The hydrogenation kinetics of Mg is slow, impeding its application for mobile hydrogen storage. We demonstrate by ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations that the reaction path can be greatly modified by adding transition metal catalysts. Contrasting with Ti doping, a Pd dopant will result in a very small activation barrier for both dissociation of molecular hydrogen and diffusion of atomic H on the Mg surface. This new computational finding supports-for the first time by ab initio simulation-the proposed hydrogen spillover mechanism for rationalizing experimentally observed fast hydrogenation kinetics for Pd-capped Mg materials.  相似文献

Magnesium and its alloys have shown a great potential in effective hydrogen storage due to their advantages of high volumetric/gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity and low cost. However, the use of these materials in fuel cells for automotive applications at the present time is limited by high hydrogenation temperature and sluggish sorption kinetics. This paper presents the recent results of design and development of magnesium-based nanocomposites demonstrating the catalytic effects of carbon nanotubes and transition metals on hydrogen adsorption in these materials. The results are promising for the application of magnesium materials for hydrogen storage, with significantly reduced absorption temperatures and enhanced ab/desorption kinetics. High level Density Functional Theory calculations support the analysis of the hydrogenation mechanisms by revealing the detailed atomic and molecular interactions that underpin the catalytic roles of incorporated carbon and titanium, providing clear guidance for further design and development of such materials with better hydrogen storage properties.  相似文献

Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to explore possible catalytic effects on the dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen on a Mg(0001) surface when carbon is incorporated into Mg materials. The computational results imply that a C atom located initially on a Mg(0001) surface can migrate into the subsurface and occupy an fcc interstitial site, with charge transfer to the C atom from neighboring Mg atoms. The effect of subsurface C on the dissociation of H2 on the Mg(0001) surface is found to be relatively marginal: a perfect sublayer of interstitial C is calculated to lower the barrier by 0.16 eV compared with that on a pure Mg(0001) surface. Further calculations reveal, however, that sublayer C may have a significant effect in enhancing the diffusion of atomic hydrogen into the sublayers through fcc channels. This contributes new physical understanding toward rationalizing the experimentally observed improvement in absorption kinetics of H2 when graphite or single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) are introduced into the Mg powder during ball milling.  相似文献

The microstructure and absorption/desorption characteristics of composite MgH2 and 5 wt % as-prepared single-walled carbon nanotubes (MgH2-5ap) obtained by the mechanical grinding method were investigated. Experimental results show that the MgH2-5ap sample exhibits faster absorption kinetics and relatively lower desorption temperature than pure MgH2 or MgH2-purified single-walled carbon nanotube composite. Storage capacities of 6.0 and 4.2 wt % hydrogen for the MgH2-5ap composite were achieved in 60 min at 423 and 373 K, respectively. Furthermore, its desorption temperature was reduced by 70 K due to the introduction of as-prepared single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). In addition, the different effects of SWNTs and metallic catalysts contained in the as-prepared SWNTs were also investigated and a hydrogenation mechanism was proposed. It is suggested that metallic particles may be mainly responsible for the improvement of the hydrogen absorption kinetics, and SWNTs for the enhancement of hydrogen absorption capacity of MgH2.

The adsorption of atomic and molecular hydrogen on carbon-doped boron nitride nanotubes is investigated within the ab initio density functional theory. The binding energy of adsorbed hydrogen on carbon-doped boron nitride nanotube is substantially increased when compared with hydrogen on nondoped nanotube. These results are in agreement with experimental results for boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) where dangling bonds are present. The atomic hydrogen makes a chemical covalent bond with carbon substitution, while a physisorption occurs for the molecular hydrogen. For the H(2) molecule adsorbed on the top of a carbon atom in a boron site (BNNT + C(B)-H(2)), a donor defect level is present, while for the H(2) molecule adsorbed on the top of a carbon atom in a nitrogen site (BNNT + C(N)-H(2)), an acceptor defect level is present. The binding energies of H(2) molecules absorbed on carbon-doped boron nitride nanotubes are in the optimal range to work as a hydrogen storage medium.  相似文献

