This paper addresses a generalization of the coupled-operations scheduling problem in the context of a flow shop environment. We consider the two-machine scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing the makespan. Each job consists of a coupled-operation to be processed first on the first machine and a single operation to be then processed on the second machine. A coupled-operation contains two operations separated by an exact time delay. The single operation can start on the second machine only when the coupled-operation on the first machine is completed. We prove the NP-completeness of two restricted versions of the general problem, whereas we also exhibit several other well solvable cases.

We consider in this paper the two-machine no-wait flowshop scheduling problem in which each machine may have an unavailable interval. We present a polynomial time approximation scheme for the problem when the unavailable interval is imposed on only one machine, or the unavailable intervals on the two machines overlap.  相似文献

We consider the two-machine flowshop problem with the objective of minimizing the total number of tardy jobs. Since this problem is known to be strongly NP-hard, algorithms are described for four polynomially solvable special cases. In addition, several heuristic algorithms are developed to find optimal or near optimal schedules. Results of computational tests in solving problems up to 60 jobs are reported and directions for future research are provided.  相似文献

This paper considers two scheduling problems for a two-machine flowshop where a single machine is followed by a batching machine. The first problem is that there is a transporter to carry the jobs between machines. The second problem is that there are deteriorating jobs to be processed on the single machine. For the first problem with minimizing the makespan, we formulate it as a mixed integer programming model and then prove that it is strongly NP-hard. A heuristic algorithm is proposed for solving this problem and its worst case performance is analyzed. The computational experiments are carried out and the numerical results show that the heuristic algorithm is effective. For the second problem, we derive the optimal algorithms with polynomial time for minimizing the makespan, the total completion time and the maximum lateness, respectively.  相似文献

We consider an order acceptance and scheduling model with machine availability constraints. The manufacturer (machine) is assumed to be available to process orders only within a number of discontinuous time intervals. To capture the real-life behavior of a typical manufacturer who has restrictions of time availability to process orders, our model allows the manufacturer to reject or outsource some of the orders. When an order is rejected or outsourced, an order-dependent cost of penalty will occur. The objective is to minimize the makespan of all accepted orders plus the total penalty of all rejected/outsourced orders. We study the approximability of the model and some of its important special cases.  相似文献

This paper considers the semi-resumable model of single machine scheduling with a non-availability period. The machine is not available for processing during a given time interval. A job cannot be completed before the non-availability period will have to partially restart after the machine has become available again. For the problem with objective of minimizing makespan, the tight worst-case ratio of algorithm LPT is given, and an FPTAS is also proposed. For the problem with objective of minimizing total weighted completion time, an approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than 2 is presented. Two special cases of the latter problem are also considered, and improved algorithms are given.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of scheduling n independent jobs on m identical machines incorporating machine availability and eligibility constraints while minimizing the makespan. Each machine is not continuously available at all times and each job can only be processed on specified machines. A network flow approach is used to formulate this scheduling problem into a series of maximum flow problems. We propose a polynomial time binary search algorithm to either verify the infeasibility of the problem or solve it optimally if a feasible schedule exists.  相似文献

We investigate the problems of scheduling n weighted jobs to m parallel machines with availability constraints. We consider two different models of availability constraints: the preventive model, in which the unavailability is due to preventive machine maintenance, and the fixed job model, in which the unavailability is due to a priori assignment of some of the n jobs to certain machines at certain times. Both models have applications such as turnaround scheduling or overlay computing. In both models, the objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time. We assume that m is a constant, and that the jobs are non-resumable.For the preventive model, it has been shown that there is no approximation algorithm if all machines have unavailable intervals even if wi=pi for all jobs. In this paper, we assume that there is one machine that is permanently available and that the processing time of each job is equal to its weight for all jobs. We develop the first polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) when there is a constant number of unavailable intervals. One main feature of our algorithm is that the classification of large and small jobs is with respect to each individual interval, and thus not fixed. This classification allows us (1) to enumerate the assignments of large jobs efficiently; and (2) to move small jobs around without increasing the objective value too much, and thus derive our PTAS. Next, we show that there is no fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) in this case unless P=NP.For the fixed job model, it has been shown that if job weights are arbitrary then there is no constant approximation for a single machine with 2 fixed jobs or for two machines with one fixed job on each machine, unless P=NP. In this paper, we assume that the weight of a job is the same as its processing time for all jobs. We show that the PTAS for the preventive model can be extended to solve this problem when the number of fixed jobs and the number of machines are both constants.  相似文献

