To allow anisotropies of optical properties in a magnetic field, nitroxide radical is introduced into the ortho-position of the phenylene ring in the side chain. A new azobenzene side-chain polymer (TEMPO-PAZ) containing TEMPOradical was synthesized. The polymer has a good solubility in organic solvents. The ESR spectrum of the polymer indicatedthree absorption lines characteristic of TEMPO radical. The optical phase conjugated responses (I_4) of the polymer filmswere investigated by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM). The experimental results showed that optical phase conjugatedresponse of the TEMPO-PAZ could be easily controlled by choosing the appropriate direction of magnetic field presumablydue to the nitroxide radical in the TEMPO-PAZ molecular structure. For the polymer investigated here, the nitroxide radicalwas introduced to increase optical phase conjugated response intensity in a magnetic field, aiming originally at searching fora new photo-active organic magnetic multifunctional materials.  相似文献

Application of a new azo‐polymer as a photo‐alignment material for liquid crystals (LCs) was demonstrated. 4‐(Vinyloxyethyloxy)azobenzene (VAZO), which has thermally reactive vinyl ether groups, reacted with the ? OH groups of poly(4‐hydroxystyrene) (PHS) during the baking process. The azo‐attached polymer (PHS‐VAZO) film showed anisotropic spectra after exposure to 365‐nm linear polarized light (LPL) unlike the VAZO‐doped poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) film. The anisotropy of the film was small at high concentration of the azo‐chromophore because of thermal randomization of the polarized state. In the evaluation of photo‐alignment of the LC, the LC hybrid cell using the PHS‐VAZO film achieved high LC alignment. The azo‐attached polymer using the thermal reaction of vinyl ethers is useful for a photo‐alignment material. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An optically active polymer (PM1) containing azobenzene moieties with a chiral group (s-2-methyl-butyl) wassynthesized by homopolymerization of monomer, 4-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyloxy-4'-(s-2-methyl-1-butyl oxycarbonyl)azobenzene, using the free radical polymerization method. The polymer dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) could be easilyprocessed into high optical quality films. The optical anisotropy of the polymer films was investigated by polarizing opticalmicroscopy (POM). The experimental results showed that irradiation with a circularly polarized beam could align theorientation of the molecules in the polymer films. Moreover, the holographic phase gratings of photo-induced polymer filmswere detected by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and POM. In comparison with polymer containing no chiral group, it wasfound from the preliminary measurement of the photo-induced holographic phase gratings that PM1 containing a chiralgroup could form holographic phase gratings buried in the films.  相似文献

A new approach based on a conjugated polymer/block copolymer guest/host system for the generation of polarized photoluminescence is reported. Synthetic modification of a poly(p-phenylene-ethynylene) (PPE) conjugated polymer is used for domain-specific incorporation into a cylindrical morphology block copolymer host matrix. Subsequent ordering of the host nanostructure via roll cast processing templates uniaxial alignment of the guest PPE. The ordered films are optically anisotropic displaying both polarized absorption with a dichroic ratio of 3.0 at 440 nm and polarized emission with a polarization ratio of 7.3 at 472 nm.  相似文献

A photo-induced alignment layer for LCDs has been successfully fabricated using the polarized UV photoreaction of a photo-crosslinkable polymer with the incident UV light at some angle with respect to the cell normal. The surface alignment and electro-optic properties were investigated for various UV exposure times. The homeotropic alignment layer showed a discrete anisotropic dichroic ratio, its surface morphology became smoother as the UV exposure time increased, and the LCs were arranged in a perpendicular direction to the PUVL direction with a proper pretilt angle. The cell showed no defects under cross-polarized microscopy and the contrast ratio was as high as 550:1 in transmittance. The contrast ratio pattern was found to be very similar to that of dichroic ratio as a function of UV exposure time and depended upon the frequency change to some degree. The response time was also investigated.  相似文献

