The waveguide invariant, β, that manifests itself as interference fringes or "striations" in a plot of frequency vs source-receiver separation, is usually thought of as a modal phenomenon. This paper shows that striations can be explained simply through the variation of the eigenray arrival times with range, in short, the variation of the multipath impulse response. It is possible to calculate β for a number of sound speed profiles analytically and to find what β depends on, why it switches from one value to another, how it depends on source-receiver depth, how it depends on variable bathymetry, and how smooth the sound speed profile needs to be for clear fringes. The analytical findings are confirmed by calculating striation patterns numerically starting from eigenray travel times in various stratified environments. Most importantly the approach throws some light on what can be deduced from β alone and the likelihood and utility of striations in reverberation. 相似文献

In waveguide structures, waves may be partially reflected by local non-uniformities such as cracks and other defects. The reflection and transmission characteristics associated with the presence of a discontinuity may be used, in principle, to give some indication of both the location and size of the defect. A combined spectral element and finite element (SE/FE) method has been used previously to investigate the effects of local non-uniformities at relatively low frequencies. However, for analysis at higher frequencies, where complex deformation of the waveguide occurs, it is necessary to extend this approach. Such high frequency analysis is necessary if small defects are to be located within the waveguide cross-section. In order to investigate wave propagation at higher frequencies, a combined spectral super element and finite element (SSE/FE) method is presented. This method allows the transmission, reflection and wave conversion at discontinuities to be determined for complex waveguides. As an example of the use of this method, wave reflection and transmission in rails are estimated at frequencies between 20 and 40 kHz for various notional sawcut-like defects of progressively increasing size. This shows the feasibility of the approach for realistic waveguides. However, from these simulations it is shown that defects have to be quite large before they can be detected using a single transducer position on the rail cross-section using train-induced vibration. 相似文献

通过利用标准简正波程序KRAKEN计算本地简正波解及耦合矩阵, 进一步发展了求解水平变化波导中声场的全局矩阵耦合简正波方法(Luo et al., "A numerically stable coupled-mode formulation for acoustic propagation in range-dependent waveguides," Sci. China-Phys. Mech. Astron. 55, 572 (2012)), 使得该方法可以处理具有可穿透海底及随深度变化声速剖面等实际问题, 并提供声场的完全双向解. 本文还给出了双层波导中耦合矩阵的解析表达式, 并利用其验证了本方法中耦合矩阵数值算法的精度. 最后, 利用改善后的全局矩阵耦合简正波模型(DGMCM)计算了美国声学学会(ASA)提出的可穿透楔形波导标准问题, 将所得数值解与参考解比较, 结果表明DGMCM方法可以精确处理水平变化波导中声传播实际问题.

The propagation of a noise signal is considered for an arctic-type waveguide with a varying sound speed profile. The profiles used in the calculations differ from each other due to different depth dependences of salinity. The shape of the envelope of the time correlation function is studied for the coherent and reference signals. For the latter, either the replica of the transmitted noise signal or one of the modes propagating in the waveguide is used. A characteristic feature of the proposed technique is the use of the time cross-correlation between the signals that traveled through the same path in the presence of different sound speed profiles. In this case, from the shape of the envelope of the signal correlation function, one can estimate the changes that occur in the sound speed profile on the path of signal propagation. 相似文献

用Ag-Na离子交换技术制备了玻璃平面波导.通过棱镜耦合技术测量了波导的模折射率,用反WKB方法拟合得到了平面波导的折射率分布为高斯分布.发现Ag-Na离子交换的扩散系数与交换时间有关,并且随着交换时间的增加而减小.使用随离子浓度变化的扩散系数求解扩散方程得到了玻璃内部Ag离子浓度分布,并通过SEM谱证实了求解的正确性;使用一次多项式模拟的方法求解折射率变化与Ag离子浓度变化之间的关系,得到了平面波导的折射率分布.与反WKB法只能获得多模离子交换平面波导的折射率分布相比,这种方法可以得到任意扩散时间下折射率变化与Ag离子浓度,可以获得单模平面波导的折射率分布. 相似文献

Bistatic, long-range measurements of acoustic scattered returns from vertically extended, air-filled tubular targets were made during three distinct field experiments in fluctuating continental shelf waveguides. It is shown that Sonar Equation estimates of mean target-scattered intensity lead to large errors, differing by an order of magnitude from both the measurements and waveguide scattering theory. The use of the Ingenito scattering model is also shown to lead to significant errors in estimating mean target-scattered intensity in the field experiments because they were conducted in range-dependent ocean environments with large variations in sound speed structure over the depth of the targets, scenarios that violate basic assumptions of the Ingenito model. Green's theorem based full-field modeling that describes scattering from vertically extended tubular targets in range-dependent ocean waveguides by taking into account nonuniform sound speed structure over the target's depth extent is shown to accurately describe the statistics of the targets' scattered field in all three field experiments. Returns from the man-made targets are also shown to have a very different spectral dependence from the natural target-like clutter of the dominant fish schools observed, suggesting that judicious multi-frequency sensing may often provide a useful means of distinguishing fish from man-made targets. 相似文献

