We report vibrational predissociation spectra of the (H2O)n- cluster ions in the OH stretching region to determine whether the spectral signature of the electron-binding motif identified in the smaller clusters [Hammer et al. Science 306, 675 (2004)] continues to be important in the intermediate size regime (n = 7-21). This signature consists of a redshifted doublet that dominates the OH stretching region, and has been traced primarily to the excitation of a single water molecule residing in a double H-bond acceptor (AA) binding site, oriented with both of its H atoms pointing toward the excess electron cloud. Strong absorption near the characteristic AA doublet is found to persist in the spectra of the larger clusters, but the pattern evolves into a broadened triplet around n = 11. A single free OH feature associated with dangling hydrogen atoms on the cluster surface is observed to emerge for n > or = 15, in sharp contrast to the multiplet pattern of unbonded OH stretches displayed by the H+(H2O)n clusters throughout the n = 2-29 range. We also explore the vibration-electronic coupling associated with normal-mode displacements of the AA molecule that most strongly interact with the excess electron. Specifically, electronic structure calculations on the hexamer anion indicate that displacement along the -OH2 symmetric stretching mode dramatically distorts the excess electron cloud, thus accounting for the anomalously large oscillator strength of the AA water stretching vibrations. We also discuss these vibronic interactions in the context of a possible relaxation mechanism for the excited electronic states involving the excess electron.  相似文献

Vibrational predissociation spectra are reported for size-selected NH4+ (H2O)n clusters (n=5-22) in the 2500-3900 cm(-1) region. We concentrate on the sharp free OH stretching bands to deduce the local H-bonding configurations of water molecules on the cluster surface. As in the spectra of the protonated water clusters, the free OH bands in NH4+ (H2O)n evolve from a quartet at small sizes (n<7), to a doublet around n=9, and then to a single peak at the n=20 magic number cluster, before the doublet re-emerges at larger sizes. This spectral simplification at the magic number cluster mirrors that found earlier in the H+(H2O)n clusters. We characterize the likely structures at play for the n=19 and 20 clusters with electronic structure calculations. The most stable form of the n=20 cluster is predicted to have a surface-solvated NH4+ ion that lies considerably lower in energy than isomers with the NH4+ in the interior.  相似文献

We report the first harmonic vibrational spectra for each of the lowest lying isomers within the four major families of minima of (H2O)20, namely, the dodecahedron, fused cubes, face-sharing pentagonal prisms, and edge-sharing pentagonal prisms. These were obtained at the second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation level of theory (MP2) with the augmented correlation consistent basis set of double zeta quality (aug-cc-pVDZ) at the corresponding minimum energy geometries. The computed infrared (IR) spectra are the first ones obtained from first principles for these clusters. They were found to contain spectral features, which can be directly mapped onto the distinctive spectroscopic signatures of their constituent tetramer, pentamer, and octamer fragments. The dodecahedron spectra show the richest structure in the OH stretching region and are associated with the most redshifted OH vibrations with respect to the monomer. The lowest lying edge-sharing pentagonal prism isomer displays intense IR active vibrations that are redshifted by approximately 600 cm(-1) with respect to the water monomer. Furthermore the most redshifted, IR-active OH stretching vibrations for all four networks correspond to hydrogen bonded OH groups, which exhibit the following two common characteristics: (i) they belong to fragments which have a "free" OH stretch and (ii) they act as donors to a neighboring water molecule along a "dimerlike" (strong) hydrogen bond. The zero-point energy corrected MP2/CBS (complete basis set) limit binding energies D(0) for the four isomers are -163.1 kcal/mol (edge-sharing pentagonal prism), -160.1 kcal/mol (face-sharing pentagonal prism), -157.5 kcal/mol (fused cubes), and -148.1 kcal/mol (dodecahedron).

