Nonsimilarity solutions for non-Darcy mixed convection from a vertical impermeable surface embedded in a saturated porous medium are presented for variable surface heat flux (VHF) of the power-law form. The entire mixed convection region is divided into two regimes. One region covers the forced convection dominated regime and the other one covers the natural convection dominated regime. The governing equations are first transformed into a dimensionless form by the nonsimilar transformation and then solved by a finite-difference scheme. Computations are based on Keller Box method and a tolerance of iteration of 10−5 as a criterion for convergence. Three physical aspects are introduced. One measures the strength of mixed convection where the dimensionless parameter Ra* x /Pe3/2 x characterizes the effect of buoyancy forces on the forced convection; while the parameter Pe x /Ra*2/3 x characterizes the effect of forced flow on the natural convection. The second aspect represents the effect of the inertial resistance where the parameter KU /ν is found to characterize the effect of inertial force in the forced convection dominated regime, while the parameter (KU /ν)(Ra*2/3 x /Pe x ) characterizes the effect of inertial force in the natural convection dominated regime. The third aspect is the effect of the heating condition at the wall on the mixed convection, which is presented by m, the power index of the power-law form heating condition. Numerical results for both heating conditions are carried out. Distributions of dimensionless temperature and velocity profiles for both Darcy and non-Darcy models are presented. The problem of steady, laminar, hydromagnetic simultaneous heat and mass transfer by mixed convection flow over a vertical plate embedded in a uniform porous medium with a stratified free stream and taking into account the presence of thermal dispersion is investigated for the case of power-law variations of both the wall temperature and concentration. Certain transformations are employed to transform the governing differential equations to a local similarity form. The transformed equations are solved numerically by an efficient implicit, iterative, finite-difference scheme. The obtained results are checked against previously published work on special cases of the problem and are found to be in excellent agreement. A parametric study illustrating the influence of the magnetic field, porous medium inertia effects, heat generation or absorption, lateral wall mass flux, concentration to thermal buoyancy ratio, and the Lewis number on the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration as well as the Nusselt and the Sherwood numbers is conducted. The results of this parametric study is shown graphically and the physical aspects of the problem are discussed. Received on 17 November 1998  相似文献

The problem of subcooled forced convection film boiling on a vertical flat plate embedded in a porous medium was attacked exploiting similarity transformations on the governing equations and boundary conditions in both vapor and liquid layers. Similarity solutions were obtained to investigate the effects of the vapor super-heating and liquid subcooling. The heat transfer groupingNu x /Ra x 1/2 is expressed in terms of a function of three parameters associated with the degree of liquid subcooling (Sub), the degree of vapor superheating (Sup) and the vapor buoyancy effect relative to the liquid forced convection effect (R). It is found that the level ofNu x /Ra x 1/2 increases asSup orR decreases and asSub increases. Furthermore, asymptotic expressions were reduced considering the physical limiting conditions, namely, thin and thick vapor films.  相似文献

Unsteady laminar mixed convection flow (combined free and forced convection flow) along a vertical slender cylinder embedded in a porous medium under the combined buoyancy effect of thermal and species diffusion has been studied. The effect of the permeability of the medium as well as the magnetic field has been included in the analysis. The partial differential equations with three independent variables governing the flow have been solved numerically using a implicit finite difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique. Computations have been carried out for accelerating, decelerating and oscillatory free stream velocity distributions. The effects of the permeability of the medium, buoyancy forces, transverse curvature and magnetic field on skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer have been studied. It is found that the effect of free stream velocity distribution is more pronounced on the skin friction than on the heat and mass transfer. The permeability and magnetic parameters increase the skin friction, but reduce the heat and mass transfer. The skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer are enhanced due to the buoyancy forces and curvature parameter. The heat transfer is strongly dependent on the viscous dissipation parameter and the Prandtl number, and the mass transfer on the Schmidt number.  相似文献

