The photodissociation dynamics of iodocyclohexane has been studied using velocity map imaging following excitation at many wavelengths within its A-band (230 ≤ λ ≤ 305 nm). This molecule exists in two conformations (axial and equatorial), and one aim of the present experiment was to explore the extent to which conformer-specific fragmentation dynamics could be distinguished. Ground (I) and spin-orbit excited (I?) state iodine atom products were monitored by 2 + 1 resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization, and total kinetic energy release (TKER) spectra and angular distributions derived from analysis of images recorded at all wavelengths studied. TKER spectra obtained at the longer excitation wavelengths show two distinct components, which can be attributed to the two conformers and the different ways in which these partition the excess energy upon C-I bond fission. Companion calculations based on a simple impulsive model suggest that dissociation of the equatorial (axial) conformer preferentially yields vibrationally (rotationally) excited cyclohexyl co-fragments. Both I and I? products are detected at the longest parent absorption wavelength (λ ~ 305 nm), and both sets of products show recoil anisotropy parameters, β > 1, implying prompt dissociation following excitation via a transition whose dipole moment is aligned parallel to the C-I bond. The quantum yield for forming I? products, Φ(I?), has been determined by time resolved infrared diode laser absorption methods to be 0.14 ± 0.02 (at λ = 248 nm) and 0.22 ± 0.05 (at λ = 266 nm). Electronic structure calculations indicate that the bulk of the A-band absorption is associated with transition to the 4A(') state, and that the (majority) I atom products arise via non-adiabatic transfer from the 4A(') potential energy surface (PES) via conical intersection(s) with one or more PESs correlating with ground state products.  相似文献

A recent review (Ashfold et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2010, 12, 1218) highlighted the important role of dissociative excited states formed by electron promotion to σ* orbitals in establishing the photochemistry of many molecular hydrides. Here we extend such considerations to molecular halides, with a particular focus on iodobenzene. Two experimental techniques (velocity mapped ion imaging (VMI) and time resolved infrared (IR) diode laser absorption) and electronic structure calculations have been employed in a comprehensive study of the near ultraviolet (UV) photodissociation of gas phase iodobenzene molecules. The VMI studies yield the speeds and angular distributions of the I((2)P(3/2)) and I*((2)P(1/2)) photofragments formed by photolysis in the wavelength range 330 ≥λ≥ 206 nm. Four distinct dissociation channels are observed for the I((2)P(3/2)) atom products, and a further three channels for the I*((2)P(1/2)) fragments. The phenyl (Ph) radical partners formed via one particular I* product channel following excitation at wavelengths 305 ≥λ≥ 250 nm are distributed over a sufficiently select sub-set of vibrational (v) states that the images allow resolution of specific I* + Ph(v) channels, identification of the active product mode (ν(10), an in-plane ring breathing mode), and a refined determination of D(0)(Ph-I) = 23,390 ± 50 cm(-1). The time-resolved IR absorption studies allow determination of the spin-orbit branching ratio in the iodine atom products formed at λ = 248 nm (?(I*) = [I*]/([I] + [I*]) = 0.28 ± 0.04) and at 266 nm (?(I*) = 0.32 ± 0.05). The complementary high-level, spin-orbit resolved ab initio calculations of sections (along the C-I bond coordinate) through the ground and first 19 excited state potential energy surfaces (PESs) reveal numerous excited states in the energy range of current interest. Except at the very shortest wavelength, however, all of the observed I and I* products display limiting or near limiting parallel recoil anisotropy. This encourages discussion of the fragmentation dynamics in terms of excitation to states of A(1) total symmetry and dissociation on the 2A(1) and 4A(1) (σ* ← n/π) PESs to yield, respectively, I and I* products, or via non-adiabatic coupling to other σ* ← n/π PESs that correlate to these respective limits. Similarities (and differences) with the available UV photochemical data for the other aryl halides, and with the simpler (and more thoroughly studied) iodides HI and CH(3)I, are summarised.  相似文献

