We report the experimental high electric field phase diagram of a nematic liquid crystal which exhibits a large negative dielectric anisotropy. We measure simultaneously the birefringence (Δn) and the dielectric constant (epsilon) at various applied fields as functions of the local temperature of an aligned sample. We also measure the higher harmonics of the electrical response of the medium. The following experimental results are noted: (i) enhancement of orientational order parameter S in the nematic phase due to both the Kerr effect and quenching of director fluctuations; (ii) enhancement in the paranematic to nematic transition temperature (TPN) with field; (iii) divergence of the order parameter susceptibility beyond the tricritical point as measured by third harmonic electrical signal; (iv) a small second harmonic electrical signal which also diverges near TPN, indicating the presence of polarised domains. Our measurements show that ΔTPN(= TPN(E)-TNI(0)) varies linearly with |E| whereas the Landau de Gennes theory predicts a dependence on E2. It is argued that the quenching of director fluctuations by the field makes the dominant contribution to all the observations, including the thermodynamics of the transition.  相似文献

We have employed a simple Galerkin-approximation scheme to calculate nonequilibrium temperature and concentration fluctuations in a binary fluid subjected to a temperature gradient with realistic boundary conditions. When a fluid mixture is driven outside thermal equilibrium, there are two instability mechanisms, namely a Rayleigh (stationary) and a Hopf (oscillatory) instability, causing long-ranged fluctuations. The competition of these two mechanisms causes the structure factor associated with the temperature fluctuations to exhibit two maxima as a function of the wave number q of the fluctuations, in particular, close to the convective instability. In the presence of thermally conducting but impermeable walls the intensity of the temperature fluctuations vanishes as q goes to zero, while the intensity of the concentration fluctuations remains finite in the limit of vanishing q. Finally, we propose a simpler small-Lewis-number approximation scheme, which is useful to represent nonequilibrium concentration fluctuations for mixtures with positive separation ratio, even close to (but below) the convective instability.  相似文献

We show that defect-free splay-bend textures are less energetic compared to uniform states in liquid-crystalline phases that possess both quadrupolar (nematic) and octupolar (tetrahedratic) order. This is because, in such systems, there is a symmetry-allowed linear gradient term in the energy. Another unusual feature of these splay-bend textures is the fact that they have a non-homogeneous, space-dependent free-energy density. These results may help clarify some mysterious features noted for the B7 liquid-crystal phase formed by achiral banana-shaped molecules.  相似文献

The paper studies nonlinear hydrodynamic fluctuations by the methods of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. The generalized Fokker-Planck equation for the distribution function of coarse-grained densities of conserved quantities is derived from the Liouville equation and then is investigated by using the gradient expansions in the flux correlation matrix. We have obtained the functional-differential Fokker-Planck equation describing the nonlinear hydrodynamic fluctuations in spatially nonuniform systems to second order in gradients of coarse-grained fluctuating fields. An outline of the derivation of Fokker-Planck equations containing the Burnett terms is also given. The explicit coordinate representation for the hydrodynamic Fokker-Planck equation is discussed in the case of one-component simple fluid. The general scheme of a change of coarse-grained functional variables is developed for hydrodynamic Fokker-Planck equations. The corresponding transformation rules are found for “drift” terms, “diffusion coefficients” and thermodynamic forces. The dynamical equations and stationary conditions for averages of functions (functionals) of hydrodynamic fields are discussed by using the Fokker-Planck operators acting on such functions. The explicit form of these operators are found for various sets of fluctuating fields. As an application of the formalism the calculation of the stationary correlation functions is presented for a simple nonequilibrium steady state.  相似文献

