In this work, a non-steady-state photo-emf receiver has been used to detect the lower frequency fundamental a0 Lamb waves in mild steel. Experimentally, the Lamb waves are laser-generated in the thermoelastic regime using a Q-switched, 20 ns, pulsed Nd:YAG laser and a line source. Typical Lamb waves had centre frequencies of 250 kHz but with frequency components that extended beyond 1 MHz. In mild steel, higher order Lamb wave modes were not considered to be significant below a frequency thickness product of 1.6 MHz mm. Below this level, associated velocity dispersion curve offered phase velocity changes that were sensitive to thickness change. Samples up to 5 mm in thickness were examined without significant interference from higher order modes. A non-steady-state photo-emf detector used as the ultrasonic detector had the advantage of a lower frequency cut-off at 100 kHz compared to a confocal Fabry-Pérot interferometer (CFPI) of about 2 MHz. Both schemes offered greater stand-off distance (>20 cm) than is possible with EMATs, which have a stand-off distance less than 1.0 mm. Progress made in detecting wall thinning in steel plate with thickness up to 5 mm is reported.  相似文献

The last decade has seen a surge in the development of axial transmission QUS (Quantitative UltraSound) technologies for the assessment of long bones using various modes of acoustic waves. The condition of cortical bones and the development of osteoporosis are determined by numerous mechanical, micro-structural, and geometrical or macro-structural bone properties like hardness, porosity and cortical thickness. Such complex manifestations of osteoporosis require the evaluation of multiple parameters with different sensitivities to the various properties of bone that are affected by the disease. This objective may be achieved by using a multi-frequency ultrasonic examination The ratio of the acoustic wavelength to the cortical thickness can be changed by varying the frequency of the ultrasonic pulse propagating through the long bone that results in the change in composition of the induced wave comprised of a set of numerous modes of guided, longitudinal, and surface acoustic waves. The multi-frequency axial transmission QUS method developed at Artann Laboratories (Trenton, NJ) is implemented in the Bone Ultrasonic Scanner (BUSS). In the current version of the BUSS, a train of ultrasonic pulses with 60, 100, 400, 800, and 1200 kHz frequencies is used. The developed technology was tested on a variety of bone phantoms simulating normal, osteopenic, and osteoporotic bones. The results of this study confirm the feasibility of the multi-frequency approach for the assessment of the processes leading to osteoporosis.  相似文献

Lamb waves are normally utilized for inspecting thin metal sheets. Wheel type probes using piezoelectric oscillators have generally been used as the sensors for Lamb waves. Recently, the electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) has been developed and is beginning to be used as a Lamb wave detector. We have developed a useful type of transducer for Lamb waves. The new EMAT consists of a meander coil with a narrow distance of 2.5 mm and has a symmetrical structure in the vertical direction for both surface sides. The new EMAT can generate Lamb waves with variable wavelengths corresponding to the frequency range from approximately 300 kHz to 2.5 MHz and multiple modes, and can also generate selected symmetrical and anti-symmetrical mode Lamb waves. It is demonstrated that the optimum Lamb wave mode could be produced by the appropriate positioning of the EMATs and controlling the phase (same or inversed) of the electrical signal driving the device. The described EMAT can be used to examine steel (or other material) sheets of different thickness. It is also shown that the S0 (0.3 MHz) mode Lamb wave is the most effective for the deepest (up to 6 mm) penetration.  相似文献

The present study aims to investigate the propagation of time-reversed Lamb waves in acrylic cylindrical tubes as cortical-bone-mimicking phantoms. Time-reversed Lamb waves could be successfully launched in 6 acrylic tubes with wall thicknesses from 2 to 12 mm by using a modified time reversal method. The group velocities of the time-reversed Lamb waves in the acrylic tubes were measured by using the axial transmission technique. They decreased very slightly with increasing wall thickness, showing good agreement with the theoretical group velocity of the A0 Lamb wave in the acrylic plate. These results suggest that the time-reversed Lamb waves in the acrylic tubes would essentially behave as the A0 Lamb wave, consistent with the behavior of the slow guided wave in long cortical bones. It is expected that the application of the time-reversed Lamb waves in long bones would enhance clinical potential of ultrasonic technologies for the diagnosis of osteoporosis.  相似文献

Correlations between ultrasonic guided wave velocities and bone properties were investigated in bovine tibia in vitro. The velocities of the first arriving signal and the slow guided wave, termed V(FAS) and V(SGW), along the long axis of the tibia were measured at 200 kHz in 20 bovine tibiae using the axial transmission technique. V(FAS) yielded significant negative correlation coefficients of -0.54 to -0.66 with the bone properties. In contrast, V(SGW) yielded strong positive correlation coefficients of 0.68-0.84. The best univariate predictor of V(FAS) and V(SGW) was the cortical thickness yielding adjusted squared correlation coefficients of 0.41 and 0.69, respectively.  相似文献