Numerical methods are used to investigate the transient, forced convection heat/mass transfer from a finite flat plate to a steady stream of viscous, incompressible fluid. The temperature/concentration inside the plate is considered uniform. The heat/mass balance equations were solved in elliptic cylindrical coordinates by a finite difference implicit ADI method. These solutions span the parameter ranges 10 Re 400 and 0.1 Pr 10. The computations were focused on the influence of the product (aspect ratio) × (volume heat capacity ratio/Henry number) on the heat/mass transfer rate. The occurrence on the plates surface of heat/mass wake phenomena was also studied.  相似文献

The diffusion‐thermo and thermal‐diffusion effects on heat and mass transfer by mixed convection boundary layer flow over a vertical isothermal permeable surface embedded in a porous medium were studied numerically in the presence of chemical reaction with temperature‐dependent viscosity. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into a set of coupled ordinary differential equations, which are solved numerically by using Runge–Kutta method with shooting technique. Numerical results are obtained for the velocity, temperature and concentration distributions, and the local skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number for several values of the parameters, namely, the variable viscosity parameter, suction/injection parameter, Darcy number, chemical reaction parameter, and Dufour and Soret numbers. The obtained results are presented graphically and in tabulated form, and the physical aspects of the problem are discussed. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effect of lateral mass flux on mixed convection heat and mass transfer in a saturated porous medium adjacent to an inclined permeable surface is analyzed. A similarity solution is obtained when surface temperature and concentration, free stream velocity and injection/suction velocity of fluid are prescribed as power functions of distance from the leading edge. The cases when the flow and buoyancy forces are in the same and opposite directions are discussed both for aiding and opposing buoyancy effects. The governing parameters are the mixed convection parameter Gr, the Lewis number Le, the buoyancy ratio N, the lateral mass flux parameter f w, representing the effects of injection or withdrawal of fluid at the wall, and λ which specifies three cases of the inclined plate. The interactive effect of these parameters on heat and mass transfer rates are presented. It is observed that the diffusion ratio (Le) has a more pronounced effect on concentration field than on flow and temperature fields. It is found that the rates of heat and mass transfer increase with suction and decrease with injection of the fluid. Received on 31 August 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献

The present paper is concerned with the study of radiation effects on the combined (forced-free) convection flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid over a vertical surface embedded in a fluid saturated porous medium of variable porosity with heat generation or absorption. The effects of radiation heat transfer from a porous wall on convection flow are very important in high temperature processes. The inclusion of radiation effects in the energy equation leads to a highly non-linear partial differential equations which are transformed to a system of ordinary differential equations using non-similarity transformation. These equations are then solved numerically using implicit finite-difference method subject to appropriate boundary and matching conditions. A parametric study of the physical parameters such as the particle diameter-based Reynolds number, the flow based Reynolds number, the Grashof number, the heat generation or absorption co-efficient and radiation parameter is conducted on temperature distribution. The effects of radiation and other physical parameters on the local skin friction and on local Nusselt number are shown graphically. It is interesting to observe that the momentum and thermal boundary layer thickness increases with the radiation and decrease with increase in the Prandtl number.  相似文献

Coupled heat transfer between laminar forced convection along and conduction inside a flat plate wall is theoretically studied. The laminar convective boundary layer is analyzed by employing the integral technique. The energy equations for the fluid and the plate wall are combined under the condition of the continuity in the temperature and heat flux at the fluid-solid interface. The analysis results in a simple formal solution. Expressions have been obtained for calculating local Nusselt number, wall heat flux and temperature along the plate, all are functions of the local Brun number, Br x , which is a measure of the ratio of the thermal resistance of the plate to that of the convective boundary layer. The results indicate that for Br x ≥0.15, neglecting the plate resistance will results in an error of more than 5% in Nusselt number. Comparison of the present solution with other previous studies has been made. The solution may be of a considerable theoretical and practical interest. Received on 19 August 1998  相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to analyze the natural convection heat and mass transfer of nanofluids over a vertical plate embedded in a saturated Darcy porous medium subjected to surface heat and nanoparticle fluxes. To carry out the numerical solution, two steps are performed. The governing partial differential equations are firstly simplified into a set of highly coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations by appropriate similarity variables, and then numerically solved by the finite difference method. The obtained similarity solution depends on four non-dimensional parameters, i.e., the Brownian motion parameter (N b), the Buoyancy ratio (N r), the thermophoresis parameter (N t), and the Lewis number (Le). The variations of the reduced Nusselt number and the reduced Sherwood number with N b and N t for various values of Le and N r are discussed in detail. Simulation results depict that the increase in N b, N t, or N r decreases the reduced Nusselt number. An increase in the Lewis number increases both of the reduced Nusselt number and the Sherwood number. The results also reveal that the nanoparticle concentration boundary layer thickness is much thinner than those of the thermal and hydrodynamic boundary layers.  相似文献

