In this paper we discuss the global behaviour of some connected sets of solutions of a broad class of second order quasilinear elliptic equations for where is a real parameter and the function u is required to satisfy the condition The basic tool is the degree for proper Fredholm maps of index zero in the form due to Fitzpatrick, Pejsachowicz and Rabier. To use this degree the problem must be expressed in the form where J is an interval, X and Y are Banach spaces and F is a map which is Fredholm and proper on closed bounded subsets. We use the usual spaces and . Then the main difficulty involves finding general conditions on and b which ensure the properness of F. Our approach to this is based on some recent work where, under the assumption that and b are asymptotically periodic in x as $\left| x\right| \rightarrow\infty$, we have obtained simple conditions which are necessary and sufficient for to be Fredholm and proper on closed bounded subsets of X. In particular, the nonexistence of nonzero solutions in X of the asymptotic problem plays a crucial role in this issue. Our results establish the bifurcation of global branches of solutions for the general problem. Various special cases are also discussed. Even for semilinear equations of the form our results cover situations outside the scope of other methods in the literature. We give verifiable conditions ensuring that second order quasilinear elliptic equations on have infinitely many solutions in the Sobolev space for generic right-hand sides. This amounts to translating in concrete terms the more elusive hypotheses of an abstract theorem. Salient points include the proof that a key denseness property is equivalent to the existence of nontrivial solutions to an auxiliary problem, and an estimate of the size of the set of critical points of nonlinear Schrödinger operators. Conditions for the real-analyticity of Nemytskii operators are also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the following semilinear elliptic equations $$-\triangle u+V(x)u=f(x,u), \ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^{N},$$ where $V\in C(\mathbb{R}^{N}, \mathbb{R})$ and $f\in C(\mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R})$. Under some suitable conditions, we prove that the equation has three solutions of mountain pass type: one positive, one negative, and sign-changing. Furthermore, if $f$ is odd with respect to its second variable, this problem has infinitely many sign-changing solutions.  相似文献

Isometric embeddings of $\mathbb{Z}_{p^n+1}$ into the Hamming space ( $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{p^n},w$ ) have played a fundamental role in recent constructions of non-linear codes. The codes thus obtained are very good codes, but their rate is limited by the rate of the first-order generalized Reed–Muller code—hence, when n is not very small, these embeddings lead to the construction of low-rate codes. A natural question is whether there are embeddings with higher rates than the known ones. In this paper, we provide a partial answer to this question by establishing a lower bound on the order of a symmetry of ( $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{N},w$ ).  相似文献

Given a Lie group G with a bi-invariant metric and a compact Lie subgroup K, Bittencourt and Ripoll used the homogeneous structure of quotient spaces to define a Gauss map ${\mathcal{N}:M^{n}\rightarrow{\mathbb{S}}}$ on any hypersupersurface ${M^{n}\looparrowright G/K}$ , where ${{\mathbb{S}}}$ is the unit sphere of the Lie algebra of G. It is proved in Bittencourt and Ripoll (Pacific J Math 224:45–64, 2006) that M n having constant mean curvature (CMC) is equivalent to ${\mathcal{N}}$ being harmonic, a generalization of a Ruh–Vilms theorem for submanifolds in the Euclidean space. In particular, when n = 2, the induced quadratic differential ${\mathcal{Q}_{\mathcal{N}}:=(\mathcal{N}^{\ast}g)^{2,0}}$ is holomorphic on CMC surfaces of G/K. In this paper, we take ${G/K={\mathbb{S}}^{2}\times{\mathbb{R}}}$ and compare ${\mathcal{Q}_{\mathcal{N}}}$ with the Abresch–Rosenberg differential ${\mathcal{Q}}$ , also holomorphic for CMC surfaces. It is proved that ${\mathcal{Q}=\mathcal{Q}_{\mathcal{N}}}$ , after showing that ${\mathcal{N}}$ is the twisted normal given by (1.5) herein. Then we define the twisted normal for surfaces in ${{\mathbb{H}}^{2}\times{\mathbb{R}}}$ and prove that ${\mathcal{Q}=\mathcal{Q}_{\mathcal{N}}}$ as well. Within the unified model for the two product spaces, we compute the tension field of ${\mathcal{N}}$ and extend to surfaces in ${{\mathbb{H}}^{2}\times{\mathbb{R}}}$ the equivalence between the CMC property and the harmonicity of ${\mathcal{N}.}$   相似文献