ICl photolysis in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum (235-265 nm) is studied using the Slice Imaging technique. The Cl?((2)P(1/2))/Cl((2)P(3/2)) and the I?((2)P(1/2))/I((2)P(3/2)) branching ratio between the I((2)P(3/2)) + Cl((2)P(3/2))∕Cl?((2)P(1/2)) and I?((2)P(1/2)) + Cl((2)P(3∕/2))∕Cl?((2)P(1/2)) channels is extracted from the respective iodine and chlorine photofragment images. We find that ground state chlorine atoms (Cl((2)P(3/2))) are formed nearly exclusively with excited state iodine atoms (I?((2)P(1/2))), while excited spin-orbit chlorine atoms (Cl?((2)P(1/2))) are concurrently produced only with ground state iodine atoms (I((2)P(3/2))). We conclude that photolysis of ICl in this UV region is a relatively "clean" source of spin-orbit excited chlorine atoms that can be used in crossed molecular beam experiments.  相似文献

The reaction times of several well-defined channels of the C-I bond rupture of methyl iodide from the A band, which involves nonadiabatic dynamics yielding ground state I(2P3/2) and spin-orbit excited I*(2P1/2) and ground and vibrationally excited CH3 fragments, have been measured by a combination of a femtosecond laser pump-probe scheme and velocity map imaging techniques using resonant detection of ground state CH3 fragments. The reaction times found for the different channels studied are directly related with the nonadiabatic nature of this multidimensional photodissociation reaction.  相似文献

Multireference spin-orbit configuration interaction calculations of transition moments from the X A1 ground state to the 3Q0+, 3Q1, and 1Q excited states responsible for the A absorption band of CH3I are reported and employed for an analysis of the photofragmentation in this system. Contrary to what is usually assumed, the 3Q0+(A1), 3Q1(E), and 1Q(E)<--X A1 transition moments are found to be strongly dependent on the C-I fragmentation coordinate. The sign of this dependence is opposite for the parallel and perpendicular transitions, which opens an opportunity for vibrational state control of the photodissociation product yields. The computed absorption intensity distribution and the I* quantum yield as a function of excitation energy are analyzed in comparison with existing experimental data, and good agreement between theory and experiment is found. It is predicted that significantly higher I* quantum yield values (>0.9) may be achieved when vibrationally hot CH3I molecules are excited in the appropriate spectral range. It is shown that vibrational state control of the I*/I branching ratio in the alkyl (hydrogen) iodide photodissociation has an electronic rather than a dynamic nature: Due to a different electron density distribution at various molecular geometries, one achieves a more efficient excitation of a particular fragmentation channel rather than influences the dynamics of the decay process.  相似文献

High resolution total kinetic energy release (TKER) spectra of the H atom fragments resulting from photodissociation of jet-cooled adenine molecules at 17 wavelengths in the range 280>lambda(phot)>214 nm are reported. TKER spectra obtained at lambda(phot)>233 nm display broad, isotropic profiles that peak at low TKER ( approximately 1800 cm(-1)) and are largely insensitive to the choice of excitation wavelength. The bulk of these products is attributed to unintended multiphoton dissociation processes. TKER spectra recorded at lambda(phot)相似文献

The photodissociation of CH(3)I in the blue edge (217-230 nm) of the A-band has been studied using a combination of slice imaging and resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) detection of the CH(3) fragment in the vibrational ground state (ν = 0). The profiles of the CH(3) (ν = 0) kinetic energy distributions and the photofragment anisotropies are interpreted in terms of the contribution of the excited surfaces involved in the photodissociation process, as well as the probability of non-adiabatic curve crossing between the (3)Q(0) and (1)Q(1) states. In the studied region, unlike in the central part of the A-band where absorption to the (3)Q(0) state dominates, the I((2)P(J)), with J = 1/2, 3/2, in correlation with CH(3) (ν = 0) kinetic energy distributions show clearly two contributions of different anisotropy, signature of the competing adiabatic and non-adiabatic dynamics, whose ratio strongly depends on the photolysis wavelength. The experimental results are compared with multisurface wave packet calculations carried out using the available ab initio potential energy surfaces, transition moments, and non-adiabatic couplings, employing a reduced dimensionality model. A good qualitative agreement is found between experiment and theory and both show evidence of reverse (3)Q(0)←(1)Q(1) non-adiabatic dynamics at the bluest excitation wavelengths both in the fragment kinetic energy and angular distributions.  相似文献

