Dynamic Stokes' shift and fluorescence anisotropy measurements of coumarin 153 (C153) and coumarin 151 (C151) as fluorescence probes have been carried out to understand the influence of electrolytes (NaCl and LiCl) on the hydration behavior of aqueous (ethylene oxide)100-(propylene oxide)70-(ethylene oxide)100 (EO100-PO70-EO100, F127) block copolymer micelles. A small blue shift in the fluorescence spectra of C153 has been observed in presence of electrolytes due to the dehydration of the oxyethylene chains in the PEO-PPO region, although fluorescence spectra of C151 remain unaltered. The close vicinity of bulk water for C151 probably negates the effect of dehydration in the PEO region. Fluorescence anisotropy measurements indicate a gradual increase in microviscosity with electrolyte concentrations. The partial collapse of copolymer blocks in the presence of electrolytes has been suggested as a reason for the increase in microviscosity along with the strong hydration of ions in the corona region. The interplay between the ion hydration and the mechanically trapped water content, and specific interaction of ions, such as complexation of Li+ ions with the copolymer block, is found to control solvation dynamics in the corona region. In addition to that, it has been established that Na+ ions reside deep into the corona region whereas Li+ ions prefer to reside closer to the surface. Owing to its higher lyotropicity, LiCl influences the corona hydration to a greater extent than NaCl and sets in micelle-micelle interaction above the 2 M LiCl concentration, as reflected in the saturation of solvation time constants. The formation of larger clusters of F127 micelles above 2 M LiCl has been confirmed by dynamic light scattering measurements; however, such cluster formation is not evident with NaCl.  相似文献

Apparent specific densities of aqueous solutions of the diblock copolymers C18(EO)100, C18(EO)20, and (EO)92(BO)18 and the triblock copolymers (EO)25(PO)40(EO)25 and (EO)21(PO)47(EO)21 in the micellar state have been measured over a temperature range from 10 to 90 degrees C at concentrations between 1% and 5%, using an oscillating tube densitometer. From these measurements, apparent specific volumes of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(propylene oxide) (PPO), poly(butylene oxide) (PBO), and octadecane in the micellar state have been determined. The composition of the block copolymers was checked by NMR spectroscopy. Results were compared with published data for the polymers and bulk values for octadecane, respectively. The apparent specific density of PEO chains in the dissolved state was also measured for PEG4600 solutions at different concentrations and compared with results in the micellar state. The results presented in the paper are crucial in connection with analysis and modeling of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data from polymer and block copolymer micellar systems. PEO and PPO have a relatively low apparent partial specific volume in water at low temperatures. It is associated with water molecules making strong hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atoms on the polymer backbone. These water molecules gradually become disordered when the temperature is increased and the polymer apparent specific volume increases. For PBO in the micellar cores of PBO-PEO block copolymer micelles and in PNiPAM microgels, pronounced temperature dependence with the same origin is also found. The application of the derived results for the apparent specific volume of PEO for deriving contrast factors is demonstrated and the results are used in the analysis of SAXS data for semidilute solutions of PEG4600 in a broad temperature range.  相似文献

Effects of constituent block size of triblock copolymers on the nature of the water molecules in the corona region of their micelles have been investigated using time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The physical nature of the water molecules in the micellar corona region of the block copolymer, Pluronic F88 ([ethylene oxide (EO)]103-[propylene oxide (PO)]39-EO103), has been studied using a solubilized coumarin dye. Solvent reorientation time and rotational correlation time have been measured and compared with another block copolymer, Pluronic P123 (EO20-PO70-EO20), which has a different composition of the constituent PO and EO blocks. It is noted that due to the presence of larger number of EO blocks in F88 as compared with P123, the corona region of the former micelle is more hydrated than that of the latter. The solvent reorientation time and rotational correlation time are found to be relatively shorter for F88 as compared with P123. This indicates that the water molecules in the corona of the F88 micelle are more labile than those of P123, which is also supported from the estimated number of water molecules associated with each EO unit, measured from the size of each type of micelle and its aggregation number. To understand the effect of block size on the chemical reactions in these microheterogeneous media, electron transfer reactions have been carried out between different coumarin acceptors and N, N-dimethylaniline donor. The electron transfer results obtained in F88 micelles have been compared with those obtained in P123, and the results are rationalized on the basis of the relative hydration of the two triblock copolymer micelles.  相似文献

