A method of constructing test problems with known global solution for a class of reverse convex programs or linear programs with an additional reverse convex constraint is presented. The initial polyhedron is assumed to be a hypercube. The method then systematically generates cuts that slice the cube in such a way that a prespecified global solution on its edge remains intact. The proposed method does not require the solution of linear programs or systems of linear equations as is often required by existing techniques. The author would like to thank Prof. S. E. Jacobsen for his valuable remarks on initial drafts of this paper and the referees for their constructive suggestions.  相似文献

This paper presents computational experience with a rather straight forward implementation of an edge search algorithm for obtaining the globally optimal solution for linear programs with an additional reverse convex constraint. The paper's purpose is to provide a collection of problems, with known optimal solutions, and performance information for an edge search implementation so that researchers may have some benchmarks with which to compare new methods for reverse convex programs or concave minimization problems. There appears to be nothing in the literature that provides computational experience with a basic edge search procedure. The edge search implementation uses a depth first strategy. As such, this paper's implementation of the edge search algorithm is a modification of Hillestad's algorithm [11]. A variety of test problems is generated by using a modification of the method of Sung and Rosen [20], as well as a new method that is presented in this paper. Test problems presented may be obtained at ftp://newton.ee.ucla.edu/nonconvex/pub/.  相似文献

A Cutting Plane Algorithm for Linear Reverse Convex Programs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, global optimization of linear programs with an additional reverse convex constraint is considered. This type of problem arises in many applications such as engineering design, communications networks, and many management decision support systems with budget constraints and economies-of-scale. The main difficulty with this type of problem is the presence of the complicated reverse convex constraint, which destroys the convexity and possibly the connectivity of the feasible region, putting the problem in a class of difficult and mathematically intractable problems. We present a cutting plane method within the scope of a branch-and-bound scheme that efficiently partitions the polytope associated with the linear constraints and systematically fathoms these portions through the use of the bounds. An upper bound and a lower bound for the optimal value is found and improved at each iteration. The algorithm terminates when all the generated subdivisions have been fathomed.  相似文献

The paper describes a method for computing a lower bound of the global minimum of an indefinite quadratic form over a simplex. The bound is derived by computing an underestimator of the convex envelope by solving a semidefinite program (SDP). This results in a convex quadratic program (QP). It is shown that the optimal value of the QP is a lower bound of the optimal value of the original problem. Since there exist fast (polynomial time) algorithms for solving SDP's and QP's the bound can be computed in reasonable time. Numerical experiments indicate that the relative error of the bound is about 10 percent for problems up to 20 variables, which is much better than a known SDP bound.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of minimizing an indefinite quadratic function subject to a single indefinite quadratic constraint. A key difficulty with this problem is its nonconvexity. Using Lagrange duality, we show that under a mild assumption, this problem can be solved by solving a linearly constrained convex univariate minimization problem. Finally, the superior efficiency of the new approach compared to the known semidefinite relaxation and a known approach from the literature is demonstrated by solving several randomly generated test problems.

In this work, we combine outer-approximation (OA) and bundle method algorithms for dealing with mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problems with nonsmooth convex objective and constraint functions. As the convergence analysis of OA methods relies strongly on the differentiability of the involved functions, OA algorithms may fail to solve general nonsmooth convex MINLP problems. In order to obtain OA algorithms that are convergent regardless the structure of the convex functions, we solve the underlying OA’s non-linear subproblems by a specialized bundle method that provides necessary information to cut off previously visited (non-optimal) integer points. This property is crucial for proving (finite) convergence of OA algorithms. We illustrate the numerical performance of the given proposal on a class of hybrid robust and chance-constrained problems that involve a random variable with finite support.  相似文献

Two algorithms for finding a global minimum of the product of two affine fractional functions over a compact convex set and solving linear fractional programs with an additional constraint defined by the product of two affine fractional functions are proposed. The algorithms are based on branch and bound techniques using an adaptive branching operation which takes place in one-dimensional intervals. Results from numerical experiments show that large scale problems can be efficiently solved by the proposed methods.  相似文献

A global optimization algorithm for linear fractional and bilinear programs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper a deterministic method is proposed for the global optimization of mathematical programs that involve the sum of linear fractional and/or bilinear terms. Linear and nonlinear convex estimator functions are developed for the linear fractional and bilinear terms. Conditions under which these functions are nonredundant are established. It is shown that additional estimators can be obtained through projections of the feasible region that can also be incorporated in a convex nonlinear underestimator problem for predicting lower bounds for the global optimum. The proposed algorithm consists of a spatial branch and bound search for which several branching rules are discussed. Illustrative examples and computational results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.  相似文献

We use the merit function technique to formulate a linearly constrained bilevel convex quadratic problem as a convex program with an additional convex-d.c. constraint. To solve the latter problem we approximate it by convex programs with an additional convex-concave constraint using an adaptive simplicial subdivision. This approximation leads to a branch-and-bound algorithm for finding a global optimal solution to the bilevel convex quadratic problem. We illustrate our approach with an optimization problem over the equilibrium points of an n-person parametric noncooperative game.  相似文献

Quadratically constrained quadratic programming is an important class of optimization problems. We consider the case with one quadratic constraint. Since both the objective function and its constraint can be neither convex nor concave, it is also known as the ‘generalized trust region subproblem.’ The theory and algorithms for this problem have been well studied under the Slater condition. In this article, we analyse the duality property between the primal problem and its Lagrangian dual problem, and discuss the attainability of the optimal primal solution without the Slater condition. The relations between the Lagrangian dual and semidefinite programming dual is also given.  相似文献

