Gas flow and heat transfer on the surfaces of sharp and blunt plates is experimentally investigated in the presence of two forward-looking wedges at the Mach numbers M = 5, 6, and 8 and the Reynolds numbers up to ReL = 27×106. It is shown that the entropy layer generated by a small bluntness of the leading edge of the plate can considerably change the heat transfer, the gas pressure, and the friction in the zone of interference of the shock with the plate boundary layer. Under certain conditions a small plate bluntness can also lead to a qualitative change in the flow structure. The effect of constriction of the channel between the wedges on the interference flow is studied.

An experimental study on heat transfer enhancement for a turbulent natural convection boundary layer in air along a vertical flat plate has been performed by inserting a long flat plate in the spanwise direction (simple heat transfer promoter) and short flat plates aligned in the spanwise direction (split heat transfer promoter) with clearances into the near-wall region of the boundary layer. For a simple heat transfer promoter, the heat transfer coefficients increase by a peak value of approximately 37% in the downstream region of the promoter compared with those in the usual turbulent natural convection boundary layer. It is found from flow visualization and simultaneous measurements of the flow and thermal fields with hot- and cold-wires that such increase of heat transfer coefficients is mainly caused by the deflection of flows toward the outer region of the boundary layer and the invasion of low-temperature fluids from the outer region to the near-wall region with large-scale vortex motions riding out the promoter. However, heat transfer coefficients for a split heat transfer promoter exhibit an increase in peak value of approximately 60% in the downstream region of the promoter. Flow visualization and PIV measurements show that such remarkable heat transfer enhancement is attributed to longitudinal vortices generated by flows passing through the clearances of the promoter in addition to large-scale vortex motions riding out the promoter. Consequently, it is concluded that heat transfer enhancement of the turbulent natural convection boundary layer can be substantially achieved in a wide area of the turbulent natural convection boundary layer by employing multiple column split heat transfer promoters. It may be expected that the heat transfer enhancement in excess of approximately 40% can be accomplished by inserting such promoters.

In this study, the effect of heat transfer on the compressible turbulent shear layer and shockwave interaction in a scramjet has been investigated. To this end, highly resolved Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are performed to explore the effect of wall thermal conditions on the behavior of a reattaching free shear layer interacting with an oblique shock in compressible turbulent flows. Various wall-to-recovery temperature ratios are considered, and results are compared to the adiabatic wall. It is found that the wall temperature affects the reattachment location and the shock behavior in the interaction region. Furthermore, fluctuating heat flux exhibits a strong intermittent behavior with severe heat transfer compared to the mean, characterized by scattered spots. The distribution of the Stanton number shows a strong heat transfer and complex pattern within the interaction, with the maximum thermal (heat transfer rates) and dynamic loads (root-mean-square wall pressure) found for the case of the cold wall. The analysis of LES data reveals that the thermal boundary condition can significantly impact the wall pressure fluctuations level. The primary mechanism for changes in the flow unsteadiness due to the wall thermal condition is linked to the reattaching shear layer, which agrees with the compressible turbulent boundary layer theory.

The results of an experimental and numerical investigation of flow and heat transfer in the region of the interaction between an incident oblique shock and turbulent boundary layers on sharp and blunt plates are presented for the Mach numbers M = 5 and 6 and the Reynolds numbers ReL = 27×106 and 14×106. The plate bluntness and the incident shock position were varied. It is shown that the maximum Stanton number St m in the shock incidence zone decreases with increase in the plate bluntness radius r to a certain value and then varies only slightly with further increase in r. In the case of a turbulent undisturbed boundary layer heat transfer is diminished with increase in r more slowly than in the case of a laminar undisturbed flow. In the presence of an incident shock the bluntness of the leading edge of the flat plate results in a greater decrease in the Stanton number than in the absence of the shock. With increase in the bluntness of the leading edge of the plate the separation zone first sharply lengthens and then decreases in size or remains constant.

A boundary layer analysis is presented to investigate numerically the effects of radiation, thermophoresis and the dimensionless heat generation or absorption on hydromagnetic flow with heat and mass transfer over a flat surface in a porous medium. The boundary layer equations are transformed to non-linear ordinary differential equations using scaling group of transformations and they are solved numerically by using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method with shooting technique for some values of physical parameters.Comparisons with previously published work are performed and the results are found to be in very good agreement. Many results are obtained and a representative set is displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of the various parameters on the dimensionless velocity, temperature and concentration profiles as well as the local skin-friction coefficient, wall heat transfer, particle deposition rate and wall thermophoretic deposition velocity. The results show that the magnetic field induces acceleration of the flow, rather than deceleration(as in classical magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) boundary layer flow) but to reduce temperature and increase concentration of particles in boundary layer. Also, there is a strong dependency of the concentration in the boundary layer on both the Schmidt number and mass transfer parameter.

