Composite specimens were prepared using soda glass beads and a purified epoxy resin cured with 1,3-propylene diamine. Some beads were treated with a silane coupling agent. The dynamic mechanical properties of these specimens were measured in the temperature range ?190 to +180°C using a free-oscillation torsion pendulum. The dynamic mechanical relaxation spectrum showed no feature that could be attributed to the formation of a new interfacial phase and the torsional moduli were unaffected by the use of the coupling agent. Increasing the glass content of the specimens decreased the damping and increased the modulus. An attempt was made to predict the composite modulus using the Kerner equation. When the specimens were immersed in boiling water, two effects were noted. First, water was absorbed in the epoxy resin matrix and changes in the dynamic spectrum were observed. Second, in samples filled with untreated glass debonding occurred and the presence of free water at the interface was indicated by the appearance of a new peak near 0°C.  相似文献

A series of new modified epoxy resin (EP) cured products were prepared from epoxidized soybean oil and commercial epoxy resin, with methyl nadic anhydride as curing agent and 1-methylimidazole as promoting agent. The thermal properties of the resins were characterized by DMA and TG; DSC was used to determine the curing process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was utilized to investigate their molecular structures and scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the micro morphology of their impact fracture surfaces. Tensile and impact testing was employed to characterize the mechanical properties of the cured products. The combination of commercial EP with 20 wt% ESO resulted in a bioresin with the optimum set of properties: 130.5 °C T g, 396.9 °C T 50 %, 74.89 MPa tensile strength, and 48.86 kJ m?2 impact resistance.  相似文献

In this study, fibre modification technique is performed by coating nano titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles on flax fibres. The fibre surface is treated with silane coupling agents and coated with nanoparticles at weight percentage 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8% to develop chemical bonding at the fibre matrix interface. The improved interface is evaluated by performing Mode I, Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (ILFT), and Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The results indicate that the fibre modified composites with 0.4 wt % and 0.6 wt % coating shows 37% and 24% improvement in Mode I and Mode II ILFT values respectively. The storage modulus from the DMA analysis also exhibits improvement for the fibre modified composites. SEM analysis explains the changes in the fracture mechanism. FTIR analysis provides the details on the fibre coating by nanoparticles.  相似文献

The improvement of mechanical properties and toughness of nanoparticles for epoxy composites was mostly dependent on the disperse state of nanoparticles in epoxy matrices. When the content of nanoparticles was higher than a threshold value, it was easy to aggregate and then affect the improvement effect. Pickering emulsion was prepared using SiO2 nanoparticles as emulsifier and functional monomer as oil phase. The influence of Pickering emulsion on the curing process was investigated. The effect of Pickering emulsion on the mechanical properties, toughness, and glass transition temperature (Tg) was studied. Impact and tensile fracture surface were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results from differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), tensile, impact, and fracture toughness tests are provided. The results indicated that the introduction of Pickering emulsion can eliminate the residual stress and accelerate curing reaction. Epoxy composites were capable of increasing tensile strength by up to 29.9%, impact strength of three‐fold, fracture toughness of 35%, and Tg of 20.7°C in comparison with the reference sample. SEM images showed that SiO2 nanoparticles exhibit a good dispersion in epoxy matrix. The increases in mechanical properties, toughness, and Tg of epoxy composites were attributed to the “Second Phase Toughness” mechanism.  相似文献

A mesogenic‐type curing agent was synthesized to introduce a mesogenic group not only into epoxy resin backbones but also into the crosslink units. In the mesogenic curing agent system, the domain size became larger, and the network arrangement in each domain existed to a greater extent than that in a system cured with the ordinary diamine curing system according to the evidence from polarized optical micrographs and polarized Fourier transform infrared mapping measurements. Moreover, the fracture toughness of the system was considerably improved. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 2486–2494, 2006  相似文献

Diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends cured with 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) were prepared. The miscibility and phase behavior were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The study results indicate that the epoxy precursor (DGEBA)/PVAc blends are clearly miscible at the entire composition and theTg values experimentally obtained are in a good agreement with those predicted by Fox equation. Cured at elevated temperature, all the DDM-cured blends underwent phase separation and display two-phase morphology. When PVAc content is more than 10 wt%, the thermoplastics-modified resins began to show a co-continuous phase structure. It is the cocontinuous structure that leads to a significantly-improved toughness inK ic. Morphologic investigation of the surfaces of fracture mechanic measurement specimens indicates that the toughening effect of the thermoplastics-modified epoxy resins may arise mainly from the ductile yielding of PVAc.  相似文献

A biphenol‐type epoxy resin, which had a mesogenic group in the backbone moiety, was modified with carboxy‐terminated butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer (CTBN) as a reactive elastomer, and its fracture toughness was measured. With the addition of CTBN, the fracture toughness of the biphenol‐type epoxy resin significantly increased and became significantly higher than that of a bisphenol A‐type epoxy resin modified with CTBN. The network chain orientation in the cured biphenol‐type epoxy resin system was clearly observed during the fracture process with polarized microscopy Fourier transform infrared measurements, although such a phenomenon was not observed in the bisphenol A‐type epoxy resin system. The high toughness of the cured biphenol‐type system was clearly due to the consumption of the mechanical energy by a large deformation of the matrix resin due to the orientation of the network chains during the fracture process. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Recent advances in epoxy resins have been forward to achieving high mechanical performance, thermal stability, and flame retardancy. However, seeking sustainable bio-based epoxy precursors and avoiding introduction of additional flame-retardant agents are still of increasing demand. Here we report the synthesis of p-hydroxycinnamic acid-derived epoxy monomer (HCA-EP) via a simple one-step reaction, and the HCA-EP can be cured with 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) to prepare epoxy resins. Compared with the typical petroleum-based epoxy resin, bisphenol A epoxy resin, the HCA-EP-DDM shows a relatively high glass transition temperature (192.9 °C) and impressive mechanical properties (tensile strength of 98.3 MPa and flexural strength of 158.9 MPa). Furthermore, the HCA-EP-DDM passes the V-1 flammability rating in UL-94 test and presents the limiting oxygen index of 32.6%. Notably, its char yield is as high as 31.6% under N2, and the peak heat rate release is 60% lower than that of bisphenol A epoxy resin. Such findings provide a simple way of using p-hydroxycinnamic acid instead of bisphenol A to construct high-performance bio-based thermosets.  相似文献

The properties of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy resin toughened with poly(ether sulfone ether ketone) (PESEK) and poly(ether sulfone) (PES) polymers were investigated. PESEK was synthesised by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4,4’-difluorobenzophenone with dihydroxydiphenylsulfone using sulfolane as solvent and potassium carbonate as catalyst at 230 °C. The T g–composition behaviour of the homogeneous epoxy resin/PESEK blend was modelled using Fox, Gordon–Taylor and Kelley–Bueche equations. A single relaxation near the glass transition of epoxy resin was observed in all the blend systems. From dynamic mechanical analysis, the crosslink density of the blends was found to decrease with increase in the thermoplastic concentration. The storage modulus of the epoxy/PESEK blends was lower than that of neat resin, whilst it is higher for epoxy/PES blends up to glass transition temperature, thereafter it decreases. Scanning electron microscopic studies of the blends revealed a homogeneous morphology. The homogeneity of the blends was attributed to the similarity in chemical structure of the modifier and the cured epoxy network and due to the H-bonding interactions between the blend components. The fracture toughness of epoxy resin increased on blending with PESEK and PES. The increase in fracture toughness was due to the increase in ductility of the matrix. The thermal stability of the blends was comparable to that of neat epoxy resin.  相似文献

