Membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment must operate for long periods without chemical cleaning. This paper investigates the critical flux concept introduced by Field et al. as a means for achieving this goal. Experiments were conducted on a membrane bioreactor containing 600 l of activated sludge, equipped with a 0.25 m2 ceramic membrane and located in Compiegne wastewater treatment plant. Hydraulic retention time was set at 24 h and sludge retention time at 60 days, so that suspended solids concentration stabilises at 10 g/l. We conducted two series of tests: at fixed transmembrane pressure (TMP) and at fixed permeate flux, set by a volumetric pump on the permeate. In both cases, velocity was varied from 1 to 5 m/s. In fixed flux tests, the flux was increased by 10 l/h m2 increments and the TMP was observed to rise moderately first and then stabilise in about 15 min until a critical value of the flux is reached. Above this critical flux, the TMP rises rapidly and does not stabilise, as in dead-end filtration. The critical flux was found to increase approximately linearly with velocity, reaching about 115 l/h m2 at 4 m/s. These data were reproducible at various dates between 30 and 120 days of continuous operation of the bioreactor and permit to know at which flux a membrane bioreactor must be operated. Comparison of constant pressure and constant flux tests under same conditions showed that the critical flux is almost identical to the limiting or pressure independent flux obtained in constant pressure. More generally, constant flux procedure below the critical flux avoids overfouling of the membrane in the initial stage and is more advantageous for membrane bioreactor operation.  相似文献

The effects of yeast cells on membrane fouling by a protein mixture were studied in dead-end filtration. A 0.2 μm cellulose acetate membrane was used with a 1 g/l protein mixture consisting of equal amounts of bovine serum albumin, lysozyme, and ovalbumin. Yeast cells were used either in suspension or as preformed yeast cakes on top of the membrane. A small concentration of 0.022 g/l yeast cells in suspension enhanced the permeate flux and maintained protein transmission at nearly 100%, compared with a 60% reduction in the protein concentration in the permeate obtained after 3 h for the protein mixture filtered alone. Higher suspended yeast concentrations of 0.043 and 0.18 g/l resulted in lower fluxes and intermediate values for the protein transmission. For the three different thicknesses of preformed yeast cakes studied (0.025, 0.05, and 0.10 cm), the cake with intermediate thickness resulted in protein transmission of nearly 100% and the highest permeate flux. The thinner yeast cake resulted in a lower permeate flux, but it maintained protein transmission at nearly 100%, whereas the thicker cake resulted in a reduction in both permeate flux and protein transmission. The mechanism proposed to explain the results is based on the formation of a secondary membrane by the yeast cells on top of the original membrane. This secondary membrane entraps protein aggregates, which would otherwise cause membrane fouling and reductions in permeate flux and protein transmission.  相似文献

Several factors affecting microfiltration membrane fouling and cleaning, including backpulsing, crossflushing, backwashing, particle size, membrane surface chemistry, and ionic strength, were investigated with suspensions of latex beads. Approximately two-fold permeate volume enhancements over 1 h of filtration were obtained by using water or gas backpulsing, and 50% enhancement was obtained with crossflushing, for filtration of 1.0 μm diameter carboxylate modified latex (CML) particles using unmodified polypropylene (PP) membranes of 0.3 μm nominal pore diameter. When 0.2 μm diameter CML particles or mixtures of 1.0 and 0.2 μm CML particles were used, however, the average flux decreased 60% compared with using 1.0 μm CML particles for experiments with or without backpulsing.PP membranes were rendered hydrophilic with neutral or positively on negatively charged surfaces by grafting monomers of poly(ethylene glycol 200) monomethacrylate (PEG200MA), dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), or acrylic acid (AA), respectively, to the base PP membranes. Filtration experiments show that fouling is not strongly dependent on membrane surface chemistry for filtration of 1.0 μm CML particles without backpulsing. With backpulsing, however, a 10% increase and a 20% decrease of permeate volumes collected in 1 h were observed when the CML particles and the membranes had like charges and opposite charges, respectively, compared to the permeate collected with the unmodified membrane. Using the PP membranes modified with AA, permeate volumes with backpulsing decreased 30 and 40% when NaCl concentrations of 0.01 and 0.1 M, respectively, were added to the feed. However, the permeate volumes did not vary significantly with changing ionic strength for filtration without backpulsing.  相似文献