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) results are used to establish the effect of convex streamwise curvature on the development of turbulent boundary layers, and the effect of such curvature on the forced-convection heat transfer variations observed at certain supercritical thermodynamic states. The results illustrate the stabilizing effects of this flow geometry through modification of the structure and distribution of hairpin-like vortical flow structures in the boundary layer. Furthermore, enhancement of convective heat transfer realized at a particular heat flux-to-mass flux ratio with the working fluid at a supercritical state is observed to be reduced by the stabilizing effect of convex surface curvature.

The distributions of the pressure, friction, and heat transfer coefficients in the separation zone of a laminar boundary layer ahead of a wedge on a plate are calculated approximately. The integral method of Cohen and Reshotko is used to calculate the flow in the boundary layer.

The flow structure and heat exchange in the zone of interference between an inclined shock and the surface of a flat plate are investigated experimentally and theoretically as functions of many parameters, the interference being studied in both the presence and the absence of bluntness of the leading edge. The experiments were carried out at Mach numbers M = 6, 8, and 10 and the Reynolds numbers Re L , calculated using the plate length L = 120 mm and the free-stream parameters, varied over the range from 0.24 ? 106 to 1.31 ? 106. The bluntness radius of the leading edge of the plate, the intensity of the impinging shock, and its location with respect to the leading edge were varied. The numerical simulation was carried out by solving the complete two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and averaged Reynolds equations using the q-ω turbulence model. The laminar boundary layer became turbulent inside the separation zone induced by the shock. It is shown that the plate bluntness significantly reduces the heat exchange intensity in the interference zone, this effect intensifying with increase in the Mach number.

When the air temperature reaches 600 K or higher, vibration is excited. The specific heat is not a constant but a function of temperature. Under this condition, the transition position of hypersonic sharp wedge boundary layer is predicted by using the improved eN method considering variable specific heat. The transition positions with different Mach numbers of oncoming flow, half wedge angles, and wall conditions are computed condition, the nearer to the Mach number The results show that for the same oncoming flow condition and wall transition positions of hypersonic sharp wedge boundary layer move much leading edge than those of the flat plate. The greater the oncoming flow the closer the transition position to the leading edge.

The effect of an ultrasonically-absorptive coating on laminar-turbulent transition on cones with different nose bluntnesses is experimentally investigated. The experiments were performed with a cone with the semi-vertex angle of 7° set at zero incidence in the Mach 8 flow for three Reynolds numbers. A material with a chaotic micropore structure was used as the ultrasonically-absorptive coating. One side of the model, along its generator, was coated with the porous material, while the second represented a rigid surface. The laminar-turbulent transition location was determined from the results of heat flux distribution measurements. The heat flux fluctuations were also measured on the model surface. It was found that the laminar region length increased with an increase in the bluntness radius. The ultrasonically-absorptive coating with a chaotic microstructure effectively stabilizes the boundary layer for all bluntness radii considered, increasing the laminar region length by 30 to 85%.

Boundary layer receptivity to two-dimensional slow and fast acoustic waves is investigated by solving Navier–Stokes equations for Mach 4.5 flow over a flat plate with a finite-thickness leading edge. Higher order spatial and temporal schemes are employed to obtain the solution whereby the flat-plate leading edge region is resolved by providing a sufficiently refined grid. The results show that the instability waves are generated in the leading edge region and that the boundary-layer is much more receptive to slow acoustic waves (by almost a factor of 20) as compared to the fast waves. Hence, this leading-edge receptivity mechanism is expected to be more relevant in the transition process for high Mach number flows where second mode instability is dominant. Computations are performed to investigate the effect of leading-edge thickness and it is found that bluntness tends to stabilize the boundary layer. Furthermore, the relative significance of fast acoustic waves is enhanced in the presence of bluntness. The effect of acoustic wave incidence angle is also studied and it is found that the receptivity of the boundary layer on the ‘windward’ side (with respect to the acoustic forcing) decreases by more than a factor of four when the incidence angle is increased from 0° to 45°. However, the receptivity coefficient for the ‘leeward’ side is found to vary relatively weakly with the incidence angle.

