For modeling the constitutive properties of viscoelastic solids in the context of small deformations, the so-called three-parameter solid is often used. The differential equation governing the model response may be derived in a thermodynamically consistent way considering linear spring-dashpot elements. The main problem in generalizing constitutive models from small to finite deformations is to extend the theory in a thermodynamically consistent way, so that the second law of thermodynamics remains satisfied in every admissible process. This paper concerns with the formulation and constitutive equations of finite strain viscoelastic material using multiplicative decomposition in a thermodynamically consistent manner. Based on the proposed constitutive equations, a finite element (FE) procedure is developed and implemented in an FE code. Subsequently, the code is used to predict the response of elastomer bushings. The finite element analysis predicts displacements and rotations at the relaxed state reasonably well. The response to coupled radial and torsional deformations is also simulated.  相似文献

The infinitesimal breathing motions of long cylindrical tubes and hollow spherical shells of arbitrary wall thickness subjected to a finite deformation field caused by uniform internal and/or external pressures are investigated. A neo-Hookean material with a material constant varying continuously along the radial direction is used. The shell is first subjected to finite static deformations and is then exposed to a secondary dynamic displacement field. Based on the theory of small deformations superposed on large deformations, closed form expressions are obtained for the frequency of small oscillations about the highly prestressed state. Frequency versus initial deformation parameter curves are given for several nohomogeneity functions and for various wall thicknesses.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Accurate bushing analysis requires a locking free finite element formulation, an appropriate selection of the strain energy density function, and an adequate use of bulk modulus to assure numerical stability and accuracy. In this paper, the pressure projection finite element method is employed. The method projects displacement-calculated pressure onto a lower order pressure field, based on the Babuska-Brezzi condition, to avoid volumetric locking and pressure oscillation. Mooney-Rivlin and Cubic strain energy density functions are used to study the material effect on the predicted rubber behavior in tension-compression and shear deformation modes, and the need to use a higher order strain energy density function for bushing analysis is identified. The effect of bulk modulus on bonded rubber behavior in bushings with respect to bushing shape factor is studied, and the minimum allowable bulk modulus to impose incompressibility in bushing analysis is characterized. The load-deflection response of annular bushings subjected to axial, torsional, and radial deformations are analyzed and results are compared to linear approximations. An effort is made to demonstrate how a Mooney-Rivlin model cannot capture load-displacement nonlinearities in bushing axial and torsional deformations. Two- and three-dimensional results are compared and the applicability of two-dimensional analysis is discussed.  相似文献

A theory is formulated for the finite deformation of a thin membrane composed of homogeneous elastic material which is isotropic in its undeformed state. The theory is then extended to the case of a small deformation superposed on a known finite deformation of the membrane. As an example, small deformations of a circular cylindrical tube which has been subjected to a finite homogeneous extension and inflation are considered and the equations governing these small deformations are obtained for an incompressible material. By means of a static analysis the stability of cylindrically symmetric modes for the inflated and extended cylinder with fixed ends is determined and the results are verified by a dynamic analysis. The stability is considered in detail for a Mooney material. Methods are developed to obtain the natural frequencies for axially symmetric free vibrations of the extended and inflated cylindrical membrane. Some of the lower natural frequencies are calculated for a Mooney material and the methods are compared.  相似文献

Elasticity solutions are presented for bending and thermal deformations of functionally graded beams with various end conditions, using the state space-based differential quadrature method. The beams are assumed to be macroscopically isotropic, with Young’s modulus varying exponentially along the thickness and longitudinal directions, while Poisson’s ratio remaining constant. The state space method is adopted to obtain analytically the thickness variation of the elastic field and, when coupled with differential quadrature, the longitudinal discretization can be analyzed in an approximate manner. This approach is then validated by comparing the numerical results with the exact solutions for a special functionally graded beam and with finite element solutions. The influences of material gradient indices on the response of bi-directional functionally graded beams are finally investigated.

In metal grains one of the most important failure mechanisms involves shear band localization. As the band width is small, the deformations are affected by material length scales. To study localization in single grains a rate-dependent crystal plasticity formulation for finite strains is presented for metals described by the reformulated Fleck–Hutchinson strain gradient plasticity theory. The theory is implemented numerically within a finite element framework using slip rate increments and displacement increments as state variables. The formulation reduces to the classical crystal plasticity theory in the absence of strain gradients. The model is used to study the effect of an internal material length scale on the localization of plastic flow in shear bands in a single crystal under plane strain tension. It is shown that the mesh sensitivity is removed when using the nonlocal material model considered. Furthermore, it is illustrated how different hardening functions affect the formation of shear bands.  相似文献

