The theory for designing distributed piezoelectric modal sensors is well established for beam structures. However, the current modal sensor theory is limited in scope in that it can only be applied in the case of classical boundary conditions (i.e., either clamped, free, simply supported or sliding). In this paper a solution to the problem of finding the shape of piezoelectric modal sensors for a beam with arbitrary boundary conditions is proposed, using the Adomian decomposition method (ADM). A general expression for designing the shape of a piezoelectric modal sensor is presented, in which the output signal of the designed sensor is proportional to the response of the target mode. Other modes are filtered out. The modal sensor shape is expressed as a function of the second spatial derivative of the structural mode shape function. Based on the ADM and employing some simple mathematical operations, the closed-form series solution of the second spatial derivative of the mode shapes can be determined. Then the shapes of the designed modal sensors are obtained. Finally, some numerical examples are given to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed modal sensors. It is shown that, for classical boundary conditions, the shapes of the modal sensors based on the ADM agree well with analytical and numerical results given in the literature. For general boundary conditions it is found that the shape of the modal sensors is influenced by the number of modes of interest because the second spatial derivatives of the mode shapes are not orthogonal to one another. The modal sensors for general boundary conditions can be considered as modal filters within a limited frequency band.  相似文献

The topic of non-destructively detecting localised damage in plates is addressed in this article. Since the presence of a crack or a delamination causes a discontinuity in the mode shape first derivatives, a numerical method for detecting discontinuities in smooth piecewise functions and their derivatives, based on a polynomial-annihilation technique is presented. The method, already proposed for beam-type structures, has been extended to enable the detection and localisation of damage in plate-like structures for which only post-damage mode shapes are available. Applying finite element analysis, the mode shapes of an isotropic plate with a saw-cut and a multi-layered composite plate with a delamination have been calculated and the performance of the approach evaluated for increasing amounts of noise. Encouraging results indicate that further development of the technique for non-destructive testing of plate-like structures would be highly worthwhile.  相似文献

In this paper a solution to the problem of finding the shape of piezoelectric modal sensors for a cantilever beam with intermediate support is proposed by using the differential transformation method (DTM). A general expression for designing the shape of a piezoelectric modal sensor is presented, in which the output signal of the designed sensor is proportional to the response of the target mode. Other modes are filtered out. The modal sensor shape is expressed as a linear function of the second spatial derivative of the structural mode shape function. By using boundary condition and continuity condition equations at intermediate support, the closed-form series solution of the second spatial derivative of the mode shapes can be determined based on DTM. Then the shapes of the designed modal sensors are obtained. Finally, numerical examples are given to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed modal sensors for the cantilever beam with intermediate support.  相似文献

Modal parameters of structures are often used as inputs for finite element model updating, vibration control, structural design or structural health monitoring (SHM). In order to test the robustness of these methods, it is a common practice to introduce uncertainty on the eigenfrequencies and modal damping coefficients under the form of a Gaussian perturbation, while the uncertainty on the mode shapes is modeled in the form of independent Gaussian noise at each measured location. A more rigorous approach consists however in adding uncorrelated noise on the time domain responses at each sensor before proceeding to an operational modal analysis. In this paper, we study in detail the resulting uncertainty when modal analysis is performed using the stochastic subspace identification method. A Monte-Carlo simulation is performed on a simply supported beam, and the uncertainty on a set of 5000 modal parameters identified with the stochastic subspace identification method is discussed. Next, 4000 experimental modal identifications of a small clamped–free steel plate equipped with 8 piezoelectric patches are performed in order to confirm the conclusions drawn in the numerical case study. In particular, the results point out that the uncertainty on eigenfrequencies and modal damping coefficients may exhibit a non-normal distribution, and that there is a non-negligible spatial correlation between the uncertainty on mode shapes at sensors of different locations.  相似文献

Calculation of bend loss for single-mode graded-index fibers utilizes the fundamental modal field. Using some of the single and two parameter scalar variational approximations available in the literature for this mode, the bend loss has been computed. The exact results are obtained using a well known numerical method. The accuracies of the results obtained from the use of these variational fields have been compared.  相似文献

This paper describes a procedure for detecting structural damage based on a micro-genetic algorithm using incomplete and noisy modal test data. As the number of sensors used to measure modal data is normally small when compared with the degrees of freedom of the finite element model of the structure, the incomplete mode shape data are first expanded to match with all degrees of freedom of the finite element model under consideration. The elemental energy quotient difference is then employed to locate the damage domain approximately. Finally, a micro-genetic algorithm is used to quantify the damage extent by minimizing the errors between the measured data and numerical results. The process may be either of single-level or implemented through two-level search strategies. The study has covered the use of frequencies only and the combined use of both frequencies and mode shapes. The proposed method is applied to a single-span simply supported beam and a three-span continuous beam with multiple damage locations. In the study, the modal test data are simulated numerically using the finite element method. The measurement errors of modal data are simulated by superimposing random noise with appropriate magnitudes. The effectiveness of using frequencies and both frequencies and mode shapes as the data for quantification of damage extent are examined. The effects of incomplete and noisy modal test data on the accuracy of damage detection are also discussed.  相似文献