In this paper, a polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK)/epoxy composite was prepared by using PEEK microparticles as the reinforcement. The nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test was used to evaluate the curing reaction of PEEK/epoxy resin system. The curing kinetics of this system were examined utilizing nonisothermal kinetic analyses (Kissinger and Ozawa), isoconversional methods (Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose) and an autocatalytic reaction model. During these analyses, the kinetic parameters and models were obtained, the curing behavior of PEEK/epoxy resin system under dynamic conditions was predicted. The results show that isoconversional methods can adequately interpret the curing behavior of PEEK/epoxy resin system and that the theoretical DSC curves calculated by the autocatalytic reaction model are in good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, the tensile elongation at break, tensile strength, flexural strength, compression strength and compression modulus increased by 81.6%, 33.66%, 36.53%, 10.98% and 15.14%, respectively, when PEEK microparticles were added in epoxy resin composites.  相似文献

Epoxy/Al2O3 nanocomposites were prepared using an epoxy resin, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, and cured with a polyoxypropylene diamine (Jeffamine D‐400). Transmission electron microscopy and wide angle X‐ray diffraction were employed to reveal the morphology of epoxy/Al2O3 nanocomposites. Dynamic mechanical analysis results showed that the storage modulus and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of epoxy were improved. Tensile strength and Young's modulus also increased with increasing Al2O3 loading. Fracture toughness, as indicated by the stress intensity factor, KQ, was determined using single edge notch bending method, and 40% increase in KQ was observed with only 2 vol % Al2O3. Scanning electron microscopy study of fracture surface showed a rather smooth and flat morphology for neat epoxy. However, massive plastic deformation was observed for epoxy/Al2O3 nanocomposites, leading to the significant increase in fracture toughness. The influence of spherical Al2O3 nanoparticles on thermophysical properties of epoxy was discussed and compared with that of sheet‐like nanoclays. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The current research work presents a novel nonionic curing agent (AEDA) synthesized by utilizing ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE), 3,4-dimethoxyaniline (DI), and triethylenetetramine (TETA). Infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure of AEDA curing agent. Non-isothermal scanning calorimetry was used to determine the activation energy and curing conditions of epoxy resin in the curing process. An impact testing machine, a tensile testing machine and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to analyze the impact strength, tensile strength, bending strength, and micromorphology of the AEDA/E-51 system with different mass ratios. The results show that AEDA is an effective high-temperature curing agent. For the AEDA/E-51 system with the optimal mass ratio of 10:100, the best curing temperature is 92.15°C, and the post-curing temperature is 135.65°C. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy (Ea) of 1670 J/mol, the pre-exponential factor (A) of 3.7 × 10?4, and the reaction series (n) value of 0.76 are obtained for the AEDA/E-51 system. The impact strength of AEDA/E-51 epoxy resin polymer is 7.82 kJ/m2, tensile strength is 14.2 MPa, and bending strength is 18.92 MPa. The micromorphological results of the AEDA/E-51 system are consistent with the results of DSC test and mechanical properties test. Hence, this study provides theoretical support for the practical applications of AEDA as curing agent.  相似文献

