is commonly employed to evaluate the efficiency performance of a decision making unit (DMU) that transforms exogenous inputs into final outputs. In such a black-box DEA approach, details of an internal production process of the DMU are typically ignored and hence the locations of inefficiency are not adequately provided. In view of this, DEA researchers have recently developed various network approaches by looking into the black box, where the inputs that enter the box and the outputs that come out of it are only considered. However, most of these network approaches evaluate divisional efficiency by using an optimal solution of their respective optimization problem. If such an optimal solution is used in the case when there are multiple optima, then managerial guidance based on this solution alone may be inappropriate because more appropriate targets from the viewpoint of management may be ignored. Taking this fact into account, therefore, we propose a network approach for identifying the efficiency status of each DMU and its divisions. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method for measuring the efficiency of peer decision making units (DMUs), where the internal structures of DMUs are treated as a black-box. Recently DEA has been extended to examine the efficiency of DMUs that have two-stage network structures or processes, where all the outputs from the first stage are intermediate measures that make up the inputs to the second stage. The resulting two-stage DEA model not only provides an overall efficiency score for the entire process, but also yields an efficiency score for each of the individual stages. The current paper develops a Nash bargaining game model to measure the performance of DMUs that have a two-stage structure. Under Nash bargaining theory, the two stages are viewed as players and the DEA efficiency model is a cooperative game model. It is shown that when only one intermediate measure exists between the two stages, our newly developed Nash bargaining game approach yields the same results as applying the standard DEA approach to each stage separately. Two real world data sets are used to demonstrate our bargaining game model.  相似文献

One of the most complicated decision making problems for managers is the evaluation of supply chain (SC) performance which involves various criteria. Though vast studies have been recorded on supply chain efficiency evaluation via balanced scorecard (BSC) approach, these studies do not focus on the relationships between the four perspectives of BSC approach. The present paper is an attempt focusing on these relationships, especially the returnable ones. To do so, at first, all relationships between the four perspectives of BSC were determined and then the DEMATEL approach was employed to obtain a network structure. This network structure was then used to create a network DEA model. Since it was not possible to calculate the efficiency evaluation score by BSC, the data envelopment analysis (DEA) model was used for such an evaluation. Moreover, after reviewing different tools to evaluate the performance of supply chain, a new approach, relying on network DEA with BSC approach, was generated. Finally, this model was applied in the Iranian food industry to evaluate its supply chains efficiency and the results proved the high efficiency of the model designed. The findings could be used in various evaluation processes in different industries.  相似文献

This article presents a novel model for evaluating the performance of field players in football. Based upon Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), we employ a non-concave metafrontier approach that permits estimation of players’ efficiency scores under consideration of their playing positions. The model is applied to a data set of Germany’s premier league football players covering the playing seasons 2002/03 to 2008/09. The results reveal a clear positive relationship between a team’s average player efficiency score and its rank in the league table at the end of the season. In addition, the metafrontier approach is used to identify a footballer’s optimal playing position in the team and to quantify the performance increase from moving to that position.  相似文献

Network data envelopment analysis (DEA) models the internal structures of decision-making units (DMUs). Unlike the standard DEA model, multiplier-based network DEA models are often highly non-linear and cannot be converted into linear programs. As such, obtaining a non-linear network DEA's global optimal solution is a challenge because it corresponds to a nonconvex optimization problem. In this paper, we introduce a conic relaxation model that searches for the global optimum to the general multiplier-based network DEA model. We reformulate the general network DEA models and relax the new models into second order cone programming (SOCP) problems. In comparison with linear relaxation models, which is potentially applicable to general network DEA structures, the conic relaxation model guarantees applicability in general network DEA, since McCormick envelopes involved are ensured to be finite. Furthermore, the conic relaxation model avoids unnecessary linear relaxations of some nonlinear constraints. It generates, in a more convenient manner, feasible approximations and tighter upper bounds on the global optimal overall efficiency. Compared with a line-parameter search method that has been applied to solve non-linear network DEA models, the conic relaxation model keeps track of the distances between the optimal overall efficiency and its approximations. As a result, it is able to determine whether a qualified approximation has been achieved or not, with the help of a branch and bound algorithm. Hence, our proposed approach can substantially reduce the computations involved.  相似文献