The influence of small cylindrical bluntness of the leading edge of a flat plate on formation of spatial structures in a nominally two-dimensional supersonic compression corner flow at the Mach number M∞ ≈ 8 and a laminar state of the undisturbed boundary layer is studied by the method of temperature-sensitive paints. Streamwise vortices are found in the region of reattachment of the separated flow in a wide range of Reynolds numbers (0.15 · 106–2.55 · 106) for various angles of flow deflection and plate lengths. It is demonstrated that the existence of these vortices induces spanwise oscillations of the heat transfer coefficient; the amplitude of these oscillations may reach 30%. The maximum deviations of the Stanton number reaching 80% are observed in the case with significant roughness of the leading edge of the flat plate. Both the maximum Stanton numbers in the reattachment region and the amplitude of spanwise oscillations of the Stanton number induced by streamwise vortices are found to decrease significantly in the case of small bluntness of the leading edge. Solutions of three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations are obtained for some test conditions. The computed results are in good agreement with experimental data, which points to a significant stabilizing effect of small bluntness on the intensity of streamwise vortices.

Abstract. In this paper, we consider the phenomenon of unsteady Mach reflection generated by a plane shock wave advancing over a straight wedge surface, with particular attention to the deviation of the flow field from the self-similar nature. We examine the observed change in angle between incident and reflected shocks, which is in contrast to the fact that the angle should remain constant with time in a self-similar flow. The effect of the boundary layer behind the advancing shock wave over the surface of the wedge is considered to cause this, and boundary layer theory is utilized to estimate the thickness of the layer. It is found that the thickness increases as to the time t compared with t by the overall expansion in the self-similar flow. Assuming that the thicker boundary layer is effectively equivalent to a change in wedge angle, the effect of the boundary layer on the flow field should be less in later stages with larger t values in accordance with the observation above. The heat transfer to sharp and slightly blunted flat plates in the zone of oblique shock incidence has been experimentally investigated. The experiments were performed at the Mach numbers M = 6, 8, and 10 and Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.2 × 106 to 1.3 × 106 corresponding to transitional (laminar-turbulent) flow in the shock-induced separation zone. Emphasis is placed on small values of the bluntness radius r. It is established that there exists a threshold value r th of the radius that bounds the range of its influence on the heat transfer, namely, an increase in r to r th leads to a sharp reduction in the maximum heat transfer coefficient in the interference zone, whereas a further increase (beyond r th) has only a slight effect on the maximum heat transfer coefficient. The dependence of r th on the main hypersonic flow parameters is analyzed. an explanation of the observable phenomena is given.

In this paper, the problem of unsteady axisymmetric boundary layer flow and heat transfer induced by a permeable shrinking sheet in the presence of radiation effect is studied. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically by an implicit finite‐difference scheme known as the Keller‐box method. The influence of radiation, unsteadiness and mass suction parameters on the reduced skin friction coefficient f′′(0) and the heat transfer coefficient ?θ′(0), as well as the velocity and temperature profiles are presented and discussed in detail. It is found that dual solutions exist and suction parameter delays the separation of boundary layer. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A study was performed of methods for controlling thermal regimes in a spatial supersonic flow around a blunt body with the simultaneous use of gas injection from the surface of the porous bluntness and heat flow in the shell material. The effect of the nonisothermicity of the shell wall on the heat and masstransfer characteristics in the boundary layer was taken into account by solution of the problem in a conjugate formulation. It is shown that heat conducting materials can be used to advantage to reduce the maximum temperatures in the screen zone.

An analysis is performed to study the heat transfer characteristics of steady two-dimensional boundary layer flow past a moving permeable flat plate in a nanofluid. The effects of uniform suction and injection on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics are numerically studied by using an implicit finite difference method. It is found that dual solutions exist when the plate and the free stream move in the opposite directions. The results indicate that suction delays the boundary layer separation, while injection accelerates it.

The unsteady boundary layer over a semi-infinite flat plate was investigated in this paper. The flow involves the unsteady flow over a flat plate with leading edge accretion or ablation. The momentum boundary layer was further analyzed and it was shown that the leading edge ablation had a similar effect to the wall mass injection or upstream wall movement making the fluid blown away from the wall. The thermal boundary layer of the same flow was also studied. Results show that the leading edge accretion or ablation can greatly change the fluid motion and the heat transfer characteristics.
