We study the structure of classifying spaces of Kač-Moody groups from a homotopy theoretic point of view. They behave in many respects as in the compact Lie group case. The mod p cohomology algebra is noetherian and Lannes'T functor computes the mod p cohomology of classifying spaces of centralizers of elementary abelian p-subgroups. Also, spaces of maps from classifying spaces of finite p-groups to classifying spaces of Kač-Moody groups are described in terms of classifying spaces of centralizers while the classifying space of a Kač-Moody group itself can be described as a homotopy colimit of classifying spaces of centralizers of elementary abelian p-subgroups, up to p-completion. We show that these properties are common to a larger class of groups, also including parabolic subgroups of Kač-Moody groups, and centralizers of finite p-subgroups. We show that for any given differentiable embedding of the three-sphere in six-space there exists a Seifert surface (in six-space) with arbitrarily prescribed signature. This implies, according to our previous paper, that given such a (6,3)-knot endowed with normal one-field, we can construct a Seifert surface so that the outward normal field along its boundary coincides with the given normal one-field. This aspect enables us to understand the resemblance between Ekholm–Szűcs’ formula for the Smale invariant and a formula in our previous paper for differentiable (6,3)-knots. As a consequence, we show that an immersion of the three-sphere in five-space can be regularly homotoped to the projection of an embedding in six-space if and only if its Smale invariant is even. We also correct a sign error in our previous paper: “A geometric formula for Haefliger knots” [Topology 43: 1425–1447 2004].   相似文献

We give a new proof of the Minami–Webb formula for classifying spaces of finite groups by exploiting Symonds’s resolution of Webb’s conjecture. The methods are applicable to obtain a stable decomposition of Minami’s type for the classifying spaces of the three exotic p-local finite groups which were introduced by Ruiz and Viruel at the prime 7. We obtain a similar decomposition for the classifying spaces of a family of exotic p-local finite groups which were constructed by Broto, Levi and Oliver. Suppose that G is a compact Lie group, M and N are orientable, free G-manifolds and f : M → N is an equivariant map. We show that the degree of f satisfies a formula involving data given by the classifying maps of the orbit spaces M/G and N/G. In particular, if the generator of the top dimensional cohomology of M/G with integer coefficients is in the image of the cohomology map induced by the classifying map for M, then the degree is one. The condition that the map be equivariant can be relaxed: it is enough to require that it be “nearly equivariant”, up to a positive constant. We will also discuss the G-average construction and show that the requirement that the map be equivariant can be replaced by a somewhat weaker condition involving the average of the map. These results are applied to maps into real, complex and quaternionic Stiefel manifolds. In particular, we show that a nearly equivariant map of a complex or quaternionic Stiefel manifold into itself has degree one. Dedicated to the memory of Jean Leray  相似文献

Like minimal surface immersions in 3-space, pluriharmonic maps into symmetric spaces allow a one-parameter family of isometric deformations rotating the differential (“associated family”); in fact, pluriharmonic maps are characterized by this property. We give a geometric proof of this fact and investigate the “isotropic” case where this family is constant. It turns out that isotropic pluriharmonic maps arise from certain holomorphic maps into flag manifolds. Further, we also consider higher dimensional generalizations of constant mean curvature surfaces which are K?hler submanifolds with parallel (1,1) part of their soecond fundamental form; under certain restrictions there are also characterized by having some kind of (“weak”) associated family. Examples where this family is constant arise from extrinsic K?hler symmetric spaces. Received: 8 July 1997  相似文献

We construct new “virtually smooth” modular compactifications of spaces of maps from nonsingular curves to smooth projective toric varieties. They generalize Givental's compactifications, when the complex structure of the curve is allowed to vary and markings are included, and are the toric counterpart of the moduli spaces of stable quotients introduced by Marian, Oprea, and Pandharipande to compactify spaces of maps to Grassmannians. A brief discussion of the resulting invariants and their (conjectural) relation with Gromov-Witten theory is also included.  相似文献

By applying the theory of quasiconformal maps in measure metric spaces that was introduced by Heinonen-Koskela, we characterize bi-Lipschitz maps by modulus inequalities of rings and maximal, minimal derivatives in Q-regular Loewner spaces. Meanwhile the sufficient and necessary conditions for quasiconformal maps to become bi-Lipschitz maps are also obtained. These results generalize Rohde’s theorem in ℝ n and improve Balogh’s corresponding results in Carnot groups. This research is supported by China NSF (Grant No. 10271077)  相似文献

