The problem of pulsating flow superimposed on the steady laminar flow in a circular tube is investigated for the fluid characterized by the Oldroyd's constitutive equations. The governing equations are solved in an exact manner and the solution is obtained in terms of two non-dimensional fluid parameters. Several interesting illustrations are provided comparing the behaviour of Newtonian fluid and Oldroyd fluids regarding the velocity field, sectional mean velocity, surface friction and balance of force. The flow for small and large frequencies of vibration are obtained as special cases. For Oldroyd fluids also the flow is basically parabolic for small frequencies while it possesses a boundary layer character at large frequencies. The solution for second order fluids and Maxwell fluids can be obtained by appropriately choosing the two fluid parameters.

The non-Newtonian effect in the boundary layer flow over a horizontal elliptical cylinder is investigated numerically. A modified power-law viscosity model is used to correlate the non-Newtonian characteristics of the fluid flow. For natural convectionflows, the surface of the cylinder is maintained by the uniform surface temperature(UST)or the uniform heat flux(UHF) condition. The governing equations corresponding to theflow are first transformed into a dimensionless non-similar form using suitable transformations. The resulting equations are solved numerically by an efficient finite difference scheme. The numerical results are presented for the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number with the eccentric angle for different values of the power-law index n. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to be higher and lower, respectively, for the shear thickening fluids(n > 1) than the other fluids(n≤1).The effects of different elliptical configurations on the average Nusselt number are also presented and discussed for both conditions of the surface temperature.

Nonlinear vibrations that occur in such bundle structures caused collisions between tubes and cross flows of the surrounding fluid. This paper presents modeling techniques for simulating the FSI dynamics of bundle tubes vibrating and colliding in fluids. A typical configuration of a three-dimensional tube bundles submerged in fluid of a cylindrical container is studied. Coupling conditions of displacement, velocity and forces are considered on the fluid-structure coupling interfaces. Contacts boundary between tubes and topological domain changes of the fluid are also considered on the fluid-structure coupling interface. Modeling techniques and algorithm are then established for flow-induced vibrations of the tubes, and collisions between tubes in fluids. The examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. It has confirmed that our code produces the correct physics of the FSI problem, and capable of revealing the complex nonlinear mechanism with solid-solid contacts together with fluid-solid interactions.

Summary The modification of the axisymmetric viscous flow due to relative rotation of the disk or fluid by a translation of the boundary is studied. The fluid is taken to be compressible, and the relative rotation and translation velocity of the disk or fluid are time-dependent. The nonlinear partial differential equations governing the motion are solved numerically using an implicit finite difference scheme and Newton's linearisation technique. Numerical solutions are obtained at various non-dimensional times and disk temperatures. The non-symmetric part of the flow (secondary flow) describing the translation effect generates a velocity field at each plane parallel to the disk. The cartesian components of velocity due to secondary flow exhibit oscillations when the motion is due to rotation of the fluid on a translating disk. Increase in translation velocity produces an increment in the radial skin friction but reduces the tangential skin friction.

The MHD Couette flow of two immiscible fluids in a parallel plate channel in the presence of an applied electric and inclined magnetic field is investigated in the paper. One of the fluids is assumed to be electrically conducting, while the other fluid and the channel plates are assumed to be electrically insulating. Separate solutions with appropriate boundary conditions for each fluid are obtained and these solutions are matched at the interface using suitable matching conditions. The partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer are transformed to ordinary differential equations and closed-form solutions are obtained in both fluid regions of the channel. The results for various values of the Hartmann number, the angle of magnetic field inclination, the loading parameter and the ratio of the heights of the fluids are presented graphically to show their effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics.

The mixed convection flow and heat transfer from an exponentially stretching vertical surface in a quiescent fluid is analyzed using similarity solution technique. Wall temperature and stretching velocity are assumed to have specific exponential function forms. The influence of buoyancy along with viscous dissipation on the convective transport in the boundary layer region is analyzed in both aiding and opposing flow situations. The flow is governed by the mixed convection parameter Gr/Re2. The velocity and temperature inside the boundary layer are observed to be influenced by the parameters like Prandtl number Pr, Gebhart number Gb. Significant changes are observed in non-dimensional skin friction and heat transfer coefficients due to viscous dissipation in the medium. The flow and temperature distributions inside the boundary layer are analyzed and the results for non-dimensional skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are discussed through computer generated plots.