The mixed micellar system comprising the poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)-based triblock copolymer (EO)(20)(PO)(70)(EO)(20) (P123) and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been investigated in aqueous media by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and viscosity measurements. The aggregation number of the copolymer in the micelles decreases upon addition of SDS, but a simultaneous enhancement in the degree of micellar hydration leads to a significant increase in the micellar volume fraction at a fixed copolymer concentration. This enhancement in the micellar hydration leads to a marked increase in the stability of the micellar gel phase until it is destroyed at very high SDS concentration. Mixed micellar systems with low and intermediate SDS concentrations form the micellar gel phase in much wider temperature and copolymer concentration ranges than the pure copolymer micellar solution. A comparison of the observed results with those for the copolymers (EO)(26)(PO)(40)(EO)(26) (P85) and (EO)(99)(PO)(70)(EO)(99) (F127) suggests that the composition of the copolymers plays a significant role in determining the influence of SDS on the gelation characteristics of the aqueous copolymer solutions. Copolymers with high PO/EO ratios show an enhancement in the stability of the gel phase, whereas copolymers with low PO/EO ratios show a deterioration of the same in the presence of SDS.

Dynamic Stokes' shift and fluorescence anisotropy measurements using coumarin-153 (C153) and coumarin-151 (C151) as the fluorescence probes have been carried out in aqueous poly(ethylene oxide)20-poly(propylene oxide)70-poly(ethylene oxide)20 (P123) and poly(ethylene oxide)100-poly(propylene oxide)70-poly(ethylene oxide)100 (F127) block copolymer micelles with an aim to understand the water structures and dynamics in the micellar corona region. It has been established that the probes reside in the micellar corona region. It is indicated that the corona regions of P123 and F127 micelles are relatively less hydrated than the Palisade layers of neutral micelles like Triton-X-100 and Brij-35. From the appraisal of total Stokes' shift values for the probes in the two block copolymer micelles, it is inferred that the F127 micelle is more hydrated than the P123 micelle. It is observed that the dynamic Stokes' shift values for both of the probes remain more or less similar at all the temperatures studied in the P123 micelle. For C153 in F127, however, the observed Stokes' shift is seen to decrease quite sharply with temperature, though it remains quite similar for C151. Moreover, the fraction of the unobserved initial dynamic Stokes' shift is appreciably higher for both the probes in the F127 micelle compared to that in P123. Over the studied temperature range of 293-313 K, the spectral shift correlation function is described adequately by a bi-exponential function. Rotational relaxation times for C153 in both the micelles show a kind of transition at around 303 K. These results have been rationalized assuming collapse of the poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blocks and formation of water clusters in the corona region due to dehydration of poly(ethylene oxide) blocks with an increase in temperature. A dissimilar probe location has been inferred for the differences in the results with C153 and C151 probes in F127. Comparison of the microviscosity and the hydration of the block copolymer micelles has also been made with those of the other commonly used neutral micelles, for a better understanding of the results in the block copolymer micelles.  相似文献

