We have measured fragmentation cross sections of protonated water cluster cations (H(2)O)(n=30-50)H(+) by collision with water molecules. The clusters have well-defined sizes and internal energies. The collision energy has been varied from 0.5 to 300 eV. We also performed the same measurements on deuterated water clusters (D(2)O)(n=5-45)D(+) colliding with deuterated water molecules. The main fragmentation channel is shown to be a sequential thermal evaporation of single molecules following an initial transfer of relative kinetic energy into internal energy of the cluster. Unexpectedly, that initial transfer is very low on average, of the order of 1% of collision energy. We evaluate that for direct collisions (i.e., within the hard sphere radius), the probability for observing no fragmentation at all is more than 35%, independently of cluster size and collision energy, over our range of study. Such an effect is well known at higher energies, where it is attributed to electronic effects, but has been reported only in a theoretical study of the collision of helium atoms with sodium clusters in that energy range, where only vibrational excitation occurs.  相似文献

The unimolecular dissociation dynamics of aluminum clusters following collision with either a rare gas atom or a surface is investigated by classical trajectory simulations with model potentials. Two conformers of Al(6) with very distinct shapes, i.e., the spherical O(h) and planar C(2)(h) clusters, are considered in this work. The initial vibrational energy and angular momentum distributions resulting from collision, as well as the energy and angular momentum resolved lifetime distributions, of excited clusters were determined for both collision-induced dissociation (CID) and surface-induced dissociation (SID) processes. The partitioning of excitation energy acquired upon collision was found to depend on the excitation mechanism (CID or SID), as well as on the cluster molecular shape, especially in the case of CID. For both types of processes, the energy and angular momentum resolved excited cluster lifetime distributions were found to decay exponentially, in agreement with statistical theories of chemical reactions, suggesting intrinsic Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) behavior. Moreover, the simulated microcanonical rate constants determined from the cluster lifetime distributions are in good agreement with the predictions of the orbiting transition state model of phase space theory (OTS/PST), which further supports the statistical character of cluster CID and SID. Thus, in the CID and SID of highly fluxional systems such as aluminum clusters, the rate of intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) is much faster than the dissociation rate, which validates one of the key assumptions, i.e., post-collision statistical behavior, underlying the models that are routinely used to determine cluster binding energies from experimental CID/SID cross sections.  相似文献

An incorporation of ND(3) into protonated ammonia cluster ions NH(4)(+)(NH(3))(n-1) (n=3-9), together with a dissociation of the cluster ions, was observed in the collision of the cluster with ND(3) at collision energies ranging from 0.04 to 1.4 eV in the center-of-mass frame. The branching fractions of the cluster ion species produced in the reactions were obtained as a function of the collision energy. The branching fractions of the incorporation products were successfully explained in terms of the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel (RRK) theory at collision energies lower than the binding energy of the cluster ion. In addition, the internal energy distributions of the parent cluster ions were determined, and found to be in good agreement with those predicted using the evaporative ensemble model. In incorporations at collision energies lower than the binding energy of the cluster ion, all of the collision energy was transferred to the internal energy of the cluster ions; subsequently, an evaporation of ammonia molecules occurred in an equilibrium process after a complete energy redistribution in the clusters. In contrast, at collision energies higher than the binding energy of the cluster ion, a release of an ammonia molecule from the incorporation products occurred in a nonequilibrium process. The transition from the complex mode to the direct mode in the incorporation was observed at collision energies approximately equal to the binding energy. On the other hand, the collision energy dependence of the cross sections for the dissociation and for a nonreactive collision were estimated by a RRK simulation in which the collision energy transfer was interpreted by using the classical hard-sphere collision model. A relationship between reactivity and reaction modes in the collision of NH(4)(+)(NH(3))(4) with ND(3) is discussed via a comparison of the experimental results with the RRK simulation.  相似文献

Chemisorption of a methanol molecule onto a size-selected copper cluster ion, Cu(n)+ (n = 2-10), and subsequent reactions were investigated in a gas-beam geometry at a collision energy less than 2 eV in an apparatus based on a tandem-type mass spectrometer. Mass spectra of the product ions show that the following two reactions occur after chemisorption: dominant formation of Cu(n-1)+(H)(OH) (H(OH) formation) in the size range of 4-5 and that of Cu(n)O+ (demethanation) in the size range of 6-8 in addition to only chemisorption in the size range larger than 9. Absolute cross sections for the chemisorption, the H(OH) formation, and the demethanation processes were measured as functions of cluster size and collision energy. Optimized structures of bare copper cluster ions, reaction intermediates, and products were calculated by use of a hybrid method (B3LYP) consisting of the molecular orbital and the density functional methods. The origin of the size-dependent reactivity was explained as the structural change of cluster, two-dimensional to three-dimensional structures.  相似文献