Photoinduced alignment in a polymer liquid crystal prepared from 6-{1-[4-(2-cyano-4-nitrophenylazo)phenyl]piperazino}hexyl acrylate and 4'-[6-(methacryloyloxy)hexyloxy]-4-cyanobiphenyl was investigated for the first time on irradiation with a polarized He-Ne laser beam at 633 nm. The azobenzene moieties as well as the inert cyanobiphenyl mesogenic units were aligned with the molecular long axis perpendicular to the polarization direction of the irradiation light. Alignment induced on short irradiation was reversible, while that induced under prolonged irradiation was irreversible due to the occurrence of crosslinking which might be caused by photoinduced decomposition of the azobenzene moieties during the photoirradiation process.  相似文献

Polyaddition of 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT) to 1,4-divinylbenzene (DVB) was carried out with 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile initiator in toluene at 75°C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The polymerization proceeded without an induction period, to give a white polymer with a high molecular weight (M?w = 110,000) in ca. 90% yield for 2 hr. It was confirmed by 1H-NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), IR (infrared) and sulfur contents that the polymer had an alternating structure of DVB and BDT units. The end-capping reaction of the polymer was also achieved by addition of thiophenol and/or styrene to the polymerization solution at a final stage of the polymerization. The polymer film exhibited a reversible phase transition between a transparent state and an opaque one by thermal mode. The thermal property of the polymer was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and polarized optical microscope observation with the polymer film. The detailed DSC analysis showed that the end-capped polymer with a relatively low molecular weight (M?W = 4400–9600) exhibited similar to liquid crystalline behavior. A diffuse reflectance spectrum of the polymer coated on an aluminum plate showed a marked difference in reflective light intensity in the ultraviolet and visible regions: the reversible phase transition between an opaque and a transparent polymer layers was induced by thermal mode. The light transmittance of the polymer film, which was measured by depolarized light intensity method, was very sensitive toward the temperature variation.  相似文献

High-resolution X-ray diffraction and polarized neutron diffraction experiments have been performed on the Y-semiquinonate complex, Y(HBPz3)2(DTBSQ), in order to determine the charge and spin densities in the paramagnetic ground state, S = (1/2). The aim of these combined studies is to bring new insights to the antiferromagnetic coupling mechanism between the semiquinonate radical and the rare earth ion in the isomorphous Gd(HBPz3)2(DTBSQ) complex. The experimental charge density at 106 K yields detailed information about the bonding between the Y3+ ion and the semiquinonate ligand; the topological charge of the yttrium atom indicates a transfer of about 1.5 electrons from the radical toward the Y3+ ion in the complex, in agreement with DFT calculations. The electron density deformation map reveals well-resolved oxygen lone pairs with one lobe polarized toward the yttrium atom. The determination of the induced spin density at 1.9 K under an applied magnetic field of 9.5 T permits the visualization of the delocalized magnetic orbital of the radical throughout the entire molecule. The spin is mainly distributed on the oxygen atoms [O1 (0.12(1) mu B), O2(0.11(1) mu B)] and the carbon atoms [C21 (0.24(1) mu B), C22(0.20(1) mu B), C24(0.16(1) mu B), C25(0.12(1) mu B)] of the carbonyl ring. A significant spin delocalization on the yttrium site of 0.08(2) mu B is observed, proving that a direct overlap with the radical magnetic orbital can occur at the rare earth site and lead to antiferromagnetic coupling. The DFT calculations are in good quantitative agreement with the experimental charge density results, but they underestimate the spin delocalization of the oxygen toward the yttrium and the carbon atoms of the carbonyl ring.  相似文献