The effect of molecular characteristics of EO-PO triblock copolymers viz. Pluronic(?) P103 (EO(17)PO(60)PEO(17)), P123 (EO(19)PO(69)EO(19)), and F127 (EO(100)PO(65)EO(100)) on micellar behavior and solubilization of a diuretic drug, hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) was investigated. The critical micellization temperatures (CMTs) and size for empty as well as drug loaded micelles are reported. The CMTs and micelle size depended on the hydrophobicity and molecular weight of the copolymer; a decrease in CMT and increase in size was observed on solubilization. The solubilization of the drug hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) in the block copolymer nanoaggregates at different temperatures (28, 37, 45°C), pH (3.7, 5.0, 6.7) and in the presence of added salt (NaCl) was monitored by using UV-vis spectroscopy and solubility data were used to calculate the solubilization characteristics; micelle-water partition coefficient (P) and thermodynamic parameters of solubilization viz. Gibbs free energy (ΔG(s)°), enthalpy (ΔH(s)°) and entropy (ΔS(s)°). The solubility of the drug in copolymer increases with the trend: P103>P123>F127. The solubilized drug decreased the cloud point (CP) of copolymers. Results show that the drug solubility increases in the presence of salt but significantly enhances with the increase in the temperature and at a lower pH in which drug remains in the non-ionized form.  相似文献

Dynamic Stokes' shift measurements using coumarin 153 as the fluorescence probe have been carried out to explore the effect of added electrolyte, lithium chloride (LiCl), on solvation dynamics in the Triton-X-100 (TX-100) micelle and thus to understand the changes in micellar Palisade layer, especially the entrapped water structures in the Palisade layer. At all concentrations of LiCl, the spectral shift correlation function shows biexponential decay. At lower LiCl concentrations, the longer solvation time is seen to decrease, although the shorter solvation time is not affected much. At higher LiCl concentrations, both longer and shorter solvation times increase with electrolyte concentration. The present observations have been rationalized assuming two possible modes of interaction of the Li+ ions in the micellar palisade layer. For LiCl concentrations below about 1.5 M, the Li+ ions appear to bind preferably to the ether groups of surfactant molecules, and the increased micellar hydration with the added salt effectively makes the solvation dynamics faster. At higher LiCl concentrations, available ether binding sites for the Li+ ions seem to get occupied effectively and the excess Li+ ions start remaining in the Palisade layer as strongly hydrated free ions. Because of strong hydration of the Li+ ions, the mobility of the entrapped water molecules in the micellar Palisade layer decreases significantly, causing the solvation dynamics to slow at higher LiCl concentrations. The fluorescence anisotropy results in the present systems are also in support of the above inferences drawn from solvation dynamics results. The present results with LiCl salt are found to be substantially different than those obtained in our earlier study (Kumbhakar et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 14168) with salts such as NaCl, KCl, and CsCl. These differences are attributed mainly to the binding of the Li+ ions with the surfactant ether groups, which seems to be unlikely for the other alkali cations.  相似文献

Poloxamers F88 (EO97PO39EO97) and P85 (EO27PO39EO27) are triblock copolymers of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO), which have the same hydrophobic PO block. We studied aqueous solutions of these two copolymers by the conjoint use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheology, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The results showed that the temperature-induced micellization of aqueous solutions of F88 and P85 was a progressive process followed by gelation for sufficiently concentrated samples. Gelation was due to the ordered packing of micelles under a hexagonal compact (HC) structure for P85 and a body-centered cubic (BCC) phase for F88. Importantly, the phase diagram of F88/P85 mixtures in water was elucidated and showed the destabilization of the HC phase upon addition of small amounts of F88.  相似文献

The formation of micelles of Pluronic block copolymers in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was studied using fluorescence, solubilization measurements, and frozen fracture electron microscopy (FFEM) methods at 40 degrees C. It was discovered that surfactants L44 (EO(10)PO(23)EO(10)), P85 (EO(26)PO(40)EO(26)), and P105 (EO(37)PO(56)EO(37)) can form micelles in PEG 200 (PEG with a nominal molecular weight of 200), and the critical micellization concentration (CMC) decreases with increasing molecular weight of the surfactants. The size of the micelles formed by these Pluronic block copolymers is in the range of 6-35 nm. The CMC values in PEG 200 are higher than those in aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The amphiphilic copolymers of the Pluronic family are known to be excellent dispersants for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in water, especially F108 and F127, which have rather long end-blocks of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). In this study, the structure of the CNT/polymer hybrid formed in water is evaluated by measurements of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with contrast variation, as supported by cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) imaging. The homogeneous, stable, inklike dispersions exhibited very small isolated bundles of carbon nanotubes in cryo-TEM images. SANS experiments were conducted at different D(2)O/H(2)O content of the dispersing solvent. The data for both systems showed surprisingly minimal intensity values at 70% D(2)O solvent composition, which is much higher than the expected value of 17% D(2)O that is based on the scattering length density (SLD) of PEO. At this near match point, the data exhibited a q(-1) power law relation of intensity to the scattering vector (q), indicating rodlike entities. Two models are evaluated, as extensions to Pederson's block copolymer micelles models. One is loosely adsorbed polymer chains on a rodlike CNT bundle. In the other, the hydrophobic block is considered to form a continuous hydrated shell on the CNT surface, whereas the hydrophilic blocks emanate into the solvent. Both models were found to fit the experimental data reasonably well. The model fit required special considerations of the tight association of water molecules around PEO chains and slight isotopic selectivity.  相似文献

