Uranium samples of various enrichments have been passively counted on the University of Texas detector gamma–gamma coincidence system. By observing gamma rays emitted from 235U and its daughters compared to gamma rays emitted by 238U daughters and comparing the data to standards of known enrichments, a technique has been developed to take a uranium sample of unknown enrichment and passively count it to determine its uranium isotopic concentration. Because the gamma rays from 235U are generally in the low-energy regime, there is a strong susceptibility to background interferences, especially from the Compton background produced from higher energy gamma rays. Other interferences, such as those from the decay series of uranium also exist for 235U gamma rays. In this light, we have collected data using list-mode to produce two-dimensional gamma–gamma coincidence spectra, which allows us to gate the low-energy gamma rays from 235U with gamma rays that are in coincidence. In doing this, much of the low energy interferences are reduced, and one can analyze the 235U gamma rays with high precision. Because of the high density of uranium, self-shielding has significant effects especially in the low-energy regime. To correct for this attenuation the detector system has been modeled by MCNP and self-shielding factors have been calculated across the energy spectrum. A big advantage to this method is the capability of performing this analysis with small (<1 g) samples in a non-destructive and relatively inexpensive manner. If necessary, this analysis can be performed within 24 h if an urgent nuclear forensics scenario arises.  相似文献

An automated delayed-neutron activation analysis system has been installed at the NIST research reactor. This work involved characterization of the transfer time of the system, evaluation of blanks, and tests of the system’s analytical capabilities through quantitative analysis for uranium in several natural matrix standard reference materials (SRMs). The calibration curve was shown to be linear up to at least 20 μg of uranium, and the well-thermalized reactor irradiation position makes the system insensitive to thorium and oxygen. For SRMs 1646a Estuarine Sediment and 2710a Montana Soil the values determined for this work agree with the reference and certified values, respectively. The mass fraction of uranium in SRM 695 Multi-Nutrient Fertilizer is the first reported for this material. For this system and the irradiation, transfer, and counting times used, the limit of detection for natural uranium is 20 ng, which corresponds to approximately 200 pg of 235U.  相似文献

An automated delayed neutron counting (DNC) system has been developed at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) to enhance nuclear forensics capabilities pertaining to special nuclear material analysis. The system utilises the SLOWPOKE-2 Facility at RMC as a neutron source and 3He detectors. System control and data acquisition occur through a LabVIEW platform. The time dependent count rate of the delayed neutron production has been examined for 235U, using certified reference materials. Experimental validation according to ISO 17025 protocols suggests typical errors and precision of −3.6 and 3.1%, respectively, and a detection limit of 0.26 μg 235U.  相似文献

This paper describes an evaluation of activation analysis by delayed neutron counting to determine uranium and thorium simultaneously in geological materials and to measure235U/238U isotopic ratios. A procedure to isolate the thorium before the irradiation was studied and adapted for use when the interference of uranium makes the nondestructive thorium analysis impossible.235U/238U ratios were determined in standards with235U abundances from about 0.5 to 93%, in milligram size samples. Discussion on precision, accuracy and total error of the method is presented. From a thesis submitted by M. J. A. A rapid non-destructive neutron activation technique for the determination of the238U/235U ratio is described. Reagent grade uranium salts from commercial sources have a widely variable238U/235U ratio. The isotopic composition of uranium found in such salts is quite different from the natural value. This difference is largely due to the use of by-product uranium depleted in235U.  相似文献

Being aware of the importance to consider every step in the evaluation of the combined measurement uncertainty of the result, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the contribution of the radial thermal neutron flux gradient to the uncertainty budget for trace level uranium determination in biological materials by a radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA). Determination of uranium via the short-lived nuclide 239U was based on solvent extraction with TBP and measurement of the chemical yield from the gamma-ray spectrum of the isolated fraction via 235U. It has been shown previously, that radial neutron flux gradient, could have a relevant effect on the final result obtained by RNAA. In the present work, radial neutron flux gradient within the irradiation assembly generally accepted in our lab (standards tapped beside the sample), varied between 93 and 108% around the mean value and contributes approximately 20% to the combined measurement uncertainty of the result.  相似文献

Groundwater in arid and semiarid regions is vital resource for many uses and therefore information about concentrations of uranium isotopes among other chemical parameters are necessary. In the study presented here, distribution of 238U and 235U in groundwater of four selected locations in the southern Arabian peninsula, namely at two locations within the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and two locations in Oman are discussed. The analyses of the uranium isotopes were performed using ICP-MS and the results indicated a range of concentrations for 235U and 238 U at 3–39 ng L?1 (average: 18 ng L?1) and 429–5,293 ng L?1 (average: 2,508 ng L?1) respectively. These uranium concentrations are below the higher permissible WHO limit for drinking water and also comparable to averages found in groundwater from similar aquifers in Florida and Tunisia. Negative correlation between rainfall and uranium concentrations suggests that in lithologically comparable aquifers, climate may influence the concentration of uranium in subtropical to arid regions.  相似文献