In Ref. 1, a general class of branch-and-bound methods was proposed by Horst for solving global optimization problems. One of the main contributions of Ref. 1 was the opportunity of handling partition elements whose feasibility is not known. Deletion-by-infeasibility rules were presented for problems where the feasible set is convex, is defined by finitely many convex and reverse convex constraints, or is defined by Lipschitzian inequalities. In this note, we propose a new deletion-by-infeasibility rule for problems whose feasible set is defined by functions representable as differences of convex functions. This research was supported in part by the Hungarian National Research Foundation, Grant OTKA No. 2568.  相似文献

Portfolio optimization with linear and fixed transaction costs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We consider the problem of portfolio selection, with transaction costs and constraints on exposure to risk. Linear transaction costs, bounds on the variance of the return, and bounds on different shortfall probabilities are efficiently handled by convex optimization methods. For such problems, the globally optimal portfolio can be computed very rapidly. Portfolio optimization problems with transaction costs that include a fixed fee, or discount breakpoints, cannot be directly solved by convex optimization. We describe a relaxation method which yields an easily computable upper bound via convex optimization. We also describe a heuristic method for finding a suboptimal portfolio, which is based on solving a small number of convex optimization problems (and hence can be done efficiently). Thus, we produce a suboptimal solution, and also an upper bound on the optimal solution. Numerical experiments suggest that for practical problems the gap between the two is small, even for large problems involving hundreds of assets. The same approach can be used for related problems, such as that of tracking an index with a portfolio consisting of a small number of assets.  相似文献

This paper describes a new technique for generating convex, strictly concave and indefinite (bilinear or not) quadratic programming problems. These problems have a number of properties that make them useful for test purposes. For example, strictly concave quadratic problems with their global maximum in the interior of the feasible domain and with an exponential number of local minima with distinct function values and indefinite and jointly constrained bilinear problems with nonextreme global minima, can be generated.Unlike most existing methods our construction technique does not require the solution of any subproblems or systems of equations. In addition, the authors know of no other technique for generating jointly constrained bilinear programming problems.Support of this work has been provided by the Instituto Nacional de Investigação Científica de Portugal (INIC) under contract 89/EXA/5 and by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada operating grant 5671.Much of this paper was completed while this author was on a research sabbatical at the Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal.  相似文献

Our problem of interest consists of minimizing a separable, convex and differentiable function over a convex set, defined by bounds on the variables and an explicit constraint described by a separable convex function. Applications are abundant, and vary from equilibrium problems in the engineering and economic sciences, through resource allocation and balancing problems in manufacturing, statistics, military operations research and production and financial economics, to subproblems in algorithms for a variety of more complex optimization models. This paper surveys the history and applications of the problem, as well as algorithmic approaches to its solution. The most common techniques are based on finding the optimal value of the Lagrange multiplier for the explicit constraint, most often through the use of a type of line search procedure. We analyze the most relevant references, especially regarding their originality and numerical findings, summarizing with remarks on possible extensions and future research.  相似文献

We consider a class of convex programming problems whose objective function is given as a linear function plus a convex function whose arguments are linear functions of the decision variables and whose feasible region is a polytope. We show that there exists an optimal solution to this class of problems on a face of the constraint polytope of dimension not more than the number of arguments of the convex function. Based on this result, we develop a method to solve this problem that is inspired by the simplex method for linear programming. It is shown that this method terminates in a finite number of iterations in the special case that the convex function has only a single argument. We then use this insight to develop a second algorithm that solves the problem in a finite number of iterations for an arbitrary number of arguments in the convex function. A computational study illustrates the efficiency of the algorithm and suggests that the average-case performance of these algorithms is a polynomial of low order in the number of decision variables. In this paper a new approach for the global solution of nonconvex MINLP (Mixed Integer NonLinear Programming) problems that contain signomial (generalized geometric) expressions is proposed and illustrated. By applying different variable transformation techniques and a discretization scheme a lower bounding convex MINLP problem can be derived. The convexified MINLP problem can be solved with standard methods. The key element in this approach is that all transformations are applied termwise. In this way all convex parts of the problem are left unaffected by the transformations. The method is illustrated by four example problems.

This paper is concerned with the global optimization problem of minimizing a concave function subject to linear constraints and an additional facial reverse convex constraint. Here, the feasible set is the union of some faces of the polyhedron determined by the linear constraints. Several well-known mathematical problems can be written or transformed into the form considered. The paper addresses the Lagrangian duality of the problem. It is shown that, under slight assumptions, the duality gap can be closed with a finite dual multiplier. Finite methods based on solving concave minimization problems are also proposed. We deal with the advantages accrued when outer approximation, cutting plane, or branch-and-bound methods are used for solving these subproblems. This research was supported in part by the Hungarian National Research Foundation, Grant OTKA 2568. This paper discusses optimization problems with nonlinear inequality constraints and presents a new sequential quadratically-constrained quadratic programming (NSQCQP) method of feasible directions for solving such problems. At each iteration. the NSQCQP method solves only one subproblem which consists of a convex quadratic objective function, convex quadratic equality constraints, as well as a perturbation variable and yields a feasible direction of descent (improved direction). The following results on the NSQCQP are obtained: the subproblem solved at each iteration is feasible and solvable: the NSQCQP is globally convergent under the Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification (MFCQ); the improved direction can avoid the Maratos effect without the assumption of strict complementarity; the NSQCQP is superlinearly and quasiquadratically convergent under some weak assumptions without thestrict complementarity assumption and the linear independence constraint qualification (LICQ).
