Neutral strange particle production inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c

The production properties ofK _s ⁰ , \(\bar \Lambda\) andK ⁺ p interactions at 32 GeV/c are investigated using the final statistics of the experiment. We present total and semi-inclusive cross sections and aver-age multiplicities. Estimates are given of the diffractive dissociation contributions to total and differential cross sections. Thex-,p _T ^?, and transverse mass dependence of inclusive and semi-inclusive distributions is discussed as well as properties of “prompt”K _s ⁰ 's. The ratio of “prompt”K ₈₉₀ ⁺ (K ₈₉₀ ⁰ ) to “prompt”K ⁰ cross sections is measured to be 1.03±0.12 (0.98±0.17). From a comparison of \(\bar \Lambda\) production inK ^± p interactions at 32 GeV/c, we estimate a strange sea-quark suppression of 0.26 ±0.02. The double differential cross sections ofK _s ⁰ 's is studied as a function of Feynman-x andp _T ² , and a Triple-Regge fit performed. The data are compared in detail to versions of the Lund-model for low-p _T hadronic collisions.     

Inclusive meson resonance production inK + p interactions at 250 GeV/c

A detailed analysis of the inclusive production of the vector mesonsφ,K ^*+,0(892) \(\bar K*^0 (892),\rho ^{ + ,0} ,\omega \) and the tensor mesonsK ₂ ^*0 )(1430) andf ₂(1270) inK ⁺ p interactions at 250 GeV/c is presented The data are compared with results at lower energies and with various quark-parton models. The production ofρ ⁰,K ^*0(892) and \(\bar K*^0 (892)\) increases at the same rate as a function ofs, is concentrated in the central region and is not reproduced by the models. Production of the tensor mesonsf ₂(1270) andK ₂ ^*0 (1340) is suppressed relative toρ ⁰ andK ^*0(892) by a factor of about 3.     

A study of multiparticle fragmentation inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c

Results are presented on inclusive production of resonant and non-resonant particle systems produced inK ⁺ p interactions at 32 GeV/c. We compareK ^*+(892), \(\bar \Sigma ^{ * - } \) (1385), Σ^*±(1385), and ?⁰ inclusivex-spectra with the ones of non-resonantK _s ⁰ π^±, \(\bar \Lambda \pi ^ - \) , Λπ^± and π⁺π^? pairs at the same effective mass. Resonance-particle pairsK ^*+π^±, Σ^*+π^?, and \(\bar \Sigma ^{ * - } \pi ^ - \) are also studied together with non-resonant tripletsK _s ⁰ π^±, Λπ⁺π^?, \(\bar \Lambda \pi ^ - \pi ^ - \) . The invariantx-spectra of resonant particle pairs decrease less rapidly withx then the corresponding non-resonant pairs. Comparison with quark-recombination predictions indicates that the particles, resonances and multiparticle systems are probably created off a single valence quark or diquark instead of carrying all possible valence-quarks.     

Comparison of strange antibaryon and strange meson production inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c

New experimental results are presented on inclusive production properties of \(\bar \Sigma ^{ * + } \) (1385) and \(\bar \Sigma ^{ * + } \) (1385) inK ⁺ p interactions at 32 GeV/c. The analysis is based on significantly larger statistics than previously available. A comparison is also made of invariantx-distributions ofK ⁰/ \(\bar K^0 \) , \(\bar \Lambda \) and \(\bar \Xi ^ + \) and of \(\bar \Sigma ^{ * \pm } \) (1385) andK ^*+(892). These spectra exhibit regularities expected from the quark-recombination picture when it is assumed that the strange mesons and antibaryons are produced off the strange \(\bar s\) -valence-quark in the incidentK ⁺ meson. Transverse momentum distributions are also presented forK ^*+(892) and \(\bar \Sigma ^{ * \pm } \) (1385) and found to be very similar. The results on strange antibaryon average multiplicities disagree strongly with a recent version of the additive quark model.     

Neutral kaon production inK + p and π+ p interactions at 250 GeV/c

The inclusive production of neutral kaons is studied inK ⁺ p and π⁺ p interactions at 250 GeV/c. Total and semi-inclusive cross sections and average kaon multiplicities are presented and compared with the data at lower energies. The longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and their energy dependence are analyzed. The results are interpreted in the framework of recent parton models.     