A detailed numerical study has been performed to investigate transient natural convection heat and mass transfer in a porous enclosure. Major dimensionless groups governing the present problem areRa,N,Le, φ andAr. Results are particular presented to illustrate the effects of the combined thermal and solutal buoyancy forces on the temporal evolution of local/average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. The results show that with the increase in the Rayleigh number, the heat and mass transfer is enhanced as a result of greater buoyancy effect. Additionally, the increase in buoyancy ratioN results in an improvement in the heat and mass transfer rates and in the mean time causes a short time duration for the flow to approach the steady-state condition.  相似文献

In this paper we present a numerical solution for stationary simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the laminar boundary layer on a vertical flat plate. The theory is based on a simple physical model that treats the two buoyancy effects (originating from temperature and concentration differences) as mutually independant and additional forces. Results are given for the case of Pr=0.71, Sc=0.63 and equally directed body forces. Our experimental data for the same conditions show close agreement and these seems to be no need for a more complicated theory.  相似文献

This paper examined the hydromagnetic mixed convection stagnation point flow towards a vertical plate embedded in a highly porous medium with radiation and internal heat generation. The governing boundary layer equations are formulated and transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations using a local similarity approach and then solved numerically by shooting iteration technique together with Runge-Kutta sixth-order integration scheme. A representative set of numerical results are displayed graphically and discussed quantitatively to show some interesting aspects of the pertinent parameters on the dimensionless axial velocity, temperature and the concentration profiles, local skin friction, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number, the rate of heat and mass transfer. Good agreement is found between the numerical results of the present paper with the earlier published works under some special cases.  相似文献

An integral treatment was proposed for analysis of non-Darcy free convection over a vertical flat plate and cone within a fluid-saturated porous medium. A flexible one-parameter family of third order polynomials was employed to cope with vast changes in the velocity and temperature profiles encountered in the Darcy flow limit through to the Forchheimer flow limit. Zero curvature requirement for the temperature profile at the wall was exploited as an auxiliary relation to determine the shape parameter. Comparison of the approximate results with the exact solution reveals a high performance of the present integral procedure for heat transfer rat prediction.  相似文献

In order to investigate how simultaneous heat and mass transfer by free convection interact, some numerical theoretical results are presented and discussed. The total flow rate appears to be an essential element in obtaining some insight into this interaction.  相似文献

The free convection flow along a vertical porous plate with transverse sinusoidal suction velocity distribution is investigated. Due to this type of suction velocity at the plate the flow becomes three dimensional one. For the asymptotic flow condition, the wall shear stress in the direction of main flow for different values of buoyancy parameter G is obtained. For G=0, the skin friction in the direction of free stream and the rate of heat transfer from the plate to the fluid are given. It is found that these results differ from those obtained by Gersten and Gross.  相似文献

The non-darcy mixed convection flows from heated vertical and horizontal plates in saturated porous media have been considered using boundary layer approximations. The flows are considered to be driven by multiple buoyancy forces. The similarity solutions for both vertical and horizontal plates have been obtained. The governing equations have been solved numerically using a shooting method. The heat transfer, mass transfer and skin friction are reduced due to inertial forces. Also, they increase with the buoyancy parameter for aiding flow and decrease for the opposing flow. For aiding flow, the heat and mass transfer coefficients are found to approach asymptotically the forced or free convection values as the buoyancy parameter approaches zero or infinity.  相似文献