We examine the properties of steady states in systems which interact at the boundary with a nonequilibrium environment. The examination is based on a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation, the structure of which is determined by the fact that it also governs the time evolution of the equilibrium fluctuations of the system. The nonlinearities in the Fokker-Planck equation may have two origins: thermodynamic nonlinearities which arise if the thermodynamic potential is not a bilinear function of the state variables, and nonlinear mode coupling which arises if the transport coefficients depend on the state. While these nonlinearities have only a small effect on the equilibrium fluctuations of a system away from critical points, they are shown to be important for the determination of fluctuations about nonequilibrium steady states. In particular the state dependence of the transport coefficients may lead to deviations from local equilibrium and to a breakdown of detail balance. An explicit formula for the time correlations of fluctuations about the nonequilibrium steady state is obtained. The formula leads to long-range correlations in fluids in the presence of a temperature gradient. The result is compared with earlier approaches to the same problem. Finally, we study the linear response to external forces and obtain a generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation formula relating the response functions with the nonequilibrium correlation functions.  相似文献

We present the basic formulas for a unified treatment of the correlation functions of the hydrodynamic variables in a fluid between two horizontal plates which is exposed to a stationary heat flux in the presence of a gravity field (Rayleigh-Bénard system). Our analysis is based on fluctuating hydrodynamics. In this paper (I) we show that in the nonequilibrium stationary state the hydrodynamic fluctuations evolve on slow and fast time scales that are widely separated. A time scale perturbation theory is used to diagonalize the hydrodynamic operator partially. This enables us to derive the eigenvalue equations for the nonequilibrium hydrodynamic modes. Therein we take into account the variation of the macroscopic quantities with position. The correlation functions are formally expressed in terms of the nonequilibrium modes. In paper II the slow hydrodynamic modes (viscous and viscoheat modes) will be determined explicitly for ideal heat-conducting plates with stick boundary conditions and used to compute the slow part of the correlation functions; in paper III the fast hydrodynamic modes (sound modes) will be explicitly determined for stick boundary conditions and used to compute the fast part of the correlation functions. In these papers we will also compute the shape and intensity of the lines measured in light scattering experiments.  相似文献

We present experimental studies on the effect of strong electric fields on the nematogen p-cyanophenyl p-n-heptyl benzoate which has the strongly polar cyano end group and a large positive dielectric anisotropy. We use a local temperature measurement to take into account heating effects and an electrical impedance analysis to determine both the dielectric constant () and the resistance (R) of the sample. We also measure the higher harmonic responses of the medium. The new results obtained in this study are: (i) a detailed temperature dependence of the terms which describe (a) the quenching of macroscopic thermal fluctuations of the nematic director and (b) the enhancement of the orientational order parameter due to Kerr effect, (ii) clear evidence for the critical divergence of susceptibility as reflected in the third harmonic signal, (iii) an unusual enhancement of the conductivity which shows a large peak just below the critical point , (iv) a significant peak in the second harmonic signal at and (v) evidence for a field induced nematic-nematic transition well inside the nematic range. We argue that the results (iii)-(v) indicate the presence of polar short range order in the medium and hence support a molecular model in which such an order has been proposed. We construct a formal mode coupling theory for hydrodynamic systems which includes contributions from all powers of the hydrodynamic variables. This theory is applied to nonequilibrium steady state systems. A generalization of the local equilibrium distribution is used to describe the nonequilibrium state. This distribution independently constrains all moments of the hydrodynamic variables. The infinite hierarchy of equations for the moments of the hydrodynamic variables is truncated using an inverse system size expansion. Explicit results are obtained for the time correlation functions of fluids with a linear temperature gradient or a linear shear. These results agree with previous studies of these steady states.  相似文献

The orientational dynamics of rod-like particles with permanent (electric or magnetic) dipole moments in a plane Couette shear flow is investigated using mesoscopic relaxation equations combined with a generalized Landau free energy. The free energy contribution due to the coupling between average alignment and dipole orientation is derived on a microscopic basis. Numerical results of the resulting eight-dimensional dynamical system are presented for the case of longitudinal dipoles and thermodynamic conditions where the equilibrium state is a (polar or non-polar) nematic. Solution diagrams reveal presence of a large variety of periodic, transient chaotic, and chaotic dynamic states of the average alignment and dipole moment, respectively, appearing as a function of Deborah number and tumbling parameter. Compared to rods without dipoles we observe a significant preference of out-of-plane kayaking-tumbling states and, generally, a higher sensitivity to the initial conditions including bistability. We also demonstrate that the average (electric) dipole moment characterizing most of the observed states yields electrodynamic (magnetic) fields of measurable strength.  相似文献