We have investigated atomic and electronic structures of hydrogen-chemisorbed single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) by density functional calculations. We have searched for relative stability of various hydrogen adsorption geometries with coverage. The hydrogenated SWCNTs are stable with coverage of H/C, theta >/= 0.3. The circular cross sections of nanotubes are transformed to polygonal shapes with different symmetries upon hydrogen adsorption. We find that the band gap in carbon nanotubes can be engineered by varying hydrogen coverage, independent of the metallicity of carbon nanotubes. This is explained by the degree of sp(3) hybridization.  相似文献

Magnesium-based materials provide some of the highest capacities for solid-state hydrogen storage. However, efforts to improve their performance rely on a comprehensive understanding of thermodynamic and kinetic limitations at various stages of (de)hydrogenation. Part of the complexity arises from the fact that unlike interstitial metal hydrides that retain the same crystal structures of the underlying metals, MgH2 and other magnesium-based hydrides typically undergo dehydrogenation reactions that are coupled to a structural phase transformation. As a first step towards enabling molecular dynamics studies of thermodynamics, kinetics, and (de)hydrogenation mechanisms of Mg-based solid-state hydrogen storage materials with changing crystal structures, we have developed an analytical bond order potential for Mg−H systems. We demonstrate that our potential accurately reproduces property trends of a variety of elemental and compound configurations with different coordinations, including small clusters and bulk lattices. More importantly, we show that our potential captures the relevant (de)hydrogenation chemical reactions 2H (gas)→H2 (gas) and 2H (gas)+Mg (hcp)→MgH2 (rutile) within molecular dynamics simulations. This verifies that our potential correctly prescribes the lowest Gibbs free energies to the equilibrium H2 and MgH2 phases as compared to other configurations. It also indicates that our molecular dynamics methods can directly reveal atomic processes of (de)hydrogenation of the Mg−H systems.  相似文献

We report the anisotropic atomic expansion dynamics of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, using 4D electron microscopy. From time-resolved diffraction on the picosecond to millisecond scale, following ultrafast heating at the rate of 10(13) K/s, it is shown that nanotubes expand only in the radial (intertubule) direction, whereas no significant change is observed in the intratubular axial or equatorial dimensions. The non-equilibrium heating occurs on an ultrafast time scale, indicating that the anisotropy is the result of an efficient electron-lattice coupling and is maintained up to equilibration. The recovery time, which measures the heat dissipation rate for equilibration, was found to be on the order of ~100 μs. This recovery is reproduced theoretically by considering the composite specimen-substrate heat exchange.  相似文献

Using in situ electrical conductivity and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, we have examined how the hydrogen uptake of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is influenced by the addition of Pt nanoparticles. The conductivity of platinum-sputtered single-walled carbon nanotubes (Pt-SWNTs) during molecular hydrogen exposure decreased more rapidly than that of the corresponding pure SWNTs, which supports a hydrogenation mechanism facilitated by "spillover" of dissociated hydrogen from the Pt nanoparticles. C 1s XPS spectra indicate that the Pt-SWNTs store hydrogen by means of chemisorption, that is, covalent C-H bond formation: molecular hydrogen charging at elevated pressure (8.27 bar) and room temperature yielded Pt-SWNTs with up to 16 ± 1.5 at. % sp(3)-hybridized carbon atoms, which corresponds to a hydrogen-storage capacity of 1.2 wt % (excluding the weight of Pt nanoparticles). Pt-SWNTs prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique exhibited the highest Pt/SWNT ratio and also the best hydrogen uptake.  相似文献

A mechanistic understanding on the enhanced kinetics of hydrogen storage in the NaBH(4)-added Mg(NH(2))(2)-2LiH system is provided by carrying out experimental investigations associated with first-principles calculations. It is found that the operating temperatures for hydrogen desorption of the Mg(NH(2))(2)-2LiH system are reduced by introducing NaBH(4), and the NaBH(4) species seems almost unchanged during dehydrogenation/hydrogenation process. First-principles calculations reveal that the presence of NaBH(4) in the Mg(NH(2))(2)-2LiH system facilitates the formation of Mg vacancies in Mg(NH(2))(2). The appearance of Mg vacancies not only weakens the N-H bonds but also promotes the diffusion of atoms and/or ions, consequently resulting in the improvement of the reaction kinetics of hydrogen desorption/absorption of the NaBH(4)-added Mg(NH(2))(2)-2LiH system. This finding provides us with a deep insight into the role played by NaBH(4) in the Li-Mg-N-H system, as well as ideas for designing high-performance catalysts for metal-N-H-based hydrogen storage media.  相似文献