Predissociation spectra of the H(5)O(2) (+)RG(n)(RG = Ar,Ne) cluster ions are reported in energy regions corresponding to both the OH stretching (3350-3850 cm(-1)) and shared proton (850-1950 cm(-1)) vibrations. The two free OH stretching bands displayed by the Ne complex are quite close to the band origins identified earlier in bare H(5)O(2) (+) [L. I. Yeh, M. Okumura, J. D. Myers, J. M. Price, and Y. T. Lee, J. Chem. Phys. 91, 7319 (1989)], indicating that the symmetrical H(5)O(2) (+) "Zundel" ion remains largely intact in H(5)O(2) (+)Ne. The low-energy spectrum of the Ne complex is simpler than that observed previously for H(5)O(2) (+)Ar, and is dominated by two sharp transitions at 928 and 1047 cm(-1), with a weaker feature at 1763 cm(-1). The H(5)O(2) (+)Ar(n),n = 1-5 spectra generally exhibit complex band structures reflecting solvent-induced symmetry breaking of the Zundel core ion. The extent of solvent perturbation is evaluated with electronic structure calculations, which predict that the rare gas atoms should attach to the spectator OH groups of H(5)O(2) (+) rather than to the shared proton. In the asymmetric complexes, the shared proton resides closer to the more heavily solvated water molecule, leading to redshifts in the rare gas atom-solvated OH stretches and to blueshifts in the shared proton vibrations. The experimental spectra are compared with recent full-dimensional vibrational calculations (diffusion Monte Carlo and multimode/vibrational configuration interaction) on H(5)O(2) (+). These results are consistent with assignment of the strong low-energy bands in the H(5)O(2) (+)Ne spectrum to the vibration of the shared proton mostly along the O-O axis, with the 1763 cm(-1) band traced primarily to the out-of-phase, intramolecular bending vibrations of the two water molecules.  相似文献

Infrared photodissociation spectra of Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n) (n = 1-4) and Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n)-Ar (n = 1-3) were measured in the OH stretching region, 3000-3800 cm(-1). For n = 1 and 2, sharp absorption bands were observed in the free OH stretching region, all of which were well reproduced by the spectra calculated for the solvated-type geometry with no hydrogen bond. For n = 3 and 4, there were broad vibrational bands in the energy region of hydrogen-bonded OH stretching vibrations, 3000-3500 cm(-1). Energies of possible isomers for the Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(3),4 ions with hydrogen bonds were calculated in order to assign these bands. It was found that the third and fourth methanol molecules form hydrogen bonds with methanol molecules in the first solvation shell, rather than a direct bonding with the Al(+) ion. For the Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n) clusters with n = 1-4, we obtained no evidence of the insertion reaction, which occurs in Al(+)(H(2)O)(n). One possible explanation of the difference between these two systems is that the potential energy barriers between the solvated and inserted isomers in the Al(+)(CH(3)OH)(n) system is too high to form the inserted-type isomers.  相似文献

The hydrogen-bonded clusters of 2-fluoropyridine with water were studied experimentally in a supersonic free jet and analyzed with molecular orbital calculations. The IR spectra of 2-fluoropyridine-(H2O)(n) (n = 1 to 3) clusters were observed with a fluorescence detected infrared depletion (FDIR) technique in the OH and CH stretching vibrational regions. The frequencies of OH stretching vibrations show that water molecules bond to the nitrogen atom of 2-fluoropyridine in the clusters. The hydrogen-bond formation between aromatic CH and O was evidenced in the 1:2 and 1:3 clusters from the experimental and calculated results. The overtone vibrations of the OH bending mode in hydrogen-bonded water molecules appear in the IR spectra, and these frequencies become higher with the increase of the number of water molecules in the clusters. The band structure of the IR spectra in the CH stretching region changes depending on the number of coordinating water molecules.  相似文献

We have used a recently developed electron-methanol molecule pseudopotential in approximate quantum mechanical calculations to evaluate and statistically analyze the physical properties of an excess electron in the field of equilibrated neutral methanol clusters ((CH(3)OH)(n), n=50-500). The methanol clusters were generated in classical molecular dynamics simulations at nominal 100 and 200 K temperatures. Topological analysis of the neutral clusters indicates that methyl groups cover the surface of the clusters almost exclusively, while the associated hydroxyl groups point inside. Since the initial neutral clusters are lacking polarity on the surface and compact inside, the excess electron can barely attach to these structures. Nevertheless, most of the investigated cluster configurations do support weakly stabilized cluster anion states. We find that similarly to water clusters, the pre-existing instantaneous dipole moment of the neutral clusters binds the electron. The localizing electrons occupy diffuse, weakly bound surface states that largely engulf the cluster although their centers are located outside the cluster molecular frame. The initial localization of the excess electron is reflected in its larger radius compared to water due to the lack of free OH hydrogens on the cluster surface. The stabilization of the excess electron increases, while the radius decreases monotonically as the clusters grow in size. Stable, interior bound states of the excess electron are not observed to form neither in finite size methanol clusters nor in the equilibrium bulk.  相似文献