Inclusive γ and π0 production inK − p interactions at 32 GeV/c

The inclusive production of γ's and π^p0's inK ^? p-interactions at 32 GeV/c is studied. About 30.000 γ's coming from a Mirabelle bubble chamber experiment with a sensitivity of 6.5 ev/μb have been used for the analysis. Inclusive and topological cross sections of γ's are measured. The γ invariant differential distributions and their scaling properties are investigated. The inclusive cross section of π^p0-production is determined and the π^p0 invariant differential distributions are evaluated and compared to those of π^p±.     

Inclusive single and double diffractive dissociations inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c

We study single and double inclusive diffractive production in a 32 GeV/c K ⁺ p experiment in MIRABELLE at the Serpukhov accelerator. From reactionsK ⁺ p→K ⁺+X ⁺ andK ⁺ p→X ⁺+p we determine the total proton and kaon single diffractive dissociation cross sections \(\sigma (p\xrightarrow{{K^ + }}p_D ) = 0.90 \pm 0.12 mb\) and \(\sigma (K^ + \xrightarrow{p}K_D^ + ) = 0\) . 90±0.17 mb, respectively. In either case the only notable contributions come from dissociations into 1 and 3 charged particles. Kaon dissociation exhibits a pronounced slope-mass correlation. The search for double diffractive production in reactionsK ⁺ p→(K ⁺π^?π⁺)+X ⁺ andK ⁺ p→(pπ ⁺ π ^?)+X ⁺ leads in either case to an estimated total double diffractive cross section σ(K ⁺p→K _D ⁺ p_D) of ?220 μb. The double dissociation differential cross section exhibits a large slope of ?10GeV^?2 in the nearthreshold mass region, rapidly decreasing to ?4 GeV^?2 with increasing excitation mass. At our c.m. energy \((\sqrt s \simeq 8 GeV)\) the ratio σ_{inel dif}/σ_el is 0.85±0.10, the total diffractive cross section σ_dif≡σ_el+σ_{inel dif}=4.41±0.24 mb and the fraction σ_dif(K ⁺ p)/σ_tot(K ⁺ p) is 25±2%. TheK ⁺ andK ^? diffractive excitation mass spectra, differential cross sections and total diffractive cross sections are very similar for both single and double dissociations.     

Direct soft photon production inK + p andπ + p interactions at 250 GeV/c

Inclusive production of direct soft photons is studied inK ⁺ p andK ⁺ π interactions at 250 GeV/c. Total cross sections, Feynman-x and transverse momentum distributions of direct γ's are presented. The measured cross sections are several times larger than expected from QED inner bremsstrahlung, indicating the presence of an anomalous soft photon source. The model of Lichard and Van Hove, based on the “cold quark-gluon plasma” picture, agrees with the data.     

Slow proton andΔ ++ production inK + p interactions at 70 GeV/c

The inclusive inelastic processesK ⁺ p→pX ⁺ andK ⁺ p→Δ ⁺⁺ X ⁰ are studied at an incident momentum of 70 GeV/c. The data comes from the Big European Bubble Chamber BEBC filled with hydrogen, exposed to an rf reparatedK ⁺ beam at the CERN SPS accelerator. The inclusive cross section for protons with laboratory momentump _LAB≦1.2 GeV/c is equal to (6.1±0.1) mb. InclusiveΔ ⁺⁺-production is studied for |t _{p, Δ}|<1.0(GeV/c)². Comparisons are made with otherK ⁺ p data and withpp data at 69 GeV/c. Evidence is found for Pomeron exchange at the beam vertex both for slow proton andΔ ⁺⁺-production as well as for absorptive pion exchange at the (p,Δ ⁺⁺) vertex.     

Inclusive photon and π0 production inK + p interactions at 70 GeV/c

Inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections and distributions of γ's and π⁰'s inK ⁺ p interactions at 70 GeV/c are presented. The results are compared to other experiments and to the Lund model for low-p _T hadron collisions.     

InclusiveK *+(892) andK *0(892) production inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c

Total and semi-inclusive cross sections, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and spin density matrix elements of theK ^*+(892) andK ^*0(892) produced in the inclusive reactionsK ⁺ p→K ^*+(892)+X andK ⁺ p→K ^*0(892)+X at 32 GeV/c are studied in detail. The inclusive spectra of theK ^*(892) and their decay products are compared with pion and neutral kaon production. TheK ^*+(892) andK ^*+(892) are dominantly produced by kaon fragmentation processes. The dependence of average transverse momentum <p _T> vs.x for resonances has been investigated for the first time.     