The time-resolved photodissociation dynamics of CH(3)I in the A-band has been studied theoretically using a wave packet model including four degrees of freedom, namely the C-I dissociation coordinate, the I-CH(3) bending mode, the CH(3) umbrella mode, and the C-H symmetric stretch mode. Clocking times and final product state distributions of the different dissociation (nonadiabatic) channels yielding spin-orbit ground and excited states of the I fragment and vibrationless and vibrationally excited (symmetric stretch ν(1) and umbrella ν(2) modes) CH(3) fragments have been obtained and compared with the results of femtosecond velocity map imaging experiments. The wave packet calculations are able to reproduce with very good agreement the experimental reaction times for the CH(3)(ν(1), ν(2))+I*((2)P(1/2)) dissociation channels with ν(1) = 0 and ν(2) = 0,1,2, and also for the channel CH(3)(ν(1) = 0, ν(2) = 0)+I((2)P(3/2)). However, the model fails to predict the experimental clocking times for the CH(3)(ν(1), ν(2))+I((2)P(3/2)) channels with (ν(1), ν(2)) = (0, 1), (0, 2), and (1, 0), that is, when the CH(3) fragment produced along with spin-orbit ground state I atoms is vibrationally excited. These results are similar to those previously obtained with a three-dimensional wave packet model, whose validity is discussed in the light of the results of the four-dimensional treatment. Possible explanations for the disagreements found between theory and experiment are also discussed.  相似文献

The low-lying electronic states of yttrium dicarbide have been calculated using highly correlated wave functions and systematic sequences of correlation consistent basis sets. For the (2)A(1) ground electronic state, the near-equilibrium potential energy surface (PES) has been calculated using the coupled cluster method in conjunction with basis sets ranging in size from double to quintuple zeta. The relativistic effects have been taken into account by using pseudopotentials for the Y atom. After extrapolation to the complete basis set limit, additional corrections due to core-valence correlation and spin-orbit effects have also been included. The same approach has been followed for the (2)B(1), (2)B(2), and (2)A(2) states but only the C(2V) PESs have been considered in these cases. For the two (2)A(1) electronic excited states and, for comparison purposes, for the ground state, the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) approach has been used in conjunction with double-zeta and triple-zeta basis sets for the construction of the PES. The molecular and spectroscopic properties predicted for the ground and excited states investigated in this work compare well with the available experimental data, particularly for the ground electronic state. The 0 K dissociation enthalpy of YC(2), DeltaH(Y-C2)(0 K), and its atomization enthalpy, SigmaD(0), are predicted to be 148.4 and 291.5 kcal/mol, respectively.  相似文献

The concept of a Born–Oppenheimer (BO) potential energy surface (PES) has been extended to non-adiabatic wavefunctions by Hunter and by Wilson. A Hunter non-adiabatic PES corresponding to an excited vibrational state has a set of spikes superimposed on a BO-like PES. It was believed that Wilson PESs were spike-free. We show that it is not the case and that the Wilson PES value at a given nuclear configuration is not the expectation value of a quantum observable but a quotient of such expectation values. Consequently, BO PESs have the quantum interpretation of quotients of approximate expectation values of observables.  相似文献

In recent years, the photodissociation dynamics of aryl halides has been a subject of intensive studies, which is closely related to the atmospheric chemistry. Here we present a review on the photochemistry of aryl halides, with emphasis on the recent progress in photodissociation dynamics at 266 nm by using photofragment translational spectroscopy. The ab initio calculations have also been employed to investigate those photodissociation processes. It has been found that the photodissociation of aryl halides at 266 nm is attributed to the nonadiabatic process via intersystem crossings from bound singlet excited state to triplet excited state and/or via internal conversion from bound singlet excited state to ground state. Also, the substitution effects in the photodissociation dynamics of aryl halides are discussed.  相似文献