Uranium concentration in groundwater reflect both redox conditions and uranium content in host rock. In the present study an attempt has been made to study the uranium concentration and activity ratios of uranium isotopes to present the geochemical conditions of the groundwater in Malwa region of Punjab state, India and the reason for high uranium levels and variation of activity ratios from secular equilibrium conditions. Uranium concentration in groundwater samples was found to be in the range of 13.9 ± 1.2 to 172.8 ± 12.3 μg/l with an average value of 72.9 μg/l which is higher than the national and international guideline values. On the basis of uranium concentration, the groundwater of the study region may be classified as oxidized aquifer on normal uranium content strata (20 %) or oxidized aquifer on enhanced uranium content strata (80 %). The 238U, 235U and 234U isotopic concentration in groundwater samples was found to be in the range of 89.2–1534.5, 4.4–68.5, and 76.4–1386.2 mBq/l, respectively. Activity ratios of 234U/238U varies from 0.94 to 1.85 with a mean value of 1.11 which is close to unity that shows secular equilibrium condition. High value of 234U isotope than 238U may be due to alpha recoil phenomenon. The plot of AR of 234U/238U against the total uranium content in log scale reveals that the groundwaters of the study region either belongs to stable accumulation or normal oxidized aquifer.  相似文献

A study was initiated to investigate the chronological deposition of uranium in certain species of trees growing on the site of a former uranium metal processing facility. The Feed Materials Production Center (FMPC) is located in Fernald, Ohio, and for roughly 40 years operated as a large scale uranium processing center. Core samples from several species of trees growing in different locations throughout the site were extracted using a 12.5 mm incremental wood boring drill bit. After extraction, each core sample was cut and packaged into individual sections representing 4 annual growth rings and submitted for instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The reaction 235U(n,f)140Ba→140La+γ was evaluated using high resolution germanium gamma-spectroscopy to detect the 1.596 MeV photon emission from the fission product 140La following a minimum of a 3 week decay. A total of 106 samples representing 7 individual trees of 3 unique species were irradiated. In addition to the tree-core samples, 18 quality control (QC) samples and 18 standard reference material (SRM) Fly Ash samples were irradiated with the core samples for determining neutron flux. The activity in any one sample in a batch was determined by comparison with the amount of natural uranium in the QC standards. No significantly measurable amount of uranium was detected in any of the tree core samples, although 3 tree core samples were in excess of the minimum detectable amount (30 ng).  相似文献

Certified reference material (CRM) 115, Uranium (Depleted) Metal (Uranium Assay Standard), was analyzed using a TRITON Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer to characterize the uranium isotope-amount ratios. The certified 235U/238U “major” isotope-amount ratio of 0.0020337 (12) in CRM 115 was determined using the total evaporation (TE) and the modified total evaporation (MTE) analytical techniques. In the MTE method, the total evaporation process is interrupted on a regular basis to allow correction of background from peak tailing, internal calibration of the secondary electron multiplier detector versus the Faraday cups, peak-centering, and ion source re-focusing. For the “minor” 234U/238U and 236U/238U isotope-amount ratio measurements using MTE, precision and accuracy comparable to conventional analyses are achieved, without compromising the quality of the 235U/238U isotope-amount ratios. Characterized values of the 234U/238U and 236U/238U isotope-amount ratios in CRM 115 are 0.000007545 (10) and 0.000032213 (84), respectively. The 233U/238U isotope-amount ratio in CRM 115 is estimated to be <5 × 10?9. The homogeneity of the CRM 115 materials is established through the absence of any statistically significant unit-to-unit variation in the uranium isotope-amount ratios. The measurements leading to the certification of uranium isotope-amount ratios are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of the present paper is to suggest a method for determining the235U abundance in uranium samples (compounds, metallic alloys or other uranium materials, where this element may be natural or not) through a particular application of neutron activation analysis, based on the fission interference by molybdenum. The method lies on an a priori calibration with natural uranium, thus it does not require235U certified standards.  相似文献