Bose-Einstein correlations inK + p and π+ p at 250 GeV/c

Two-pion correlations are studied for pions of like charge inK ⁺ p andπ ⁺ p collisions at 250 GeV/c. An enhanced production is observed at small momentum difference and is attributed to Bose-Einstein interference between identical particles. A systematic study is presented on the influence of parametrization and reference sample. Interpreted in terms of the Kopylov-Podgoretskii parametrization a size of the emitting regionr _K ≈1.4 fm is found. The Lorentz invariant parametrization of Goldhaber givesr _G ≈0.8 fm. With fixed parametrization, similarity is found for hadronhadron,e ⁺ e ^? and lepton-hadron collisions. No multiplicity or angular dependence is found at our energy.     

Charged pion production in 32GeV/c K + p interactions

Final data on topological cross sections are presented. Inclusive single particle distributions for the reactionsK ⁺ p→ π^± X at 32 GeV/c are discussed and compared with data at lower energies. Early scaling in the fragmentation regions is confirmed, while cross sections in th central region continue to rise with energy even faster than inpp interactions. Thex-andp _T -dependence of the π⁺/π^? ratio inK ⁺ p interactions is discussed and a comparison of reactionsK ⁺ p→ π^± X andK ^? p→ π^± X at 32 GeV/c is made in the context of constituent models. We also present transverse momentum distributions, show prominent seagull effects and study how they are influenced by resonance production.     

K + fragmentation and prompt kaon production inK + p collisions at 70 GeV/c

InclusiveK *+(1430),K *0(1430), andf(1270) production inK + p interactions at 32 GeV/c

Results are presented on total and semiinclusive cross sections, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the tensor mesonsK ^*+(1430),K ^*0(1430), andf(1270) observed inK ⁺ p interactions at 32 GeV/c. The data are compared withK ^*+(892).K ^*0(896) and ?⁰ vector meson production in the same experiment. The shapes of inclusive invariantx-spectra for the strange vector and tensor mesons are found to be rather similar, after removal of diffractive and quasi-two-body channels, in agreement with quark-recombination ideas.     

Inclusive ∑±(1385) production inK − p interactions at 110 GeV/c

Results are presented on inclusive production of ∑⁺(1385) and ∑^?(1385) inK ^? p interactions at 110 GeV/c. The inclusive and topological cross sections have been estimated and compared with published results at lower energies. The inclusive cross section of ∑⁺(1385) seems to decrease with c.m. energy, while that of the ∑^?(1385) is nearly constant. The mean charged multiplicity associate to Σ(1385) increases with c.m. energy. The ∑⁺(1385) is produced both in the target fragmentation region and in the central region where ∑^?(1385) is predominantly produced in the central region. Approximately 16% of the Λ's stem from the decay of ∑^±(1385) and the kinematic distributions of these Λ's are not very different from the inclusive Λ's.     

Evidence for two back-to-back high-p T jets inK + p interactions at 70 GeV/c

Nucleon structure functions obtained from neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on iron nuclei at high energies (E _v =30 to 250 GeV) are presented. These results are compared with the results of other lepton-nucleon scattering experiments. The structure functions are used to test the validity of the Gross-Llewellyn-smith sum rule, which measures the number of valence quarks in the nucleons, and to obtain leading and second order QCD fits.     

Baryonic resonance production in\bar p p interactions at 32 GeV/c

The inclusive production of (1232) in \(\bar p\) p interactions at 32 GeV/c is studied using data collected in a bubble chamber experiment with a statistics of ～0.7 events/μb. Total and topological cross sections are evaluated and compared to existing data at other energies. The distributions of reduced longitudinal momentum and rapidity show evidence for some central production. Total cross sections for (∑ ⁺(1385)+cc) and (∑ ^?(1385)+cc) are also presented.     

Forward and backward multiplicities inK − p interactions at 110 GeV/c

Multiplicity distributions and correlations between charged particles in the forward and back-ward c.m. hemispheres are studied inK ^?p interactions at 110 GeV/c and compared with other data on mesonnucleon scattering. The interpretation in terms of a simple quark-parton picture assuming that the forward multiplicity is dominated by quark fragmentation and the backward multiplicity by diquark fragmentation is supported by the experimental fact that the forward and the backward mean multiplicities are approximately equal to half of thee ⁺ e ^? andpp multiplicities, respectively. The 110 GeV/cK ^?p data show significant correlations between the numbers of slow forward and slow backward particles, whereas the multiplicities of fast forward and fast backward particles are independent.
