We examine the role of a computer to prove the existence of periodic orbits of nonquadratic dynamical systems on the lines of the work of Vul and Sinai(1) for quadratic systems. We show that, in principle, the work can be successful. Results, simpler in the case of quadratic systems, are applied to the well studied Lorenz model.  相似文献

We present a continuation method that enables one to track or continue branches of periodic orbits directly in an experiment when a parameter is changed. A control-based setup in combination with Newton iterations ensures that the periodic orbit can be continued even when it is unstable. This is demonstrated with the continuation of initially stable rotations of a vertically forced pendulum experiment through a fold bifurcation to find the unstable part of the branch.  相似文献

The phenomenon of periodic orbit scarring of eigenstates of classically chaotic systems is attracting increasing attention. Scarring is one of the most important "corrections" to the ideal random eigenstates suggested by random matrix theory. This paper discusses measures of scars and in so doing also tries to clarify the concepts and effects of eigenfunction scarring. We propose a universal scar measure which takes into account an entire periodic orbit and the linearized dynamics in its vicinity. This measure is tuned to pick out those structures which are induced in quantum eigenstates by unstable periodic orbits and their manifolds. It gives enhanced scarring strength as measured by eigenstate overlaps and inverse participation ratios, especially for longer orbits. We also discuss off-resonance scars which appear naturally on either side of an unstable periodic orbit.  相似文献

Symplectic twist maps are obtained from a Lagrangian variational principle. It is well known that nondegenerate minima of the action correspond to hyperbolic orbits of the map when the twist is negative definite and the map is two-dimensional. We show that for more than two dimensions, periodic orbits with minimal action in symplectic twist maps with negative definite twist are not necessarily hyperbolic. In the proof we show that in the neighborhood of a minimal periodic orbit of period n, the nth iterate of the map is again a twist map. This is true even though in general the composition of twist maps is not a twist map.  相似文献

A point particle sliding freely on a two-dimensional surface of constant negative curvature (Hadamard-Gutzwiller model) exemplifies the simplest chaotic Hamiltonian system. Exploiting the close connection between hyperbolic geometry and the group SU(1,1)/⦅±1⦆, we construct an algorithm (symboliv dynamics), which generates the periodic orbits of the system. For the simplest compact Riemann surface having as its fundamental group the “octagon group”, we present an enumeration of more than 206 million periodic orbits. For the length of the nth primitive periodic orbit we find a simple expression in terms of algebraic numbers of the form m + √2n (m, nϵN are governed by a particular Beatty sequence), which reveals a strange arithmetical structure of chaos. Knowledge of the length spectrum is crucial for quantization via the Selberg trace formula (periodic orbit theory), which in turn is expected to unravel the mystery of quantum chaos.  相似文献

Tracking unstable periodic orbits and its stabilization by large periodic modulation of a control parameter are studied numerically in the Hénon map and laser equations. Some important scaling relations linking the tracking range to the modulation amplitude and frequency are deduced. The results obtained with both models are compared. Experimental realization of dynamical tracking is demonstrated in a loss-driven CO2 laser where cavity detuning or losses are periodically modulated.  相似文献

We consider the classical continuous Widom and Rowlinson model. We follow the general method for describing metastable states proposed by Penrose and Lebowitz. Suitably restricting the set of the allowed configurations, we construct a nonequilibrium state describing a pure phase. Starting from the natural time evolution of the system, we rigorously prove that when both the activities are sufficiently large and close enough together, the relaxation time per unit volume can be made very large.  相似文献

An outstanding problem in chaotic dynamics is to specify generating partitions for symbolic dynamics in dimensions larger than 1. It has been known that the infinite number of unstable periodic orbits embedded in the chaotic invariant set provides sufficient information for estimating the generating partition. Here we present a general, dimension-independent, and efficient approach for this task based on optimizing a set of proximity functions defined with respect to periodic orbits. Our algorithm allows us to obtain the approximate location of the generating partition for the Ikeda-Hammel-Jones-Moloney map.  相似文献

We investigate statistical properties of unstable periodic orbits, especially actions for two simple linear maps (p-adic Baker map and sawtooth map). The action of periodic orbits for both maps is written in terms of symbolic dynamics. As a result, the expression of action for both maps becomes a Hamiltonian of one-dimensional spin systems with the exponential-type pair interaction. Numerical work is done for enumerating periodic orbits. It is shown that after symmetry reduction, the dyadic Baker map is close to generic systems, and the p-adic Baker map and sawtooth map with noninteger K are also close to generic systems. For the dyadic Baker map, the trace of the quantum time-evolution operator is semiclassically evaluated by employing the method of Phys. Rev. E 49, R963 (1994). Finally, using the result of this and with a mathematical tool, it is shown that, indeed, the actions of the periodic orbits for the dyadic Baker map with symmetry reduction obey the uniform distribution modulo 1 asymptotically as the period goes to infinity. We study estimators for dynamical quantities such as the topological entropy and the topological pressure which are based on numerical computations on periodic orbits. For the particular case of the Hénon family for some parameter ranges we find a reasonable convergence of the entropy, the pressure, and Birkhoff averages of test functions. However, pointing out possible pitfalls of such an analysis, we show that the evaluation by means of saddle orbits alone can be misleading if, for example, chaotic saddles and attractors coexist.  相似文献

The noise characteristic of available laser sources limits the sensitivity of saturated absorption spectroscopy. Time averaging is one method to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. A computer controlled dye-laser spectrometer is described which has the capability to scan several times any selected frequency range with an absolute accuracy of ±200 kHz. The sensitivity of this system is demonstrated by measuring the isotope shift of the low abundant38Ar and by detecting a weak83Kr-hyperfine component.  相似文献