A method for the simultaneous, radiochemical neutron activation analysis of uranium and thorium at trace levels in biological materials is described, based on a technique known as LICSIR, in which a double neutron irradiation is employed. In the first, long irradiation233Pa (27.0 d) is induced by neutron capture on232Th and then the sample is cooled for several weeks. A second short irradiation to induce239U (23.5 m) is followed by a rapid sequential radiochemical separation by solvent extraction of239U with TBP and233Pa with TOPO. Chemical yields of239U and233Pa were measured for each sample aliquot using added235U and231Pa tracers from the -spectra of the separated fractions. The technique was validated by quality control analyses.  相似文献

A method for the determination of uranium based on235U thermal neutron fission, has been developed and employed on samples of ashed fish tissue and seaweed. The method involves a post-irradiation ion exchange separation of iodine isotopes. The 884 keV photopeak of134I is used for measurement. Uranium detection limits in the samples concerned have been estimated to be 1·10−8g in terms of natural uranium. The precision achieved in analysing several series of 3–5 samples was 4–10 per cent. The accuracy of the method was tested by employing an independent neutron activation procedure based on239U measurement. The accuracy of both methods was checked by analysing NBS SRM 1571 ‘Orchard Leaves’.  相似文献

The method of multiple γ-ray peak ratio determination has been applied to the nondestructive neutron activation analysis of uranium in rocks and ores. The photopeaks of239Np gamma-rays produced by the activation of238U and those of the fission products of235U are a measure of the quantity of uranium in the irradiated sample, provided that the uranium is of natural isotopic composition. The ratios between the integrated areas of the different photopeaks are calculated and compared with those obtained for a uranium standard. The uranium concentration in the sample is calculated from the photopeaks whose ratios correspond, within the error limits to those of pure natural uranium. High accuracy better than ±2% has been obtained.  相似文献

The smear samples of the penetrator were analyzed for the determination of the uranium composition. The obtained relative composition (m/m) of uranium isotopes in all the smear samples is in the range of 99.76-99.78% for 238U, 0.000659-0.000696% for 234U, 0.213-0.234% for 235U, and 0.00274-0.00328% for 236U, showing characteristics of depleted uranium (DU). The uranium concentrations in Kosovo soil and water samples as well as biological samples were investigated. It was found that the uranium concentrations in the Kosovo soil samples are in the range of 11.3-2.26·105 Bq·kg-1 for 238U, 10.3-3.01·104 Bq·kg-1 for 234U, 0.60-3251 Bq·kg-1 for 235U, and £0.019-1309 Bq·kg-1 for 236U. The obtained activity ratios are in the range of 0.112-1.086 for 234U/238U, 0.0123-0.1144 for 235U/238U, and 0-0.0078 for 236U/238U, indicating the presence of DU in about 77% of the surface soil samples. At a specific site, the DU inventory in the surface soil is about 140 mg·cm-2, which is 1.68·106 times higher as the estimated mean DU dispersion rate in the region. The uranium concentrations in Kosovo lichen, mushroom, bark, etc., are in the range of 1.97-4.06·104 Bq·kg-1 for 238U, 0.48-5158 Bq·kg-1 for 234U, 0.032-617 Bq·kg-1 for 235U, and £0.019-235 Bq·kg-1 for 236U with mean activity ratios of 0.325±0.0223 for 234U/238U, of 0.0238±0.0122 for 235U/238U, and 0.0034±0.0028 for +U/238U, indicating the presence of DU in the entire sample. On the contrary, the uranium concentrations in Kosovo water samples are low, compared with the water samples collected in central Italy, indicating the presence of negligible amount of DU. The uranium isotopes in Kosovo waters do not constitute a risk of health at the present time. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A correlation has been developed for the determination of 235U/238U atom ratio in uranium samples using liquid scintillation counting (LSC). The 235U/238U atom ratio determined by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) was correlated to the ratio of (i) α-count rate and (ii) Cerenkov count rate due to 234mPa in the sample; both measured by LSC. This correlation is linear over the range of 235U/238U atom ratio encountered in the nuclear fuel samples, i.e. the low enriched uranium (LEU) samples with 235U < 20 atom%. The methodology based on this correlation will be useful for the quick determination and verification of 235U/238U atom ratios in fuel samples using cost effective technique of LSC.  相似文献

Uranium in human bone, drinking water and daily diet has been determined by neutron activation analysis using the238U(n, γ)239U reaction. An improved scheme for the separation of the239U is proposed; with this scheme, after neutron irradiation in a 100 kW TRIGA reactor, a uranium content as low as 5·10−11 g can be determined reliably, rapidly and easily. A wide range of uranium concentrations, from about 0.1 ppb up to about 10 ppb has been found in the bones of normal Japanese. Water from several Japanese city water services, and the daily diet taken in two Japanese cities, have been found to contain an average 9·10−9 g/l and 1.5 μg per person-day uranium, respectively.  相似文献
