A novel method is proposed that reduces the bit error rate (BER) in an optically amplified system by using a Mach-Zender interferometer coherence manipulation at the receiver. Exact analysis is presented, which shows that the signal-to-noise ratio can be improved by 3 dB. Resulting BER improvements are presented.  相似文献

We introduce a family of power-conserving fiber-optic interferometer designs for low-coherence reflectometry that use optical circulators, unbalanced couplers, and (or) balanced heterodyne detection. Simple design equations for optimization of the signal-to-noise ratio of the interferometers are expressed in terms of relevant signal and noise sources and measurable system parameters. We use the equations to evaluate the expected performance of the new configurations compared with that of the standard Michelson interferometer that is commonly used in optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems. The analysis indicates that improved sensitivity is expected for all the new interferometer designs, compared with the sensitivity of the standard OCT interferometer, under high-speed imaging conditions.  相似文献

A novel coherent Doppler lidar (CDL) system based on single-mode fiber (SMF) components and instruments is presented to measure the speed of target. A fiber interferometer used in CDL system is reported.This fiber mixer is employed as a coherent receiver to resolve the shifts of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and mixing efficiency induced by backscattered field's wavefront error. For a certain wavelength, the maximum coupling efficiency between signal and SMF is determined by the ratio of pupil diameter to focal length of the coupling lens. The legible interference patterns and spectrum signals show that fiber interferometer is suitable to compensate for amplitude and phase vibrations. This robust coherent receiver can achieve improved CDL system performance with less transmitter power.  相似文献

At the mirrors of a laser diode self-mixing interferometer, the output beams carry anti-correlated(i.e., in phase opposition)interferometric signals, whereas the superposed noise fluctuations are(partially) correlated. Therefore, by using an instrumental output of the interferometer as the difference of the two, we double the amplitude of the self-mixing useful signal,while the superposed noise is reduced. To validate the idea, we first calculate the noise reduction by means of a secondquantization model, finding that in a laser diode the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) can be improved by 8.2 d B, typically. Then, we also carry out an experimental measurement of SNR and find very good agreement with the theoretical result.  相似文献

This investigation demonstrates a stable multiwavelength fiber ring laser with ultra-narrow wavelength spacing using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). A delay interferometer and a mirror are used as a double-pass interferometer to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in this experiment. Up to 181 stable lasing wavelengths with a wavelength spacing of 10.7 GHz and a signal-to-noise ratio of over 24 dB are produced at room temperature.  相似文献

A nanosecond pulse discharge circuit is developed and used to enhance the optical emission of laser plasma. An intense discharge spark was observed with a peak discharge current of 1.9 kA and a peak power of 6.5 MW. The main electric energy deposition only lasted for ~40 ns. An intense optical emission was observed. The line intensity of plasma emission was greatly increased along with an improved signal-to-noise ratio, in comparison with that using a microsecond pulse discharge circuit. From the measured spectra, electron temperature and electron number density were estimated. The mechanism of the optical emission enhancement was briefly discussed.  相似文献

The signal-to-shot-noise ratio is calculated for three types of laser interferometers used in gravitational wave detectors: for two types of Fabry-Perot interferometers (with direct reading of the output signal and with the modulation technique used for outcoupling the signal) and for the Michelson interferometer with Fabry-Perot arms. It is shown that the signal-to-noise ratio can be substantially increased by using “supermirrors” with losses of the order of 10 ?6. It is very important, in this case, to properly choose the mirror transmittance, because, otherwise, the sensitivity inevitably decreases by orders of magnitude and the requirements of lasers become more stringent. The efforts to increase the signal-to-noise ratio by increasing the power are limited either by an insufficient laser power or by the overheating of interferometer mirrors. Our estimates show that the present-day technical level with laser power of about 1 W provides sufficient sensitivity for detecting gravitational waves.  相似文献
