This paper focuses on three junior high school mathematics teachers and their knowledge of the nature of definitions. The mathematical context of exponentiation is used as a springboard for discussing two aspects of definitions: their corresponding domains and the distinction and relationships between definitions, proofs, and theorems. Through interviews it was shown that some teachers are not aware that definitions and domains are intrinsically connected and some teachers believe that definitions may be proved. Findings also indicate that knowledge of the nature of definitions may be dependent on the context.  相似文献

To contribute to an understanding of the nature of teachers’ mathematical knowledge and its role in teaching, the case study reported in this article investigated a teacher’s conception of a metamathematical concept, definition, and her use of examples in doing and teaching mathematics. Using an enactivist perspective on mathematical knowledge, the authors give an account of the case of Lily, a prospective, then beginning, teacher who conceived of mathematical definition as an object with particular form and function and engaged in purposeful, specialized use of examples when doing and teaching mathematics. Lily’s case illustrates how a teacher’s interpretation of examples (as exemplifications or single instances) and conception of the form and function of definitions can influence her doing and teaching mathematics. An implication is that teacher preparation should foster teachers’ abilities to use examples purposefully to provide students with rich opportunities to engage in mathematical processes such as defining.  相似文献

This paper was triggered by an authentic conversation between two mathematics teacher educators who debated whether a constant function is a periodic function, within the framework of a professional development program for secondary mathematics teachers. Their initial conversation led to deep mathematical and pedagogical musing surrounding mathematical definitions. In this paper, we present various aspects of a mathematical definition, including the role and nature of definitions in school mathematics, critical versus preferable features of a definition, and the arbitrariness underlying the choice of definition. We discuss the interplay between logical and pedagogical considerations with respect to definitions, drawing on the definition of a periodic function as an example.  相似文献

In this study, I analyzed and compared definitions of special quadrilaterals presented in the US and Turkish secondary school mathematics textbooks. To this end, seven textbooks from each country were examined based on the following features of mathematical definitions: form of presentation and mathematical correctness, minimality, the nature of definitions, and the reference sets and geometric properties used in definitions. The results showed that Turkish textbooks include both procedural and structural definitions of quadrilaterals, while procedural definitions are non-existent in the US mathematics textbooks. Meanwhile, all structural definitions and all procedural definitions excluding one are mathematically correct. Besides, in both country textbooks, there exists more number of minimal and inclusive definitions compared to the non-minimal and exclusive ones. Finally, textbooks from both countries mainly use quadrilaterals as reference sets and sides as geometric properties in definitions of special quadrilaterals. The results bring to light the varied opportunities provided to the students by the US and Turkish textbooks to experience and learn definitions of special quadrilaterals.  相似文献

This paper addresses a topic within university mathematics education which has been somewhat underexplored: the teaching practices actually used by university mathematics teachers when giving lectures. The study investigates the teaching practices of seven Swedish university teachers on the topic of functions using a discursive approach, the commognitive framework of Sfard. In the paper a categorization of the construction and substantiation routines used by the teachers is presented, for instance various routines for constructing definitions and examples, and for verifying whether an example satisfies a given definition. The findings show that although the overall form of the lectures is similar, with teachers using ‘chalk talk’, and overt student participation limited to asking and answering questions, there are in fact significant differences in the way the teachers present and do mathematics in their lectures. These differences present themselves both on the level of discursive routines and on a more general level in how the process of doing mathematics is made visible in the teachers’ teaching practices. Moreover, I believe that many of the results of the study could be relevant for investigating the teaching of other mathematical topics.  相似文献

The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM, 2010) are organized around two types of standards: the standards for mathematical content and standards for mathematical practice. The central goal of this paper is to present cognitive and instructional analyses of standards for mathematical practice through a discussion of field-based activities with inservice secondary mathematics teachers and students. A potential value of the study is that it provides researchers with specific field-based hypotheses on advancing standards for mathematical practice.  相似文献

This study investigated the ways in which four middle grades teachers developed mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) geometry as they implemented dynamic geometry software in their classrooms with the assistance of a coach. Teachers developed various components of MKT by observing coaches teach, by dynamic discourse with students, which is discourse with respect to dynamic geometry software images, and by discussions with coaches. The dynamic geometry software environment proved productive as coaches guided teachers’ growth in explanations, examples, and definitions. The environment also helped teachers discover unnoticed abilities among their low achievers. Moreover, teachers developed confidence to teach with more expert uses of dynamic geometry software.  相似文献

This study examines data from college students who worked in pairs to make decisions about a list of potential definitions of prime number. Analysis focused on the evidence each student pair cited when they decided whether or not a statement could be used as a definition for prime number. The purpose of this paper is to describe patterns in the ways students used the evidence they cited. Findings suggest that students attend to important features of mathematical definitions, with some students giving preference to usability and others giving preference to definitions that are unambiguous.  相似文献

In this paper, we present, analyse and critique an episode from a secondary school lesson involving an introduction to the definition of the scalar product. Although the teacher attempted to be explicit about the difference between a definition and a theorem, emphasizing that a definition was just an arbitrary assumption, a student rejected the teacher's definition in favour of his own alternative. With reference to this particular case, we seek to explore some ways in which teachers can introduce mathematical definitions to students so as to support, rather than attempt to circumvent, their mathematical sense making. In this regard, we believe that it is important to develop learning opportunities for students which help them to gain some appreciation of important structural and historical reasons that underpin the definitional choices made.  相似文献