The effect of a surface electric field produced by ionic adsorption on the molecular orientation of a nematic liquid crystal sample is analyzed. The eigenvalue problem for a semi-infinite medium is analytically solved both for strong and weak anchoring situations. The threshold instabilities are numerically determined and it is shown that the homeotropic pattern can be destabilized also in the situation of strong anchoring. The dependence of the threshold field on the anchoring strength and on the surface polarization is determined by taking into account also the coupling of the quadrupolar component of the flexoelectric coefficient with the field gradient. We show how the ideas of the fluctuation-dissipation theory can be used to calculate spatial correlations in interacting systems away from equilibrium. The only spatially dependent dissipative process considered is diffusion, and spatial correlations are generated by the nonlocal spatial dependence of the chemical potential. The results are the lowest order in a hierarchy of generalized hydrodynamic type calculations applicable to nonequilibrium systems. We derive equations for the density correlation functions at stationary state supported by diffusive fluxes and show that they have the local equilibrium form. The static correlation function is obtained from the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, which we show to be equivalent to the Ornstein-Zernike integral equation. At equilibrium we demonstrate that the dynamical structure factor obtained by these methods includes the expected wave-vector dependent diffusion constant. Finally we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for local equilibrium to obtain at a stationary state and show by explicit calculation that chemical processes can give rise to significant nonequilibrium correlations.  相似文献

We measure the azimuthal anchoring energy of the nematic 5CB on sinusoidal holographic unidimensional and bidimensional gratings. We find that the anchoring strength is almost the same for all of the gratings and up to one order of magnitude stronger than expected by the topographic mechanism proposed by Berreman. We observe strong memory effects which dominate both the elastic anchoring and the easy axis gliding. We show that these memory effects limit from below the anchoring energy and are the main obstacle in the realization of substrates with weak anchoring conditions. We analyse the influence of adsorbed ions and the resulting surface electric field and its gradient on the anchoring properties of nematics with ionic conductivity. We take into account two physical mechanisms for the coupling of the nematic director with the surface electric field: (i) the dielectric anisotropy and (ii) the coupling of the quadrupolar component of the flexoelectric coefficient with the field gradient. It is shown that for sufficiently large fields near saturated coverage of the adsorbed ions, there can be a spontaneous curvature distortion in the cell even when the anchoring energy is infinitely strong. We also discuss the director distortion when the anchoring energy of the surface is finite. We use a fluctuating hydrodynamics (FH) approach to study the fluctuations of the hydrodynamic variables of a thermotropic nematic liquid crystal (NLC)in a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS). This NESS is produced by an externally imposed temperature gradient and a uniform gravity field. We calculate analytically the equilibrium and nonequilibrium seven modes of the NLC in this NESS. These modes consist of a pair of sound modes, one orientation mode of the director and two visco-heat modes formed by the coupling of the shear and thermal modes. We find that the nonequilibrium effects produced by the external gradients only affect the longitudinal modes. The analytic expressions for the visco-heat modes show explicitly how the heat and shear modes of the NLC are coupled. We show that they may become propagative, a feature that also occurs in the simple fluid and suggests the realization of new experiments. We show that in equilibrium and in the isotropic limit of the NLC, our modes reduce to well-known results in the literature. For the NESS considered we point out the differences between our our modes and those reported by other authors. We close the paper by proposing the calculation of other physical quantities that lend themselves to a more direct comparison with possible experiments for this system.  相似文献

