A series of chiral triplet liquid crystalline compounds with a central biphenyl group to which two dihydrocholesteryl groups are attached via two flexible alkanoate spacers has been prepared and investigated. As a function of spacer length, these compounds show strong odd-even effects for the phase transition temperatures, the corresponding entropy changes and the selective reflection wavelengths associated with the chiral nematic phases. Asymmetrical compounds with one odd and one even number of methylene groups in their spacers have properties intermediate between those of symmetrical compounds with two odd or two even spacers.  相似文献

For the first five members of the homologous series of 4-n-alkyl-4'-cyanobiphenyls in the nematic and isotropic phases, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed by using a united atom model. An odd-even effect was seen to be found in the molecular length, width, biaxiality, and inertia tensor anisotropy with the length of alkyl chain. The distributions of the molecular length, width, and inertia tensor anisotropy were presented. The orientational distributions of the last C--C bonds in the alkyl chain were also evaluated for nematic and isotropic phases.  相似文献

Nine different poly-n-alkylterphthalamides have been synthesized, and their properties as alignment layers for chiral smectic C liquid crystals have been determined. Poly-n-hexylterphthalamide is found to be particularly well suited for one of the room temperature mixtures used in this study. The contrast between relaxed states shows an odd-even effect that can probably be explained by the crystal form of the different polymers. The tilt angle found between the relaxed states depends only on the polymer used, not on the inherent tilt of the chiral smectic C phases.  相似文献

A homologous series of U-shaped dimeric liquid crystals in which two mesogenic groups are connected via catechol has been prepared and the effects of terminal alkyl chains, alkyl spacers and core structures on the transition properties investigated by means of optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The phase sequence exhibits a pronounced odd-even effect as the length and parity of the spacers is varied, in which the even members favour the nematic and smectic C phases, whereas the odd members favour the nematic and smectic A phases. We discuss the transition behaviour of the U-shaped compounds in terms of molecular shape.  相似文献

The synthesis of 14 novel low molar mass liquid crystalline twin molecules is described and experimental details are given. The twin monomers contain two mesogenic units which are connected by a flexible spacer. Two terminal acrylate groups make these twins suitable for photopolymerization. The insertion of lateral groups into the mesogen leads to glassforming properties. We tested several substituents (-OCH3, -CH3) in different positions of the mesogenic unit and investigated their thermotropic properties as well as their crystallization behaviour by polarizing microscopy and DSC experiments. Some of the novel twin molecules with lateral substituents in the mesogenic core have unusually broad mesophases of about 150oC. Below T g stable LC glasses are formed. At room temperature a slow, kinetically hindered crystallization starts after about three hours. The broad mesophases of the twin molecules allow investigations of the photopolymerization kinetics over a wide temperature range. The addition of chiral non-liquid crystalline comonomers and subsequent photopolymerization leads to cholesteric networks with interesting optical properties. Last but not least, the twins are suitable mixing agents which suppress the crystallization of classical mono-rods.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral twin liquid crystals possessing identical chiral moieties at both peripheral ends, i.e. optically active α,ω -bis{4-[(4′-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-4-biphenylyl)oxycarbony]phenoxy}alkanes, has been prepared and their liquid crystalline properties investigated. The homologues preferred to show the ferrielectric and/or antiferroelectric phase rather than the ferroelectric phase. With ascending central spacer length, the temperature range of the ferrielectric phase became narrow and eventually disappeared for the dodecyl homologue, suggesting that the coupling in motion and/or direction between two mesogenic parts of each twin molecule has an important effect on the stabilization of the ferrielectric phase. The octyl and dodecyl homologues showed a wide temperature range chiral nematic phase (ca. 10°C or more), so that these compounds were found to be the first examples showing antiferroelectric and/or ferrielectric phases with a broad temperature range of the chiral nematic phase. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the homologues tend to form a mono-layered structure. The formation of a relatively well defined layered structure was also indicated, which is considered to be important for generating anticlinic ordering in the antiferroelectric and ferrielectric phases. An isotropic-isotropic transition characterized by the emergence of a broad diffuse DSC peak was observed for the even-membered homologues.  相似文献

A power law behaviour of dielectric loss versus frequency has been found in members of the 4,4'-di-n-alkyloxyazoxybenzene series. For each member the scaling of the data with respect to v/vmax is possible in the liquid-crystalline temperature range; this suggests a fractal-like geometry in nematic and smectic phases. The values of the scaling exponents, indicating a cooperativity of molecular reorientation around the short axes, exhibit an odd-even effect.  相似文献