超声导波在长骨中传播时,接收信号中含有相互叠加的多个导波模式。本文提出将希尔伯特-黄变换(HHT)用于分析叠加的多模式导波信号,将其分解成许多单个独立的模式,然后对分解出的模式求得其对应频率下的群速度,并与短时傅里叶变换所得的结果进行比较。通过与理论计算结果比较,可得到长骨皮质骨的厚度。研究结果表明,实验得到的厚度与实际厚度一致。说明通过测量导波模式的速度可以评价皮质骨的厚度,也说明HHT方法是一种识别叠加多模式导波信号的有效方法。  相似文献

Multiple acoustic wave mode method has been proposed as a new modality in axial bone QUS. The new method is based on measurement of ultrasound velocity at different ratio of wavelength to the bone thickness, and taking into account both bulk and guided waves. It allows assessment of changes in both the material properties related to porosity and mineralization as well as the cortical thickness influenced by resorption from inner layers, which are equally important in diagnostics of osteoporosis and other bone osteopenia. Developed method was validated in model studies using a dual-frequency (100 and 500 kHz) ultrasound device. Three types of bone phantoms for long bones were developed and tested: (1) tubular specimens from polymer materials to model combined changes of material stiffness and cortical wall thickness; (2) layered specimens to model porosity in compact bone progressing from endosteum towards periosteum; (3) animal bone specimens with both cortical and trabecular components. Observed changes of the ultrasound velocity of guided waves at 100 kHz followed gradual changes in the thickness of the intact cortical layer. On the other hand, the bulk velocity at 500 kHz remained nearly constant at the different cortical layer thickness but was affected by the material stiffness. Similar trends were observed in phantoms and in fragments of animal bones.  相似文献

考虑了压电传感器(PZT)与板之间的耦合作用,从理论上研究了单个压电传感器激发时产生单模式兰姆波的频率调节方法,实验给出了模式选择在兰姆波结构健康监测中的应用. 在板材、板厚以及PZT尺寸一定的情况下,从理论上能够预测到作为频率函数的各兰姆波模式的幅值变化. 根据某特定兰姆波模式的幅值最大而其他模式幅值相对最小时所对应的频率,即可识别出该兰姆波模式优化的激发频率. 数值仿真验证了理论的有效性以及单模式兰姆波选择的可能性. 在不同的激发频率下,分别激发了优化的A0 模式,优化的S0模式以及共存的A0和S0模 关键词: 兰姆波 压电传感器 激发频率 结构健康监测  相似文献

Liquid level sensor using ultrasonic Lamb waves   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
This paper describes a novel, noninvasive method for measurement of liquid level in closed metal tanks that are under high pressure. It is based on the use of ultrasonic Lamb waves propagating along the tank wall. Contact with liquid substantially changes the characteristics of these waves and this can be used as an indicator of liquid presence. Theoretical analysis shows that the symmetric and antisymmetric Lamb wave modes, both fundamental and higher order, are sensitive to presence of the liquid. The optimal wave frequency depends on the thickness of the tank wall and wall material. A prototype level sensor based on this principle has been developed. It uses two pairs of wedge transducers to generate and detect Lamb waves propagating along the circumference of the gas tank. An operating frequency of 100 kHz is found to be optimal for use with tanks having a wall thickness of 30-50 mm. Prototype sensors developed under this program have been used successfully in oil fields in the far northern region of Russia.  相似文献

This paper revisits the vanishing of the transverse component of the particle displacement vector in free surfaces of an isotropic homogeneous plate, for both symmetric and antisymmetric Lamb waves. Drawing on well-known analytical expressions from Viktorov's book [(1967) Rayleigh and Lamb Waves: Physical Theory Applications, Chap. II, pp. 67-121], two distinct frequency-thickness product expressions, in cases where this vanishing occurs, are derived: one for the symmetric modes and another for the antisymmetric modes. At these frequency-thickness products, phase and group velocities have appreciable values which are discussed herein. It appears that these velocities depend on the transverse bulk wave velocity only. This is the specific condition of the Lame? modes. Moreover, theoretical and experimental investigations of displacements in the surface of a plate in air have been carried out. The theoretical part shows that the normal and transverse displacements have, respectively, a local maximum and a local minimum in the vicinity of these frequency-thickness products. The experimental part corroborates the presence of the local maximum of the S(0) Lamb mode for various materials.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the generation of transient Lamb waves inside an immersed plate by a time limited signal. The transient Lamb waves are the solutions of the characteristic equation of the plate for complex frequency and real slowness, in contrast to the leaky Lamb waves, for which the slowness is complex and the frequency is real. By using a large transducer in agreement with the real slowness assumption, the excitation of these transient Lamb waves is observed experimentally both in reflection and transmission for a tone burst excitation. Particular attention is paid to the A0 mode for which the amplitude increases exponentially in time. As a result, the total reflected waveform contains in this case a transient contribution, coming from the generation of the A0 mode, that precedes the forced regime. It is shown that there is a very good agreement between the theoretical and the experimental time exponential amplitude variations of the transient Lamb waves. For the A0 mode, the transient signal is qualitatively explained by a group velocity higher than the phase velocity.  相似文献

