Novel poly[(fluorene)‐co‐(2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide‐3,7‐diyl)]s were synthesized. The octyl group on the 2,8‐dioctyldibenzothiophene‐S,S‐dioxide (DOSO) unit improved the solubility of the polymers and broadened the optical band gap from 2.95 to 3.20 eV as the content of DOSO unit increases. The electroluminescence (EL) spectra of polymers show CIE coordinates around (0.16, 0.07) independent of the ratio of DOSO units in the polymers, owing to the ICT and steric hindrance dual‐function. A high efficiency of 3.1 cd · A−1 (EQE = 3.9%) was obtained with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer/Ba/Al. The results indicate that PF‐3,7DOSOs could be a promising candidate for saturated blue‐emitting polymers with spectral stability and high efficiency.

Two new “H” type of indole‐based chromophores were designed and successfully introduced to the polymeric system, the resultant polymers demonstrated enhanced NLO effects, good processability, thermal stability and nearly excellent transparency, indicating the advantages of “H” type chromophore moieties. And they could be promising candidates for the practical applications as new photonic materials.

Three‐pole electrospinning devices integrated with a blade‐cage collector were developed to fabricate well‐aligned nano‐fiberous membranes. The proposed three‐pole configuration with a channel electrode can be a powerful tool in aligning nano‐fibers with regular diameter because the generated electric field can be accurately controlled without severe fluctuation in comparison with other methods. The three‐pole electrospinning method is also valid for industrial mass production and accurate diameter control of the aligned nano‐fibers.

Highly dispersed ZnO nanoparticles with variable particle sizes were successfully prepared within an amphiphilic hyperbranched polyetherpolyol matrix via decomposition of an organometallic precursor in the presence of air leading to stable nanocomposites. The high degree of stabilization during and after the synthesis by the polymer permits control over the nanoparticle size and therefore, due to the quantum‐size‐effect, the particle properties. Furthermore, these polymer‐inorganic nanocomposites can easily be dispersed in apolar solvents to yield highly transparent, stable solutions.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

Summary: The coordinative polymerization/cyclization of a flexible monodisperse di‐terpyridine ligand with iron(II ) chloride is reported. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight (MALDI‐TOF) investigations showed the preferred formation of a [2 + 2] macrocycle, but also larger aggregates (cycles or linear oligomers) with up to 10 monomer units were found. Because of its C16‐spacer, the solubility is sufficient for performing viscosity experiments in CHCl3/MeOH solution. A viscosity titration revealed a maximum in viscosity at the 1‐to‐1 ratio of iron(II ) ions to di‐terpyridine‐ligands, which indicates the formation of extended oligomers, polymers, catenanes and/or cycles at that ratio.

This paper describes the miscibility and self‐assembly, mediated by hydrogen‐bonding interactions, of new block copolymer/nanoparticle blends. The morphologies adopted by the immiscible poly[(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐(4‐vinyl pyridine)] (PCL‐b‐P4VP) diblock copolymer changes upon increasing the number of competitive hydrogen‐bonding interactions after adding increasing amounts of octaphenol polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OP‐POSS). Transmission electron microscopy reveals morphologies that exhibit high degrees of long‐range order, such as cylindrical and spherical structures, at relatively low OP‐POSS contents, and short‐range order or disordered structures at higher OP‐POSS contents. Analyses performed using differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and FT‐IR spectroscopy provide positive evidence that the pyridyl units of the P4VP block are significantly stronger hydrogen‐bond acceptors toward the OH group of OP‐POSS than are the CO groups of the PCL block, thereby resulting in excluded and confined PCL phases.

One‐dimensional methyl orange fibrils can be easily prepared. They are stable in acidic aqueous solutions and soluble in neutral water. When used to synthesize conducting polymer microtubules, the fibrils act as “hard templates” formally but as “soft templates” effectively. Microtubular structures of polypyrrole, polyaniline, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) have been achieved successfully via such water‐soluble versatile templates.

Self‐assembly of poly(2‐vinylpyridine)‐block‐poly(ϵ‐caprolactone) (P2VP‐b‐PCL) diblock copolymer in the presence of a selective solvent is investigated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Addition of water into a P2VP‐b‐PCL solution in N,N‐dimethylformamide at 20 °C produces elongated truncated lozenge shaped single crystals of uniform size and shape in large quantities. The single crystals are composed of PCL single‐crystal layer sandwiched between two P2VP layers tethered on the top and bottom basal surfaces. The formation of the single crystals is found to depend on the temperature. These findings provide a facile approach to the preparation of uniform single crystals in large quantities.