Confocal Raman spectroscopy has been implemented within the molecularly thin films of a surface forces apparatus. Applying this technique to an initial system, we investigate the confinement and shear-induced changes in the Raman spectra of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) liquids confined between atomically smooth mica surfaces at thicknesses less than the unperturbed radius of gyration of the polymer. We focus on stretch vibrations of the PDMS methyl group, whose net orientation is perpendicular to the chain backbone. When PDMS was confined to a thickness of approximately the unperturbed radius of gyration (3.5 nm) but no shear, the Raman intensity of the methyl group was anisotropic in the x-y plane, signifying that chains oriented preferentially parallel to the confining surfaces. Relative to the bulk fluid, the relative intensity of the asymmetric to symmetric carbon-hydrogen stretch (2965 and 2907 cm-1, respectively) was enhanced, indicating that asymmetric vibration was enhanced by confinement. Measurements using polarized radiation showed coherent planar anisotropy in the x-y plane whose direction varied stochastically from experiment to experiment. It seems that although coherent in-plane alignment was favored, no preferential alignment direction was favored in the absence of shear. Application of shear caused the time-averaged polymer conformations to become more nearly isotropic in the plane of shear. These measurements are considered to represent the first chemical imaging of chemical species within the contact area of a surface forces apparatus.  相似文献

A new kind of aligning material for liquid crystal cells, ladder-like polysilsesquioxanes (LPS) grafted with cinnamoyl side groups, has been developed to improve the thermal stability of the photoalignment layer. The LC aligning ability of the LPS-based alignment layers, fabricated by linearly polarized UV-induced polymerization (LPP), was characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, conoscopic observations and electro-optic response measurements. In particular, a practical and severe annealing test was adopted to examine the thermal stability of the alignment layer; this showed that even when LC cells were annealed at 100 C (much higher than the clearing point of the LC) for several hours, good LC orientation could remain when the cell was cooled to a constant measurement temperature. The results confirmed that the photoalignment layers exhibited not only good LC aligning ability, but also excellent thermal stability, so heralding their potential application in LCDs.  相似文献

The alignment and optical properties of ferroelectric liquid crystal cells, having alignment films of a chalcone-based side chain polymer treated by linearly polarized UV irradiation were investigated. The long absorption band of the UV/Vis spectra gradually decreased and the FTIR spectra shifted as the irradiation times increased, indicating that cyclo-addition and isomerization reactions of the chalcone-based side chains occurred. UV dichroism demonstrated anisotropic changes in the alignment films, with a maximum at low exposure energy (0.5 J cm-2). Liquid crystal molecules were aligned perpendicular to the polarization direction of the linearly polarized UV radiation. The azimuthal anchoring energy of liquid crystal E7 on a chalcone-based side chain polymer surface increased with exposure energy. Well aligned defect-free cells and high contrast ratio were achieved with irradiation of longer than 5 min; the geometric conditions for a stable C2 structure may be satisfied at low temperature with slowly cooling.  相似文献

We have studied multielectron ionization and Coulomb explosion of C2H4 irradiated by 110 fs, 800 nm laser pulses at an intensity of approximately 10(15) W/cm2. Strong anisotropic angular distributions were observed for the atomic ions Cn+(n = 1-3). Based on the results of two crossed linearly polarized laser pulses, we conclude that such anisotropic angular distributions result from dynamic alignment, in which the rising edge of the laser pulses aligns the neutral C2H4 molecules along the laser polarization direction. The angular distribution of the exploding fragments, therefore, reflects the degree of the alignment of molecules before ionization. Using the same femtosecond laser with intensity below the ionization threshold, the alignment of C2H4 molecules was also observed.  相似文献

A novel amphotropic polymer which could exhibit liquid-crystalline behavior both in the solvent and in the heating process was synthesized through azo polymers grafting from cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The CNCs, prepared by acid hydrolysis of filter paper, were characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Poly{6-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy] hexyl methacrylate}(PMMAZO), which was a liquid-crystalline polymers (LCP), was successfully to graft from CNC via Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure and thermal properties of the PMMAZO-grafted CNC were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). Its phase structures and transitions were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The experimental results showed that the PMMAZO-grafted CNC exhibited both types of liquid crystal formation, thermotropic and lyotropic.  相似文献