Infrared spectra of various OH+ and H2O+ isotopomers solvated in solid argon are presented. The OH+ and H2O+ cations were produced by co-deposition of H2O/Ar mixture with high-frequency discharged Ar at 4 K. Detailed isotopic substitution studies confirm the assignments of absorptions at 3054.9 and 3040.0 cm(-1) to the antisymmetric and symmetric H-O-H stretching vibrations of H2O+ and 2979.6 cm(-1) to the O-H stretching vibration of OH+. The frequencies of H2O+ solvated in solid argon are red-shifted, whereas the frequency of OH+ is blue-shifted with respect to the gas-phase fundamentals. On the basis of previous gas-phase studies and quantum chemical calculations, the OH+ and H2O+ cations solvated in solid argon may be regarded as the OH+-Ar5 and H2O+-Ar4 complexes isolated in the argon matrix.  相似文献

To understand the mechanism of aqueous acid dissociation, which plays a fundamental role in aqueous chemistry, the ionic dissociation of HX acids (X=F, Cl, Br, and I) in water clusters up to hexamer is examined using density functional theory and M?ller-Plesset second-order perturbation methods (MP2). Further accurate analysis based on the coupled clusters theory with singles and doubles excitations agrees with the MP2 results. The equilibrium structures, binding energies, electronic properties, stretching frequencies, and rotational constants of HX(H(2)O)(n) and X(-)(H(3)O)(+)(H(2)O)(n-1) are calculated. The dissociated structures of HF and HCl can be formed for n>/=4, while those of HBr and HI can be formed for n>/=3. Among these, the dissociated structures of HX (X=Cl, Br, and I) are more stable than the undissociated ones for n>/=4, while such cases for HF would require much more than six water molecules, in agreement with previous reports. The IR spectra of stable clusters including anharmonic frequencies are predicted to facilitate IR experimental studies. Undissociated systems have X-H stretching modes which are highly redshifted by hydration. Dissociated hydrogen halides show three characteristic OH stretching modes of hydronium moiety, which are redshifted from the OH stretching modes of water molecules.  相似文献

Size resolved IR action spectra of neutral sodium doped methanol clusters have been measured using IR excitation modulated photoionisation mass spectroscopy. The Na(CH(3)OH)(n) clusters were generated in a supersonic He seeded expansion of methanol by subsequent Na doping in a pick-up cell. A combined analysis of IR action spectra, IP evolutions and harmonic predictions of IR spectra (using density functional theory) of the most stable structures revealed that for n = 4, 5 structures with an exterior Na atom showing high ionisation potentials (IPs) of ~4 eV dominate, while for n = 6, 7 clusters with lower IPs (~3.2 eV) featuring fully solvated Na atoms and solvated electrons emerge and dominate the IR action spectra. For n = 4 simulations of photoionisation spectra using an ab initio MD approach confirm the dominance of exterior structures and explain the previously reported appearance IP of 3.48 eV by small fractions of clusters with partly solvated Na atoms. Only for this cluster size a shift in the isomer composition with cluster temperature has been observed, which may be related to kinetic stabilisation of less Na solvated clusters at low temperatures. Features of slow fragmentation dynamics of cationic Na(+)(CH(3)OH)(6) clusters have been observed for the photoionisation near the adiabatic limit. This finding points to the relevance of previously proposed non-vertical photoionisation dynamics of this system.  相似文献

This paper describes a systematic study on the clathrate structure of (H+)(H2O)21 using tandem mass spectrometry, vibrational predissociation spectroscopy, Monte Carlo simulations, and density functional theory calculations. We produced (H+)(H2O)n from a continuous corona-discharged supersonic expansion and observed three anomalies simultaneously at the cluster temperature near 150 K, including (1) the peak at n=21 is more intense than its neighboring ions in the mass spectrum, (2) the size-dependent dissociation fractions show a distinct drop for the 21-mer, and (3) the infrared spectrum of (H+)(H2O)21 exhibits only a single feature at 3699 cm(-1), corresponding to the free-OH stretching of three-coordinated water molecules. Interestingly, the anomalies appear or disappear together with cluster temperature, indicating close correlation of these three observations. The observations, together with Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory calculations, corroborate the notion for the formation of a distorted pentagonal dodecahedral (5(12)) cage with a H2O molecule in the cage and a H3O+ ion on the surface for this "magic number" water cluster ion. The dodecahedral cage melts at higher temperatures, as evidenced by the emergence of a free-OH stretching feature at 3717 cm(-1) for the two-coordinated water in (H+)(H2O)21 produced in a warmer molecular beam. Extension of this study to larger clusters strongly suggests that the experimentally observed isomer of (H+)(H2O)28 is most likely to consist of a distorted protonated pentakaidecahedral (5(12)6(3)) cage enclosing two neutral water molecules.  相似文献