We present a systematic experimental investigation of the reactions between hydrogen plasma and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) at various temperatures. Microscopy, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, and electrical transport measurements are carried out to investigate the properties of SWNTs after hydrogenation. Structural deformations, drastically reduced electrical conductance, and an increased semiconducting nature of SWNTs upon sidewall hydrogenation are observed. These changes are reversible upon thermal annealing at 500 degrees C via dehydrogenation. Harsh plasma or high temperature reactions lead to etching of nanotubes likely via hydrocarbonation. Smaller SWNTs are markedly less stable against hydrocarbonation than larger tubes. The results are fundamental and may have implications to basic and practical applications including hydrogen storage, sensing, band gap engineering for novel electronics, and new methods of manipulation, functionalization, and etching of nanotubes.  相似文献

The hydrogen adsorption energies for nitrogen-containing carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) and for bare carbon nanotubes were calculated using the density functional theory methods at the B3LYP/6–31-G(d) level, including dispersion force corrections. The N-CNTs were finite saturated and non-saturated single-walled carbon nanotubes that contained one or more pyrimidine units, the relative positions of which defined the different configurations of the nanotube. The chemisorption of atomic hydrogen to a full exocyclic monolayer of zigzag, armchair, and chiral N-CNTs was studied as a function of the structural parameters. Zigzag N-CNTs of any configuration, with a larger number of nitrogen atoms, a small diameter and a small length, are more reactive compared to chiral and armchair N-CNTs. The presence of nitrogen in the carbon nanotubes enhances their reactivity to chemisorb atomic hydrogen, showing exothermic energy values. In contrast, the physisorption of molecular hydrogen was endothermic for most of the studied saturated N-CNTs, even when including corrections for van der Waals interactions. The endothermicity was greatest for zigzag nanotubes, then decreased for chiral nanotubes and decreased again for armchair nanotubes. In general, the endothermicity decreased for longer nanotubes, which have larger diameters, and a small number of nitrogen atoms. The results of this study suggest that, with saturated bare carbon nanotubes, saturated, and unsaturated N-CNTs could potentially have a higher capacity as hydrogen-storage media than the corresponding unsaturated carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

Efficient hydrogen storage plays a key role in realizing the incoming hydrogen economy. However, it still remains a great challenge to develop hydrogen storage media with high capacity, favourable thermodynamics, fast kinetics, controllable reversibility, long cycle life, low cost and high safety. To achieve this goal, the combination of lightweight materials and nanostructures should offer great opportunities. In this article, we review recent advances in the field of chemical hydrogen storage that couples lightweight materials and nanostructures, focusing on Mg/MgH(2)-based systems. Selective theoretical and experimental studies on Mg/MgH(2) nanostructures are overviewed, with the emphasis on illustrating the influences of nanostructures on the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation mechanisms and hydrogen storage properties such as capacity, thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, theoretical studies have shown that the thermodynamics of Mg/MgH(2) clusters below 2 nm change more prominently as particle size decreases.  相似文献

A model for the adsorption of atomic hydrogen on the surfaces of single-walled zig-zag and armchair carbon nanotubes is constructed on the basis of the single-impurity periodic Anderson model. Features of the bands caused by the adsorption of hydrogen atoms in the structure of carbon nanotubes are studied. A reduction in the forbidden gap as a result of adsorption is revealed, and its dependence on the diameter of the semiconducting nanotubes is established. It is concluded that the model can be used to study the adsorption of other monovalent atoms on the surfaces of carbon particles.  相似文献