The phase transition between unimer and micellar phases of poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO–PPO–PEO) triblock copolymer Pluronic P105 in aqueous solution has been investigated as a function of temperature using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The transition of 8 wt% Pluronic P105 in aqueous solution was found to occur at 25 °C. As temperature increases, PO blocks appear to be stretched conformers with strong interchain interaction, and the formation of a hydrophobic core in the micellar phase. The EO chains are found to change to a more disordered structure with low-chain packing density from the unimer phase to the micellar phase. Both the EO and PO blocks exhibit dehydration during the phase transition. Received: 17 September 1998 Accepted in revised form: 10 December 1998  相似文献

The present study used calorimetric techniques to follow the interaction of random and block ethylene oxide (EO)-propylene oxide (PO) copolymers with ionic surfactants. Features such as the intensity of the interaction (evaluated through their critical aggregation concentrations) and the profile of the isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) curves were comparatively analyzed for random and block copolymers with similar composition (number of EO and PO units). Random copolymers displayed an interaction similar to that observed with other hydrophilic homopolymers with the additional characteristic that the intensity of the interaction increased with the increase in the copolymer hydrophobicity (as determined by its PO content), revealing that these copolymers display an intermediate behavior between PEO and PPO. For nonaggregated block copolymers (unimers) with large enough EO blocks (molar mass above 2000 g mol-1), ITC curves revealed that the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) interacts with the PO and EO blocks almost independently, being more favorable with the PO block, which controls the critical aggregation concentration (cac) value. Effects of temperature and of the nature of the ionic surfactants on their interaction with these copolymers were found to agree with the previously reported trends.  相似文献

We investigate the interaction between zero-charged catanionic vesicles and PEO–PPO–PEO (poly(ethylene oxide–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide)) triblock copolymers. The 25-mg mL?1 aqueous solution of tetradecyltrimethylammonium laurate (TTAL) contains closely packed uni- and multi-lamellar vesicles and shows viscoelastic properties with a dominant elastic modulus (G′) over a viscous modulus (G″). When a small amount of F127 ((EO)97(PO)69(EO)97) or F68 ((EO)76(PO)29(EO)76) was added, an improvement of the viscoelasticity was observed at suitable polymer concentrations. Freeze–fracture transmission electron microscopy (FF-TEM) observations on an F68-containing system revealed interesting aggregate transition from vesicles to flexible tubules and back to vesicles. The improvement of the viscoelasticity of the vesicular solution containing F68 or F127 can be explained by the formation of tubule and polymer–vesicle associates, while no such phenomenon was noticed for P123 ((EO)19(PO)69(EO)19) which has the highest propylene oxide (PO) content and the strongest ability to self-associate in aqueous solution. In all the cases, vesicles will be destroyed and phase separation can be observed at high polymer contents (>5-mg mL?1).  相似文献