There has been a growing interest in mathematical models to character the evolutionary algorithms. The best-known one of such models is the axiomatic model colled the abstract evolutionary algorithm. In this paper, we first introduce the definitions of the abhstract selection and evolution operators, and that of the abstract evolutionary algorithm, which describes the evolution as an abstract stochastic process composed of these two fundamental abstract operators. In particular, a kind of abstract evolutionary algorithms based on a special selection mechansim is discussed. According to the sorting for the state space, the properties of the single step transition matrix for the algorithm are anaylzed. In the end, we prove that the limit probability distribution of the Markov chains exists. The present work provides a big step toward the establishment of a unified theory of evolutionary computation.  相似文献

This article provides an overview of mathematical habits of the mind and discusses how the concept relates to Polya's problem solving principles as well as exemplification. Specific problems are discussed as a means to assist preservice elementary school teachers' in their development of mathematical habits of the mind. Without a technique to begin solving these rich problems, preservice teachers may have difficulty getting started. The process of preservice teachers outlining their thinking as they progress through Polya's process is discussed. Students' reflections from this technique are discussed to explore the outcomes that may be expected from establishing an environment where students are encouraged to develop mathematical habits of the mind.  相似文献

This paper proposes a taxonomy of the pedagogical opportunities that are offered by mathematics analysis software such as computer algebra systems, graphics calculators, dynamic geometry or statistical packages. Mathematics analysis software is software for purposes such as calculating, drawing graphs and making accurate diagrams. However, its availability in classrooms also provides opportunities for positive changes to teaching and learning. Very many examples are documented in the professional and research literature, and in this paper we organize them into 10 types. These are displayed in the form of a ‘pedagogical map’, which further classifies them according to whether the opportunity arises from new opportunities for the mathematical tasks used, change to interpersonal aspects of the classroom or change to the point of view on mathematics as a subject. The map can be used in teacher professional development to draw attention to possibilities for lessons or as a catalyst for professional discussion. For research on teaching, it can be used to map current practice, or to track professional growth. The intention of the map is to summarise the potential benefits of teaching with technology in a form that may be useful for both teachers and researchers.  相似文献

The paper contains definitions of different types of nondominated approximate solutions to vector optimization problems and gives some of their elementary properties. Then, saddle-point theorems corresponding to these solutions are presented with an application relative to approximate primal-dual pairs of solutions.This research was carried out while the author was working at the Bureau for Systems Analysis, State Office for Technical Development, Budapest, Hungary. Symmetry is an important mathematical concept which plays an extremely important role as a problem-solving technique. Nevertheless, symmetry is rarely used in secondary school in solving mathematical problems. Several investigations demonstrate that secondary school mathematics teachers are not aware enough of the importance of this elegant problem-solving tool. In this paper we present examples of problems from several branches of mathematics that can be solved using different types of symmetry. Teachers' attitudes and beliefs regarding the use of symmetry in the solutions of these problems are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes part of a research and development project carried out in public elementary schools. Its objective was to update the mathematical and didactic knowledge of teachers in two consecutive levels in urban and rural public schools of Region de Los Lagos and Region de Los Rios of southern Chile. To that effect, and by means of an advanced training project based on a professional competences model, didactic interventions based on types of problems and types of mathematical competences with analysis of contents and learning assessment were designed. The teachers’ competence regarding the didactic strategy used and its results, as well as the students’ learning achievements are specified. The project made possible to validate a strategy of lifelong improvement in mathematics, based on the professional competences of teachers and their didactic transposition in the classroom, as an alternative to consolidate learning in areas considered vulnerable in two regions of the country.  相似文献

In this article, we demonstrate that prospective teachers’ content knowledge related to defining mathematical concepts is dependent on content area. We use the example of generation (a research tool we developed in a previous study) to investigate prospective teachers’ knowledge. We asked prospective secondary mathematics teachers to provide multiple examples of definitions of concepts from different areas of mathematics. We examined teacher-generated examples of concept definition and analysed individual and collective example spaces, focusing on their correctness and richness. We demonstrate differences in prospective teachers’ knowledge associated with defining mathematical concepts in geometry, algebra and calculus.  相似文献

The article presents output expressions of linkage mechanism in general mathematical form. The harmonic components of the mathematical expressions are analyzed by using the Fourier series theory. The relationship between the harmonic component and the harmonic characteristic parameters of coupler rotation-angle operator is discovered. Based on this relationship, a unified approach to establish the numerical atlas database is given. The unified derivation process of formula, which can compute the actual dimensions and installation parameters of linkage mechanism, is presented. The concepts of the coupler rotation-angle operator, the harmonic output characteristic parameters of dimensional type, the mechanism’s basic dimensional types and the harmonic dimension characteristic parameters of dimensional type are defined. Based on these definitions and the concrete steps of harmonic characteristic parameter method, the unified model is set up for the dimensional synthesis of linkage mechanism from planar, spherical to spatial motion.  相似文献

This paper proposes the novel approach to the mathematical synthesis of continuous self-organising systems capable to memorise and restore own multiple shapes defined by means of functions of single spatial variable or parametric models in two-dimensional space. The model is based on the certain universal form of the integral operator with the kernel representing the system memory. The technique for memorising shapes uses the composition of singular kernels of integral operators. The whole system is described by the potential function, whose minimisation leads to the non-linear dynamics of shape reconstruction by integro-differential non-linear equations with partial derivatives. The corresponding models are proposed and analysed for both parametric and non-parametric shape definitions. Main features of the proposed model are considered, and the results of numerical simulation are shown in case of three shapes memorising and retrieval. The proposed model can be used in theory of smart materials, artificial intelligence and some other branches of non-linear sciences where the effect of multiple shapes memorising and retrieval appears as the core feature.  相似文献