In this paper a thick hollow cylinder with finite length made of two dimensional functionally graded material (2D-FGM) subjected to transient thermal boundary conditions is considered. The volume fraction distribution of materials, geometry and thermal boundary conditions are assumed to be axisymmetric but not uniform along the axial direction. The finite element method with graded material properties within each element is used to model the structure and the Crank–Nicolson finite difference method is implemented to solve time dependent equations of the heat transfer problem. Two-dimensional heat conduction in the cylinder is considered and variation of temperature with time as well as temperature distribution through the cylinder are investigated. Effects of variation of material distribution in two radial and axial directions on the temperature distribution and time response are studied. The achieved results show that using two-dimensional FGM leads to a more flexible design so that transient temperature, maximum amplitude and uniformity of temperature distributions can be modified to achieve required specifications by selecting a suitable material distribution profile in two directions.  相似文献

Burst of a turbo-engine disk in case of overspeed is investigated both from experimental and computational point of view. Two twin disks made of the same nickel based superalloy are tested. For the first one (B-disk), rotation rate in increased till burst. The second one (S-disk) is kept safe by stopping rotation just before burst, and unloading it to measure residual deformations. The material model parameters are deduced either from simple tension tests, or using an inverse method on the S-disk test. Two corresponding finite element simulations of the B-disk are then performed, using either an arc-length control method to overcome the limit point, or dynamic simulations. In both cases, the numerical burst rotation rate, associated with the loss of stability of the structure, is found to be in good agreement with the experimental result.  相似文献

The natural dynamic characteristics of a circular cylindrical tube made of three-directional(3 D) functional graded material(FGM) based on the Timoshenko beam theory are investigated. Hamilton’s principle is utilized to derive the novel motion equations of the tube, considering the interactions among the longitudinal, transverse, and rotation deformations. By dint of the differential quadrature method(DQM), the governing equations are discretized to conduct the analysis of natural dynamic charact...  相似文献

The axisymmetric deformations of thick circular rings are investigated. Four materials are explored: linear material, incompressible Neo-Hookean material and Ogden's and Bower's forms of compressible Neo-Hookean material. Radial distributed forces and a displacement-dependent pressure are the external loads. This problem is relatively simple and allows analytical, or semi-analytical, solution; therefore it has been chosen as a benchmark to test commercial finite element software for various material laws at large strains. The solutions obtained with commercial finite element software are almost identical to the present semi-analytical ones, except for the linear material, for which commercial finite element programs give incorrect results.  相似文献

In this paper transient thermal stresses in a thick hollow cylinder with finite length made of two-dimensional functionally graded material (2D-FGM) based on classical theory of thermoelasticity are considered. The volume fraction distribution of materials, geometry and thermal load are assumed to be axisymmetric but not uniform along the axial direction. The finite element method with graded material properties within each element is used to model the structure. Temperature, displacements and stress distributions through the cylinder at different times are investigated. Also the effects of variation of material distribution in two radial and axial directions on the thermal stress distribution and time responses are studied. The achieved results show that using 2D-FGM leads to a more flexible design so that time responses of structure, maximum amplitude of stresses and uniformity of stress distributions can be modified to a required manner by selecting suitable material distribution profiles in two directions.  相似文献

This paper investigates the axisymmetric flexural behaviour of an infinite elastic plate resting on an isotropic incompressible elastic halfspace which is initially deformed by a state of finite radial extension or compression. The small axisymmetric flexural deformations of the infinite plate are due to forces which act normal to the plane of radial deformation. The basic problem is of interest in connection with geomechanics problems which deal with interaction analysis of the earth's crustal plate and the underlying mantle.  相似文献

The elastic stability of a rubber-like, thick-walled tube which is subjected to finite torsional deformation is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The analysis is based on the theory of finite elastic deformations, in cojunction with the method of small displacements superposed on large elastic deformations. The governing field equations are solved by a numerical scheme which determines the critical buckling torque and the associated buckling mode of the tube. The predicted results compare closely with the experimental measurements of the buckling of thick-walled silicone rubber tubes tested under finite twist.  相似文献

We develop a hydroelastic model based on a {3, 2}-order sandwich composite panel theory and Wagner’s water impact theory for investigating the fluid–structure interaction during the slamming process. The sandwich panel theory incorporates the transverse shear and the transverse normal deformations of the core, while the face sheets are modeled with the Kirchhoff plate theory. The structural model has been validated with the general purpose finite element code ABAQUS®. The hydrodynamic model, based on Wagner’s theory, considers hull’s elastic deformations. A numerical procedure to solve the nonlinear system of governing equations, from which both the fluid’s and the structure’s deformations can be simultaneously computed, has been developed and verified. The hydroelastic effect on hull’s deformations and the unsteady slamming load have been delineated. This work advances the state of the art of analyzing hydroelastic deformations of composite hulls subjected to slamming impact.  相似文献