In a rapidly evolving economic world, projects become tools to support organization goals. Project portfolio is set of all projects that are implemented in the organisation at a time. Possible projects are characterized by sets of inputs and outputs, where inputs are resources for project realisation and outputs measure multiple goals of the organisation. The data envelopment analysis (DEA) is an appropriate approach to select efficient projects. The organisation has its total resources in limited quantities. Designing a portfolio of efficient projects not exceeding the limited resources does not always lead to the most efficient portfolio. De Novo optimisation is an approach for designing optimal systems by reshaping the feasible set. The paper proposes a new approach for project portfolio designing based on a systemic combination of DEA model and De Novo optimisation approach. A total available budget is a restriction on project portfolio. The proposed concept provides designing of optimal project portfolio with the minimal budget. Performance measures of the designed project portfolio are the efficiency of the portfolio and the effectiveness of outputs. Possible extensions of the concept are formulated and discussed.  相似文献

In many managerial applications, situations frequently occur when a fixed cost is used in constructing the common platform of an organization, and needs to be shared by all related entities, or decision making units (DMUs). It is of vital importance to allocate such a cost across DMUs where there is competition for resources. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been successfully used in cost and resource allocation problems. Whether it is a cost or resource allocation issue, one needs to consider both the competitive and cooperative situation existing among DMUs in addition to maintaining or improving efficiency. The current paper uses the cross-efficiency concept in DEA to approach cost and resource allocation problems. Because DEA cross-efficiency uses the concept of peer appraisal, it is a very reasonable and appropriate mechanism for allocating a shared resource/cost. It is shown that our proposed iterative approach is always feasible, and ensures that all DMUs become efficient after the fixed cost is allocated as an additional input measure. The cross-efficiency DEA-based iterative method is further extended into a resource-allocation setting to achieve maximization in the aggregated output change by distributing available resources. Such allocations for fixed costs and resources are more acceptable to the players involved, because the allocation results are jointly determined by all DMUs rather than a specific one. The proposed approaches are demonstrated using an existing data set that has been applied in similar studies.  相似文献

本文给出了一种供应链网络协调程度的评价方法。研究思路是:首先,关联网络DEA能求出供应链网络上各个决策单元的DEA效率。其次,假设供应链网络实现了协调,那么网络上所有企业的DEA效率应该都为1。因此可以用供应链网络的实际DEA效率与协调状态(即所有决策单元DEA效率均为1)的差距,来评价供应链网络的协调程度。基于这一思路,本文研究了一个由3个供应商、2个制造商和3个零售商组成的供应链网络的协调评价问题,构建了基于关联网络DEA的类方差协调评价模型,实现了对供应链效率和协调性的同时测量,并通过数值算例验证了方法的实用性和有效性。  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is popularly used to evaluate relative efficiency among public or private firms. Most DEA models are established by individually maximizing each firm's efficiency according to its advantageous expectation by a ratio. Some scholars have pointed out the interesting relationship between the multiobjective linear programming (MOLP) problem and the DEA problem. They also introduced the common weight approach to DEA based on MOLP. This paper proposes a new linear programming problem for computing the efficiency of a decision-making unit (DMU). The proposed model differs from traditional and existing multiobjective DEA models in that its objective function is the difference between inputs and outputs instead of the outputs/inputs ratio. Then an MOLP problem, based on the introduced linear programming problem, is formulated for the computation of common weights for all DMUs. To be precise, the modified Chebychev distance and the ideal point of MOLP are used to generate common weights. The dual problem of this model is also investigated. Finally, this study presents an actual case study analysing R&D efficiency of 10 TFT-LCD companies in Taiwan to illustrate this new approach. Our model demonstrates better performance than the traditional DEA model as well as some of the most important existing multiobjective DEA models.  相似文献