Low-energy dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to the CF(2)Cl(2) and CF(3)Cl molecules in a water cluster environment is investigated theoretically. Calculations are performed for the water trimer and water hexamer. It is shown that the DEA cross section is strongly enhanced when the attaching molecule is embedded in a water cluster, and that this cross section grows as the number of water molecules in the cluster increases. This growth is explained by a trapping effect that is due to multiple scattering by water molecules while the electron is trapped in the cluster environment. The trapping increases the resonance lifetime and the negative ion survival probability. This confirms qualitatively existing experiments on electron attachment to the CF(2)Cl(2) molecule placed on the surface of H(2)O ice. The DEA cross sections are shown to be very sensitive to the position of the attaching molecule within the cluster and the orientation of the electron beam relative to the cluster.  相似文献

The production of stable cluster arrays on smooth surfaces has several potential technological applications. We report a study of the pinning of size-selected palladium nanoclusters on the graphite surface. The clusters formed during gas aggregation in vacuum are projected with sufficient kinetic energy to create a defect in the graphite surface. The energy necessary to create such an immobilizing defect is investigated as a function of the palladium cluster size. The palladium pinning energy is found to deviate from the simple binary collision model as appropriate to previously reported silver and gold results. This finding is in agreement with the deviation of nickel clusters and points to the influence of the interatomic cluster bonding on the mechanics of the collision.  相似文献

Monomer-cluster collisions of Lennard-Jones argon atoms have been studied using molecular dynamics simulation for target cluster sizes of 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, and 20 atoms. Capture probability of monomers by clusters and the lifetimes of the resulting clusters have been calculated as a function of impact parameter and the total energy of the target cluster. Cluster lifetime is further integrated over all impact parameters to obtain the average lifetime for each cluster size and energy. The average lifetime of the smallest aggregates is shown to be short compared to the collision time between monomers and clusters unless the vapor is highly supersaturated. The formation probability of a new cluster decreases steeply if a minimum lifetime is required for the cluster.  相似文献

Absolute cross sections for NO chemisorption, NO decomposition, and cluster dissociation in the collision of a nitrogen monoxide molecule, NO, with cluster ions Con+ and ConH+ (n=2-5) were measured as a function of the cluster size, n, in a beam-gas geometry in a tandem mass spectrometer. Size dependency of the cross sections and the change of the cross sections by introduction of H to Con+ (effect of H-introduction) are explained by a statistical model based on the RRK theory, with the aid of the energetics obtained by a DFT calculation. It was found that the reactions are governed by the energetics rather than dynamics. For instance, Co3+ does not react appreciably with NO because the reactions are endothermic, while Co3H+ does because the reaction becomes exothermic by the H-introduction.  相似文献

The collisional velocity dependence of the cross sections for fragmentation of mass-selected (CO2) n + (n+2...7) clusters in collisions with Ar atoms is presented. Interesting structure can be observed in the cross sections which indicate that the collision occurs between the Ar atom and one CO2 molecule within the cluster. The results may be explained by assuming that the collision leads to either vibrational excitation of a loosely bound CO2 monomer which then leaves the cluster or excitation of the entire cluster to a dissociative state.  相似文献

Reactions of size-selected copper cluster cations and anions, Cu(n)(±), with O(2) and CO have been systematically investigated under single collision conditions by using a tandem-mass spectrometer. In the reactions of Cu(n)(±) (n = 3-25) with O(2), oxidation of the cluster is prominently observed with and without releasing Cu atoms at the collision energy of 0.2 eV. The reactivity of Cu(n)(+) is governed to some extent by the electronic shell structure; the relatively small reaction cross sections observed at n = 9 and 21 correspond to the electronic shell closings, and those at odd sizes in n ≤ 16 match with the clusters having no unpaired electron. On the other hand, the reactivity of Cu(n)(-) exhibits no remarkable decrease by the electronic shell closings and the even-numbered electrons. These behaviors may be due to an influence of the electron detachment of the reaction intermediate, Cu(n)O(2)(-). Both the cations and anions show the dominant formation of Cu(n-1)O(2)(±) in n ≤ 16 and Cu(n)O(2)(±) in n ≥ 17 in the experimental time window. By contrast, Cu(n)(-) (n = 3-11) do not react with CO at the collision energy of 0.2 eV, while Cu(n)(+) (n = 3-19) adsorb CO though the cross sections are relatively small. The difference in the reactivity between the charge states can be understood in terms of the frontier orbitals of the Cu cluster and O(2) or CO.  相似文献