Spherical micelles of the diblock copolymer/surfactant Brij 700 (C(18)EO(100)) in water (D(2)O) solution have been investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). SAXS and SANS experiments are combined to obtain complementary information from the two different contrast conditions of the two techniques. Solutions in a concentration range from 0.25 to 10 wt % and at temperatures from 10 to 80 degrees C have been investigated. The data have been analyzed on absolute scale using a model based on Monte Carlo simulations, where the micelles have a spherical homogeneous core with a graded interface surrounded by a corona of self-avoiding, semiflexible interacting chains. SANS and SAXS data were fitted simultaneously, which allows one to obtain extensive quantitative information on the structure and profile of the core and corona, the chain interactions, and the concentration effects. The model describes the scattering data very well, when part of the EO chains are taken as a "background"contribution belonging to the solvent. The effect of this becomes non-negligible at polymer concentrations as low as 2 wt %, where overlap of the micellar coronas sets in. The results from the analysis on the micellar structure, interchain interactions, and structure factor effects are all consistent with a decrease in solvent quality of water for the PEO block as the theta temperature of PEO is approached.  相似文献

The acid effect on the aggregation of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers EO(20)PO(70)EO(20) has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), particle size analyzer (PSA), Fourier transformed infrared, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The critical micellization temperature for Pluronic P123 in different HCl aqueous solutions increases with the increase of acid concentration. Additionally, the hydrolysis degradation of PEO blocks is observed in strong acid concentrations at higher temperatures. When the acid concentration is low, TEM and PSA show the increase of the micelle mean diameter and the decrease of the micelle polydispersity at room temperature, which demonstrate the extension of EO corona and tendency of uniform micelle size because of the charge repulsion. When under strong acid conditions, the aggregation of micelles through the protonated water bridges was observed.  相似文献

The temperature-induced structural changes and thermodynamics of ionic microgels based on poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) networks bonded with poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) (Pluronic) copolymers have been studied by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), ultra-small-angle neutron scattering (USANS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and equilibrium swelling techniques. Aggregation within microgels based on PAA and either the hydrophobic Pluronic L92 (average composition, EO8PO52EO8; PPO content, 80%) or the hydrophilic Pluronic F127 (average composition, EO99PO67EO99; PPO content, 30%) was studied and compared to that in the solutions of the parent Pluronic. The neutron scattering results indicate the formation of micelle-like aggregates within the F127-based microgel particles, while the L92-based microgels formed fractal structures of dense nanoparticles. The microgels exhibit thermodynamically favorable volume phase transitions within certain temperature ranges due to reversible aggregation of the PPO chains, which occurs because of hydrophobic associations. The values of the apparent standard enthalpy of aggregation in the microgel suspensions indicate aggregation of hydrophobic clusters that are more hydrophobic than the un-cross-linked PPO chains in the Pluronic. Differences in the PPO content in Pluronics L92 and F127 result in a higher hydrophobicity of the resulting L92-PAA-EGDMAmicrogels and a larger presence of hydrophobic, densely cross-linked clusters that aggregate into supramolecular structures rather than micelle-like aggregates such as those formed in the F127-PAA-EGDMA microgels.  相似文献

The micellar properties and solubilization capacity of poorly water soluble drugs of several micellar and gel solutions of diblock and triblock copolymers of styrene oxide/ethylene oxide have been measured and compared with block copolymers of butylene oxide/ethylene oxide, showing that the solubilization capacity of the styrene oxide block is approximately four times that of a butylenes oxide block for dilute solutions. To continue establishing the correlation between micellar characteristics and solubilization capacity, we have found it interesting to compare the micellar and gelation properties of the diblock and triblock copolymers PSO10PEO135 and PEO69PSO8PEO69 (subindexes are the number-average block lengths), with different architecture but similar average block lengths. Surface tension measurements allowed the determination of the critical micelle concentrations at several temperatures and, so, to calculate standard enthalpies of micellization. Static and dynamic light scattering data permitted us to determine micellar parameters and to obtain qualitatively the extent of hydration of the copolymer micelle. A tube inversion method was used to define the mobile-immobile (soft-hard gel) phase boundary. To refine the phase diagram and observe the existence of additional phases, rheological measurements were done. The results are in good agreement with previous values published for PSOnPEOm and PEOmPSOnPEOm copolymers.  相似文献
