An analytical methodology based on a field-effect transistor detector using carbon nanotubes (NTFET) coupled to a gas chromatograph has been developed for the speciation of the following aromatic compounds: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene, p-xylene and o-xylene (BTEX). This methodology combines the proven separation capability of gas chromatography (GC) with the potential for detection of a NTFET. The developed analyzer shows a high and stable analytical response upon repeated analysis of BTEX during 4 weeks, with detection limit less than 4 μg/L. The GC–NTFET system also shows a great suitability for actual monitoring of indoor atmospheres and no significant difference was observed between the results obtained by the developed analyzer and a more classical analytical methodology, namely gas chromatography–flame ionization detection (GC–FID).  相似文献

We show here that the enhanced electrochemical behaviour of carbon nanotubes towards the redox reactions of p-aminophenol does not stem from the innate properties of carbon nanotubes. Investigating the isolated effect of each component present within carbon nanotubes samples, which are the carbon nanotube, the graphitic and amorphous carbonaceous impurities and the metallic impurities, we have elucidated that solely the carbonaceous impurities, both graphitic and amorphous, significantly accelerate the electron transfer reaction of p-aminophenol at carbon nanotube surfaces.  相似文献

The possibility of purification of water-ethanol mixtures from the unwanted admixtures of higher alcohol, in particular, of the isomeric propanols, with the help of carbon nanomaterial is discussed. Results of quantum-chemical calculations of n-propanol and isopropanol on the surface of the single-walled carbon nanotube of the “armchair” type are presented. Investigations are carried out within the frame of model of molecular cluster using semi-empirical quantum chemical MNDO method. The possibility of adsorption of molecules of propanol isomers on the outer surface of nanotubes of small diameter as well the absence of adsorption of ethanol molecules on them is shown. It indicates the possibility of selective sorption with carbon nanotubes. Main geometric, electronic, and energy characteristics of obtained adsorption complexes are evaluated. A conclusion is made on the possibility to use carbon nanotubes for superfine purification of water-ethanol mixtures from the unwanted admixtures of n- and isopropanol.  相似文献

Changes in the thermogravimetrically determined oxidation behaviors of CVD-grown multiwalled carbon nanotubes with varying synthesis conditions are examined. Catalyst type and synthesis temperature are found to have a measurable impact upon nanotube stability, suggesting differing levels of crystalline perfection in the resulting nanotubes. The results provide evidence showing the catalytic effects of nanotube catalyst particles and their oxides upon the oxidation of nanotube carbon and graphite. The significance of thermogravimetric analysis as a characterization tool for carbon nanotubes is discussed.  相似文献

The photochemistry of diazomethane in toluene and p-xylene solutions was investigated. The reactions of methylene with toluene gave eight products. In the diazomethane p-xylene solution, p-ethyltoluene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,4-dimethylcyclohepatriene-1,3,5 and three unidentified compounds were found as products of the reaction of methylene with p-xylene. The relative rates of addition and insertion reaction of methylene with toluene and p-xylene have been calculated.  相似文献

We describe the preparation, characterization, and application of a composite film adsorbent based on blended agarose‐chitosan‐multiwalled carbon nanotubes for the preconcentration of selected nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs in aqueous samples before determination by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The composite film showed a high surface area (4.0258 m2/g) and strong hydrogen bonding between the multiwalled carbon nanotubes and agarose/chitosan matrix, which prevent adsorbent deactivation and ensure long‐term stability. Several parameters, such as sample pH, addition of salt, extraction time, desorption solvent, and concentration of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in the composite film were optimized using a one‐factor‐at‐time approach. The optimum extraction conditions obtained were as follows: isopropanol as conditioning solvent, 10 mL of sample solution at pH 2, extraction time of 30 min, stirring speed of 600 rpm, 100 μL of isopropanol as desorption solvent, desorption time of 5 min under ultrasonication, and 0.4% w/v of composite film. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curve showed good linearity in the range of 1–500 ng/mL (r2 = 0.997–0.999), and good limits of detection (0.89–8.05 ng/mL) were obtained with good relative standard deviations of < 4.59% (n = 3) for the determination of naproxen, diclofenac sodium salt, and mefenamic acid drugs.  相似文献