The problem of makespan minimization for parallel machines scheduling with multiple planned nonavailability periods in the case of resumable jobs is considered. In the current state of the literature, there is a limited number of models and algorithms dealing with this problem and only for very small problem size, and nonavailability limited to some machines. The problem is first formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model and optimally solved using CPLEX for small to moderately large size problems with multiple availability constraints on all machines. An implicit enumeration algorithm using the lexicographic order is then designed to solve large-scale problems. Numerical results are obtained for several experiments and they show the validity and performance improvements procured by both the MILP model and the new enumeration algorithm.

In this paper, we consider a two-machine flowshop scheduling problem in which the waiting time of each job between the two machines cannot be greater than a certain time period. For the problem with the objective of minimizing makespan, we identify several dominance properties of the problem and develop a branch-and-bound (B&B) algorithm using the dominance properties. Computational tests are performed on randomly generated test problems for evaluation of performance of the B&B algorithm, and results show that the algorithm can solve problems with up to 150 jobs in a reasonable amount of CPU time.  相似文献

The paper considers a problem of scheduling n jobs in a two-machine open shop to minimise the makespan, provided that preemption is not allowed and the interstage transportation times are involved. In general, this problem is known to be NP-hard. We present a linear time algorithm that finds an optimal schedule if no transportation time exceeds the smallest of the processing times. We also describe an algorithm that creates a heuristic solution to the problem with job-independent transportation times. Our algorithm provides a worst-case performance ratio of 8/5 if the transportation time of a job depends on the assigned processing route. The ratio reduces to 3/2 if all transportation times are equal.  相似文献

Flowshop scheduling deals with processing a set of jobs through a set of machines, where all jobs have to pass among machines in the same order. With the exception of minimizing a makespan on two machines, almost all other flowshop problems in a general setup are known to be computationally intractable. In this paper we study special cases of flowshop defined by additional machine dominance constraints. These constraints impose certain relations among the job processing times on different machines and make the studied problems tractable.  相似文献

We study a two-machine flow shop scheduling problem with no-wait in process, in which one of the machines is subject to mandatory maintenance. The length of the maintenance period is defined by a non-decreasing function that depends on the starting time of that maintenance. The objective is to minimize the completion time of all activities. We present a polynomial-time approximation scheme for this problem. In this paper we provide a fairly complete complexity classification of various versions of the two-machine permutation flow shop scheduling problem to minimize the makespan in which some of the jobs have to be processed with no-wait in process. For some version, we offer a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme and a -approximation algorithm.  相似文献

We consider a two-machine flow shop problem in which each job is processed through an in-house system or outsourced to a subcontractor. A schedule is established for the in-house jobs, and performance is measured by the makespan. Jobs processed by subcontractors require paying an outsourcing cost. The objective is to minimize the sum of the makespan and total outsourcing costs. We show that the problem is NP-hard in the ordinary sense. We consider a special case in which each job has a processing requirement, and each machine a characteristic value. In this case, the time a job occupies a machine is equal to the job’s processing requirement plus a setup time equal to the characteristic value of that machine. We introduce some optimality conditions and present a polynomial-time algorithm to solve the special case.  相似文献

We study a single machine scheduling problem with availability constraints and sequence-dependent setup costs, with the aim of minimizing the makespan. To the authors’ knowledge, this problem has not been treated as such in the operations research literature. We derive in this paper a mixed integer programming model to deal with such scheduling problem. Computational tests showed that commercial solvers are capable of solving only small instances of the problem. Therefore, we propose two ways for reducing the execution time, namely a valid inequality that strengthen the linear relaxation and an efficient heuristic procedure that provides a starting feasible solution to the solver. A substantial gain is achieved both in terms of the linear programming relaxation bound and in terms of the time to obtain an integer optimum when we use the enhanced model in conjunction with providing to the solver the solution obtained by the proposed heuristic.  相似文献

This paper considers a two-stage flexible flowshop scheduling problem with no waiting time between two sequential operations of a job and no idle time between two consecutive processed jobs on machines of the second stage. We show its complexity and present a heuristic algorithm with asymptotically tight error bounds.  相似文献