Summary: We demonstrate a novel approach for constructing photoactive multilayer films in which the aggregation of fluorescing molecules is effectively eliminated. In the films formed via a layer‐by‐layer electrostatic self‐assembly technique, the core‐shell amphiphilic copolymer, poly[(sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate)‐block‐vinylnaphthalene], was deposited. The isolated cores served as nanosized host sites for photoactive guest molecules (pyrene, perylene). The efficient energy transfer between polymeric chromophores and perylene molecules was observed.

A new strategy for the self‐polymerization of chromophores is investigated to develop a 2,7‐carbazole‐based nonlinear optical (NLO) conjugated polymer with an increasing conjugation length of chromophores. Elongation of the conjugation‐path length in chromophores has established engineering guidelines to enhance optical nonlinearity. Compared with the traditional synthesis of an NLO polymer, the chromophores should be well‐designed at a limited conjugation spacer, and then incorporated into a polymer matrix. In this research, the π‐conjugation spacer of chromophores extended perpendicularly to the dipole of chromophores during the polymerization process. Furthermore, this study marks the first research of integrating the π‐electrons of chromophores and conjugated polymers. These conjugated backbones promote a bulk‐polarization response, leading to large NLO coefficients.

Some new water‐soluble bis‐porphyrins, constituted of two porphyrin units spaced by means of aliphatic bridges of different lengths, were synthesized and characterized by MALDI‐TOF mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and UV‐vis spectroscopy. The hydrosolubility of these uncharged compounds was guaranteed from the presence of six long PEG chains bound on the peripheral positions of the two porphyrins. Cobalt and zinc derivatives were also prepared. In the case of Co‐bis‐porphyrin, the appearance of induced circular dichroism (ICD) signals in water solution confirmed the formation of stable complexes with some amino acids, in which the bis‐porphyrin behaves like molecular tweezers.

A cationic water‐soluble polyfluorene (P2) containing a high density of tetraalkylammonium side chains in polymer backbone was synthesized and characterized. The polymer shows excellent water solubility up to 100 mg · mL−1 as well as high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 44% in water. The relatively high cationic density and appropriate side chain length of the polymer are the key factors to achieve such high water solubility. The reduction potential of P2 is decreased as compared with its neutral polymer, reflecting the enhanced electron injection abilities. The standard NPB/Alq3 device using such a polymer as the electron injection layer shows nearly three‐fold enhancement in the electroluminescence (EL) efficiency.

Chromophore‐containing dendritic structures (G1, G2) are utilized to intercalate layered silicates, which results in a large d‐spacing up to 126 Å. An exfoliated morphology is obtained by mixing the dendritic structure intercalated layered silicates with polyimide in N,N‐dimethylacetamide solution. The dendritic structures attached on the clay template would arrange in a non‐centrosymmetric manner. This self‐assembled arrangement brought about the electro‐optical coefficients of 5–6 pm · V−1 for these relatively low chromophore‐containing organic/inorganic nanocomposites without resorting to poling. Excellent temporal stability (100 °C) is also achieved.

In the present paper, the microwave (MW)‐assisted synthesis of hydrogel forming polymers based on poly(acrylic acid) ( 1 ) is described. The polymer analogous condensation reaction between adamantyl moieties bearing free amino groups and poly(acrylic acid) ( 1 ) was carried out simply by mixing both components and subsequent use of MW protocol. The mixture was irradiated for 20 min without the addition of solvents or coupling agents. Aqueous solutions of the sodium salts of the obtained hydrophobically modified poly(acrylic acid)s showed a very high viscosity due to the intermolecular association of the hydrophobic side chains and the resulting formation of physical networks. By the addition of randomly methylated β‐cyclodextrin (RAMEB), the rheology of these systems could be influenced significantly.

We report for the first time the preparation of single polypyrrole (PPy) molecule chains using a “metal‐organic framework” with 1 nm channels as a template. The obtained one‐dimensional (1‐D) PPy has highly structure order and excellent conductivity, which has improved by as much as five orders of magnitude in comparison with that of 2‐D PPy.