The specific home/away sequencing of games has been a point of contention in the championship series of professional sports leagues. This research analyses data from the National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals in developing a logistic-regression model to predict the outcome of games that takes into consideration several factors, including home-court advantage and game-to-game momentum. It is found that negative serial correlation exists such that the team that wins one game is more likely to lose the next game of the series. This model is then used to predict the probability of each team winning each of the games within the series, and these probabilities are combined to evaluate alternative playoff formats. It is found that different formats are appropriate depending on the nature of momentum, and that the format used by the NBA may minimize travel requirements, but other formats may perform better in extending the length of the series.  相似文献

There is an urgent need in a wide range of fields such as logistics and supply chain management to develop effective approaches to measure and/or optimally design a network system comprised of a set of units. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) researchers have been developing network DEA models to measure decision making units’ (DMUs’) network systems. However, to our knowledge, there are no previous contributions on the DEA-type models that help DMUs optimally design their network systems. The need to design optimal systems is quite common and is sometimes necessary in practice. This research thus introduces a new type of DEA model termed the optimal system design (OSD) network DEA model to optimally design a DMUs (exogenous and endogenous) input and (endogenous and final) output portfolios in terms of profit maximization given the DMUs total available budget. The resulting optimal network design through the proposed OSD network DEA models is efficient, that is, it lies on the frontier of the corresponding production possibility set.  相似文献

Network data envelopment analysis (DEA) concerns using the DEA technique to measure the relative efficiency of a system, taking into account its internal structure. The results are more meaningful and informative than those obtained from the conventional black-box approach, where the operations of the component processes are ignored. This paper reviews studies on network DEA by examining the models used and the structures of the network system of the problem being studied. Detailed time series analysis of a soccer match is given based on the detailed data of the 2D motions of all 22 players and of the ball for the match. The whole analysis includes two parts. In Part I, the individual and collective behaviors of the players of the two teams as well as the motion of the ball are presented as various time series. Geometrical centers, radii, expansion speeds, possession functions of the two teams are defined and calculated as functions of time. Major ranges of all players as well as of different groups of players (defenders, midfielders, forwards) of the two teams during the entire first half, the attacking phase of team A and the attacking phase of team B are calculated, respectively, showing the structures of the two teams during different phases. Distance coverage of each player and the mean distances covered by different groups of players (defenders, midfielders, forwards) during different phases are calculated. The time portions of possession of the ball by each team and the time portions of different phases are also calculated. In Part II, energy and spectral analysis and various correlations will be derived. The relation between various parameters and potential indicators will be discussed. The major purpose of the present study is to offer some general mathematical tools for the detailed analysis and to reveal some general features of soccer match when the detailed 2D data are available. The results would offer the raw materials for various potential indicators which may eventually be used in the coaching process to enhance the performance and in the prediction of the results of soccer matches.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) performance evaluation can be implemented from either optimistic or pessimistic perspectives. For an overall performance evaluation from both perspectives, bounded DEA models are introduced to evaluate decision making units (DMUs) in terms of interval efficiencies. This paper reveals unreachability of efficiency and distortion of frontiers associated with the existing bounded DEA models. New bounded DEA models against these problems are proposed by integrating the archetypal optimistic and pessimistic DEA models into a model with bounded efficiency. It provides a new way of deriving empirical estimates of efficiency frontiers in tune with that identified by the archetypal models. Without distortion of frontiers, all DMUs reach interval efficiencies in accordance with that determined by the archetypal models. A unified evaluation and classification result is derived and the efficiency relationships between DMUs are preserved. It is shown that the newly proposed models are more reliable for overall performance evaluation in practice, as illustrated empirically by two examples.  相似文献