Transmembrane pressure pulsing (TPP) uses the frequent and periodic reversal of the transmembrane pressure to reduce flux resistances due to membrane fouling. This study examined the effect of TPP on the microfiltration of simulated drinking water (hydrated aluminum silicate solution). Solutions of kaolin clay (0.1–4.0 μm particles, at an approximate concentration of 500 mg l−1 and a turbidity of 402±17 NTU, 0.5 mM CaCl, 2.0 mM NaHCO3, pH 7.5–7.8) were microfiltered with polyethersulfone (PES) 0.16 μm microfiltration membranes at an operating pressure of 30 kPa. Crossflow shear rates were varied between 165 and 1490 s−1. Pulse frequency was varied between 0.3×10−2 and 2 Hz, and pulse amplitude was varied between −3 and −16.5 kPa. It was found that the crossflow shear rates did not significantly effect the non-pulsed permeate flux. An optimum pulse amplitude of about 10 kPa was necessary to maximize the permeate flux for pulse frequencies between 0.3×10−2 and 2.0 Hz. To insure a reduced solute flux, pulse frequencies less than 0.1 Hz were required. These results indicate that TPP can significantly reduce membrane fouling by inorganic particulate materials that are potentially important constituents of natural waters without negatively impacting the rejection of sub-micron particles due to interactions with material accumulated on the membrane.  相似文献

We investigated the efficiency of pervaporation separation of methanol/methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE) mixture through chitosan composite membrane modified with sulfuric acid and four surfactants. Effects of feed concentration, temperature, crosslinking degree and type of surfactants were studied. The chitosan composite membrane modified with sulfuric acid showed the pervaporation performance of over 70 wt% methanol in the permeate and flux of 100 g/m2 h measured at 25°C. At 50°C, the separation factor decreased while the flux increased exceeding 300 g/m2 h. For the membrane complexed with surfactants, the permeate showed 98.3 wt% methanol concentration and 470 g/m2 h of permeate flux at 25°C. With increasing operating temperature, the permeate flux remarkably increased to 1170 g/m2 h and the permeate showed 97.8 wt% methanol concentrations.  相似文献

This work aims to develop a new mineral porous tubular membrane based on mineral coal fly ash. Finely ground mineral coal powder was calcinated at 700 °C for about 3 h. The elaboration of the mesoporous layer was performed by the slip casting method using a suspension made of the mixture of fly ash powder, water and PVA. The obtained membrane was submitted to a thermal treatment which consists in drying at room temperature for 24 h then a sintering at 800 °C. SEM photographs indicated that the membrane surface was homogeneous and did not present any macro defects (cracks, etc.). The average pore diameter of the active layer was 0.25 μm and the thickness was around 20 μm. The membrane permeability was 475 l/h m2 bar.This membrane was applied to the treatment of the dying effluents generated by the washing baths in the textile industry. The performances in term of permeate flux and efficiency were determined and compared to those obtained using a commercial alumina microfiltration membrane. Almost the same stabilised permeate flux was obtained (about 100 l/h m2). The quality of permeate was almost the same with the two membranes: the COD and color removal was 75% and 90%, respectively.  相似文献

This study investigated the ultrafiltration of soybean oil/hexane extract (miscella) using porous ceramic membrane. The evaporation energy can be saved in the soybean oil production by pre-separating a portion of hexane through the ceramic membrane. Raw soybean oil/hexane extract with 33 wt% of oil was used without pretreatment. A cross-flow ultrafiltration was performed using an anodisc membrane with a pore diameter of 0.02 μm and thickness of ∼1 μm. The concentrations of oil/hexane mixture were measured by UV adsorption at a wavelength of 458 nm. The separation mechanism was suggested to be the hindrance diffusion of soybean oil. Agitation in the feed side significantly increased the rejection of soybean oil. A small stage cut could also yield a higher rejection. Above observations were attributed to the reduction of concentration polarization by increasing the shear rate and small permeate flux, respectively. The optimum separation was achieved under the conditions of 4 kg/cm2 transmembrane pressure, 0.04 stage cut and 120 rpm agitation speed. The concentration of soybean oil decreased from 33 wt% of feed to 27 wt% in permeate, that is, near 20% rejection. A gel-layer polarization model was proposed to estimate the gel concentration and thickness. The gel concentration was found 43–53 wt%. Agitating feed side reduced gel thickness, thus enhanced the rejection and permeate flux.  相似文献