Using a light-beating technique we have measured the damping time of thermal fluctuations of the nematic director for the so called cylindrical or calamitic nematic (NC) phase of the lyotropic system K-laurate/decanol/. By varying the scattering angle in suitable geometries, we have been able to estimate the orientational diffusivities associated to the three pure deformations of splay, twist and bend. A former measurement made in the disk-like ND phase of the same system yielded a large deviation between the splay and twist diffusivities. The effect was then attributed to induced flows, or backflow, which could be responsible for the reduction of the splay viscosity. In fact, this is the analogous effect, for disks, to the one recognized since long time ago arriving for rod-like molecules in a classical nematic, though in this case it is associated with bend deformations. The analogy comes about thanks to the interchange of the role played by disks and cylinders for, respectively, splay and bend fluctuations. The measurements reported here provide a new test on the applicability of the backflow model to a nematic system composed of micelles, that is, aggregates made of amphiphilic (surfactant) molecules, in its cylindrical-like variant, i.e. the NC phase. In addition, the comparative study made here with the previous results existing in the literature for the ND phase, allows us to conjecture on structural issues concerning lyotropic nematics. The general formulas, derived in a previous paper, are used to calculate the correlation functions of the hydrodynamic variables in the Rayleigh-Bénard system. The behavior of the correlation functions on a time scale slow compared to that of sound propagation is determined, using systematically nonequilibrium hydrodynamic eigenmodes. These (slow) eigenmodes of the linearized Boussinesq equations in the presence of gravity and a temperature gradient are the viscous and the visco-heat modes. They are determined for ideal heat-conducting plates with stick boundary conditions. The visco-heat modes are found to behave qualitatively different from those obtained with slip boundary conditions. Using these eigenmodes, the slow part of the correlation functions can be determined explicitly. On a small length scale, as probed by light scattering, we recover the same expression for the Rayleigh line as quoted in the literature. On larger length scales, as probed by microwaves, the coupling of gravity to the temperature gradient gives rise to a convective instability (heating form below) or to propagating visco-heat modes (heating from above). The corresponding correlation functions and the Rayleigh line are calculated and discussed.  相似文献

The Frank elasticity constants which describe splay (K 1), twist (K 2), and bend (K 3) distortion modes are investigated for 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) in the nematic liquid crystal. The calculations rest on statistical-mechanical approaches where the absolute values of K i (i=1,2,3) are dependent on the direct correlation function (DCF) of the corresponding nematic state. The DCF was determined using the pair correlation function by solving the Ornstein-Zernike equation. The pair correlation function, in turn, was obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) trajectory. Three different approaches for calculations of the elasticity constants were employed based on different level of approximation about the orientational order and molecular correlations. The best agreement with experimental values of elasticity constants was obtained in a model where the full orientational distribution function was used. In addition we have investigated the approximation about spherical distribution of the intermolecular vectors in the nematic phase, often used in derivation of various mean-field theories and employed here for the construction of the DCF. We found that this assumption is not strictly valid, in particular a strong deviation from the isotropic distribution is observed for short intermolecular distances. Thermodynamic fluctuations in systems that are in nonequilibrium steady states are always spatially long ranged, in contrast to fluctuations in thermodynamic equilibrium. In the present paper we consider a fluid subjected to a stationary temperature gradient. Two different physical mechanisms have been identified by which the temperature gradient causes long-ranged fluctuations. One cause is the presence of couplings between fluctuating fields. Secondly, spatial variation of the strength of random forces, resulting from the local version of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, has also been shown to generate long-ranged fluctuations. We evaluate the contributions to the long-ranged temperature fluctuations due to both mechanisms. While the inhomogeneously correlated Langevin noise does lead to long-ranged fluctuations, in practice, they turn out to be negligible as compared to nonequilibrium temperature fluctuations resulting from the coupling between temperature and velocity fluctuations.  相似文献

We study numerically the director and orientational order parameter configurations in a nematic liquid crystal around a two-dimensional spherical particle on the basis of the tensor order parameter formalism. To properly account for the large length scale difference between the particle and the accompanying orientational defect, we devise an adaptive grid scheme in which the lattice spacing is automatically and locally adjusted in response to the spatial gradient of the orientational order parameter. This adaptive grid scheme is useful in studying dynamical as well as static orientational structures. We present a simulation result which shows how a hedgehog defect of topological charge -1 becomes unstable in two dimensions, and splits into a defect pair of topological charge -1/2, located symmetrically around the particle.