In the context of finite element model updating using output-only vibration test data, natural frequencies and mode shapes are used as validation criteria. Consequently, the correct pairing of experimentally obtained and numerically derived natural frequencies and mode shapes is important. In many cases, only limited spatial information is available and noise is present in the measurements. Therefore, the automatic selection of the most likely numerical mode shape corresponding to a particular experimentally identified mode shape can be a difficult task. The most common criterion for indicating corresponding mode shapes is the modal assurance criterion. Unfortunately, this criterion fails in certain cases and is not reliable for automatic approaches. In this paper, the purely mathematical modal assurance criterion will be enhanced by additional physical information from the numerical model in terms of modal strain energies. A numerical example and a benchmark study with experimental data are presented to show the advantages of the proposed energy-based criterion in comparison to the traditional modal assurance criterion.  相似文献

Previous investigations have used Hankel transforms to establish the velocity potentials of the wave fields resulting from arbitrary angle plane wave impingement on a circular orifice in a rigid, thick wall. The scattered field from the orifice is examined, in particular the modal contributions to the amplitude of its velocity potential. For each m,n mode the amplitude is dependent upon the amplitude of the in-orifice waves and a driving term unique to each m,n mode. In establishing the amplitudes of the in-orifice waves, the effects of modal coupling are also considered. In this work these two components of the scattered wave amplitude are investigated on a modal basis and approximations given for coupling effects. These approximations are then used to calculate the scattered field and the results compared with conventional solutions that use full modal coupling.  相似文献

One of the problems encountered in performing modal analysis is the identification of different modes occurring at close natural frequencies. This paper proposes to face such a problem by an original application of the modal assurance criterion (MAC) that is typically used to verify the reliability of numerical structural models by evaluating the correspondence between numerical and experimental mode shapes. To properly apply the MAC, experimental mode shapes must be retrieved acquiring data at a high number of experimental points suitably distributed on the surface of the structure. Using usual modal analysis techniques based on pointwise transducers, difficulties can be encountered to retrieve mode shapes with the required spatial resolution. In order to overcome such difficulties, Speckle interferometry techniques can be used. This paperproposes a procedure based on the application of a highly reliable MAC evaluated by time average Speckle interferometry for recognising the modes contributing to the stationary vibration patterns. The results obtained from the modal analysis of a thin square plate have shown that the proposed procedure is capable of pointing out the component modes.  相似文献

The existence of eccentricity of the central hole for an annular plate results in a significant change in the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the structure. In this paper, the vibration analysis of annular-like plates is presented based on numerical and experimental approaches. Using the finite element analysis code Nastran, the effects of the eccentricity, hole size and boundary condition on vibration modes are investigated systematically through both global and local analyses. The results show that analyses for perfect symmetric conditions can still roughly predict the mode shapes of “recessive” modes of the plate with a slightly eccentric hole. They will, however, lead to erroneous results for “dominant” modes. In addition, the residual displacement mode shape is verified as an effective parameter for identifying damage occurring in plate-like structures. Experimental modal analysis on a clamped-free annular-like plate is performed, and the results obtained reveal good agreement with those obtained by numerical analysis. This study provides guidance on modal analysis, vibration measurement and damage detection of plate-like structures.  相似文献

A method for damage estimation of a bridge structure is presented using ambient vibration data caused by the traffic loadings. The procedure consists of identification of the operational modal properties and the assessment of damage locations and severities. An experimental study is carried out on a bridge model with a composite cross-section subjected to vehicle loadings. Vertical accelerations of the bridge deck are measured while vehicles are running. The modal parameters are identified from the free-decay signals extracted using the random decrement method. The damage assessment is carried out based on the estimated modal parameters using the neural networks technique. As input to the neural networks, the ratios of the resonant frequencies between before and after damages and the mode shapes after the damages are used to take into account the mass effect of the traffic on the bridge. The identified damage locations and severities agree reasonably well with the inflicted damages on the structure.  相似文献