A porous hollow-fiber membrane containing an iminodiethanol (IDE) group as the chelate-forming group was applied to the recovery of antimony in the permeation mode. An antimony solution was forced to permeate through the pores of the chelating porous hollow-fiber membrane, driven by a transmembrane pressure. The membrane with a thickness of 0.7 mm and a porosity of 70% had an iminodiethanol group of 1.6 mol/kg of the membrane and a water flux of 0.95 m/h at 0.1 MPa and 298 K. The breakthrough curves of antimony overlapped irrespective of the permeation rate of the antimony solution ranging from 2 to 20 ml/min, i.e. the residence time across the membrane thickness ranging from 3.4 to 0.34 s, because of negligible diffusional mass-transfer resistance of the ionic species of antimony to the iminodiethanol group. At antimony concentrations below 10 mg/l (pH 4.0), a linear adsorption isotherm was obtained. The adsorbed antimony was quantitatively eluted by permeation of 2 M hydrochloric acid through the pores of the membrane.  相似文献

The ultrafiltration of two types of surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, anionic) and Tergitol NP-9 (nonylphenol polyethylene glycol ether, nonionic), using a 20 nm ZrO2 tubular membrane was investigated. The influence of crossflow velocity, temperature, pressure, and surfactant concentration on the permeate flux, close to and above the critical micelle concentration (CMC), is reported. Permeate flux and surfactant retention were measured in order to evaluate concentration polarization and fouling phenomena, and also the variation of these parameters due to surfactant/membrane interactions. High surfactant retentions (60–70%) were achieved depending on the feed concentration.  相似文献

A pumped bed-membrane bioreactor (PB-MBR) combining powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption with bacterial degradation was studied for the purification of tap water, spiked with 2 mg/l of phenanthrene, to sub-ppm levels. The feedwater was supplemented with nitrogen and phosphorous to reach a COD:N:P ratio of 100:10:1. PAC concentration was maintained at 5 g/l. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) flat-sheet membranes of 250 and 1500 kDa MWCO were tested. The overall efficiency during long term operation was tested at different hydraulic conditions with intermittent biosolids wastage and high frequency-chemical cleaning (every 2–3 days) or without chemical cleaning and without sludge removal. With intermittent PAC dosage-high frequency chemical cleaning steady fluxes of 150–200 l/m2 h were maintained. With no chemical cleaning-no solids wastage, steady fluxes of 22.5±3.8 and 28.8±4.8 l/m2 h were achieved for the 250 and 1500 kDa membranes, respectively. An almost complete removal of phenanthrene was observed in all cases, regardless the type of membrane, operating protocols or hydraulic conditions applied (permeate concentration was consistently below 5 μg/l). The relatively high permeate fluxes and constant filterability observed are attributed to the turbulent flow regime and high PAC-slurry recirculation ratio generated.  相似文献

The composite membranes with polyvinylalcohol (PVA) as separating layer material and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) or cellulose acetate (CA) as supporting layer material were prepared for separating methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE)/MeOH mixture by pervaporation (PV). The results showed that PV performance of the composite membrane with PVA membrane as separating layer was superior to that with CA membrane as separating layer, and the PV performance of PVA/CA composite membrane with CA membrane as supporting layer was better. The parameters to prepare the composite membrane remarkably affected PV performance of the composite membrane. The permeate flux of both composite membranes of PVA/PAN and PVA/CA was over 400 g/m2 h, and the concentration of MeOH in the permeate reached over 99.9 wt.% for separating MTBE/MeOH mixture.  相似文献

