A Banach space is said to have the diameter two property if every non-empty relatively weakly open subset of its unit ball has diameter two. We prove that the projective tensor product of two Banach spaces whose centralizer is infinite-dimensional has the diameter two property. The same statement also holds for if the centralizer of X is infinite-dimensional and the unit sphere of Y? contains an element of numerical index one. We provide examples of classical Banach spaces satisfying the assumptions of the results. If K is any infinite compact Hausdorff topological space, then has the diameter two property for any nonzero Banach space Y. We also provide a result on the diameter two property for the injective tensor product.  相似文献

If X is a Banach space with a normalized unconditional Schauder basis (xn), we define whenever and obtain estimates for μX,(xn) when every continuous m-homogeneous polynomial from X into Y is absolutely (q,1) summing. Our results provide new information on coincidence situations between the space of absolutely summing m-homogeneous polynomials and the whole space of continuous m-homogeneous polynomials. In particular, when m=1, we obtain new contributions to the linear theory of absolutely summing operators.  相似文献

We study the existence of atomic decompositions for tensor products of Banach spaces and spaces of homogeneous polynomials. If a Banach space X admits an atomic decomposition of a certain kind, we show that the symmetrized tensor product of the elements of the atomic decomposition provides an atomic decomposition for the symmetric tensor product , for any symmetric tensor norm μ. In addition, the reciprocal statement is investigated and analogous consequences for the full tensor product are obtained. Finally we apply the previous results to establish the existence of monomial atomic decompositions for certain ideals of polynomials on X.  相似文献

We characterize the class of separable Banach spaces X such that for every continuous function and for every continuous function there exists a C1 smooth function for which |f(x)−g(x)|?ε(x) and g(x)≠0 for all xX (that is, g has no critical points), as those infinite-dimensional Banach spaces X with separable dual X. We also state sufficient conditions on a separable Banach space so that the function g can be taken to be of class Cp, for p=1,2,…,+∞. In particular, we obtain the optimal order of smoothness of the approximating functions with no critical points on the classical spaces ?p(N) and Lp(Rn). Some important consequences of the above results are (1) the existence of a non-linear Hahn-Banach theorem and the smooth approximation of closed sets, on the classes of spaces considered above; and (2) versions of all these results for a wide class of infinite-dimensional Banach manifolds.  相似文献

In this article we study the evaluation of symmetric functions on the alphabet of contents of a partition. Applying this notion of content evaluation to the computation of central characters of the symmetric group, we are led to the definition of a new basis of the algebra Λ of symmetric functions over that we call the basis of class symmetric functions.By definition this basis provides an algebra isomorphism between Λ and the Farahat-Higman algebra FH governing for all n the products of conjugacy classes in the center of the group algebra of the symmetric group . We thus obtain a calculus of all connexion coefficients of inside Λ. As expected, taking the homogeneous components of maximal degree in class symmetric functions, we recover the symmetric functions introduced by Macdonald to describe top connexion coefficients.We also discuss the relation of class symmetric functions to the asymptotic of central characters and of the enumeration of standard skew young tableaux. Finally we sketch the extension of these results to Hecke algebras.  相似文献

We show that if X is a nonlocally convex natural quasi-Banach space with symmetric basis whose Banach envelope is isomorphic to ?1, then all symmetric bases of X are equivalent. It is shown that for the separable dual X of a Banach space X, if X has the weak approximation property, then X has the metric weak approximation property. We introduce the properties WD and MWD for Banach spaces. Suppose that M is a closed subspace of a Banach space X such that M is complemented in the dual space X, where for all mM}. A new matrix based iterative method is presented to compute common symmetric solution or common symmetric least-squares solution of the pair of matrix equations AXB = E and CXD = F. By this iterative method, for any initial matrix X0, a solution X can be obtained within finite iteration steps if exact arithmetic was used, and the solution X with the minimum Frobenius norm can be obtained by choosing a special kind of initial matrix. In addition, the unique nearest common symmetric solution or common symmetric least-squares solution to given matrix in Frobenius norm can be obtained by first finding the minimum Frobenius norm common symmetric solution or common symmetric least-squares solution of the new pair of matrix equations. The given numerical examples show that the matrix based iterative method proposed in this paper has faster convergence than the iterative methods proposed in [1] and [2] to solve the same problems.  相似文献