Photoionization of the iodine atom following methyl iodide A-band photodissociation was studied over the wavelength range of 245.5-261.6 nm by photoelectron imaging technique. Final state-specific speed and angular distributions of the photoelectron were recorded. Two types of the photoelectron resulted from ionizing the I atom from the photodissociation of CH3I were identified: (a) (2+1) REMPI of the ground state I atom, and (b) two-photon excitation of spin-orbit excited I(2P1/2) to autoionizing resonances converging to the 3P1 state of I+. In addition, some weaker signals were attributed to one-photon ionization of I atoms produced in some higher excited states from multiphoton ionization of CH3I followed by dissociation. Analysis of relative branching ratios to different levels of I+ (in case a) revealed that the final ion level distributions are generally dominated by the preservation of the ion-core configuration of the intermediate resonant state. A qualitative interpretation of the electron angular distribution from an autoionization process is also given.  相似文献

Various molecular species are known to form during the photoreaction of C2H4I2 in the gas phase and in solution. We have studied all species involved in this reaction by ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations: Geometries, energies, and vibrational frequencies of C2H4I2, bridged C2H4I*, anti C2H4I*, C4H4, I2, I3-, and the isomer C2H4I-I were calculated. The absorption peaks and oscillator strengths of selected species along the potential energy surface (PES) were calculated using time-dependent DFT and were compared with available experimental results. The calculated PES satisfactorily describes the observed reactions of the photoexcited C2H4I2 molecule. In the gas phase, there is only one reaction pathway: the first C-I bond ruptures followed by a secondary C-I breakage in the haloethyl radical C2H4I*. In solution, by contrast, another reaction channel, which is energetically more favored over the secondary dissociation, is switched on due to a solvation effect: the bridged C2H4I* can bind to the free iodine atom to form a C2H4I-I isomer without any energy barrier. The isomer can then break into C2H4 and I2. The rotational barriers in the gas phase and in solution were also calculated and compared. To provide experimental data on the structure of C2H4I2 in solution, the ground state structure of C2H4I2 in methanol was determined from static X-ray diffraction data using 88 keV (lambda = 0.14 A) X-rays. The structural parameters are compared with those from the theoretical results.  相似文献

The ab initio/Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) approach has been applied to investigate the photodissociation mechanism of 1,3,5-triazine at different wavelengths of the absorbed photon. Reaction pathways leading to various decomposition products have been mapped out at the G3(MP2,CC)//B3LYP level, and then the RRKM and microcanonical variational transition state theories have been applied to compute rate constants for individual reaction steps. Relative product yields (branching ratios) for the dissociation products have been calculated using the steady-state approach. The results show that, after being excited by 275, 248, or 193 nm photons, the triazine molecule isomerizes to an opened-ring structure on the first singlet excited-state potential energy surface (PES), which is followed by relaxation into the ground electronic state via internal conversion. On the contrary, excitation by 285 and 295 nm photons cannot initiate the ring-opening reaction on the excited-state PES, and the molecule relaxes into the energized ring isomer in the ground electronic state. The dissociation reaction starting from the ring isomer is calculated to have branching ratios of various reaction channels significantly different from those for the reaction initiating from the opened-ring structure. The existence of two distinct mechanisms of 1,3,5-triazine photodissociation can explain the inconsistency in the translational energy distributions of HCN moieties at different wavelengths observed experimentally.  相似文献

We present a direct current slice imaging study of tetrachloroethylene (C(2)Cl(4)) photodissociation, probing the resulting ground state Cl ((2)P(3/2)) and spin-orbit excited state Cl* ((2)P(1/2)) products. We report photofragment images, total translational energy distributions and the product branching ratio of Cl*/Cl following dissociation at 235 and 202 nm, obtained using a two-color reduced-Doppler dissociation/probe. Near 235 nm, the Cl translational energy distribution shows a peak at the limit of the available energy, indicating a direct dissociation through a σ*(C-Cl) ← π (C=C) transition, which is superimposed on a broader underlying distribution. The ground state Cl image and associated translational energy distribution at 202 nm is broad and peaked at lower energy, suggesting either internal conversion to the ground state or a lower excited state prior to dissociation. The Cl* images are similarly broad at both wavelengths. The branching ratio is presented as a function of recoil energy, but after integration shows a near-statistical average of Cl:Cl* as 70:30 at both wavelengths. All the images are largely isotropic, with anisotropy parameters (β) of 0.05 ± 0.03.  相似文献