This study presents an analysis of the axisymmetric flow of a non-Newtonian fluid over a radially stretching sheet. The momentum equations for two-dimensional flow are first modeled for Sisko fluid constitutive model, which is a combination of power-law and Newtonian fluids. The general momentum equations are then simplified by invoking the boundary layer analysis. Then a non-linear ordinary differential equation governing the axisymmetric boundary layer flow of Sisko fluid over a radially stretching sheet is obtained by introducing new suitable similarity transformations. The resulting non-linear ordinary differential equation is solved analytically via the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Closed form exact solution is then also obtained for the cases n=0 and 1. Analytical results are presented for the velocity profiles for some values of governing parameters such as power-law index, material parameter and stretching parameter. In addition, the local skin friction coefficient for several sets of the values of physical parameter is tabulated and analyzed. It is shown that the results presented in this study for the axisymmetric flow over a radially non-linear stretching sheet of Sisko fluid are quite general so that the corresponding results for the Newtonian fluid and the power-law fluid can be obtained as two limiting cases.

Sufficient conditions are found for the existence of similar solutions of the mixed convection flow of a Powell-Eyring fluid over a nonlinear stretching permeable sur- face in the presence of magnetic field. To achieve this, one parameter linear group trans- formation is applied. The governing momentum and energy equations are transformed to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by use of a similarity transformation. These equations are solved by the homotopy analysis method (HAM) to obtain the approximate solutions. The effects of magnetic field, suction, and buoyancy on the Powell-Eyring fluid flow with heat transfer inside the boundary layer are analyzed. The effects of the non- Newtonian fluid (Powell-Eyring model) parameters ε and δon the skin friction and local heat transfer coefficients for the cases of aiding and opposite flows are investigated and discussed. It is observed that the momentum boundary layer thickness increases and the thermal boundary layer thickness decreases with the increase in ε whereas the momentum boundary layer thickness decreases and thermal boundary layer thickness increases with the increase in δ for both the aiding and opposing mixed convection flows.

The problem of the steady flow of three classes of non-linear fluids of the differential type past a porous plate with uniform suction or injection is studied. The flow which is studied is the counterpart of the classical ‘asymptotic suction’ problem, within the context of the non-Newtonian fluid models. The non-linear differential equations resulting from the balance of momentum and mass, coupled with suitable boundary conditions, are solved numerically either by a finite difference method or by a collocation method with a B-spline function basis. The manner in which the various material parameters affect the structure of the boundary layer is delineated. The issue of paucity of boundary conditions for general non-linear fluids of the differential type, and a method for augmenting the boundary conditions for a certain class of flow problems, is illustrated. A comparison is made of the numerical solutions with the solutions from a regular perturbation approach, as well as a singular perturbation.

Two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of viscoelastic fluids is studied theoretically assuming that the fluid obeys the upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) model. Boundary-layer theory is used to simplify the equations of motion which are further reduced to a single non-linear third-order ODE using the concept of stream function coupled with the technique of the similarity solution. The equation so obtained was solved using Chebyshev pseudo-spectral collocation-point method. Based on the results obtained in the present work, it is concluded that the well-established but controversial prediction that in stagnation-point flows of viscoelastic fluids the velocity inside the boundary layer may exceed that outside the layer may just be an artifact of the rheological model used in previous studies (namely, the second-grade model). No such peculiarity is predicted to exist for the Maxwell model. For a UCM fluid, a thickening of the boundary layer and a drop in wall skin friction coefficient is predicted to occur the higher the elasticity number. These predictions are in direct contradiction with those reported in the literature for a second-grade fluid.

This paper is concerned with stationary non-Newtonian fluid in an unbounded domain which geometrically is channel-like in two dimensions or axisymmetric pipe-like in three. The flow satisfies no-slip boundary conditions, and behaves as Poiseuille flow at infinity. Existence and uniqueness are proved under the assumption of a large kinematic viscosity. The results apply to a family of models including second-order, Maxwell and Oldroyd-B fluids. For second-order fluids, the existence and uniqueness results are extended to the case when the boundary has corner points.