如果能在无需聚合物或共价官能团辅助的条件下, 将多壁碳纳米管(MWNTs)高浓度地分散在乙醇中, 那么向各种复合材料引入MWNTs的过程就会更加便捷. 为此, 制备了多种含有表面活性剂的多壁碳纳米管乙醇悬浮液并对比考查了它们的稳定性. 非离子表面活性剂Triton X-100 和Tween 65显示出了在乙醇中分散悬浮高浓度MWNTs的能力, 能够使1.0 g·L-1 MWNTs乙醇悬浮液的上层清液经240 h后浓度仍分别在0.50和0.35 g·L-1以上. 这样长时间稳定的、没有聚合物或共价官能团辅助的MWNTs乙醇悬浮液, 其浓度比文献报道的值高. 进一步探讨了这些非离子表面活性剂分子结构对于分散MWNTs的优势, 并直观给出了其吸附于碳纳米管表面的可能形式. X射线光电子能谱和透射电子显微镜的表征结果都证实了表面活性剂分子吸附于碳纳米管表面.  相似文献

The ability of Laponite to stabilize aqueous suspensions of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was investigated with the help of analytical centrifugation, microscopic image analysis, and measurements of electrical conductivity of hybrid Laponite+MWCNT suspensions. The impact of nanotube concentration C(n) (0.0025-0.5 wt%) and Laponite/MWCNTs ratio X (varied within 0-1 wt/wt) on the properties of Laponite+MWCNT hybrid suspensions was discussed. It was observed that sonication of MWCNTs at critical minimal concentration of Laponite X(c)≈0.25±0.05 resulted in efficient dispersion and formation of stabilized suspensions of individual nanotubes. The stabilization of nanotubes in the presence of Laponite was explained by adsorption of Laponite particles and formation of a hydrophilic charged shell on the surface of nanotubes. Increase of MWCNT concentration above the critical value resulted in percolation and formation of spatially extended electrically conductive networks of particles.  相似文献

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were oxidized by sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution and were employed as adsorbents to study their characterizations and adsorption performance of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and p-xylene (abbreviated as BTEX) in an aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of CNTs such as purity, structure and surface nature were greatly improved after oxidation, which significantly enhanced BTEX adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity of CNT(NaOCl) increased with contact time and initial adsorbate concentration, but changed insignificantly with solution ionic strength and pH. A comparative study on the BTEX adsorption revealed that the CNT(NaOCl) had better BTEX adsorption as compared to CNTs and granular activated carbon. This suggests that the CNT(NaOCl) are efficient BTEX adsorbents and that they possess good potential for BTEX removal in wastewater treatment.  相似文献

Transformations of aromatic and aliphatic organic substances in anhydrous trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) at room temperature were studied. TFA was found to be capable of activating molecular oxygen dissolved in it. This activated oxygen endows the acid with strong oxidizer properties. Transformations of organic substances in TFA involved the formation of peroxo compounds, and alkylaromatic molecules were only oxidized at the benzene ring, side chains remaining intact. The transformations of toluene and p-xylene in trifluoroacetic acid were similar in a way to the biochemical oxidation of these substrates by mono-and dioxygenases. Mechanisms were suggested for the oxidation of toluene, p-xylene, and propylene by active oxygen in superacids.  相似文献

The viscosities of the mixtures of 1,2-dibromoethane + cyclohexane, + benzene, +toluene, +o-xylene, +m-xylene, and +p-xylene have been measured at 298.15 and 308.15 K as a function of composition. The viscosity data have been analysed in the light of approaches developed by Hind and Grunberg . The electrochemical method was based on open circuit accumulation of lead ions onto a 5-Br-PADAP-modified multiwalled carbon nanotube electrode and then their anodic stripping voltammetric determination. The linear range for Pb(II) ions was from 0.9 to 114.6 μg L−1. The detection limit and relative standard deviation were found to be 0.1 μg L−1 and 1.6%, respectively. This method demonstrates the powerful application of carbon nanotubes in the field of mercury-free electrodes in voltammetric stripping analysis.

