Solvable groups with polynomial Dehn functions

Given a finitely presented group , finitely generated subgroup of , and a monomorphism , we obtain an upper bound of the Dehn function of the corresponding HNN-extension in terms of the Dehn function of and the distortion of in . Using such a bound, we construct first examples of non-polycyclic solvable groups with polynomial Dehn functions. The constructed groups are metabelian and contain the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups. In particular, this answers a question posed by Birget, Ol'shanskii, Rips, and Sapir.

     

Filling Length in Finitely Presentable Groups

We study the filling length function for a finite presentation of a group , and interpret this function as an optimal bound on the length of the boundary loop as a van Kampen diagram is collapsed to the basepoint using a combinatorial notion of a null-homotopy. We prove that filling length is well behaved under change of presentation of . We look at 'AD-pairs' (f,g) for a finite presentation : that is, an isoperimetric function f and an isodiametric function g that can be realised simultaneously. We prove that the filling length admits a bound of the form [g+1][log (f+1)+1] whenever (f,g) is an AD-pair for . Further we show that (up to multiplicative constants) if is an isoperimetric function ( ) for a finite presentation then ( ) is an AD-pair. Polynomial Dehn Functions and the Length of Asynchronously Automatic Structures

We extend the range of observed behaviour among length functionsof optimal asynchronously automatic structures. We do so bymeans of a construction that yields asynchronously automaticgroups with finite aspherical presentations where the Dehn functionof the group is polynomial of arbitrary degree. Many of thesegroups can be embedded in the automorphism group of a free group.Moreover, the fact that the groups have aspherical presentationsmakes them useful tools in the search to determine the spectrumof exponents for second order Dehn functions. Subcubic Growth of the Averaged Dehn Function for a Class 2 Nilpotent Group

We show that the averaged Dehn function with respect to each finite presentation of an arbitrary finitely generated class 2 nilpotent group is subcubic. For the finite rank 2 free class 2 nilpotent group this implies the subasymptoticity of the averaged Dehn function in the sense of M. A generalization of the Discrete Isoperimetric Inequality for Piecewise Smooth Curves of Constant Geodesic Curvature

Summary The discrete isoperimetric problem is to determine the maximal area polygon with at most <InlineEquation ID=IE"1"><EquationSource Format="TEX"><![CDATA[<InlineEquation ID=IE"2"><EquationSource Format="TEX"><![CDATA[$]]></EquationSource></InlineEquation>]]></EquationSource></InlineEquation>k$ vertices and of a given perimeter. It is a classical fact that the unique optimal polygon on the Euclidean plane is the regular one. The same statement for the hyperbolic plane was proved by K\'aroly Bezdek [1] and on the sphere by L\'aszl\'o Fejes T\'oth [3]. In the present paper we extend the discrete isoperimetric inequality for ``polygons' on the three planes of constant curvature bounded by arcs of a given constant geodesic curvature.

Schwarz-Pick Inequalities for Hyperbolic Domains in the Extended Plane

Let and be two hyperbolic simply connected domains in the extended complex plane C¯ = C¯ {}. We derive sharp upper bounds for the modulus of the nth derivative of a holomorphic, resp. meromorphic function f: at a point z ₀ . The bounds depend on the densities (z ₀) and (f(z ₀)) of the Poincaré metrics and on the hyperbolic distances of the points z ₀ and f(z ₀) to the point .     

Some Moment and Exponential Inequalities for V-Statistics with Bounded Kernels

This paper provides moment and exponential inequalities for V-statistics with uniformly bounded kernels. The main results are based on moment inequalities for sub-Bernoulli functions of independent random variables. These moment inequalities lead to extensions of the Bernstein inequality to V-statistics. U-statistics are also discussed.     

Subquadratic Growth of the Averaged Dehn Function for Free Abelian Groups

For finite rank free abelian groups with the standard presentation, the averaged Dehn function is proved to be subquadratic.

Attainability of the Exponent of Exponential Growth in Free Products of Cyclic Groups

In the paper, the set of exponents of exponential growth (growth exponents) for a finitely generated group with respect to all possible generators of this group is studied. It is proved that the greatest lower bound of this set is attained for the free products of a cyclic group of prime order and a free group of finite rank.

Estimation of the L p -norms of stress functions for finitely connected plane domains

Let u(x, G) be the classical stress function of a finitely connected plane domain G. The isoperimetric properties of the L ^p -norms of u(x, G) are studied. Payne’s inequality for simply connected domains is generalized to finitely connected domains. It is proved that the L ^p -norms of the functions u(x, G) and u ^?1 (x, G) strictly decrease with respect to the parameter p, and a sharp bound for the rate of decrease of the L ^p -norms of these functions in terms of the corresponding L ^p -norms of the stress function for an annulus is obtained. A new integral inequality for the L ^p -norms of u(x, G), which is an analog of the inequality obtained by F. G. Avkhadiev and the author for the L ^p -norm of conformal radii, is proved.

The Poincaré metric and isoperimetric inequalities for hyperbolic polygons

We prove several isoperimetric inequalities for the conformal radius (or equivalently for the Poincaré density) of polygons on the hyperbolic plane. Our results include, as limit cases, the isoperimetric inequality for the conformal radius of Euclidean -gons conjectured by G. Pólya and G. Szegö in 1951 and a similar inequality for the hyperbolic -gons of the maximal hyperbolic area conjectured by J. Hersch. Both conjectures have been proved in previous papers by the third author.

Our approach uses the method based on a special triangulation of polygons and weighted inequalities for the reduced modules of trilaterals developed by A. Yu. Solynin. We also employ the dissymmetrization transformation of V. N. Dubinin. As an important part of our proofs, we obtain monotonicity and convexity results for special combinations of the Euler gamma functions, which appear to have a significant interest in their own right.