Calculations at AM1, PM3, and HF/6‐31G levels of part of the IR spectrum of the water–kaolinite intercalated system based on a 96‐atom cluster of kaolinite with one water molecule are reported. Only the water molecule conformation is optimized. Frequencies and intensities for just the water vibrations and stretchings of four cluster hydroxyls were calculated through partial Hessian matrices and polar tensors obtained by numerical differentiation of energy gradients and dipole moment. The water molecule was found to attach to the cluster mainly through a double hydrogen bond to the siloxane inner surface, partially entering the siloxane ring hexagonal hole. Though the theoretical results predict that the water OH stretching frequencies decrease from the gas‐phase state to the intercalated state, they are still higher than expected with respect to the observed spectrum. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the difficult task of finding global minimum energy structures for molecular clusters of nontrivial size, we present a highly efficient parallel implementation of an evolutionary algorithm. By completely abandoning the traditional concept of generations and by replacing it with a less rigid pool concept, we have managed to eliminate serial bottlenecks completely and can operate the algorithm efficiently on an arbitrary number of parallel processes. Nevertheless, our new algorithm still realizes all of the main features of our old, successful implementation. First tests of the new algorithm are shown for the highly demanding problem of water clusters modeled by a potential with flexible, polarizable monomers (TTM2-F). For this problem, our new algorithm not only reproduces all of the global minima proposed previously in considerably less CPU time but also leads to improved proposals in several cases. These, in turn, qualitatively change our earlier predictions concerning the transitions from all-surface structures to cages with a single interior molecule, and from one to two interior molecules. Furthermore, we compare preliminary results up to n = 105 with locally optimized cuts from several ice modifications. This comparison indicates that relaxed ice structures may start to be competitive already at cluster sizes above n = 90.  相似文献

Quasiclassical ab initio simulations of the ionization dynamics in a (H(2)O)(17) cluster, the first water cluster that includes a fourfold coordinated (internally solvated) water molecule, have been carried out to obtain a detailed picture of the elementary processes and energy redistribution induced by ionization in a model of aqueous water. General features observable from the simulations are the following: (i) well within 100 fs following the ionization, one or more proton transfers are seen to take place from the "ionized molecule" to neighboring molecules and beyond, forming a hydronium ion and a hydroxyl radical; (ii) two water molecules close to the ionized water molecule play an important role in the reaction, in what we term a "reactive trimer." The reaction time is gated by the encounter of the ionized water molecule with these two neighboring molecules, and this occurs anytime between 10 and 50 fs after the ionization. The distances of approach between the ionized molecule and the neighboring molecules indeed display best the time characteristics of the transfer of a proton, and thus of the formation of a hydronium ion and a OH radical. These findings are consistent with those for smaller cyclic clusters, albeit the dynamics of the proton transfer displays more varieties in the larger cluster than in the small cyclic clusters. We used a partitioning scheme for the kinetic energy in the (H(2)O)(17) system that distinguishes between the reactive trimer and the surrounding "medium." The analysis of the simulations indicates that the kinetic energy of the surrounding medium increases markedly right after the event of ionization, a manifestation of the local heating of the medium. The increase in kinetic energy is consistent with a reorganization of the surrounding medium, electrostatically forced in a very short time by the water cation and in a longer time by the formation of the hydronium ion.  相似文献

An ab initio molecular dynamics method was used to compare the ionic dissolution of soluble sodium chloride (NaCl) in water clusters with the highly insoluble silver chloride (AgCl). The investigations focused on the solvation structures, dynamics, and energetics of the contact ion pair (CIP) and of the solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP) in NaCl(H(2)O)(n) and AgCl(H(2)O)(n) with cluster sizes of n = 6, 10 and 14. We found that the minimum cluster size required to stabilize the SSIP configuration in NaCl(H(2)O)(n) is temperature-dependent. For n = 6, both configurations are present as two distinct local minima on the free-energy profile at 100 K, whereas SSIP is unstable at 300 K. Both configurations, separated by a low barrier (<10 kJ mol(-1)), are identifiable on the free energy profiles of NaCl(H(2)O)(n) for n = 10 and 14 at 300 K, with the Na(+)/Cl(-) pairs being internally solvated in the water cluster and the SSIP configuration being slightly higher in energy (<5 kJ mol(-1)). In agreement with the low bulk solubility of AgCl, no SSIP minimum is observed on the free-energy profiles of finite AgCl(H(2)O)(n) clusters. The AgCl interaction is more covalent in nature, and is less affected by the water solvent. Unlike NaCl, AgCl is mainly solvated on the surface in finite water clusters, and ionic dissolution requires a significant reorganization of the solvent structure.  相似文献