The large time behaviour of the Lq L^q -norm of nonnegative solutions to the "anisotropic" viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation¶¶ ut - Du + ?i=1m |uxi|pi = 0      in   \mathbbR+×\mathbbRN,u_t - \Delta u + \sum_{i=1}^m \vert u_{x_i}\vert^{p_i} = 0 \;\;\mbox{ in }\; {\mathbb{R}}_+\times{\mathbb{R}}^N,¶¶is studied for q=1 q=1 and q=¥ q=\infty , where m ? {1,?,N} m\in\{1,\ldots,N\} and pi ? [1,+¥) p_i\in [1,+\infty) for i ? {1,?,m} i\in\{1,\ldots,m\} . The limit of the L1 L^1 -norm is identified, and temporal decay estimates for the L L^\infty -norm are obtained, according to the values of the pi p_i 's. The main tool in our approach is the derivation of L L^\infty -decay estimates for ?(ua ), a ? (0,1] \nabla\left(u^\alpha \right), \alpha\in (0,1] , by a Bernstein technique inspired by the ones developed by Bénilan for the porous medium equation.  相似文献

We study the rank-one convex hull of compact sets . We show that if K contains no two matrices whose difference has rank one, and if K contains no four matrices forming a T 4 configuration, then the rank-one convex hull K rc is equal to K. Furthermore, we give a simple numerical criterion for testing for T 4 configurations. In this paper we classify the complete rotational special Weingarten surfaces in ${\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}}$ and ${\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}}$ ; i.e. rotational surfaces in ${\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{R}}$ and ${\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}}$ whose mean curvature H and extrinsic curvature K e satisfy H = f(H 2 ? K e ), for some function ${f \in \mathcal{C}^1([0,+\infty))}$ such that f(0) = 0 and 4x(f′(x))2 < 1 for any x ≥ 0. Furthermore we show the existence of non-complete examples of such surfaces.  相似文献

Given a simplicial complex K, we consider several notions of geometric complexity of embeddings of K in a Euclidean space \({\mathbb{R}^d}\) : thickness, distortion, and refinement complexity (the minimal number of simplices needed for a PL embedding). We show that any n-complex with N simplices which topologically embeds in \({\mathbb{R}^{2n}, n > 2}\) , can be PL embedded in \({\mathbb{R}^{2n}}\) with refinement complexity \({O(e^{N^{4+{\epsilon}}})}\) . Families of simplicial n-complexes K are constructed such that any embedding of K into \({\mathbb{R}^{2n}}\) has an exponential lower bound on thickness and refinement complexity as a function of the number of simplices of K. This contrasts embeddings in the stable range, \({K\subset \mathbb{R}^{2n+k}, k > 0}\) , where all known bounds on geometric complexity functions are polynomial. In addition, we give a geometric argument for a bound on distortion of expander graphs in Euclidean spaces. Several related open problems are discussed, including questions about the growth rate of complexity functions of embeddings, and about the crossing number and the ropelength of classical links.  相似文献

We find a Simons type formula for submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector (pmc submanifolds) in product spaces M n (c)×?, where M n (c) is a space form with constant sectional curvature c, and then we use it to prove a gap theorem for the mean curvature of certain complete proper-biharmonic pmc submanifolds, and classify proper-biharmonic pmc surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^{n}(c)\times\mathbb{R}$ .  相似文献

A bifurcation problem for variational inequalities
,
is studied, where K is a closed convex cone in , 3, B is a × matrix, G is a small perturbation, a real parameter. The main goal of the paper is to simplify the assumptions of the abstract results concerning the existence of a bifurcation of periodic solutions developed in the previous paper and to give examples in more than three dimensional case.  相似文献

For a sequence $\underline{u}=(u_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N }}$ of integers, let $t_{\underline{u}}(\mathbb{T })$ be the group of all topologically $\underline{u}$ -torsion elements of the circle group $\mathbb{T }:=\mathbb{R }/\mathbb{Z }$ . We show that for any $s\in ]0,1[$ and $m\in \{0,+\infty \}$ there exists $\underline{u}$ such that $t_{\underline{u}}(\mathbb{T })$ has Hausdorff dimension $s$ and $s$ -dimensional Hausdorff measure equal to $m$ (no other values for $m$ are possible). More generally, for dimension functions $f,g$ with $f(t)\prec g(t), f(t)\prec \!\!\!\prec t$ and $g(t)\prec \!\!\!\prec t$ we find $\underline{u}$ such that $t_{\underline{u}}(\mathbb{T })$ has at the same time infinite $f$ -measure and null $g$ -measure.  相似文献