Binary mixtures of chiral and non-chiral smectogens, DOBAMBC and DBHP respectively, exhibit a chiral smectic C phase in two separated concentration regions (about 0-20 and 60-100 mol per cent of DOBAMBC) and a chiral smectic I phase in the region of 60-100 mol per cent of DOBAMBC. For the S*cphase, the temperature and the concentration dependences of the spontaneous polarization, the tilt angle and the helical pitch were determined. The electric field switching properties of the S*iphase have been studied. For higher concentrations, the switching is similar to that of the S*iphase of pure DOBAMBC. When the concentration of DOBAMBC is lowered, bistable switching is observed.  相似文献

Some fluorinated chiral liquid crystals were synthesized and the compounds characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 19F NMR and mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their phase transition behaviour was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. Nearly all of the compounds synthesized are liquid crystals with an enantiotropic cholesteric phase. Some of them exhibit a blue phase. Lateral tetrafluoro substitution decreases the clearing point and molecular polarity affects the formation of liquid crystalline phases.  相似文献

Novel liquid crystal materials based on 1-alkyl-4-[5-(dodecylsulphanyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]pyridinium and bearing bromide, alkyl sulphate or bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulphosuccinate counterions were prepared. Their thermotropic and thermochromic properties were characterized and compared. It was established that the majority of these compounds exhibited SmA mesophases. The observation of thermochromic properties for certain of the compounds is considered to be the consequence of the existence of a charge-transfer complex between the pyridinium cation and its counterion.  相似文献

New series of liquid crystals with a chiral chain containing two asymmetric carbon atoms in two lactate groups have been synthesized. Some compounds have a third asymmetric centre in an (S)-2-methylbutyl alkyl chain. All the new compounds have SmA, SmC* and hexatic phases. Two of the homologues with three chiral centres also exhibit very wide SmCA phases and one of them a re-entrant SmC* phase. The phases are characterized by DSC, dielectric, and X-ray studies. Spontaneous polarization and tilt angle are determined for the polar phases.  相似文献

We consider the effects of polydispersity on isotropic-nematic phase equilibria in thermotropic liquid crystals, using a Maier-Saupe theory [Z. Naturforsch. A 13A, 564 (1958)] with factorized interactions. A sufficient spread (approximately 50%) in the interaction strengths of the particles leads to phase separation into two or more nematic phases, which can in addition coexist with an isotropic phase. The isotropic-nematic coexistence region widens dramatically as polydispersity is increased, leading to reentrant isotropic-nematic phase separation in some regions of the phase diagram. We show that similar phenomena will occur also for nonfactorized interactions as long as the interaction strength between any two particle species is lower than the mean of the intraspecies interactions.  相似文献

Chiral twin compounds possessing an alkylsulphanyl spacer showed an antiferroelectric phase exclusively. However, replacing the alkyloxy chain of the analogous monomer by the alkylsulphanyl chain has no significant effect on the phase transition behaviour, i.e. both of the monomers showed the ferro- and ferri-electric phases as well as the antiferroelectric phase. Thus, different effects of introducing the thioether linkage were for the first time observed between twin and monomeric systems. The introduction of oxygen or sulphur atoms into the central alkyl spacer of the chiral twin was also investigated, and these modifications were found to stabilize the SmA phase. We have performed dielectric measurements on chiral liquid crystalline systems. From the values of the static dielectric permittivity, it is observed that the dielectric pretransitional effect in the isotropic phase on approaching the isotropic to cholesteric or isotropic to blue phase transition is virtually not influenced by the chirality of the system. The relaxation times do not show anomalous behaviour near the transition, although a small overall slowing down is observed in mixtures with increasing chirality.  相似文献

It has been widely recognized that the combination of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and low molar mass thermotropic liquid crystals (tLCs) not only provides a useful way to align CNTs, but also dramatically enhances the tLC performance especially in the liquid crystal display technology. Such CNT-tLC nanocomposites have ignited hopes to address many stubborn problems within the field, such as low contrast, slow response, and narrow view angle. However, this material development has been limited by the poor solubility of CNTs in tLCs. Here, we describe an effective strategy to solve the problem. Prior to integrating with tLCs, pristine CNTs are physically "coated" by a liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) which is compatible with tLCs. The homogeneous CNT-tLC composite obtained in this way is stable for over 6 months, and the concentration of CNTs in tLCs can reach 1 wt %. We further demonstrate the alignment of CNTs at high CNT concentrations by an electric field with a theory to model the impedance response of the CNT-tLC mixture.  相似文献

Second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies d eff were determined for Pt-containing ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs). A relatively simple method is presented which allows for the simultaneous determination of the second order susceptibility tensor coefficients d ij together with the dispersion and birefringence at the fundamental frequency. The relation between the d ij coefficients is qualitatively interpreted in terms of the molecular shape and of a scheme proposed for the molecular orientation in the ferroelectric phase. Contrary to the usual situation with calamitics, d 23 is much higher than the rest of the coefficients. This peculiarity, which reflects the 3D character of the molecular response, is interesting since d 23 is directly involved in d eff for phase matched SHG.  相似文献