A carbon-coated fiber for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been prepared from powdered activated carbon (PAC) and a fused-silica fiber. Scanning electron microscopy of the coating revealed the carbon particles were uniformly distributed on the surface of the fiber substrate. Efficient extraction of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene, and o-xylene) and halocarbons (chloroform, trichloroethylene, and carbon tetrachloride), with short extraction and desorption times, was achieved by use of the coated fiber. The maximum working temperature of the coated fiber was 300 °C and the lifetime was over 140 desorption operations at 260 °C. Limits of quantification (LOQ) of the SPME method for the eight analytes ranged from 0.01 to 0.94 μg L−1, and relative standard deviations (RSD) were below 7.2% (n=6). Recoveries were 87.9–113.4% when the method was applied to the analysis of BTEX and the halocarbons in real aqueous samples. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

Abstract

The gas chromatographic method proposed by us for simple and accurate measurement of isothermal phase equilibria has been applied to the binary mixtures formed by alkylbenzenes amongst themselves. Results on the binary mixtures of: benzene - toluene, toluene + o-xylene, toluene + p-xylene, toluene + ethylbenzene, ethylbenzene + o-xylene and ethylbenzene + p-xylene are presented in this paper. The present measurements on benzene + toluene system at 40°C are in good agreement with the isothermal phase equilibrium data available in the literature.  相似文献

The nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene was carried out on the surfaces of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) initiated by an MWNT‐supported initiator multiwalled carbon nanotube–2″,2″,6″,6″‐tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (MWNT–Tempo). The content of polystyrene grafted from the surface was controlled by changes in the polymerization conditions, such as the reaction times or the ratios of monomers to initiators. The obtained polystyrene‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT–PSs) were further used to initiate the polymerization of 4‐vinylpyridine to get polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine)‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT–PS‐b‐P4VPs). In contrast to unmodified MWNTs, MWNT–PSs had relatively good dispersibility in various organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, CHCL3, and o‐dichlorobenzene. The structures and properties of MWNT–PSs and MWNT–PS‐b‐P4VPs were characterized and studied with several methods, including thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet–visible, and transmission electron microscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Continuous real-time monitoring of the nanotube concentration in aqueous solution using UV-Vis spectroscopy allows quantitative comparison of the stability of different types of nanotube dispersions. Systematic investigation of the effects of nanotube length and functionalisation for thin multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) has revealed that shorter MWNT form more stable dispersions than longer nanotubes of the same diameter. MWNT shortened to an average length of approximately 1 microm form stable dispersions in water with concentrations up to 0.013 mg ml(-1) in the absence of surfactants or solubilising functional groups. The introduction of carboxylic or thiol groups on the surface of shortened nanotubes further increases the stability of MWNT dispersions (up to 0.24 mg ml(-1)). The introduction of surfactant or surface charge on MWNT has contrasting effects on functionalised and non-functionalised nanotubes, destabilising and stabilising their dispersions, respectively.  相似文献

We present a rigorous investigation on elution behaviors of ultrasonically shortened multiwalled carbon nanotubes in size‐exclusion chromatography. The size separation of five carbon nanotube samples that underwent ultrasonic shortening for varying lengths of time revealed the existence of three kinds of carbon species: large nanotubes, small nanotubes, and amorphous carbon species. Separation of the three different carbon species was confirmed by SEM analyses on the fractionated eluates and also by light scattering/UV absorbance double detection. The chromatographic peak intensity ratio between the large and small nanotubes suggested an increased amount of small carbon nanotubes upon longer mechanical treatment time. The effect of the concentration of carbon nanotube dispersion on elution behavior was examined, and the elution volume of the shortened nanotubes was found to decrease upon dilution while that of the large nanotubes showed the opposite tendency. Unusual elution behaviors of the multiwalled carbon nanotubes were also observed by altering the flow rate, and these behaviors could be explained by the longer equilibration time taken for large nanotubes to access the pores of the packing materials and a possible morphology change of small carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

Excess volumes of mixing, VE, for binary mixtures of 1,2-dichloroethane with benzene, toluene, o?, m?, and p-xylenes have been determined at 308.15 K over the complete composition range. VE is positive for all these mixtures and varies in the order m-xylene >o-xylene >p-xylene > benzene > toluene. The experimental data have been analyzed in terms of the Prigogine's average potential cell model coupled with Balescu's theory.