For homomorphisms between groups, one can divide out the kernel to get an injection. Here, we develop a notion of kernels for maps between classifying spaces of compact Lie groups. We show that the kernel is a normal subgroup in a modified sense and prove a generalization of a theorem of Quillen, namely, a mapf:BGBH p is injective, iff the induced map in mod-p cohomology is finite. Moreover, for compact connected Lie groups, every mapf:BGBH p factors over a quotient ofG in a modified sense and this factorisation is an injection.  相似文献

We study harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces M to the loop spaces ΩG of compact Lie groups G, using the twistor approach. Harmonic maps into loop spaces are of special interest because of their relation to the Yang-Mills equations on ℝ4. __________ Translated from Sovremennaya Matematika. In this paper, using the generalized version of the theory of combinatorial harmonic maps, we give a criterion for a finitely generated group Γ to have the fixed-point property for a certain class of Hadamard spaces, and prove a fixed-point theorem for random-group actions on the same class of Hadamard spaces. We also study the existence of an equivariant energy-minimizing map from a Γ-space to the limit space of a sequence of Hadamard spaces with the isometric actions of a finitely generated group Γ. As an application, we present the existence of a constant which may be regarded as a Kazhdan constant for isometric discrete-group actions on a family of Hadamard spaces.   相似文献

Bernstein's inequality (1) will be extended to polynomial maps of arbitrary complex Banach spaces; cf. (3). We also give conditions for equality in (3). The extension of Bernstein's inequality to the case of polynomial maps of ℂ into ℂ was given byTung [4] and [5].  相似文献

In this paper the results of Dwyer and Zabrodsky [DZ] are extended by showing that ifL is a compact Lie group andG is either ap-group or a torus, then every mapf:BGBL is homotopic to one induced by a homomorphismφ :GL, and two such induced maps are homotopic if and only if the corresponding homomophisms are conjugate. Several other results related to maps between classifying spaces, completions, and fibrations are also deduced.  相似文献

It is proved that if a K?the space λ1(A) is distinguished and E is an arbitrary Fréchet space then every reflexive map T: λ1(A)→E (i.e., T maps bounded sets into relatively weakly compact ones) factorizes through a reflexive Fréchet space. An analogous result is proved for Montel maps (i.e., which map bounded sets into relatively compact ones). The result is a consequence of the fact proved also in this paper that, for a distinguished λ1(A) space, the spaces of reflexive maps R1(A), C(K)) and of Montel maps M1(A), C(K)) are the Mackey completions of the spaces of weakly compact and compact maps, respectively. Consequences for spaces of vector-valued (weakly) continuous functions are also obtained. Received: 24 November 1997 / Revised version: 14 May 1998  相似文献

The classification problem for holomorphic fibre bundles over Stein spaces was solved by H. GRAUERT. Along the same lines, the real coherent analytic case was considered by A. TOGNOLI and V. ANCONA. In this paper we propose a different approach, based on classifying spaces, in order to study the previous problem for real analytic fibre bundles over C -analytic subspaces of R m. So, let X be a C -analytic subspace of R m and G a compact Lie group. The main result is a characterization of the real analytic G-principal fibre bundles over X for which the analytic and topological equivalence coincide. Moreover, we prove that these bundles can be classified also by means of homotopy classes of analytic maps of X into classifying spaces. Among the others results, are worth recording: a relative approximation theorem of continuous cross sections by analytic ones, a theorem about the equivalence between analytical and topological homotopy between cross sections and a covering homotopy theorem.  相似文献

We study a problem in fusion systems designed to mimic, simplify, and generalize parts of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups. A 2-fusion system is a 2-group S with a family of injective homomorphisms on subgroups of S. Fusion systems arise in the study of modular representations and classifying spaces, and our results have potential ramifications beyond finite group theory. One problem is to determine S or, whenever possible, the entire 2-fusion system from the knowledge of certain subgroups and maps. We consider the case where S contains a subgroup and maps that arise in the Classification with standard component of type SL2(q).  相似文献
