Gaussian fluctuations of eigenvalues in log-gas ensemble: Bulk case I

We study the central limit theorem of the k-th eigenvalue of a random matrix in the log-gas ensemble with an external potential V = q2mx2 m. More precisely, let Pn(d H) = Cne-nTrV(H)dH be the distribution of n × n Hermitian random matrices, ρV(x)dx the equilibrium measure, where Cnis a normalization constant, V(x) = q2mx2m with q2m=Γ(m)Γ(12)/Γ(2m+1/2), and m ≥ 1. Let x1 ≤···≤ xnbe the eigenvalues of H. Let k := k(n) be such that k(n)/n∈ [a, 1- a] for n large enough, where a ∈(0,12).Define G(s) :=∫s-1ρV(x)dx,- 1 ≤ s ≤ 1,and set t := G-1(k/n). We prove that, as n →∞,xk- t log n1/2 2π21/2nρV(t)→ N(0, 1)in distribution. Multi-dimensional central limit theorem is also proved. Our results can be viewed as natural extensions of the bulk central limit theorems for GUE ensemble established by J. Gustavsson in 2005.     

Additive preservers of Drazin invertible operators with bounded index

Let B(X) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on an infinite-dimensional complex or real Banach space X. Given an integer n ≥ 1, we show that an additive surjective map Φ on B(X)preserves Drazin invertible operators of index non-greater than n in both directions if and only if Φ is either of the form Φ(T) = αATA~(-1) or of the form Φ(T) = αBT~*B~(-1) where α is a non-zero scalar,A:X → X and B:X~*→ X are two bounded invertible linear or conjugate linear operators.     

Normality concerning the sequence of functions

Let {f_n} be a sequence of functions meromorphic in a domain D, let {h_n} be a sequence of holomorphic functions in D, such that that h(z)→h(z), where h.(z)→0 is holomorphic in D, and let k be a positive integer. If for each n∈N~+, f_n(z)≠0 and f_n~(k)(z)-h_n(z) has at most k distinct zeros(ignoring multiplicity) in D, then {f_n} is normal in D.

OD-Characterization of all simple groups whose orders are less than 10

Let M be a simple group whose order is less than 10⁸. In this paper, we prove that if G is a finite group with the same order and degree pattern as M, then the following statements hold: (a) If M ≠ A₁₀, U₄(2), then G ≅ M; (b) If M = A₁₀, then G ≅ A₁₀ or J₂ × Z₃; (c) If M = U₄(2), then G is isomorphic to a 2-Frobenius group or U₄(2). In particular, all simple groups whose orders are less than 10⁸ but A₁₀ and U₄(2) are OD-characterizable. As a consequence of this result, we can give a positive answer to a conjecture put forward by W. J. Shi and J. X. Bi in 1990 [Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Vol. 1456, 171–180].     

Homotopy exponents of Stiefel manifolds in the stable range

Let p be an odd prime.For the Stiefel manifold W_(m+k,k)=SU(m+k)/SU(m),we obtain an upper bound of its p-primary homotopy exponent in the stable range k≤m with k≤(p-1)~2+1.

Let f(z) be a meromorphic function in the complex plane, whose zeros have multiplicity at least k + 1(k ≥ 2). If sin z is a small function with respect to f(z), then f~(k)(z)-P(z) sin z has infinitely many zeros in the complex plane, where P(z) is a nonzero polynomial of deg(P(z)) ≠ 1.

Let X be a Banach space, S(X) - x ε X : #x02016; = 1 be the unit sphere of X.The parameter, modulus of W^*-convexity, W^*(ε) = inf <(x − y)/2, f_x> : x, y S(X), x − y ≥ ε, f_x Δ_x , where 0 ≤ ε ≤ 2 and Δ_x S(X^*) be the set of norm 1 supporting functionals of S(X) at x, is investigated_ The relationship among uniform nonsquareness, uniform normal structure and the parameter W^*(ε) are studied, and a known result is improved. The main result is that for a Banach space X, if there is ε, where 0 < ε < 1/2, such that W^*(1 + ε) > ε/2 where W^*(1 + ε) = lim_→ε W^* (1 + ), then X has normal structure.

Let X=Sp A be an affine scheme over a perfect field k of positive caracteristic. The functor D(k)-mod (W(A), (w(?)) is the unipotent part of the affine commutative free group generated by X (W is the ring of Witt-vectors and D the ring of Dieudonné). If X is a monoïd-scheme, this free group has a structure of ring scheme. In particular, if X=0 _k ^x , we obtain a new proof of the theorem of decomposition of the universal ring.

Context-free grammars for triangular arrays

We consider context-free grammars of the form G = {f → fb1+b2+1ga1+a2, g → fb1 ga1+1},where ai and bi are integers sub ject to certain positivity conditions. Such a grammar G gives rise to triangular arrays {T(n, k)}0≤k≤n satisfying a three-term recurrence relation. Many combinatorial sequences can be generated in this way. Let Tn (x) =∑nk=0T(n, k)xk. Based on the differential operator with respect to G, we define a sequence of linear operators Pn such that Tn+1(x) = Pn(Tn(x)). Applying the characterization of real stability preserving linear operators on the multivariate polynomials due to Borcea and Br?ndén, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the operator Pn to be real stability preserving for any n. As a consequence, we are led to a sufficient condition for the real-rootedness of the polynomials defined by certain triangular arrays, obtained by Wang and Yeh.Moreover, as special cases we obtain grammars that lead to identities involving the Whitney numbers and the Bessel numbers.