LAB-frame velocity distributions of Cl-atoms produced in the photoinitiated reaction of CH(3) radicals with HCl have been measured for both the ground Cl ((2)P(3/2)) and excited Cl* ((2)P(1/2)) spin-orbit states using a DC slice velocity-map ion imaging technique. The similarity of these distributions, as well as the average internal excitation of methane co-products for both Cl and Cl* pathways, suggest that all the reactive flux proceeds through the same transition state on the ground potential energy surface (PES) and that the couplings which promote nonadiabatic transitions to the excited PES correlating to Cl* occur later in the exit channel, beyond the TS region. The nature of these couplings is discussed in light of initial vibrational excitation of CH(3) radicals as well as previously reported nonadiabatic reactivity in other polyatomic molecule reactions. Furthermore, the scattering of the reaction products, derived using the photoloc method, suggests that at the high collision energy of our experiment (E(coll) = 22.3 kcal mol(-1)), large impact parameter collisions are favoured with a reduced kinematic constraint on the internal excitation of the methane co-product.  相似文献

Computational studies on the photochemistry of the open-shell chromium oxalate [Cr(C(2)O(4))(3)](3-) ion, including its non-adiabatic relaxation pathways, have been performed. The presence of the peaked conical intersection of a quasi-Jahn-Teller type, connecting the (4)T state with (4)A(2) ground state, accounts for the observed photoinduced racemization. This involves the rupture of one of the Cr-O bonds and the complex forms an unstable trigonal bipyramid form that connects both ground state stereoisomers with the excited quartet manifold. Intersystem crossing seams have been located between the (4)T and lower lying (2)E state which can quench the quartet reaction and lead to (2)E → (4)A(2) emission.  相似文献

High-resolution photofragment translational spectroscopy is used in this work to measure the translational and internal energy distributions in the CD3 and iodine fragments produced from the photodissociation of CD3I at 266 and 304 nm. Channel selected detection, via resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization, combined with one-dimensional core sampling provides detailed information about vibrational state distributions of the CD3 fragments. The vibrational state distributions of CD3 fragments in the I*(2P12) channel have a propensity of nu2 ' umbrella bending mode with a maximum at nu2 ' = 1 for 266 nm photodissociation. For I*(2P12) channel at 304 nm photodissociation, vibrational state distributions of CD3 fragment have a maximum in the vibrational ground state. For the I(2P32) channel (1Q1 <-- 3Q(0+)), nu2 ' umbrella bending vibrational distribution is measured as the predominant vibrational mode but has a much broader distribution when compared to that of the I* channel. The vibrational state distributions of the CD3 fragment produced from the perpendicular transition, i.e., 3Q1, which was determined at 304 nm photodissociation, has a maximum at nu2 ' = 1. The curve crossing possibility between the 1Q1 and 3Q(0+) adiabatic potentials is determined as 0.19 for 266 and 0.85 for 304 nm. The trend in reaction dynamics in 266 and 304 nm photodissociation of CD3I is compared with theoretical calculations. A bond dissociation energy D0(C-I) = 56.60+/-0.5 kcal/mol was derived by applying laws of energy conservation.  相似文献

Multireference spin-orbit configuration interaction calculations have been carried out for the valence and low-lying Rydberg states of CH(3)I. Potential energy surfaces along the C-I dissociation coordinate (minimal energy paths with respect to the umbrella angle) have been obtained as well as transition moments for excitation of the Rydberg states. It is shown that the B and C absorption bands of CH(3)I are dominated by the perpendicular (3)R(1),(1)R?(E)←X??A(1) transitions, while the (3)R(2)(E),?(3)R(0(+) )(A(1))←X??A(1) transitions are very weak. It is demonstrated that the bound Rydberg states of the B and C bands are predissociated due to the interaction with the repulsive E and A(2) components of the (3)A(1) state, with the (3)A(1)(E) state being the main decay channel. It is predicted that the only possibility to obtain the I((2)P(3/2)) ground state atoms from the CH(3)I photodissociation in the B band is by interaction of the (3)R(1)(E) state with the repulsive (1)Q(E) valence state at excitation energies above 55,000 cm(-1). The calculated ab initio data are used to analyze the influence of the Rydberg state vibrational excitation on the decay process. It is shown that, in contrast to intuition, excitation of the ν(3) C-I stretching mode supresses the predissociation, whereas the ν(6) rocking vibration enhances the predissociation rate.  相似文献
