Abstract

A techno-economic study on the outside plant costs of fiber-to-the-X infrastructures is presented in this article. Standardized passive optical network and active optical network technologies, implemented in fiber-to-the-home architectures, are presented/compared in terms of costs. Future architectures based on passive optical networks are investigated, their outside plant infrastructure, and corresponding costs are reviewed. Cost comparisons of fiber-to-the-X infrastructures reveal significant differences. Besides fiber-to-the-node being the less costly, it is shown that the cost of high splitting ratio passive optical network fiber-to-the-home infrastructures is not increasing linearly with the splitting ratio. The highest splitting ratio is not always the one with the largest savings percentage. Referring to current and future fiber-to-the-home access network architectures/technologies, the flexibility of wavelength division multiplexing/time division multiplexing passive optical networks is estimated to reach a 40% reduction in outside plant cost compared with the home run architecture.  相似文献

In this article, we present the comparative analysis of various optical packet switch architectures. The comparison is done on the basis of bursty traffic arrival and the optical cost of various optical components used to build that switch. The architectures chosen for the analysis were previously proposed by us and their performance was evaluated only for the uniform random traffic arrival. Hence, this article can be considered as the cumulative and effective extension of the previous works. The computer simulations are performed to obtain the packet loss probability and average delay in presence of bursty traffic.  相似文献

Some recent results on all-optical packet-switching and broadcasting networks are presented. The performance evaluation problem of packet-switching transparent optical networks with deflection routing is addressed. Transmission error arguments show how, for a given optical bit rate, the size of an all-optical nonregenerative multishop network is limited by the accumulation of noise and distortion in the optical fiber channel. Time-domain multiple access techniques are exploited in novel architectures based on recently proposed all-optical sampling gates to realize the matching of the ultrahigh optical speed allowed by the large bandwidth of the fiber with the lower speed of the electronic components needed at the user ends. These architectures allow great simplification of the node structure in the considered all-optical multihop and broadcast networks.  相似文献

This paper gives an overview and background of optical access network deployment in Croatia. Optical access network development in Croatia has been put into a global as well as in the European Union context. All the challenges and the driving factors for optical access networks deployment are considered. Optical access network architectures that have been deployed by most of the investors in Croatian telecommunication market are presented, as well as the architectures that are in early phase of deployment. The use of linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings as dispersive delay line elements in optical true time-delay beamformers is investigated. Two different dispersive prism beamforming architectures are considered as is their impact on the grating specifications. Microwave double-sideband and single-sideband characterization is carried out on gratings suitable for both architectures with an emphasis on the group delay ripple of single and cascaded gratings. Results indicate that commercially available gratings are suitable for beamforming applications.  相似文献

The benefits of using multi-granularity switching to reduce the number of ports, including both electronic and optical ports, have been investigated. A novel multi-layer ring architecture with multiple switches is proposed and two general equations to count the number of ports are derived. Comparisons are made between the multi-layer multi-granularity switching (MM-XC) architecture and the reported architectures: multi-switching (M-XC) and single switching (S-XC) architectures. The results show that the M-XC or S-XC architectures can be deduced from the MM-XC architecture and the latter architecture can achieve more considerable savings of the port count compared to the former.  相似文献

The motivation for a digital optical computer is based on the shortcomings inherent in of electronic computers. Optics has solutions to offer especially in interconnects. Devices based on nonlinear optical effects are still in the early stages of their development. Hence at an intermediate stage hybrid opto-electronic computers might emerge. Optical packet switching (OPS) technology can rapidly deliver the enormous network bandwidth and offer high-speed data rate and format transparency. In this paper we propose a novel architecture using all-optical tunable wavelength converters (TWCs) and fiber delay-lines (FDLs) to address the contention problem for OPS in wavelength and time domains. This architecture improves packet switching speed but significantly decreases the number of optical switches comparing with existing architectures. A simulation is also conducted to evaluate the performance of the architecture. The simulation results show that the packet loss probability of this architecture is lower than general architectures.  相似文献

Optical parametric oscillators are coherent light sources showing properties that are not encountered with usual laser sources. This article deals with optical architectures that take advantage of the specific properties of the three-wave mixing parametric interaction. We show that optical cavities can be specifically designed to increase either the optical conversion of the parametric process or to reduce dramatically the emitted line width. A flexible array waveguide evanescent coupler for card-to-backplane optical interconnects is presented. The proposed technique eliminates traditional 90 degrees out-of-plane turns and local waveguide termination of multidrop bus architectures that hinder conventional card-to-backplane optical interconnections. Evanescent coupling between array waveguide ribbons has been successfully demonstrated. Further experiments have been performed to quantify array waveguide coupling length versus transfer efficiency and waveguide misalignment tolerance. Preliminary optical interconnect testing has demonstrated 2.5GHz operation of the coupler ribbons. The successful high-speed coupling confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method for high-speed computing systems.  相似文献