First-order perturbation theory is employed to examine sound propagation in flowing media confined by a cylindrical waveguide. The use of perturbation theory allows examination of mode phase-speed changes due to any radially dependent flow w(r) as long as the flow magnitude is sufficiently small. The condition to be fulfilled is satisfied in the flow range: 0-0.3 m/s for the specific values of cylinder radius, ultrasound frequency, and sound speed analyzed in the present work [in the general case, however, the condition in Eq. (1) of the present work must be fulfilled]. This freedom of choice, i.e., the possibility to handle any radial flow profile, is used to analyze two flow profile cases: (1) where w(r) is a linear combination of a laminar flow profile and a flat profile corresponding to turbulent flow, and (2) where w(r) is a linear combination of a laminar flow profile and a more realistic logarithmic-dependent turbulent flow profile. In both cases, it is shown that large errors may result in ultrasound flow measurements if several modes are excited by the transmitting transducer, and that a logarithmic flow profile in the turbulent regime leads to somewhat larger measurement errors at high flow values as compared to assuming a simple flat profile in the turbulent regime. 相似文献

A theory of guided propagation of sound in layered, moving fluids is extended to include acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) in waveguides with piecewise continuous parameters. The orthogonality of AGW normal modes is established in moving and motionless media. A perturbation theory is developed to quantify the relative significance of the gravity and fluid compressibility as well as sensitivity of the normal modes to variations in sound speed, flow velocity, and density profiles and in boundary conditions. Phase and group speeds of the normal modes are found to have certain universal properties which are valid for waveguides with arbitrary stratification. The Lamb wave is shown to be the only AGW normal mode that can propagate without dispersion in a layered medium. 相似文献

The theory of step-index waveguides is well-established. Most practical slab waveguide structures have a graded-index profile. The basic properties of graded-index planar waveguide structures are similar to those of step-index waveguides with subtle differences. The most common types of graded-index slab waveguides are linearly and exponentially graded-index profiles. We here treat linearly graded-index slab waveguide. In this work, a three-layer waveguide structure with linearly graded-index film is considered. We assume three structures: the first structure comprises a left-handed material (LHM) cladding, the second structure contains a LHM substrate layer and the third has a LHM cladding and substrate. Closed-form expressions for electric and magnetic fields and the characteristic equation are derived. The three normalized parameters: the asymmetry coefficient (a), the normalized film thickness (V) and the normalized guide index (b) are used to study the dispersion properties of the proposed slab waveguide structure. 相似文献

The refractive index profile of buried graded-index planar optical waveguides fabricated by ion migration can be described by a buried secant hyperbolic function. Using such a profile, we have obtained the exact propagation characteristics for such buried optical waveguides. We have also shown that profiles which deviate slightly from the above profile can be treated as perturbations and a first-order perturbation correction gives very accurate results. 相似文献

In this paper, we first report that a new proton source, glutaric acid, has been used to fabricate optical waveguides in Z-cut lithium niobate crystals. The relationship was experimentally established between proton-exchanged (PE) waveguide parameters and fabrication conditions. It is shown that this new organic acid can be used to obtain deep PE waveguides in fast diffusion speed (0.275 μm2/h at 221°C) and with low loss (0.2 dB/cm). It provides an alternative approach for fabricating PE waveguides in lithium niobate substrate. 相似文献

The effect of the second-order dispersion on the spatiotemporal dynamics of ultrashort pulses in nonlinear waveguides with infinite parabolic and stepped profiles of the refractive index is studied. It is shown that the leakage of radiation from the core to the cladding of step-index waveguides prevents the formation of a steady spatiotemporal distribution of the field. The possibility of compressing light pulses in a dielectric waveguide with a positive group-velocity dispersion is discussed. 相似文献

A three-dimensional Cartesian parabolic-equation model with a higher-order approximation to the square-root Helmholtz operator is presented for simulating underwater sound propagation in ocean waveguides. The higher-order approximation includes cross terms with the free-space square-root Helmholtz operator and the medium phase speed anomaly. It can be implemented with a split-step Fourier algorithm to solve for sound pressure in the model.