Fouling in the low-pressure membrane filtration of secondary effluent for water reuse can be severe due to the complex nature of the components in the water. Pre-filtration, coagulation and anion exchange resin were investigated as pre-treatments for reducing fouling of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in the treatment of activated sludge-lagoon effluent. The key fouling components were determined using several analytical techniques to detect differences in the organic components between the feed and permeate.Pre-filtration (1.5 μm) enhanced the permeate flux for MF by removing particulates, but had little effect for UF. Marked flux improvement was obtained by coagulation pre-treatment at 5 mg L−1 Al3+ with internal membrane fouling being substantially alleviated. Anion exchange resin removed >50% of effluent organic matter but did not improve the flux or reduce irreversible membrane fouling. These results, together with detailed organic compositional analyses, showed that the very high-molecular weight organic materials (40–70 kDa) comprised of hydrophilic components such as soluble microbial products, and protein-like extracellular matter were the major cause of membrane fouling.  相似文献

We have investigated the consequences due to the changes in hydrodynamics above the membrane surface brought about by an oscillatory flow in the crossflow microfiltration (CFMF) of beer on a tubular mineral membrane. Experimental results in oscillatory flow filtration were analysed in terms of membrane resistance to filtration and energy consumption and compared with steady flow filtration. Two types of beers were used: a clarified beer composed of colloids and macromolecular material and a rough beer containing in addition yeast cells. Oscillatory flow was found to decrease membrane fouling resistance (up to 100%) in rough beer filtration in the presence of a yeast cell cake layer on the membrane surface, whereas it has no effect in clarified beer filtration in the presence of membrane clogging. The detrimental effect of transmembrane pressure on membrane resistance (at ΔP>1 bar) has been emphasized in both oscillatory and steady flows. The time-average hydraulic power dissipated by friction in the filtration module, in relation with the absolute value of the time-average flow rate in oscillatory flow, was found to be systematically higher than for steady flow filtration. However, the hydraulic energy per unit volume of permeate in the microfiltration of rough beer under oscillatory flow was close to that in steady flow at a time-average tangential velocity of 3 m/s. By considering the specific energy (per m3 of permeate) related to the kinetic energy applied to fluid in oscillatory and steady flow modes, the system by gas compression in oscillatory flow led to a reduction of specific energy ranging from 15% to 40%. Finally the ratio of hydraulic power consumed in oscillatory and steady flow was compared with a theoretical calculation based on the assumption that the oscillating flow regime is quasi-steady.  相似文献

Modification of poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) by sulfonation with concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid was carried out in order to prepare thermally stable polymers as membrane materials having increased hydrophilicity and potentially improved fouling-resistance. The sulfonated poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone)s (SPPESK) were fabricated into ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) asymmetric membranes. The effects of SPPESK concentration and the type and concentration of additives in the casting solution on membrane permeation flux and rejection were evaluated by using an orthogonal array experimental design in the separation of polyethyleneglycol (PEG12000 and PEG2000) and Clayton Yellow (CY, MW 695). One UF membrane formulation type had a 98% rejection rate for PEG12000 and a high pure water flux of 867 kg m−2 h−1. All the NF membranes made in the present study had rejections of ≥96%, and one had a high water flux of 160 kg m−2 h−1. Several of the NF membrane formulation types had ∼90% rejection for CY. When the membranes were operated at higher temperatures (80°C), the rejection rates declined slightly and pure water flux was increased more than two-fold. Rejection and flux values returned to previous values when the membranes were operated at room temperature again. Mono- and divalent salt rejections and fluxes were studied on an additional NF membrane set.  相似文献

Both differential and integral UF-membrane reactors were tested for the bioconversion of acrylonitrile into acrylamide. Use was made of the commercially available flat membrane cell Amicon Mod.52 and the UF-membranes FS81PP, GR81PP, and YM100. The enzymatic reaction was catalyzed by the nitrile hydratase (NHase) present in resting cells of Brevibacterium imperialis CBS 489-74. The system was operated at 4°C and 10°C. Acrylonitrile concentration ranged from 50 to 500 mM. The membrane resistance to chemicals was complete at acrylonitrile and acrylamide concentrations up to 800 mM and 2 M, respectively. No rejection of solute was determined. Membranes totally retained the resting cells and no fouling was observed working with 2 and 16 mg of biocatalyst in stirred systems. Membrane compaction was apparently responsible for roughly 35% flux loss during the first 3–4 h of operation. The laboratory scale membrane bioreactor, continuously operating, allowed to show the dependence of enzyme deactivation on acrylonitrile concentration and process time. Substrate concentration higher than 100 mM were highly detrimental for NHase stability. The acrylamide yield reached in the multi-cycle process operating with 5.6 g/l of resting cells was 93.7% and the product concentration during roughly 450 h of bioconversion attained 8.3% (w/v). Decay of specific membrane flux was 98% of the initial value.  相似文献