We study the Navier–Stokes equations for incompressible fluids in a three-dimensional thin two-layer domain whose top, bottom and interface boundaries are not flat. In addition to the Navier friction boundary conditions on the top and bottom boundaries of the domain, and the periodicity condition on the sides, the fluid velocities are subject to an interface boundary condition which relates the normal stress of each fluid to the relative velocity between them on the common boundary. We prove that the strong solutions exist for all time if the initial data and body force, measured in relevant norms, are appropriately large as the domain becomes very thin. In our analysis, the interface boundary condition is interpreted as a variation of the Navier boundary conditions containing an interaction part. The effect of that interaction on the Stokes operator and the nonlinear term of the Navier–Stokes equations is expressed and carefully estimated in different ways in order to obtain suitable inequalities.

We propose a new formulation for weakly imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions in non-Newtonian fluid flow. It is based on the Gerstenberger–Wall formulation for Newtonian fluids [1], but extended to non-Newtonian fluids. It uses a stabilization term in the weak form that is independent from the actual fluid model used, except for an adjustable parameter κ, having the physical dimension of a viscosity. The new formulation is tested, combined with an extended finite element method, for the flow past a cylinder between two walls using both a generalized Newtonian and a viscoelastic fluid. It is shown that the convergence is optimal for the generalized Newtonian fluid by comparing with a converged boundary-fitted solution using traditional strong boundary conditions. Also the solution of the viscoelastic fluid compares very well with a traditional solution using a boundary-fitted mesh and strong Dirichlet boundary conditions. For both fluid models we also test various values of the κ parameter and it turns out that a value equal to the zero-shear-viscosity gives good results. But, it is also shown that a wide range of κ values can be chosen without sacrificing accuracy.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis for laminar boundary layer flow in a power law non-Newtonian fluids. The Adomian analytical decomposition technique is presented and an approximate analytical solution is obtained. The approximate analytical solution can be expressed in terms of a rapid convergent power series with easily computable terms.Reliability and efficiency of the approximate solution are verified by comparing with numerical solutions in the literature. Moreover, the approximate solution can be successfully applied to provide values for the skin friction coefficient of the laminar boundary layer flow in power law non-Newtonian fluids.

This paper deals with the rotational flow of a generalized second grade fluid, within a circular cylinder, due to a torsional shear stress. The fractional calculus approach in the constitutive relationship model of a second grade fluid is introduced. The velocity field and the resulting shear stress are determined by means of the Laplace and finite Hankel transforms to satisfy all imposed initial and boundary conditions. The solutions corresponding to second grade fluids as well as those for Newtonian fluids are obtained as limiting cases of our general solutions. The influence of the fractional coefficient on the velocity of the fluid is also analyzed by graphical illustrations.

The laminar boundary layer flow induced in a quiescent visco-elastic fluid by a permeable stretched flat surface with non-linearly (quadratic) velocity and appropriate wall transpiration under the influence of a magnetic field is investigated. It is shown that the problem permits a complete analytic exponentially decaying solution for the set of continuity and momentum equations with both magnetic field and visco-elasticity influences for two classes of visco-elastic fluid, namely, the second grade and Walters’ liquid B fluids. The effects on both the skin friction parameter α and velocity profiles of various physical parameters such as visco-elasticity, suction/blowing parameter and magnetic parameter are studied. The results for the velocity field are presented through graphs and discussed in detail.

Approximate solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are derived through the Laplace transform for two dimensional, incompressible, elastico-viscous flow past a flat porous plate. The flow is assumed to be independent of the distance parallel to the plate. General formulae for the velocity distribution, skin friction and displacement thickness as functions of the given free stream velocity and suction velocity are obtained. The response of skin friction to the impulsive perturbations in the stream and suction velocities is studied. It is found that the order of singularity in the skin friction at t=0 increases due to the elastic property of the fluid in the impulsive case. When the stream is accelerated the skin friction still anticipates the velocity but the time of anticipation is reduced from 1/4 to (1/4) (1—k), where k is the elastic parameter of the fluid. It is found that in general the resistance of the elastico-viscous fluids to an impulsive increase in the stream velocity is greater than the viscous fluids, the elasticoviscous fluids also reach the steady state earlier than the viscous fluids.