“The axiom of choice states that any set X of non-empty sets has a choice function—i.e. a function satisfying f(x)∈x for all xX. When we want to generalise this to a topos, we have to choose what we mean by non-empty, since in , the three concepts non-empty, inhabited, and injective are equivalent, so the axiom of choice can be thought of as any of the three statements made by replacing “non-empty” by one of these notions.It seems unnatural to use non-empty in an intuitionistic context, so the first interpretation to be used in topos theory was the notion based on inhabited objects. However, Diaconescu (1975) [1] showed that this interpretation implied the law of the excluded middle, and that without the law of the excluded middle, even the finite version of the axiom of choice does not hold! Nevertheless some people still view this as the most appropriate formulation of the axiom of choice in a topos.In this paper, we study the formulation based upon injective objects. We argue that it can be considered a more natural formulation of the axiom of choice in a topos, and that it does not have the undesirable consequences of the inhabited formulation. We show that if it holds for , then it holds in a wide variety of topoi, including all localic topoi. It also has some of the classical consequences of the axiom of choice, although a lot of classical results rely on both the axiom of choice and the law of the excluded middle. An additional advantage of this formulation is that it can be defined for a slightly more general class of categories than just topoi.We also examine the corresponding injective formulations of Zorn’s lemma and the well-order principle. The injective form of Zorn’s lemma is equivalent to the axiom of injective choice, and the injective well-order principle implies the axiom of injective choice.  相似文献

Given a local homeomorphism where UX is clopen and X is a compact and Hausdorff topological space, we obtain the possible transfer operators Lρ which may occur for given by α(f)=fσ. We obtain examples of partial dynamical systems (XA,σA) such that the construction of the covariance algebra C(XA,σA), proposed by B.K. Kwasniewski, and the crossed product by a partial endomorphism O(XA,α,L), recently introduced by the author and R. We study the Pettis integral for multi-functions defined on a complete probability space (Ω,Σ,μ) with values into the family cwk(X) of all convex weakly compact non-empty subsets of a separable Banach space X. From the notion of Pettis integrability for such an F studied in the literature one readily infers that if we embed cwk(X) into ?(BX) by means of the mapping defined by j(C)(x)=sup(x(C)), then jF is integrable with respect to a norming subset of B?(BX). A natural question arises: When is jF Pettis integrable? In this paper we answer this question by proving that the Pettis integrability of any cwk(X)-valued function F is equivalent to the Pettis integrability of jF if and only if X has the Schur property that is shown to be equivalent to the fact that cwk(X) is separable when endowed with the Hausdorff distance. We complete the paper with some sufficient conditions (involving stability in Talagrand's sense) that ensure the Pettis integrability of jF for a given Pettis integrable cwk(X)-valued function F.  相似文献

Kuratowski and Ryll-Nardzewski's theorem about the existence of measurable selectors for multi-functions is one of the keystones for the study of set-valued integration; one of the drawbacks of this result is that separability is always required for the range space. In this paper we study Pettis integrability for multi-functions and we obtain a Kuratowski and Ryll-Nardzewski's type selection theorem without the requirement of separability for the range space. Being more precise, we show that any Pettis integrable multi-function F:Ωcwk(X) defined in a complete finite measure space (Ω,Σ,μ) with values in the family cwk(X) of all non-empty convex weakly compact subsets of a general (non-necessarily separable) Banach space X always admits Pettis integrable selectors and that, moreover, for each AΣ the Pettis integral coincides with the closure of the set of integrals over A of all Pettis integrable selectors of F. As a consequence we prove that if X is reflexive then every scalarly measurable multi-function F:Ωcwk(X) admits scalarly measurable selectors; the latter is also proved when (X,w) is angelic and has density character at most ω1. In each of these two situations the Pettis integrability of a multi-function F:Ωcwk(X) is equivalent to the uniform integrability of the family . Results about norm-Borel measurable selectors for multi-functions satisfying stronger measurability properties but without the classical requirement of the range Banach space being separable are also obtained.  相似文献

Any continuous map T on a compact metric space X induces in a natural way a continuous map on the space K(X) of all non-empty compact subsets of X. Let T be a homeomorphism on the interval or on the circle. It is proved that the topological entropy of the induced set valued map is zero or infinity. Moreover, the topological entropy of is zero, where C(X) denotes the space of all non-empty compact and connected subsets of X.
