The -component of the index of a number field , , depends only on the completions of at the primes over . More precisely, equals the index of the -algebra . If is normal, then for some normal over and some , and we write for its index. In this paper we describe an effective procedure to compute for all and all normal and tamely ramified extensions of , hence to determine for all Galois number fields that are tamely ramified at . Using our procedure, we are able to exhibit a counterexample to a conjecture of Nart (1985) on the behaviour of .

Let be an open subset of a locally compact metric ANR and let be a continuous map. In this paper we study the fixed point index of the map that induces in the -symmetric product of , . This index can detect the existence of periodic orbits of period of , and it can be used to obtain the Euler characteristic of the -symmetric product of a manifold , . We compute for all orientable compact surfaces without boundary.

We show that Brownian motion on any unbounded submanifold in an ambient manifold with a pole is transient if the following conditions are satisfied: The -radial mean curvatures of are sufficiently small outside a compact set and the -radial sectional curvatures of are sufficiently negative. The `sufficiency' conditions are obtained via comparison with explicit transience criteria for radially drifted Brownian motion in warped product model spaces.

We show that if a closed -manifold admits a structurally stable diffeomorphism with an orientable expanding attractor of codimension one, then is homotopy equivalent to the -torus and is homeomorphic to for . Moreover, there are no nontrivial basic sets of different from . This allows us to classify, up to conjugacy, structurally stable diffeomorphisms having codimension one orientable expanding attractors and contracting repellers on , .

Let be a finite group acting linearly on a finite-dimensional vector space over a field of characteristic . Assume that  divides the order of so that is a modular representation and let be a Sylow -subgroup for . Define the cohomological connectivity of the symmetric algebra to be the smallest positive integer such that . We show that is a lower bound for the depth of . We characterize those representations for which the lower bound is sharp and give several examples of representations satisfying the criterion. In particular, we show that if is -nilpotent and is cyclic, then, for any modular representation, the depth of is .

This paper addresses problems on arithmetic Macaulayfications of projective schemes. We give a surprising complete answer to a question poised by Cutkosky and Herzog. Let be the blow-up of a projective scheme along the ideal sheaf of . It is known that there are embeddings for , where denotes the maximal generating degree of , and that there exists a Cohen-Macaulay ring of the form (which gives an arithmetic Macaulayfication of ) if and only if , for , and is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. We show that under these conditions, there are well-determined invariants and such that is Cohen-Macaulay for all d(I)e + \varepsilon$"> and e_0$">, and that these bounds are the best possible. We also investigate the existence of a Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebra of the form . If has negative -invariant, we prove that such a Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebra exists if and only if , for 0$">, and is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, these conditions imply the Cohen-Macaulayness of for all d(I)e + \varepsilon$"> and e_0$">.

We consider a locally compact group and a limiting measure of a commutative infinitesimal triangular system (c.i.t.s.) of probability measures on . We show, under some restrictions on , or , that belongs to a continuous one-parameter convolution semigroup. In particular, this result is valid for symmetric c.i.t.s. on any locally compact group . It is also valid for a limiting measure which has `full' support on a Zariski connected -algebraic group , where is a local field, and any one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) is a compact extension of a closed solvable normal subgroup, in particular, is amenable, (2) has finite one-moment or (3) has density and in case the characteristic of is positive, the radical of is -defined. We also discuss the spectral radius of the convolution operator of a probability measure on a locally compact group , we show that it is always positive for any probability measure on , and it is also multiplicative in case of symmetric commuting measures.

We consider algebraic manifolds of dimension 3 over with for all and 0$">. Let be a smooth completion of with , an effective divisor on with normal crossings. If the -dimension of is not zero, then is a fibre space over a smooth affine curve (i.e., we have a surjective morphism from to such that the general fibre is smooth and irreducible) such that every fibre satisfies the same vanishing condition. If an irreducible smooth fibre is not affine, then the Kodaira dimension of is and the -dimension of is 1. We also discuss sufficient conditions from the behavior of fibres or higher direct images to guarantee the global vanishing of Hodge cohomology and the affineness of .

We consider compact -manifolds having a submersion to in which each generic point inverse is a planar surface. The standard height function on a submanifold of is a motivating example. Let denote the symplectic four-manifold, homotopy equivalent to the rational elliptic surface, corresponding to a fibred knot in constructed by R. Fintushel and R. J. Stern in 1998. We construct a family of nullhomologous Lagrangian tori in and prove that infinitely many of these tori have complements with mutually non-isomorphic fundamental groups if the Alexander polynomial of has some irreducible factor which does not divide for any positive integer . We also show how these tori can be non-isotopically embedded as nullhomologous Lagrangian submanifolds in other symplectic -manifolds.