Mechanical properties and tribological behavior of epoxy resin (EP) and EP nanocomposites containing different shape nanofillers, such as spherical silica (SiO2), layered organo‐modified montmorillonite (oMMT) and oMMT‐SiO2 composites, were investigated. The SiO2‐oMMT composites were prepared by in situ deposition method and coupling agent modification, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis shows that spherical SiO2 is self‐assembled on the surface of oMMT, which forms a novel layered‐spherical nanostructure. The mechanical properties test results show that oMMT obviously improves the strength of EP and SiO2 enhances its toughness, but oMMT‐SiO2 exhibits a synergistic effect on toughening and reinforcing EP simultaneously. A pin‐on‐disc rig was used to test friction and wear loss of pure EP and EP nanocomposites. The tribological test results prove that these nanofillers with different shapes play different roles for improving the wear resistance of EP nanocomposites. Morphologies of the worn surfaces were studied further by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, and it was clarified that the EP and EP nanocomposites undergo similar wear mechanisms. The epoxy resin containing a typical mesogenic group such as biphenol was cured with catechol novolak and aromatic diamines which have neighboring active hydrogens. In the biphenol-type epoxy resin cured with catechol novolak, 4,4′ diaminodiphenylmethane, and p-phenylenediamine (PPD), the glass-rubber transition almost disappeared, and thus a very high elastic modulus was obtained in the high temperature region. It is clear that the thermal motion of the network chains is significantly suppressed in these cured systems. In addition, in the PPD-cured system, a characteristic pattern like a schlieren texture was clearly observed under the crossed polarized optical microscope. Thus we conclude that the mesogenic group contained in the epoxy molecule is oriented in the networks when the mesogenic epoxy resin is cured with phenols and diamines which have neighboring active hydrogens. On the other hand, the biphenol-type resin cured with 3,3′,5,5′-tetraethyl-4,4′-diamino diphenylmethane (TEDDM) showed a well-defined glass-rubber transition and, thus, a low rubbery modulus. In this cured system, no characteristic pattern was observed under the crossed polarized light. These results show that the large branches, such as ethyl groups on the network chains, prevent the orientation of network chains which contain the mesogenic group. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The microstructure and mechanical properties of a block copolymer modified commercial thermoset plastic formed from a bisphenol-A based epoxy and a bio-derived amine hardener (Cardolite® NC-541LV) were investigated. A series of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(butylene oxide) (PEO-PBO) diblock copolymers was synthesized at fixed composition (31 ± 1% by volume PEO) and varying molecular weight expanding on a commercially available PEO-PBO compound marketed by the Dow Chemical Company under the trade name FORTEGRA™ 100; direct application of any of these block copolymers resulted in little improvement of the poor fracture toughness of the cured material. Modification of the resin formulation and curing protocol led to the development of well-defined spherical and branched worm-like micelles containing a PBO core and PEO corona in the cross-linked products as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. Maximum fracture toughness (K1c) and a ninefold increase in the critical strain energy release rate (G1c) over the unmodified neat epoxy was achieved at 5 wt % loading of intermediate molecular weight PEO-PBO, without measureable reductions in modulus, glass transition temperature or transparency. This study provides new strategies for engineering improved performance in thermoset materials using block copolymer additives that exhibit challenging mixing thermodynamic characteristics with the component monomers. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isosorbide based epoxy resin (IS-EPO) of epoxy number: 0.44 mol/100 g was synthesised in the one step reaction from 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-d-glucitol (isosorbide) and epichlorohydrin in the presence of concentrated aqueous NaOH. The product obtained was characterised by means of NMR, FT-IR and ESI MS spectroscopy. Compositions with typical hardeners were prepared and cured. The thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting materials were evaluated. Comparison with commercially available epoxy resin Epidian 5 shows relatively good mechanical performance of IS-EPO which makes isosorbide a promising candidate to replace bisphenol A (BPA).  相似文献

Positron annihilation lifetimes have been measured for epoxy resin/organic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites. Effects of different dispersion states of nano-layered OMMT on the positron annihilation parameters and the mechanical properties were studied. We found that the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) intensity decreased with increasing OMMT content, which indicated that the interaction between the host and nanofillers restrained the segmental motion, resulting in a decrease of the free volume. On the other hand, it is very interesting to observe a good correlation between the interfacial interaction and mechanical properties, suggesting that the dispersion states of OMMT and interfacial property between clay layers and matrix played an important role in determining the mechanical properties.  相似文献

Two kinds of micro/nano sized fibrils based on cellulose (MFC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used as reinforcer for epoxy resin (EP) with different contents in the range from 0 to 0.3 wt %. PVA nanofibers with diameter about 40–80 nm were fabricated by electrospinning technique. The analysis of mechanical properties showed that by both adding MFC and PVA to EP the fracture toughness was increased. The SEM results showed that micro/nano sized fibers dispersed throughout epoxy resin, prevented and changed the path of crack growth.  相似文献