Various properties of water clusters in the n = 2–34 size regime with the change of cluster size have been systemically explored based on the newly developed flexible-body and charge-fluctuating ABEEM/MM water potential model. The ABEEM/MM water model is to take ABEEM charges of all atoms, bonds, and lone-pairs of water molecules into the intermolecular electrostatic interaction term in molecular mechanics. The computed correlating properties characterizing water clusters (H2O) n (n = 2–34) include optimal structures, structural parameters, ABEEM charge distributions, binding energies, hydrogen bonds, dipole moments, and so on. The study of optimal structures shows that the ABEEM/MM model can correctly predict the following important structural features, such as the transition from two-dimensional (from dimer to pentamer) to three-dimensional (for clusters larger than the hexamer) structures at hexamer region, the transition from cubes to cages at dodecamer (H2O)12, the transition from all-surface (all water molecules on the surface of the cluster) to one water-centered (one water molecule at the center of the cluster, fully solvated) structures at (H2O)17, the transition from one to two internal molecules in the cage at (H2O)33, and so on. The first three structural transitions are in good agreement with those obtained from previous work, while the fourth transition is different from that identified by Hartke. Subsequently, a systematic investigation of structural parameters, ABEEM charges, energetic properties, and dipole moments of water clusters with increasing cluster size can provide important reference for describing the objective trait of hydrogen bonds in water cluster system, and also provide a strong impetus toward understanding how the water clusters approach the bulk limit.  相似文献

Structures of nickel cluster ions adsorbed with methanol, Ni3+ (CH3OH)m (m = 1-3) and Ni4+ (CH3OH)m (m = 1-4) were investigated by using infrared photodissociation (IR-PD) spectroscopy based on a tandem-type mass spectrometer, where they were produced by passing Ni3,4+ through methanol vapor under a multiple collision condition. The IR-PD spectra were measured in the wavenumber region between 3100 and 3900 cm-1. In each IR-PD spectrum, a single peak was observed at a wavenumber lower by approximately 40 cm-1 than that of the OH stretching vibration of a free methanol molecule and was assigned to the OH stretching vibrations of the methanol molecules in Ni3,4+ (CH3OH)m. The photodissociation was analyzed by assuming that Ni3,4+ (CH3OH)m dissociate unimolecularly after the photon energy absorbed by them is statistically distributed among the accessible modes of Ni3,4+ (CH3OH)m. In comparison with the calculations performed by the density functional theory, it is concluded that (1) the oxygen atom of each methanol molecule is bound to one of the nickel atoms in Ni3,4+ (defined as molecular chemisorption), (2) the methanol molecules in Ni3,4+ (CH3OH)m do not form any hydrogen bonds, and (3) the cross section for demethanation [CH4 detachment from Nin+ (CH3OH)] is related to the electron density distribution inside the methanol molecule.  相似文献

The vibrational characteristics (vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities and Raman activities) for the hydrogen-bonded system of Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) with five water molecules have been predicted using ab initio SCF/6-31G(d,p) calculations and DFT (BLYP) calculations with 6-31G(d,p) and 6-31++G(d,p) basis sets. The changes in the vibrational characteristics from free monomers to a complex have been calculated. The ab initio and BLYP calculations show that the complexation between Vitamin C and five water molecules leads to large red shifts of the stretching vibrations for the monomer bonds involved in the hydrogen bonding and very strong increase in their IR intensity. The predicted frequency shifts for the stretching vibrations from Vitamin C taking part in the hydrogen bonding are up to -508 cm(-1). The magnitude of the wavenumber shifts is indicative of relatively strong OH...H hydrogen-bonded interactions. In the same time the IR intensity and Raman activity of these vibrations increase upon complexation. The IR intensity increases dramatically (up to 12 times) and Raman activity increases up to three times. The ab initio and BLYP calculations show, that the symmetric OH vibrations of water molecules are more sensitive to the complexation. The hydrogen bonding leads to very large red shifts of these vibrations and very strong increase in their IR intensity. The asymmetric OH stretching vibrations of water, free from hydrogen bonding are less sensitive to the complexation than the hydrogen-bonded symmetric OH stretching vibrations. The increases of the IR intensities for these vibrations are lower and red shifts are negligible.  相似文献