针对兰姆波多模态识别问题,提出了基于小样本字典学习的模态识别方法。将多层复合板的频散特性看作一个线性时不变系统,首先,根据频散知识模拟各个模态传播特定距离后的信号,提取走时和能量特征创建字典;其次,获取待测信号的走时特征,通过查询字典来识别兰姆波模态;最后,根据能量参数估计结果,实现待测信号中各模态信号的分离和重构。通过对三层粘接的AAA板(铝板-亚克力板-铝板,每层厚度为2mm)中传播距离为0.3m、0.5m的直达波和反射波的实验验证,结果显示该方法对A0、S0模态的有效识别和各个波包信号的准确重建。  相似文献

A semi-analytical finite element method (SAFE) has been widely used for calculating dispersion curves and mode shapes of guided waves as well as transient waves in a bar like structures. Although guided wave inspection is often conducted for water-loaded plates and pipes, most of the SAFE techniques have not been extended to a plate with leaky media. This study describes leaky Lamb wave calculation with the SAFE. We formulated a new solution using a feature that a single Lamb wave mode generates a harmonic plane wave in leaky media. Dispersion curves obtained with the SAFE agreed well with the previous theoretical studies, which represents that the SAFE calculation was conducted with sufficient accuracy. Moreover, we discussed dispersion curves, attenuation curves, and displacement distributions for total transmission modes and leaky plate modes in a single side and both two side water-loaded plate.  相似文献

This article presents the interaction of the first symmetric Lamb mode S0 with vertical cracks in an aluminium plate placed in vacuum. The cracks are symmetrical regarding to the median plane of the plate and their heights are increasing from 0% to 100% of the plate thickness, by steps of 25%. The frequency-thickness product is chosen to be lower than the S1 frequency cut-off. A modal decomposition method is used to solve the diffraction problem. The variation with the height of the crack of the reflection and transmission coefficients of modes propagating in the far field is predicted. The displacement fields at both sides of the cracks are also calculated, so that it is possible to quantify the crack-opening displacement. These results are compared to numerical predictions obtained using a finite element software. Measurements are also conducted and compared to the predictions.  相似文献

In recent years, quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has played an increasing role in the assessment of bone status. The axial transmission technique allows to investigate skeletal sites such as the cortical layer of long bones (radius, tibia), inadequate to through-transmission techniques. Nevertheless, the type of propagation involved along bone specimens has not been clearly elucidated. Axial transmission is investigated here by means of two-dimensional simulations at 1 MHz. We focus our interest on the apparent speed of sound (SOS) of the first arriving signal (FAS). Its dependence on the thickness of the plate is discussed and compared to previous work. Different time criteria are used to derive the apparent SOS of the FAS as a function of source-receiver distance. Frequency-wave number analysis is performed in order to understand the type of propagation involved. For thick plates (thickness>lambdabone, longitudinal wavelength in bone), and for a limited range of source-receiver distances, the FAS corresponds to the lateral wave. Its velocity equals the longitudinal bulk velocity of the bone. For plate thickness less than lambdabone, some plate modes contribute to the FAS, and the apparent SOS decreases with the thickness in a way that depends on both the time criterion and on the source-receiver distance. The FAS corresponds neither to the lateral wave nor to a single plate mode. For very thin plates (thickness< lambdabone/4), the apparent SOS tends towards the velocity of the lowest order symmetrical vibration mode (S0 Lamb mode).  相似文献

This paper presents a combined finite element and modal decomposition method to study the interaction of Lamb waves with damaged area. The finite element mesh is used to describe the region around the defects. On the contrary to other hybrid models already developed, the interaction between Lamb waves and defects is computed in the temporal domain. Then, the modal decomposition method permits to determine the wave reflected and transmitted by the damaged area. Modal analysis allows also identifying the mode conversions induced by the defects. These numerical results agree with previous finite element results concerning the interaction of Lamb modes with a notch. Experiments, carried out with gauged defects on an aluminum plate, are also compared to numerical predictions to validate the simulation. Compared to classical techniques of simulation, this new method allows us to investigate the interaction of Lamb modes generated at high frequency-thickness product with micro-defects as corrosion pitting.  相似文献

An oscillator using high order Lamb wave modes is presented. Due to the multimode property of Lamb waves, high frequency oscillators using high order mode Lamb waves can be fabricated. To select the operating mode of the Lamb wave oscillator, a high order mode selector is inserted into the feedback loop. An oscillator using the 13th antisymmetric mode (a13) in Lamb wave is achieved in experiments and the oscillating frequency is 5.30 times higher than that of the a0 mode excited by the interdigital transducer.  相似文献
