Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) which is the time space varying nature of two parallel splitting rays polarized perpendicularly in single mode fiber, causes a serious problem in high bit rate transmission. We evaluated the PMD induced system penalty by means of simulations for Miller and Manchester signals under similar conditions and found that Miller is more tolerant to PMD than Manchester.  相似文献

A three-stage compensator used for Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and Chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation is proposed. The compensator is capable of compensating the two components of second-order PMD when no CD exists. Two operating points of compensating second-order PMD have been proposed. Two-stage and three-stage compensators are compared by the outage probability. When CD is introduced, the compensator should retain a quantity of second-order PMD to compensate CD. The outage probability when PMD and CD coexist has been calculated. The results show that a tradeoff must be made in order to compensate CD and PMD at the same time.  相似文献

We study the dependence on fiber birefringence of the bit-error rate (BER) caused by amplifier noise in a linear optical fiber telecommunication system. We show that the probability-distribution function of the BER obtained by averaging over many realizations of birefringent disorder has an extended tail that corresponds to anomalously large values of BER. We specifically discuss the dependence of the tail on such details of pulse detection at the fiber output as setting the clock and filtering procedures.  相似文献

Effect of numerical aperture on mode dispersion and bandwidth is reported for commercially available step-index plastic optical fibers. For the first time, the functional relationship is given between dispersion and the “tilt-angle” describing the slant of the input/output face for a fiber terminated by a plane not perpendicular to the fiber axis. This tilt of a non-squarely terminated fiber may be intentional as in some biomedical spectroscopic sensors, or otherwise when exploiting the quick-interconnectivity potential of plastic fibers.  相似文献

Analytical expressions are presented for Manakov solitons perturbed by polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Comparison is made with computer simulations. Dispersion-managed solitons are also studied. It is concluded that at high bit rates solitons are superior to linear return-to-zero propagation with regard to PMD.  相似文献

A high-birefringence linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is written into a polarization-maintaining photosensitive fiber by ultraviolet (UV) beam through a linearly chirped phase mask. The effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) on Manakov solitons and dispersion managed solitons is treated analytically and by numerical simulation. In the analytic approach the internal motion of the Manakov soliton is represented as a damped harmonic oscillator. The PMD functions as a white noise source driving the oscillations. It is shown that the solitons can withstand PMD up to a certain instability threshold for which an analytic expression is obtained. This threshold is also evaluated for dispersion managed solitons. We study the decoherence of polarization-entangled photon pairs subject to the effects of polarization mode dispersion, the chief polarization decoherence mechanism in optical fibers. We show that fiber propagation reveals an intriguing interplay between the concepts of entanglement sudden death, decoherence-free subspaces, and nonlocality. We define the boundaries in which entanglement-based quantum communications protocols relying on fiber propagation can be applied.  相似文献

The derivation of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the Manakov-PMD equation is reviewed. It is shown that the usual scalar nonlinear Schrödinger equation can be derived from the Manakov-PMD equation when polarization mode dispersion is negligible and the signal is initially in a single polarization state as a function of time. Applications of the Manakov-PMD equation to studies of the interaction of the Kerr nonlinearity with polarization mode dispersion are then discussed.  相似文献

We demonstrate a scheme incorporating dual‐coupled microresonators through which mode interactions are intentionally introduced and controlled for Kerr frequency comb (microcomb) generation in the normal‐dispersion region. Microcomb generation, repetition rate selection, and mode locking are achieved with coupled silicon nitride microrings controlled via an on‐chip microheater. The proposed scheme shows for the first time a reliable design strategy for normal‐dispersion microcombs and may make it possible to generate microcombs in an extended wavelength range (e.g. in the visible) where normal material dispersion is likely to dominate.

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in fibre seriously limits the high-capacity optical fibre communication system. The measurement of PMD was realized by three methods — wavelength scanning method, modified OTDR method and modified York S-38 dispersion meter method. Different types of fibres have been measured using the above three methods and the results have been found to be consistent. Finally, we also found that the measured results of longer non-polarization-maintaining fibre satisfied the Maxwellian probability density function and the results of polarization maintaining fibre were derived. In this paper, the dispersion managed soliton (DMS) transmission equation is built on considering the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and filter control. The DMS transmission of filtering control in constant birefringence fibers is firstly analyzed by varitional method, from which the evolving rules of characteristical DMS parameters are obtained. Secondly, the stability of DMS transmission and its timing jitter are investigated in the random varying birefringence fibers with the conventional model of PMD. The results reveal that filter control DMS system has powerful robustness to PMD effects and DMS's timing jitter can be decreased considerably with the help of filters.  相似文献