In this paper, two different approaches for modeling the behaviour of carbon nanotubes are presented. The first method models carbon nanotubes as an inhomogeneous cylindrical network shell using the asymptotic homogenization method. Explicit formulae are derived representing Young’s and shear moduli of single-walled nanotubes in terms of pertinent material and geometric parameters. As an example, assuming certain values for these parameters, the Young’s modulus was found to be 1.71 TPa, while the shear modulus was 0.32 TPa. The second method is based on finite element models. The inter-atomic interactions due to covalent and non-covalent bonds are replaced by beam and spring elements, respectively, in the structural model. Correlations between classical molecular mechanics and structural mechanics are used to effectively model the physics governing the nanotubes. Finite element models are developed for single-, double- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The deformations from the finite element simulations are subsequently used to predict the elastic and shear moduli of the nanotubes. The variation of mechanical properties with tube diameter is investigated for both zig-zag and armchair configurations. Furthermore, the dependence of mechanical properties on the number of nanotubules in multi-walled structures is also examined. Based on the finite element model, the value for the elastic modulus varied from 0.9 to 1.05 TPa for single and 1.32 to 1.58 TPa for double/multi-walled nanotubes. The shear modulus was found to vary from 0.14 to 0.47 TPa for single-walled nanotubes and 0.37 to 0.62 for double/multi-walled nanotubes.  相似文献

An Eulerian finite element formulation is presented for problems of large elastic-plastic flow. The method is based on Hill's variational principle for incremental deformations, and is ideally suited to isotropically hardening Prandtl-Reuss materials. Further, the formulation is given in a manner which allows any conventional finite element program, for “small strain” elastic-plastic analysis, to be simply and rigorously adapted to problems involving arbitrary amounts of deformation and arbitrary levels of stress in comparison to plastic deformation moduli. The method is applied to a necking bifurcation analysis of a bar in plane-strain tension. The paper closes with a unified general formulation of finite element equations, both Lagrangian and Eulerian, for large deformations, with arbitrary choice of the conjugate stress and strain measures. Further, a discussion is given of other proposed formulations for elastic-plastic finite element analysis at large strain, and the inadequacies of some of these are commented upon.  相似文献

Vehicle tyres are anisotropic inhomogeneous fibre-reinforced shells which undergo finite elastic deformations. Calculation of their stress and deformation fields is a difficult task and is normally performed using the finite element technique. In this paper an attempt is made to provide an approximate analysis of the deformation field modelling the tyre as an ideal fibre-reinforced material. Radial-ply tyres are reinforced by a belt of fibres running around the wheel in the circumferential direction under the tread of the tyre. A second set of fibres lies in each radial cross-section, of the tyre and runs from the bead wire which seats against one wheel rim to the bead wire at the other wheel rim. We shall assume each radial cross-section of the tyre is in a state of plane strain and is formed from an arch of fibre-reinforced composite material which is reinforced in the hoop direction. This composite is assumed to be an ideal material which is inextensible in the fibre-direction and is incompressible. The plane-strain deformations of this section are examined and then used to analyse the deformation of the tyre as a whole.  相似文献

Contact of a circular ring with a flat, rigid ground is considered using curved beam theory and analytical methods. Applications include tires, springs, and stiffeners, among others. The governing differential equations are derived using the principle of virtual work and the formulation includes deformations due to bending, transverse shear and circumferential extension. The three associated stiffness quantities, EI, GA and EA, respectively, remain as independent parameters in the differential equations. This allows the special cases such as an inextensible Timoshenko beam (EI and GA) or an extensible Euler beam (EI and EA) to be obtained directly by the appropriate limits. The effect of these three stiffness parameters on the contact pressure solution is studied, which shows how those fundamental parameters can be selected for the purpose of the application. Although the formulation is for small displacement theory, both radial and circumferential distributed loads are considered, which allows the pressure in the deformed state to be vertical rather than radial, which is shown to be important. Closed form expressions for all force and displacement quantities are obtained in terms of the angular location of the edge of contact, which must be determined numerically. Extensibility complicates the analytical expressions within the contact region, and a series solution is proposed in this case. A two-term asymptotic expression for the stiffness of the ring is determined analytically. Finally, all solutions are validated using the commercial finite element software ABAQUS, with attention to non-linear behavior and the range of validity of these solutions.  相似文献

The mechanics of double-lap joints with unidirectional ([016]) and quasi-isotropic ([0/90/?45/45]2S) composite adherends under tensile loading are investigated experimentally using moiré interferometry, numerically with a finite element method and analytically through a one-dimensional closed-form solution. Full-field moiré interferometry was employed to determine in-plane deformations of the edge surface of the joint overlaps. A linear-elastic two-dimensional finite element model was developed for comparison with the experimental results and to provide deformation and stress distributions for the joints. Shear-lag solutions, with and without the inclusion of shear deformations of the adherend, were applied to the prediction of the adhesive shear stress distributions. These stress distributions and mechanics of the joints are discussed in detail using the results obtained from experimental, numerical and theoretical analyses.  相似文献