We present approximate pseudopotential quantum-mechanical calculations of the excess electron states of equilibrated neutral water clusters sampled by classical molecular dynamics simulations. The internal energy of the clusters are representative of those present at temperatures of 200 and 300 K. Correlated electronic structure calculations are used to validate the pseudopotential for this purpose. We find that the neutral clusters support localized, bound excess electron ground states in about 50% of the configurations for the smallest cluster size studied (n = 20), and in almost all configurations for larger clusters (n > 66). The state is always exterior to the molecular frame, forming typically a diffuse surface state. Both cluster size and temperature dependence of energetic and structural properties of the clusters and the electron distribution are explored. We show that the stabilization of the electron is strongly correlated with the preexisting instantaneous dipole moment of the neutral clusters, and its ground state energy is reflected in the electronic radius. The findings are consistent with electron attachment via an initial surface state. The hypothetical spectral dynamics following such attachment is also discussed.  相似文献

We report vibrational predissociation spectra of water cluster anions, (H(2)O)(n=)()(3)(-)(24)(-) in the HOH bending region to explore whether the characteristic red-shifted feature associated with electron binding onto a double H-bond acceptor (AA) water molecule survives into the intermediate cluster size regime. The spectra of the "tagged" (H(2)O)(n)()(-).Ar clusters indeed exhibit the signature AA band, but assignment of this motif to a particular isomer is complicated by the fact that argon attachment produces significant population of three isomeric forms (as evidenced by their photoelectron spectra). We therefore also investigated the bare clusters since they can be prepared exclusively in the high binding (isomer class I) form. Because the energy required to dissociate a water molecule from the bare complexes is much larger than the transition energies in the bending region, the resulting (linear) action spectroscopy selectively explores the properties of clusters with most internal energy content. The (H(2)O)(15)(-) predissociation spectrum obtained under these conditions displays a more intense AA feature than was found in the spectra of the Ar tagged species. This observation implies that not only is the AA motif present in the class I isomer, but also that it persists when the clusters contain considerable internal energy.  相似文献

Collisional charge exchange between mass selected alkali cluster ions and Cs has been studied and cross sections have been determined for the processes Na n + + Cs and K n + + Cs, withn=1–21 andn=1–14, respectively. A strong dependence of the cross sections on the energy defect as well as on cluster size and collision energy is found. The results are analysed by a coupled two state density matrix model, taking account of the relaxation of electronic amplitudes due to interaction with the nuclear motion in the cluster.  相似文献

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study that directly tests the quality of the potential energy surfaces used to calculate energy changing cross sections of water in collision with helium and molecular hydrogen, at conditions relevant for astrophysics. Fully state-to-state differential cross sections are measured for H(2)O-He and H(2)O-H(2) collisions at 429 and 575?cm(-1) collision energy, respectively. We compare these differential cross sections with theoretical ones for H(2)O+H(2) derived from state-of-the-art potential energy surfaces [P. Valiron et al., J. Chem. Phys. 129, 134306 (2008)] and quantum scattering calculations. This detailed comparison forms a stringent test of the validity of astrophysics calculations for energy changing rates in water. The agreement between theory and experiment is striking for most of the state-to-state differential cross sections measured.  相似文献

Electron emission efficiency induced by the collision of clusters with a solid surface was measured as a function of cluster size. Emitted electron energy distribution for the impact of mass selected negative ion clusters or mass selected neutral clusters was also measured in the energy region of 0–5 eV. The difference in the shape of the electron spectra was observed depending on the size and charge of the clusters.  相似文献

