In this paper we consider the boundary blow-up problem Δ_pu = a(x)u^q in a smooth bounded domain Ω of , with u = +∞ on ∂Ω. Here is the well-known p-Laplacian operator with p > 1, q > p − 1, and a(x) is a nonnegative weight function which can be singular on ∂Ω. Our results include existence, uniqueness and exact boundary behavior of positive solutions.      

An Existence Result for a Problem with Critical Growth and Lack of Strict Convexity

We prove the existence of a nontrivial solution for a quasilinear elliptic equation involving a nonlinearity having critical growth and a convex principal part, which is not required to be strictly convex. Supported by MURST, Project “Variational Methods and Nonlinear Differential Equations”.     

Multiplicity results for a Neumann problem withp-Laplacian and non-smooth potential

A multiplicity theorem for a non-smooth homogeneous Neumann problem withp-Laplacian is established through a locally Lipschitz continuous version of the Brézis-Nirenberg critical point result in presence of splitting. Some special cases are then pointed out.     

On the Existence and Stability of Solutions for a System of Elliptic Equations

We show, using a dual variational method developed in the paper, the existence of solutions for a system of Dirichlet problems for partial differential equations involving p– and q–Laplacian. The stability of solutions and the existence of positive solutions is considered in the superlinear case.      

Unique solvability for a class of full non-Newtonian fluids of one dimension with vacuum

We prove the local existence and uniqueness of the strong solutions for a class of full non-Newtonian fluids in one space dimension with the hypotheses that the initial data are small in some sense and satisfy some compatibility conditions. The initial density need not be positive, which means that we allow the initial vacuum.

Estimates for Littlewood-Paley Functions and Extrapolation

We prove certain L ^p -estimates for Littlewood-Paley functions arising from rough kernels. The estimates are useful for extrapolation to prove L ^p -boundedness of the Littlewood-Paley functions under a sharp kernel condition.      

On the Cauchy Problem of Evolution p-Laplacian Equation with Nonlinear Gradient Term

The authors study the existence of solution to p-Laplacian equation with nonlinear forcing term under optimal assumptions on the initial data, which are assumed to be measures. The existence of local solution is obtained.     

Existence of Solutions for Second Order Partial Neutral Functional Differential Equations

We establish existence of mild solutions for a class of abstract second-order partial neutral functional differential equations with unbounded delay in a Banach space. The work of the second author was supported by FONDECYT-CONICYT, Grants 1050314 and 7050034.     

On a conjecture of Schmutz

In this work we discuss Schmutz’s conjecture that in dimension 2 to 8 the distinct norms that occur in the lattices with the best known sphere packings are strictly greater than those in any other lattice of the same covolume. We see that the ternary conjecture is not true. However, it seems that there is but one exception: one lattice, where for one length the conjecture fails. Quadrature Domains with Infinite Volume

We discuss quadrature domains for subharmonic functions and prove the existence of core quadrature domains for certain positive measures. The core quadrature domains are the smallest quadrature domains as measures and inherit good properties from quadrature domains with finite volume. We next discuss new balayage for the class of harmonic functions integrable in a neighborhood of ∞. We give several estimates of balayage measures. Existence of positive solutions for a singular <Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis>-Laplacian differential equation

In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of positive solutions for a singular p-Laplacian differential equation

On a Bernoulli-integrable magnetohydrodynamic system

A geometric procedure is used to isolate four Bernoulli integrals for a nonlinear, two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic system. The general solution of the latter may thereby be constructed.     

A p-adic analogue of a formula of Ramanujan

During his lifetime, Ramanujan provided many formulae relating binomial sums to special values of the Gamma function. Based on numerical computations, Van Hamme recently conjectured p-adic analogues to such formulae. Using a combination of ordinary and Gaussian hypergeometric series, we prove one of these conjectures. Received: 11 April 2008

Young measure flow as a model for damage

Models for hysteresis in continuum mechanics are studied that rely on a time-discretised quasi-static evolution of Young measures akin to a gradient flow. The main feature of this approach is that it allows for local, rather than global minimisation. In particular, the case of a non-coercive elastic energy density of Lennard-Jones type is investigated. The approach is used to describe the formation of damage in a material; existence results are proved, as well as several results highlighting the qualitative behaviour of solutions. Connections are made to recent variational models for fracture.      

Self-similar solutions of the magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer system for a non-dilatable fluid

A rigorous mathematical analysis is given for a magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer problem, which arises in the study of self-similar solutions of the two-dimensional steady laminar boundary layer flow for an incompressible electrically conducting non-dilatable fluid (i.e., a Newtonian fluid or a pseudo-plastic one) along an isolated surface in the presence of an exterior magnetic field orthogonal to the flow. For this problem, only a normal solution has the physical meaning. The uniqueness, existence, and nonexistence results for normal solutions are established.
