Multicomponent phase change microfibers, which can storage and release thermal energy in a stepwise manner, are firstly prepared through a facile one‐step multifluidic compound‐jet electrospinning with temperature control. The multiresponsive effect benefits from a special multichannel tubular microstructure that could controllably encapsulate different phase change materials into the channels independently. Aside from the fabrication of multicomponent phase change microfibers, the melt multifluidic compound‐jet electrospinning is promising for applications related to microencapsulation and multifunctional material fields.

Polycarbonate/polyethylene random block copolymers (RBCs) have been produced using olefin metathesis catalysis in a process termed segment interchange metathesis. An olefin metathesis catalyst tolerant of polar functionality was added to reagent polycarbonate and polyethylene polymers which contained internal unsaturated carbon–carbon bonds. Subsequent metathesis occurred, segmenting the reagent polymers, resulting in RBCs. The block copolymers self-assembled into microphase structures which persisted into the melt state as determined by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS).

Three‐pole electrospinning devices integrated with a blade‐cage collector were developed to fabricate well‐aligned nano‐fiberous membranes. The proposed three‐pole configuration with a channel electrode can be a powerful tool in aligning nano‐fibers with regular diameter because the generated electric field can be accurately controlled without severe fluctuation in comparison with other methods. The three‐pole electrospinning method is also valid for industrial mass production and accurate diameter control of the aligned nano‐fibers.

Two new “H” type of indole‐based chromophores were designed and successfully introduced to the polymeric system, the resultant polymers demonstrated enhanced NLO effects, good processability, thermal stability and nearly excellent transparency, indicating the advantages of “H” type chromophore moieties. And they could be promising candidates for the practical applications as new photonic materials.

Summary: The synthesis of well‐defined uniform and spherical sub‐micron polymeric spheres, specifically poly[styrene‐co‐(glycidyl methacrylate)] (PSGMA) with a uniform size distribution and surface chemical functionality, is described. It is shown that the surface can be modified with a multi‐amine functional polymer, polyethyleneimine (PEI), most likely through covalent bonding in addition to electrostatic attraction. The PEI acts both as a stabilizing agent and a complexation agent for the deposition of noble metal Ag nanoparticles.

Polymorphism control of PVDF has been realized through electrospinning. PVDF fibrous membranes with fiber diameter in the range of 100 nm to several micrometers were produced by electrospinning and the crystal phase of electrospun PVDF fibers can be adjusted at the same time. Through the control of electrospinning parameters such as the solvent, electrospinning temperature, feeding rate, and tip‐to‐collector distance, PVDF fibrous membranes containing mainly α‐ or β‐ or γ‐phase could be fabricated successfully.

Miniemulsion polymerization with an amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐polystyrene reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer agent as a surfactant and polymerization mediator is used to synthesize highly uniform nanocapsules. The nanocapsules with uniform structures, which include particle size, shell thickness, and shape symmetry, could be achieved by the post‐addition of a small amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Although the solid particles seem unavoidable, the ‘pure’ uniform core–shell structures are easily collected by centrifugation.

A long alkylsilyl group was attached to a thiophene ring system to overcome the instability of 2,5‐bis(halomethyl)thiophene monomers, by imparting steric hindrance and electronic delocalization. The resulting stable monomer could be used directly to prepare low‐band‐gap poly(thienylenevinylene) (1.57 eV) through heteroaromatic dehydrohalogenation polymerization.

The stability and reactivity of mono‐ and multi‐protonatred N‐substituted isatin derivatives were studied at PBE0/aug‐cc‐pvtz//PBE0/6‐31+G** level of theory in triflic acid (TFSA) solution. Calculations showed that the monocationic intermediates are the principal reactive species in the reaction of hydroxyalkylation of isatin derivatives in TFSA media. Electron‐withdrawing substituents on the nitrogen atom increase the reactivity of isatin‐containing electrophiles towards aromatic hydrocarbons, in accordance with their expected electronic influence. Steric factors also play an important role in the reactivity of isatin‐containing electrophiles, especially in the second reaction step, due to their more sterically hindered reactive center.

Nanofiber scaffolds of collagen have been fabricated via electrospinning using benign solvent systems as a replacement for 1,1,1,3,3,3 hexafluoro‐2‐propanol. Simple binary mixtures of phosphate‐buffered saline and ethanol have been found to be highly effective for electrospinning. FTIR spectra suggest that the triple helical structure of collagen was conserved after dissolution and electrospinning. Crosslinking of the electrospun collagen scaffolds was achieved with standard methods.

A novel approach has been explored to prepare brain‐like polyaniline (PANI) nanostructures with many convolutions (140–170 nm in average diameter) using aniline/citric acid (CA) salt as the template and chlorine gas as the oxidant by a gas/solid reaction for the first time. The method provided here differs significantly from the traditional one in which the polymerization of PANI is usually carried out in acidic solution.

The proteins of eggshell membranes, an industrial waste product, are dissolved by reductive cleavage with aqueous 3‐mercaptopropionic acid and acetic acid. The soluble protein preparation is cast into a thin film, and its bioactivity is investigated by cell culture.

Summary: An initiator for nitroxide mediated ‘living’ free radical polymerization was prepared with a fluorescent tag attached to the initiating alkyl radical terminus. This was used to synthesize amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐polystyrene diblock copolymers, which self assembled in a tetrahydrofuran/buffer solution to form structures that are visible by fluorescence.

The copolymerization system of oxetane and tetrahydropyran is reinterpreted with the aid of computer simulations. The original claim that this system is a “living” and/or controlled pseudoperiodic copolymerization 1 is not confirmed by the simulation results. It is suggested that the formation of branched oxonium cations and the statistical nature of THP incorporation are the reasons for the observed discrepancies between the simulation results and experimental data.

Supramolecular complexes of a poly(tert‐butoxystyrene)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) triblock copolymers and less than stoichiometric amounts of pentadecylphenol (PDP) are shown to self‐assemble into a core–shell gyroid morphology with the core channels formed by the hydrogen‐bonded P4VP(PDP)complexes. After structure formation, PDP was removed using a simple washing procedure, resulting in well‐ordered nanoporous films that were used as templates for nickel plating.

Carbon nanotubes typically require the use of a dispersing or stabilizing agent to prevent significant aggregation during incorporation into a polymer matrix. These additives must be strongly associated, either covalently or physically, to achieve their purpose. In this study, multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were dispersed into an epoxy matrix using polyethylenimine (PEI) as a dispersant that was either covalently attached to the nanotubes or physically mixed to result in only noncovalent interaction. Epoxy composites containing covalently modified MWNTs exhibited greater storage modulus and reduced electrical conductivity.