Here we report ion mobility experiments and theoretical studies aimed at elucidating the identity of the acetylene dimer cation and its hydrated structures. The mobility measurement indicates the presence of more than one isomer for the C(4)H(4)(●+) ion in the cluster beam. The measured average collision cross section of the C(4)H(4)(●+) isomers in helium (38.9 ± 1 A?(2)) is consistent with the calculated cross sections of the four most stable covalent structures calculated for the C(4)H(4)(●+) ion [methylenecyclopropene (39.9 A?(2)), 1,2,3-butatriene (41.1 A?(2)), cyclobutadiene (38.6 A?(2)), and vinyl acetylene (41.1 A?(2))]. However, none of the single isomers is able to reproduce the experimental arrival time distribution of the C(4)H(4)(●+) ion. Combinations of cyclobutadiene and vinyl acetylene isomers show excellent agreement with the experimental mobility profile and the measured collision cross section. The fragment ions obtained by the dissociation of the C(4)H(4)(●+) ion are consistent with the cyclobutadiene structure in agreement with the vibrational predissociation spectrum of the acetylene dimer cation (C(2)H(2))(2)(●+) [R. A. Relph, J. C. Bopp, J. R. Roscioli, and M. A. Johnson, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 114305 (2009)]. The stepwise hydration experiments show that dissociative proton transfer reactions occur within the C(4)H(4)(●+)(H(2)O)(n) clusters with n ≥ 3 resulting in the formation of protonated water clusters. The measured binding energy of the C(4)H(4)(●+)H(2)O cluster, 38.7 ± 4 kJ/mol, is in excellent agreement with the G3(MP2) calculated binding energy of cyclobutadiene(●+)·H(2)O cluster (41 kJ/mol). The binding energies of the C(4)H(4)(●+)(H(2)O)(n) clusters change little from n = 1 to 5 (39-48 kJ/mol) suggesting the presence of multiple binding sites with comparable energies for the water-C(4)H(4)(●+) and water-water interactions. A significant entropy loss is measured for the addition of the fifth water molecule suggesting a structure with restrained water molecules, probably a cyclic water pentamer within the C(4)H(4)(●+)(H(2)O)(5) cluster. Consequently, a drop in the binding energy of the sixth water molecule is observed suggesting a structure in which the sixth water molecule interacts weakly with the C(4)H(4)(●+)(H(2)O)(5) cluster presumably consisting of a cyclobutadiene(●+) cation hydrogen bonded to a cyclic water pentamer. The combination of ion mobility, dissociation, and hydration experiments in conjunction with the theoretical calculations provides strong evidence that the (C(2)H(2))(2)(●+) ions are predominantly present as the cyclobutadiene cation with some contribution from the vinyl acetylene cation.  相似文献

Van der Waals clusters of various molecules were collisionally ionized by high-Rydberg rare gas atoms and slow electrons. Negative cluster ions thus produced were detected by mass spectroscopy. The ionization mechanism were investigated by measurements of the size- and the energy-dependences of the electron attachment cross sections.  相似文献

Pickup of several molecules, H(2)O, HBr, and CH(3)OH, and Ar atoms on free Ar(N) clusters has been investigated in a molecular beam experiment. The pickup cross sections of the clusters with known mean sizes, ?≈ 150 and 260 were measured by two independent methods: (i) the cluster beam velocity decrease due to the momentum transfer of the picked up molecules to the clusters, and (ii) Poisson distribution of a selected cluster fragment ion as a function of the pickup pressure. In addition, the pickup cross sections were calculated using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations support the results of the velocity measurements. On the other hand, the Poisson distributions yield significantly smaller cross sections, inconsistent with the known Ar(N) cluster sizes. These results are discussed in terms of: (i) an incomplete coagulation of guest molecules on the argon clusters when two or more molecules are picked up; and (ii) the fragmentation pattern of the embedded molecules and their clusters upon ionization on the Ar cluster. We conclude that the Poisson distribution method has to be cautiously examined, if conclusions should be drawn about the cluster cross section, or the mean cluster size ?, and the number of picked up molecules.  相似文献

A reflecting time of flight mass spectrometer (RETOF) is used to study unimolecular and collision induced fragmentation of ammonia cluster ions. Synchrotron radiation from the BESSY electron storage ring is used in a range of photon energies from 9.08 up to 17.7 eV for single photon ionisation of neutral clusters in a supersonic beam. The threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence technique (TPEPICO) is used to define the energy initially deposited into the cluster ions. Metastable unimolecular decay (µs range) is studied using the RETOF's capacity for energy analysis. Under collision free conditions the by far most prominent metastable process is the evaporation of one neutral NH3 monomer from protonated clusters (NH3) n ? 2NH 4 + . Abundance of homogeneous vs. protonated cluster ions and of metastable fragments are reported as a function of photon energy and cluster size up ton=10.  相似文献

We present a detailed quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) study of the dynamics corresponding to the reaction H + LiH proceeding via depletion and H‐exchange paths on a new potential energy surface of the electronic ground state. The effects of collision energy and reagent initial vibrational excitation on the reaction probability and cross sections are studied over a wide range of collision energies. The QCT‐calculated reaction probability and cross sections are in good agreement with previous time‐dependent wave packet results. More importantly, we found that the vibrational excitation of LiH molecule inhibits the LiH depletion reaction, whereas it promotes the H‐exchange reaction. In addition, the differential cross sections calculated for the depletion reaction at different collision energies and excitation states indicate a strong forward scattering of the product molecule H2. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