The main problem in treating oil/water emulsion from car wash waste-water by ultrafiltration (UF) is fouling caused by oil adsorption on the membrane surface and internal pore walls. This study demonstrates that the addition of bentonite clay can reduce the adsorption layer on cellulose acetate UF membrane, resulting in a reduction of total membrane resistance (Rt). Experiments were conducted to identify and describe three possible mechanisms: (i) bulk oil emulsion concentration reduction; (ii) particle aggregation and (iii) detachment of the adsorbed gel layer by shear force. Adsorption of oil emulsion by bentonite can lead to a significant reduction of bulk oil emulsion concentration, one of the major causes of flux enhancement. Results show that contact of oil emulsion with bentonite forms larger particles resulting in flux increment. An optimum particle size of 37 μm, corresponds with a bentonite concentration of 300 mg/l and provided the highest flux. Beyond this limiting concentration, flux improvement gradually declined, possibly due to the formation of packed cake of particles on the membrane surface. The presence of bentonite in the oil emulsion promotes high shear stress which acts against the gel layer. This high shear stress, caused by bentonite particles and cross-flow velocity, reverses the adsorbed gel layer to the bulk of the liquid phase.  相似文献

Results of a parameter study concerning the electro-ultrafiltration with alternating electric fields of aqueous solutions of bovine serum albumin are presented. The alternating electric field diminishes membrane fouling and hence yields a higher specific filtrate flux. The effect of the electric field depends on frequency (0.5–50 Hz), field strength (0–80 V cm−1), conductivity (1–10 mS cm−1), protein concentration (0.1–5 w%), and membrane material (values in brackets are the range of each parameter examined in this work). Low frequency and high field strength yield the best result for electro-ultrafiltration with alternating fields. The effectiveness of the electric field increases with rising conductivity up to the point where a limiting electrolytic current is reached. Increasing protein concentration diminishes the effect of the electric field. A new procedure to perform crossflow filtration experiments, the so-called step-change experiment, is proposed. The results of the new procedure are compared to results of conventional experiments. The step-change experiments yielded reproducible results in good agreement with conventional experiments.  相似文献

Microfiltration of whey protein solutions by tubular ceramic membranes, under constant cross-flow and trans-membrane pressure, with periodic backwashing, is investigated using a fully instrumented pilot unit. Relatively large nominal membrane pore size (0.8 μm) insures very high protein transmission, which is desirable in applications such as microbial load reduction. In the first of a sequence of three filtration-backwashing cycles, irreversible and reversible fouling are identified, over the tested pressure range of 5–17.5 psi. Early in the first cycle, especially at the higher pressures, a pore constriction/blocking mechanism appears to be responsible for the irreversible fouling. In the other two cycles only the reversible fouling is significant, possibly due to some kind of protein layer formation on the membrane surface. The permeate flux level tends to increase by increasing trans-membrane pressure up to a near-optimum value of 10 psi, beyond which pressure has a negative effect. This interesting trend is attributed to the interplay of cross-flow velocity, which tends to reduce fouling by promoting re-suspension and breakage of colloidal protein agglomerates, with the trans-membrane pressure (and related flux) which leads to protein layer formation on the membrane and may impose compressive stresses, thereby increasing its resistance to permeation.  相似文献

The present work describes about the synthesis and characterization of Polysulfone blend nanoporous membrane with nonwoven support. This Nonwoven support provides mechanical strength to membrane while filtration process and minimizes membrane fouling. Hence it helps in better membrane performance in terms of salt rejection, improved flux, thermal stability and fairly increases in proton conductivity. In this work we have used K.C.270 nonwoven material consisting of fine polyester fibers and has a thickness of below 110 μm.  相似文献