利用后重氮偶合反应,将4-(三氟甲基)苯胺的重氮盐与两种具有高苯胺残基密度的环氧树脂类前体聚合物在极性有机溶剂中反应,制备了两种具有高生色团密度的环氧树脂类偶氮聚合物PEP-AZ-CF3和PEP-35AZ-CF3.利用1H-NMR、FTIR、UV-Vis和DSC等分析方法对2种偶氮聚合物结构、热性能及吸收光谱性能进行了分析及表征.研究了在不同波长的激光(488、532及589 nm)照射下,2种偶氮聚合物薄膜光致表面自结构的形成.研究结果表明,入射激光的波长对偶氮聚合物表面自结构现象的形成有明显影响.仅在波长488 nm的偏振激光(线偏振光或圆偏振光)照射下,2种偶氮聚合物薄膜表面能观察到自结构现象.圆偏光比线偏光更有利于诱导表面起伏结构的形成,但形成的表面结构不具备长程取向有序性.聚合物生色团中偶氮键邻位的取代甲基对表面自结构的形成起到阻碍作用.  相似文献

Optically transparent thick films of methacrylate copolymer containing donor-acceptor-type azobenzene and cyanobiphenyl moieties were prepared, and their optical properties were explored in terms of a photoinduced change in molecular alignment and the formation of Bragg gratings with angular and polarization multiplicity. Azobenzene moieties substituted with ethoxy, cyano, and nitro groups were employed, and their photoresponsive behavior was investigated. It was found by polarized UV-vis spectroscopy that the alignment of azobenzene moieties in the films was random in the initial state but became perpendicular to the direction of polarization of the writing beam after irradiation with a linearly polarized beam from an Ar+ laser at 514 nm. The film containing the cyanoazobenzene moieties showed the fastest formation of optical anisotropy due to an efficient change in molecular alignment. When two linearly polarized beams from the Ar+ laser were allowed to interfere in the films with a thickness of 200 microm, the diffraction beam was observed immediately and reached 97% upon photoirradiation at 200 mW/cm2 for 5 min. It was clearly observed that the response time became shorter with an increase in the light intensity of the writing beams, maintaining the high diffraction efficiency. Furthermore, it was clearly seen that the diffraction efficiency strongly depended on the direction of polarization of the reading beam. Holographic multiple data storage in a film was demonstrated, and 55 holograms with angular multiplicity were recorded successfully. In addition, multiple data storage using the polarization and angle selectivity simultaneously was first demonstrated.  相似文献

Two photosensitive chiral liquid crystalline azobenzene‐containing polymethacrylates having different length of flexible spacer connecting chromophores with backbone were synthesized and their phase behavior and photo‐optical properties were studied. Both polymers consist of lateral methyl substituents in ortho‐position of azobenzene chromophores providing high photosensitivity even in red spectral region as well as high thermal stability of photoinduced Z‐form of azobenzene chromophores. It is shown, that smectic phase (SmA*) formation in films of polymer with longer spacer predetermines its quite unusual spectral response to UV and subsequent visible light actions. The SmA* phase promotes spontaneous homeotropic alignment of azobenzene chromophores in polymer films. UV‐irradiation induces not only E‐Z isomerization but also results in disruption of homeotropic alignment, whereas subsequent visible light action enables to obtain films with the low degree of chromophores orientation. The photo‐orientation phenomena under the action of polarized light of different wavelength on polymer films were studied. A new persistent organic free radical has been synthetized with Br atoms occupying the ortho- and para-positions of a trityl core. After the isolation of its two propeller-like atropisomers, Plus (P) and minus (M), their absolute configurations were assigned by a combination of theoretical and experimental data. Remarkably, no hints of racemization were observed up to 60 °C for more than two hours, due to the higher steric hindrance imposed by the bulky Br atoms. Therefore, when compared to its chlorinated homologue (t1/2=18 s at 60 °C), an outstanding stability against racemization was achieved. A circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) response of both enantiomers was detected. This free radical shows a satisfactory luminescent dissymmetry factor (|glum(592 nm)|≈0.7×10−3) despite its pure organic nature and low luminescence quantum yield (LQY). Improved organic magnetic CPL emitters derived from the reported structure can be envisaged thanks to the wide possibilities that Br atoms at para-positions offer for further functionalization.  相似文献
