Summary: A novel method for the encapsulation of biomacromolecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins, into polyelectrolyte microcapsules is described. Fluorescence‐labelled double‐stranded DNA and human serum albumin (HSA) are used as model substances for encapsulation in hollow microcapsules templated on human erythrocytes. The encapsulation procedure involves an intermediate drying step. The accumulation of DNA and HSA in the capsules is observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy, UV spectroscopy, and fluorimetry. The mechanism of encapsulation is discussed.

We report a new type of step‐growth radical addition‐coupling polymerization (RACP) involving consecutive addition of carbon‐centered radical derived from α,α′‐dibromo dibasic ester to NO double bond of C‐nitroso compound followed by cross‐coupling of carbon‐centered radical and in situ formed nitroxyl radical, which produces alternating copolymers with high molecular weight and unimodal molecular weight distribution from saturated and unsaturated monomers.

Summary: Single polyelectrolyte component microcapsules and multilayers, exemplified by poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), have been prepared using a method of glutaraldehyde (GA)‐mediated covalent layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly. The GA cross‐linking of the adsorbed PAH results in surfaces covered by reactive aldehyde groups, which can then react with PAH to result in another layer of covalently linked PAH. The repeated assembly of single polyelectrolyte in an LbL manner can be thus achieved. The PAH multilayers can grow linearly along with the layer number, and their thickness can be controlled at the nanometer scale, as verified by UV‐vis absorption spectrometry and ellipsometry. Single polyelectrolyte microcapsules are obtained after removal of the template cores at low pH. The morphology and integrity are confirmed by scanning force microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Alginate‐chitosan microcapsules to control the release of Tramadol‐HCl were prepared using two different methods. In the two‐stage procedure (Variant I) alginate was first pumped into a CaCl2/NaCl solution and then transferred into a chitosan solution. In the one‐stage procedure (Variant II) alginate was directly pumped into a chitosan/CaCl2 solution, and different behavior could be noted in each case. The microcapsules were spherical in both variants and they swelled to a greater extent in a basic medium as compared to an acid one. The drug release profile of Tramadol from microcapsules in simulated gastric fluid and simulated intestinal fluid was also studied. The maximum release of Tramadol at 24 h was 64% and 86% for Variant I and II, respectively, in simulated intestinal fluid. Release was adjusted using the power law of the semi‐empirical Peppas equation in order to gain information about the release mechanism. In both cases the values of the exponent were found to be between 0.53 and 0.84 for swellable microcapsules in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids, respectively, indicating anomalous drug transport for both variants. The good results obtained with alginate‐chitosan microcapsules are comparable to those of the best products so far described in the scientific bibliography and in addition, chitosan is useful in pharmacy.

A novel chlorotitanium calix[4]arene complex was synthesized and tested, without activator, as catalyst for the polymerization of L ‐ and rac‐lactide under solvent‐free conditions. The catalyst displayed high activity, which depended on the monomer‐to‐catalyst molar ratio, and led to highly isotactic PLLA. Despite concomitant transesterification during the polymerization, polylactide formation was well‐controlled, the molar mass distribution indexes remaining in the restricted range of 1.2–1.4.

A versatile approach to fabricate monodisperse poly[styrene‐co‐(divinyl benzene)] (PS‐co‐DVB) microcapsules that contain a single gold nanoparticle (AuNP) has been demonstrated. Using the PS‐co‐DVB microcapsule as a microreactor, aqueous HAuCl4 and NaBH4 solutions are subsequently infiltrated. The size of the resulting AuNP inside of the PS‐co‐DVB microcapsules is easily tunable by controlling the repeated infiltration cycles of aqueous HAuCl4 and NaBH4. PS‐co‐DVB microcapsules that contain a single silver and palladium nanoparticle are also obtained by following a similar protocol.

A novel poly‐L ‐arginine group microcapsule was produced to investigate its nutritional function and pharmacological efficacy. The molecular weight of poly‐L ‐arginine is an important parameter for its membrane strength, but does not obviously affect its release property. Thus, poly‐L ‐arginine can be used as a kind of new membrane material in microcapsules, and it is expected to be used as an therapeutic and biodegradable drug carrier.

Summary: It has been shown that stable aqueous dispersions of nanoparticles of the rigid‐rod ladder‐type polymer poly(benzo‐bisimidazobenzo‐phenanthroline) (BBL) can be prepared in order to facilitate BBL processing. The obtained dispersions have a controllable particle size in the range between 50 and 150 nm and, consequently, the deposition of layers by spin‐coating or drop‐casting is realized. The resultant films exhibit a particulate structure and their morphology has been characterized by means of SEM and AFM. Upon investigation of the BBL dispersions in organic field‐effect transistors an ambipolar charge carrier transport has been observed, which presumably is related to the presence of mobile ions.

The Ti complexes containing tridentate [ONSR] (R = Me, iPr) ligands with alkylthio sidearms were prepared. The methylthio ether complex (R = Me shown in the Scheme) exhibits an excellent activity for copolymerization of ethylene with norbornene upon activation with MMAO, which is 10 times more active than the corresponding phenylthio one (R = Ph).

This study reports a spontaneous selective localization of molecules in crosslinked particles during electrospraying and electrospinning polymer solutions containing the particles. It provides a facile way of preparing microcapsules and fibers with controlled release. The dye molecules were phase separated from the crystalline polymer matrix during the electrohydrodynamic process and moved to the solvent‐rich crosslinked particles. The position of the particles in the microcapsules and fibers could be controlled by adjusting compatibility of the particles with the matrix polymer. The microcapsules and fibers did not show the initial burst release of the molecules and gave considerably prolonged release behavior.

Low‐cost, responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)/polystyrene composite films were prepared by a facile electrospinning technique. The surface structures and wettabilities of the composite films are tunable by simply controlling the concentration of polymer. With a proper proportion of each polymer, the wettability of the surface can be switched between superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity when the temperature is changed from 20 °C to 50 °C. The combination of a stimuli‐responsive polymer with micro/nanostructures on the surface of the composite film contributes to this unique surface property.

Two porphyrin‐cored thiophene dendrimers T(3T)P and T(7T)P have been successfully synthesized and characterized by UV‐vis and fluorescence measurements. The self‐assembly of these two water‐insoluble free base porphyrins to form both intrinsic H‐ and J‐aggregates has been reported for the first time. This intrinsic behavior is in contrast to the use of surfactants, dyes, and metal ions to induce aggregation behavior on most porphyrin systems. This work emphasizes the importance of controlling the size, solvent, and extent of conjugation of polythiophene dendron groups in porphyrin systems. These materials may yet be applied to polythiophene or porphyrin blend system in energy conversion devices with the light‐harvesting properties of the polythiophene dendrons.

A new versatile synthesis strategy for macromonomers has been developed that uses the living ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with commercial Grubbs first generation ruthenium initiators. Homopolymers as well as diblock copolymers were end‐functionalized with norbornene derivatives to serve as macromonomers. The graft copolymerization of the macromonomers was also carried out employing ROMP. Well‐defined and highly functional graft copolymers are accessible by this new synthetic route.
