The concepts of geometric and topological tame point are introduced for a space of nonpositive curvature. These concepts are applied to the characterization problem forCAT(0) 4-manifolds. It is shown that everyCAT(0)M 4 having a single (geometric or topological) tame point is homeomorphic toR 4. Davis and Januszkiewicz have recently constructedCAT(0)n-manifolds,M n withn ≥ 5 such that the set of tame points form a dense open subset ofM n , butM n R n .  相似文献

A Semigroup Approach to Harmonic Maps   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We present a semigroup approach to harmonic maps between metric spaces. Our basic assumption on the target space (N,d) is that it admits a barycenter contraction, i.e. a contracting map which assigns to each probability measure q on N a point b(q) in N. This includes all metric spaces with globally nonpositive curvature in the sense of Alexandrov as well as all metric spaces with globally nonpositive curvature in the sense of Busemann. It also includes all Banach spaces.The analytic input comes from the domain space (M,) where we assume that we are given a Markov semigroup (pt)t>0. Typical examples come from elliptic or parabolic second-order operators on Rn, from Lévy type operators, from Laplacians on manifolds or on metric measure spaces and from convolution operators on groups. In contrast to the work of Korevaar and Schoen (1993, 1997), Jost (1994, 1997), Eells and Fuglede (2001) our semigroups are not required to be symmetric.The linear semigroup acting, e.g., on the space of bounded measurable functions u:MR gives rise to a nonlinear semigroup (Pt*)t acting on certain classes of measurable maps f:MN. We will show that contraction and smoothing properties of the linear semigroup (pt)t can be extended to the nonlinear semigroup (Pt*)t, for instance, LpLq smoothing, hypercontractivity, and exponentially fast convergence to equilibrium. Among others, we state existence and uniqueness of the solution to the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps between metric spaces. Moreover, for this solution we prove Lipschitz continuity in the interior and Hölder continuity at the boundary.Our approach also yields a new interpretation of curvature assumptions which are usually required to deduce regularity results for the harmonic map flow: lower Ricci curvature bounds on the domain space are equivalent to estimates of the L1-Wasserstein distance between the distribution of two Brownian motions in terms of the distance of their starting points; nonpositive sectional curvature on the target space is equivalent to the fact that the L1-Wasserstein distance of two distributions always dominates the distance of their barycenters.Dedicated to the memory of Professor Dr. Heinz Bauer  相似文献

It is shown that the linear complementarity problem of finding az inR n such thatMz + q 0, z 0 andz T (Mz + q) = 0 can be solved by a single linear program in some important special cases including those whenM or its inverse is a Z-matrix, that is a real square matrix with nonpositive off-diagonal elements. The purpose of this article is to study some simply connected Lie groups with left invariant Einstein metric, negative Einstein constant and nonpositive sectional curvature. These Lie groups are classified if their associated metric Lie algebra s is of Iwasawa type and s = An1n2...nr, where all niare Lie algebras of Heisenberg type with [[ni,nj] = {0} for ij. The most important ideas of the article are based on a construction method for Einstein spaces introduced by Wolter in 1991. By this method some new examples of Einstein spaces with nonpositive curvature are constructed. In another part of the article it is shown that Damek-Ricci spaces have negative sectional curvature if and only if they are symmetric spaces.  相似文献

We prove an optimal relative isoperimetric inequality
for a 2-dimensional minimal surface in the n-dimensional space form of nonpositive constant curvature κ under the assumptions that lies in the exterior of a convex domain and contains a subset Γ which is contained in and along which meets perpendicularly and that is connected, or more generally radially-connected from a point in Γ. Also we obtain an optimal version of linear isoperimetric inequalities for minimal submanifolds in a simply connected Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvatures bounded above by a nonpositive number. Moreover, we show the monotonicity property for the volume of a geodesic ball in such minimal submanifolds. We emphasize that in all the results of this paper minimal submanifolds need not be area minimizing or even stable. Received: 7 October 1997 / Revised version: 28 April 1998  相似文献

We consider a finite subgroup n of the group O(N) of orthogonal matrices, where N = 2 n , n = 1, 2 .... This group was defined in [7]. We use it in this paper to construct spherical designs in 2 n -dimensional Euclidean space R N . We prove that representations of the group n on spaces of harmonic polynomials of degrees 1, 2 and 3 are irreducible. This and the earlier results [1–3] imply that the orbit n,2 x t of any initial point x on the sphere S N – 1 is a 7-design in the Euclidean space of dimension 2 n .  相似文献

The theoretical presentation and analysis is given for two families of simple in-place merging algorithms and their limiting cases. The first family merges stably inO(k·n) time andO(n 1/k ) additional space with a limiting case running inO(n logn) time and constant space. The second family merges unstably inO (k ·n) time andO(log k n) space with a limiting case running inO(nG(n)) time and constant space. Summary The purpose of this paper is to study, in intrinsic way, the Moyal's product, defined in the flat space R 2n. This product is defined here with the twisted convolution and the Fourier transform. The S(R 2n) and L2(R 2n) spaces are*5-algebras. Because of this definition, the*V-product of some tempered distributions is defined. Let O M v be the set of multiplication operators in S(R 2n). By transposition, the S(R 2n) space is a right-module on O M v . The support of f*v g is different from the support of f·g; under large enough hypotheses, there is a Taylor's formula for the star-product function of the v variable. The v space of the multiplication operators in L2(R 2n) is defined here as the space of tempered distributions, the image of which is the set of bounded operators in L2(R 2n) by the Weyl map. After the study of v space, it is possible to show the spectral resolution of the real elements of v or of O M v , which satisfies a, probably superfluous, hypothesis.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a problem of distance selection in the arrangement of hyperplanes induced by n given points. Given a set of n points in d-dimensional space and a number k, , determine the hyperplane that is spanned by d points and at distance ranked by k from the origin. For the planar case we present an O(nlog2n) runtime algorithm using parametric search partly different from the usual approach [N. Megiddo, J. ACM 30 (1983) 852]. We establish a connection between this problem in 3-d and the well-known 3SUM problem using an auxiliary problem of counting the number of vertices in the arrangement of n planes that lie between two sheets of a hyperboloid. We show that the 3-d problem is almost 3SUM-hard and solve it by an O(n2log2n) runtime algorithm. We generalize these results to the d-dimensional (d4) space and consider also a problem of enumerating distances.  相似文献

We show that the homology over a field of the space nnX of free maps from the n-sphere to the n-fold suspension of X depends only on the cohomology algebra of X and compute it explicitly. We compute also the homology of the closely related labelled configuration space C(Sn,X) on the n-sphere with labels in X and of its completion, that depend only on the homology of X. In many but not all cases the homology of C(Sn,X) coincides with the homology of nnX. In this paper we study the role of constant vector fields on a Euclidean space R n+p in shaping the geometry of its compact submanifolds. For an n-dimensional compact submanifold M of the Euclidean space R n+p with mean curvature vector field H and a constant vector field on R n+p , the smooth function is used to obtain a characterization of sphere among compact submanifolds of positive Ricci curvature (cf. main Theorem).   相似文献

We characterize them as the only Willmore Lagrangian submanifolds invariant under the action of SO(n). We first study the Grassmannian manifoldG n (Rn+p)as a submanifold in Euclidean space n (R n+p). Then we give a local expression for each map from Riemannian manifoldM toG n (R n+p) n (R n+p), and use the local expression to establish a formula which is satisfied by any harmonic map fromM toG n (R n+p).