Consider an -dimensional projective toric variety defined by a convex lattice polytope . David Cox introduced the toric residue map given by a collection of divisors on . In the case when the are -invariant divisors whose sum is , the toric residue map is the multiplication by an integer number. We show that this number is the degree of a certain map from the boundary of the polytope to the boundary of a simplex. This degree can be computed combinatorially. We also study radical monomial ideals of the homogeneous coordinate ring of . We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a homogeneous polynomial of semiample degree to belong to in terms of geometry of toric varieties and combinatorics of fans. Both results have applications to the problem of constructing an element of residue one for semiample degrees.

A diffeomorphism of a compact manifold is called ``almost Anosov' if it is uniformly hyperbolic away from a finite set of points. We show that under some nondegeneracy condition, every almost Anosov diffeomorphism admits an invariant measure that has absolutely continuous conditional measures on unstable manifolds. The measure is either finite or infinite, and is called SBR measure or infinite SBR measure respectively. Therefore, tends to either an SBR measure or for almost every with respect to Lebesgue measure. ( is the Dirac measure at .) For each case, we give sufficient conditions by using coefficients of the third order terms in the Taylor expansion of at .

The main purpose of this paper is to prove several connectedness theorems for complex immersions of closed manifolds in Kähler manifolds with positive holomorphic -Ricci curvature. In particular this generalizes the classical Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem for projective varieties. As an immediate geometric application we prove that a complex immersion of an -dimensional closed manifold in a simply connected closed Kähler -manifold with positive holomorphic -Ricci curvature is an embedding, provided that . This assertion for follows from the Fulton-Hansen theorem (1979).

In this paper we examine when the order of a pole of Igusa's local zeta function associated to a polynomial is smaller than ``expected'. We carry out this study in the case that is sufficiently non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron , and the main result of this paper is a proof of one of the conjectures of Denef and Sargos. Our technique consists in reducing our question about the polynomial to the same question about polynomials , where are faces of depending on the examined pole and is obtained from by throwing away all monomials of whose exponents do not belong to . Secondly, we obtain a formula for Igusa's local zeta function associated to a polynomial , with unstable, which shows that, in this case, the upperbound for the order of the examined pole is obviously smaller than ``expected'.

The valence of a function at a point is the number of distinct, finite solutions to . Let be a complex-valued harmonic function in an open set . Let denote the critical set of and the global cluster set of . We show that partitions the complex plane into regions of constant valence. We give some conditions such that has empty interior. We also show that a component is an -fold covering of some component . If is simply connected, then is univalent on . We explore conditions for combining adjacent components to form a larger region of univalence. Those results which hold for functions on open sets in are first stated in that form and then applied to the case of planar harmonic functions. If is a light, harmonic function in the complex plane, we apply a structure theorem of Lyzzaik to gain information about the difference in valence between components of sharing a common boundary arc in .

We address three different questions concerning exceptional and root divisors (of arithmetic genus zero and of self-intersection and , respectively) on a smooth complex projective surface which admits a birational morphism to . The first one is to find criteria for the properness of these divisors, that is, to characterize when the class of is in the -orbit of the class of the total transform of some point blown up by if is exceptional, or in the -orbit of a simple root if is root, where is the Weyl group acting on ; we give an arithmetical criterion, which adapts an analogous criterion suggested by Hudson for homaloidal divisors, and a geometrical one. Secondly, we prove that the irreducibility of the exceptional or root divisor is a necessary and sufficient condition in order that could be transformed into a line by some plane Cremona map, and in most cases for its contractibility. Finally, we provide irreducibility criteria for proper homaloidal, exceptional and effective root divisors.

We study the mod  cohomology of the classifying space of the projective unitary group . We first prove that conjectures due to J.F. Adams and Kono and Yagita (1993) about the structure of the mod  cohomology of the classifying space of connected compact Lie groups hold in the case of . Finally, we prove that the classifying space of the projective unitary group is determined by its mod  cohomology as an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra for 3$">, completing previous work by Dwyer, Miller and Wilkerson (1992) and Broto and Viruel (1998) for the cases .

In this paper, we give estimates and the regularizing estimate of Radon transforms associated to real analytic functions, and we also give estimates of the decay rate of the operator norm of corresponding oscillatory integral operators. For estimates and estimates of the decay rate of the operator norm we obtain sharp results except for extreme points; however, for regularity we allow some restrictions on the phase function.
