This paper highlights the powerful combination of reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization and various click/coupling chemistries. This is not an exhaustive review but rather an overview demonstrating the impressive possibilities that the “marriage” of these two synthetic approaches offers in modern macromolecular design and synthesis.

Summary: A new strategy was developed to prepare disorderly exfoliated nanocomposites, in which a soft siloxane surfactant with a weight‐average molecular weight ( ) of 1 900 was adopted to modify the clay. The modified clay slurry was then mixed with silicone rubber by hand, and exfoliation was achieved. The proposed mechanism thereof was verified by TEM and XRD. The physical entanglement of the soft siloxane surfactant plays a vital role in the diffusion and intercalation of the matrix molecules during the compounding of the slurry‐polymer mixture. This simple method is applicable to other silicone‐based materials reinforced by clay.

A systematic investigation into the surface properties of siloxane rubber/carbon black (CB) nanocomposites has been performed, using an automated scanning probe microscope. In this way the influence of CB concentration and curing rate of the siloxane rubber matrix on roughness and conductivity of the composites was studied. Decreasing the curing rate while keeping the CB concentration resulted in a decrease in both roughness and surface conductivity, which can be explained by an additional siloxane‐rubber layer formed during curing.

A triblock amphiphilic macrocycle consisting of a macrocyclic aromatic segment, a hydrophilic oligo(ethylene oxide) branch, and a hydrophobic alkyl dendron is successfully synthesized and characterized. The resulting cyclic amphiphile is observed to self‐assemble into hollow double‐layered capsules in aqueous solution, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy investigations. The capsules are able to encapsulate hydrophobic guest molecules through aromatic interactions with high stability.

Summary: Nanometer scale morphological order of macroscopically amorphous polyesters, obtained from the melt at moderate cooling rates, was observed in the past. The effect of such order on mechanical properties of a PET/PEN blend, evaluated by AFM nanoindentations, is reported in this study. Results show that nanoindentations conducted at relatively high load, with penetration depths of the order of 100 nm, confirm the information obtained from mechanical tests at micrometer scale, i.e., microhardness. On the other hand, true nanometer scale indentations (<40 nm) are seen to discriminate between the mechanical properties of the nanophases formed during solidification.

A reverse‐barrier technique is used to enable the treatment of electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofibrous membranes with supercritical carbon dioxide. The treatment induces the formation of nanopores and extended‐chain β crystallites of small lateral dimensions in the nanofibers. It also creates interfiber junctions, resulting in a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties of the membranes. The treated membranes are able to retain their shape very well after loading with an ionic liquid (IL). The ionic conductivity of the IL‐loaded membrane is very close to that of the neat IL.

Summary: We describe an interesting approach to the fabrication of wettability gradients from hydrophobicity to superhydrophobicity in low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) films by first forming high porosity surfaces and placing the specimens onto linear temperature gradients. While the polymer chosen for the study is non‐polar, its microporous layer provides sufficient superhydrophobicity. Lateral gradient heating of the layer results in partial melting of the polymer and correspondingly decreases porosity thus decreasing hydrophobicity.

Summary: A new computational algorithm for dynamic lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the associative behavior of heteroarm copolymers in selective solvents was developed and optimized for efficient and relatively fast simulation studies. The algorithm is based on the Siepmann and Frenkel variant of the bias self‐avoiding walk procedure. Simultaneously, a new criterion for recognition of an associate was proposed. The first results on the micellization of heteroarm star copolymers are presented.

The catalytic properties of bis(phenoxy‐imine) Zr and Hf complexes incorporating perfluorophenyl groups with methylaluminoxane were investigated. The fluorinated complexes produced far higher‐molecular‐weight polyethylenes and ethylene/propylene copolymers with increased activities compared with the non‐fluorinated congeners. Moreover, the fluorinated complexes displayed a higher incorporation ability for propylene.

New multifunctional copoly(2‐oxazoline) nanoparticles were prepared for cell studies. The polymer contains double‐bond side chains as potential reaction sites for “thio”‐click reactions as well as a fluorescein label covalently bound to the polymer backbone. Using the nanoprecipitation technique, spherical nanoparticles of 200–800 nm were obtained. Confocal laser scanning microscopy measurements revealed the cellular uptake of the nanoparticles.

Summary: Combinatorial exploration of material compositions and associated informatics having influenced medicinal chemistry are now transforming the material sciences. In ceramic science, both thin and thick film combinatorial techniques are available. Ink‐jet printing provides a pathway to the latter. Mixing behind the nozzle and in front of the nozzle in well plates is described here. Such instruments are described and compared, and compositional calibration details for both are given.

The synthesis of poly(N‐vinylcarbazole)‐based block copolymers functionalized with rhenium diimine complexes or pendant terpyridine ligands is reported. The copolymers are synthesized by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and they exhibit interesting morphological properties as a result of the phase separation between different blocks. The rhenium complex polymer block may function as a photosensitizer, while the terpyridine‐containing polymer block can be used as the template for nanofabrication by selective deposition of zinc complexes.

Based on their rigid‐rod structure all‐conjugated, rod‐rod block copolymers show a preferred tendency to self‐assemble into low‐curvature vesicular or lamellar nanostructures independent from their specific chemical structure and composition. This unique and attractive behaviour is clearly illustrated in a few examples of such all‐conjugated block copolymers. The resulting nanostructured heteromaterials may find applications in electronic devices or artificial membranes.