We derive an analytical expression for the expected root-mean-square (rms) pulse broadening with considering the combined effects of all-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD), group velocity dispersion (GVD) and frequency chirp. It is shown that two commonly used first-order PMD compensators lose their efficiency quickly with chirp parameter increasing if GVD is ignored. When GVD is added, prechirp technique is helpful for the enhancement of PMD tolerance for both uncompensated case and first-order compensators when GVD and PMD coefficient satisfy some special relationship.  相似文献

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the effects which limit bit rates in optical communications systems. The statistics of PMD is complicated because it is multi-dimensional, however, many useful results have been obtained. Much work has been done, but the subject is not yet closed, as witnessed by the existence of this conference. In this talk I will review the way some statistical equations are treated. 自衍射效应在飞秒激光领域有非常重要的应用,如提高飞秒脉冲的时域对比度、作为自参考光谱干涉脉冲测量法的参考光、作为频率分辨光学开关法的信号光等.然而,具有较宽光谱带宽的飞秒激光在自衍射效应过程中产生的信号光存在明显的角色散,这给自衍射效应的应用带来不利影响.本文研究发现通过在自衍射效应的一个光路中加入等腰直角棱镜,当到棱镜的入射角为23fi时可以明显地减小飞秒激光脉冲自衍射信号的角色散.这就为以后将自衍射效应更好的应用到飞秒激光脉冲的研究提供了有用的参考.  相似文献

We describe how to calculate the Jones matrix transfer function of a fiber if its principal states of polarization and its differential group delay as functions of frequency are known. Using two counterexamples related to second-order polarization mode dispersion (PMD), we also show that a previous method used for the same purpose induces overestimation of second-order PMD effects by a factor of 2. Our new method is used to solve the problem for both counterexamples.  相似文献

The model for treating polarization mode dispersion in two channel (WDM) system is established. Based on this model, optical signal propagation behaviors in two channel WDM with polarization mode dispersion are numerically simulated. 为降低噪声对超声兰姆波检测信号的影响,提高信噪比和增加特征提取的精度,提出了一种赛利斯模型下分数阶微分方法用于超声兰姆波信号去噪.该方法对含噪声的兰姆波信号幅值谱进行各阶分数微分,用赛利斯分布作为待处幅值谱的模型,提出了幅值谱分数阶微分最大值和过零点与微分阶数的拟合三次关系式,建立了幅值谱特征参数的计算式来提取特征参数和重建原始信号的幅值谱,并结合相位谱重构去噪后的兰姆波信号.仿真结果表明,该方法可以有效地提高兰姆波信号甚至微弱兰姆波信号的信噪比,同时降低均方误差和平滑度.实验结果显示,与小波去噪和集合经验模态去噪方法相比,该方法在没有信号先验知识的情况下,可以更有效地去除兰姆波信号的噪声,同时更好地保留主信号的细节特征.因此,本文提出的方法可以有效地去除兰姆波检测信号中混入的噪声.  相似文献

High-Order Mode Dispersion Compensating Modules (HOM-DCM) using spatial optical transformations for mode conversion are reviewed. It is shown that mode transformers using this technology can be designed to transform the LP01 mode of SMF fibers to the LP02 mode of specially designed dispersion compensating High-Order Mode Fiber (HOMF), with typical insertion loss of ∼1 dB, and typical extinction ratio to other modes less than -20 dB. The HOMF itself can provide high negative dispersion [typically in the range of 400-600 ps/(nm km)], and high negative dispersion slope, allowing efficient compensation of all types of transmission fiber. Combining two mode transformers with HOMF and possibly trim fiber for fine-tuning, results, for example, in a HOM-DCM that compensates 100 km LEAF? fiber, with Insertion loss < 3.5 dB, and Multi-Path Interference (MPI) < -36 dB. MPI phenomena in HOM-DCMs is characterized, and shown to comprise both coherent and incoherent parts, and to result from both the mode transformers and fiber coupling within the HOMF. MPI values of < -36 dB have been shown to allow error free transmission of 10 Gb/s signals over up to 6000 km. Finally, a number of applications well suited to the properties of HOM-DCMs are reviewed.  相似文献