Hydrogen storage in ni nanoparticle-dispersed multiwalled carbon nanotubes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Hydrogen storage properties of mutiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with Ni nanoparticles were investigated. The metal nanoparticles were dispersed on MWCNTs surfaces using an incipient wetness impregnation procedure. Ni catalysts have been known to effectively dissociate hydrogen molecules in gas phase, providing atomic hydrogen possible to form chemical bonding with the surfaces of MWCNTs. Hydrogen desorption spectra of MWCNTs with 6 wt % of Ni nanoparticles showed that approximately 2.8 wt % hydrogen was released in the range of 340-520 K. In Kissinger's plot to evaluate the nature of interaction between hydrogen and MWCNTs with Ni nanoparticles, the hydrogen desorption activation energy was measured to be as high as approximately 31 kJ/mol.H(2), which is much higher than the estimates of pristine SWNTs. C-H(n)() stretching vibrations after hydrogenation in FTIR further supported that hydrogen molecules were dissociated when bound to the surfaces of MWCNTs. During cyclic hydrogen absorption/desorption, there was observed no significant decay in hydrogen desorption amount. The hydrogen chemisorption process facilitated by Ni nanopaticles could be suggested as an effective reversible hydrogen storage method.  相似文献

Electronic structures and formation mechanism of hydrogen functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT) have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) method. The mechanism of hydrogen addition reaction to the CNT surface was also investigated. Pure and boron-nitrogen (BN) substituted CNT (denoted by CNT and BN-CNT, respectively) were examined as the carbon nanotubes. It was found that the additions of hydrogen atom to B (boron atom) and C (carbon atom) sites of BN-CNT proceed without activation barrier, whereas the hydrogenation of N (nitrogen atom) site needs the activation energy. The electronic states of hydrogen functionalized CNT and BN-CNT were discussed on the basis of theoretical results.  相似文献

We combine experimental observations with ab initio calculations to study the reversible hydrogenation of single-wall carbon nanotubes using high boiling polyamines as hydrogenation reagents. Our calculations characterize the nature of the adsorption bond and identify preferential adsorption geometries at different coverages. We find the barrier for sigmatropic rearrangement of chemisorbed hydrogen atoms to be approximately 1 eV, thus facilitating surface diffusion and formation of energetically favored, axially aligned adsorbate chains. Chemisorbed hydrogen modifies the structure and stability of nanotubes significantly and increases the inter-tube distance, thus explaining the improved dispersability in solvents like methanol, ethanol, chloroform, and benzene.  相似文献

The interaction of atomic hydrogen with clean and deuterium precovered Ru(1010) was studied by means of temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectroscopy. Compared to molecular hydrogen experiments, after exposure of the clean surface to gas-phase atomic hydrogen at 90 K, two additional peaks grow in the desorption spectra at 115 and 150 K. The surface saturation coverage, determined by equilibrium between abstraction and adsorption reactions, is 2.5 monolayers. Preadsorbed deuterium abstraction experiments with gas-phase atomic hydrogen show that a pure Eley-Rideal mechanism is not involved in the process, while a hot atom (HA) kinetics describes well the reaction. By least-squares fitting of the experimental data, a simplified HA kinetic model yields an abstraction cross section value of 0.5 +/- 0.2 angstroms2. The atomic hydrogen interaction with an oxygen precovered surface was also studied by means of both TPD and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy: oxygen hydrogenation and water production take place already at very low temperature (90 K).  相似文献

Studies on the creation of nanosized membrane reactors (NMRs) of a new generation with accumulated hydrogen and a regulated volume of reaction zone were continued at the next stage. Hydrogenation was performed in the pores of ceramic membranes with hydrogen preliminarily adsorbed in mono- and multilayered orientated carbon nanotubes with graphene walls (OCNTGs)—a new hybrid carbon nanostructure formed on the inner pore surface. Quantitative determination of hydrogen adsorption in OCNTGs was performed using TRUMEM ultrafiltration membranes with D av = 50 and 90 nm and showed that hydrogen adsorption was up to ~1.5% of the mass of OCNTG. The instrumentation and procedure for noncatalytic hydrogenation of decene-1 at 250–350°C using hydrogen accumulated and stored in OCNTG were developed. The conversion of decene-1 into decane was ~0.2–1.8% at hydrogenation temperatures of 250 and 350°C, respectively. The rate constants and activation energy of hydrogenation were determined. The latter was found to be 94.5 kJ/mol, which is much smaller than the values typical for noncatalytic hydrogenations and very close to the values characteristic for catalytic reactions. The quantitative distribution of the reacting compounds in each pore regarded as a nanosized membrane reactor was determined. The activity of hydrogen adsorbed in a 2D carbon nanostructure was evaluated. Possible mechanisms of noncatalytic hydrogenation were discussed.  相似文献