This paper presents a model formulation capable of analyzing large-amplitude free vibrations of a suspended cable in three dimensions. The virtual work-energy functional is used to obtain the non-linear equations of three-dimensional motion. The formulation is not restricted to cables having small sag-to-span ratios, and is conveniently applied for the case of a specified end tension. The axial extensibility effect is also included in order to obtain accurate results. Based on a multi-degree-of-freedom model, numerical procedures are implemented to solve both spatial and temporal problems. Various numerical examples of arbitrarily sagged cables with large-amplitude initial conditions are carried out to highlight some outstanding features of cable non-linear dynamics by accounting also for internal resonance phenomena. Non-linear coupling between three- and two-dimensional motions, and non-linear cable tension responses are analyzed. For specific cables, modal transition phenomena taking place during in-plane vibrations and ensuing from occurrence of a dominant internal resonance are observed. When only a single mode is initiated, a higher or lower mode can be accommodated into the responses, making cable spatial shapes hybrid in some time intervals.  相似文献

An adjoint perturbative method is used to derive expressions for the first- through third-order derivatives of a pressure field with respect to sound speed, density, and frequency, for the restricted case of a laterally homogenous waveguide in which environmental parameters are only a function of depth. By using a normal-mode Green's function, the three-dimensional spatial correlation required by the standard acoustic adjoint equation can be reduced to a set of one-dimensional depth integrals. The resulting expressions for the first-order derivative are similar to those obtained by previous perturbative approaches based on the depth-separated wave equation, but the approach followed here permits straightforward extension to higher-order derivatives. Explicit evaluations of the expressions for a representative shallow-water waveguide model are in excellent agreement with numerical finite-difference computations. An analysis of the expressions as a function of source-receiver range finds the contributions to the mode amplitude derivatives to be non-negligible at ranges less than a few modal interference lengths, for parameters associated with the ocean bottom. Therefore, linear perturbative inversion methods that perturb only horizontal wavenumbers and not mode amplitudes should either be used with caution or modified to incorporate the expressions presented here.  相似文献

A rigorous truncation error analysis of three-point finite difference approximations for optical waveguides with step-wise refractive index discontinuities is given. As the basis for the analysis we use the exact coefficients of the series that expresses the field value at a given finite difference node in terms of the field value and its derivatives at a neighbouring node. This series is applied to develop a rigorous formalism for the truncation error analysis of the three-point finite difference approximations used in the numerical modelling of light propagation in optical waveguides with step-wise discontinuities of the refractive index profile. The results show that the approximations reach O(h2) truncation error only asymptotically for sufficiently small values of the mesh size.  相似文献

In this paper a new procedure, addressed as Interpolation Damage Detecting Method (IDDM), is investigated as a possible mean for early detection and location of light damage in a structure struck by an earthquake. Damage is defined in terms of the accuracy of a spline function in interpolating the operational mode shapes (ODS) of the structure. At a certain location a decrease (statistically meaningful) of accuracy, with respect to a reference configuration, points out a localized variation of the operational shapes thus revealing the existence of damage. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to a numerical model of a multistory frame, simulating a damaged condition through a reduction of the story stiffness. Several damage scenarios have been considered and the results indicate the effectiveness of the method to assess and localize damage for the case of concentrated damage and for low to medium levels of noise in the recorded signals. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm is that it does not require a numerical model of the structure as well as an intense data post-processing or user interaction. The ODS are calculated from Frequency Response Functions hence responses recorded on the structure can be directly used without the need of modal identification. Furthermore, the local character of the feature chosen to detect damage makes the IDDM less sensitive to noise and to environmental changes with respect to other damage detection methods. For these reasons the IDDM appears as a valid option for automated post-earthquake damage assessment, able to provide after an earthquake, reliable information about the location of damage.  相似文献

This paper discusses the experimentally measured free–free dynamics of three small-scale vibration isolator models: two single-stage isolators and one two-stage isolator. The first comprises two steel plates and one rubber element, the second two steel plates and four rubber elements, and the third three steel plates and eight rubber elements. The natural frequencies, mode shapes and associated modal damping derived from curve-fitting procedures applied to the measured frequency-response functions (FRFs) are presented. The modal behaviour of the isolators is more complicated than might at first be assumed, a major feature being significant coupling between different degrees of freedom. The modal properties can be used to reconstruct a complete set of FRFs for the isolator, including FRFs which were not measured directly. Vibration isolators are often characterised through the use of four-pole parameters or various transmissibilities, and so methods for calculating these parameters from the reconstructed FRFs are also given.  相似文献

The classic experimental modal analysis (EMA) is a well-known procedure for determining the modal parameters. The less frequently used strain EMA is based on a response measurement using strain sensors. The results of a strain EMA are the modal parameters, where in addition to the displacement mode shapes the strain mode shapes are also identified. The strain EMA can be used for an experimental investigation of a stress–strain distribution without the need to build a dynamical model. It can also be used to determine the modal parameters when, during modal testing, a motion sensor cannot be used and so a strain sensor is used instead. The displacement and strain mode shapes that are determined with the strain EMA are not mass normalized (scaled with respect to the orthogonality properties of the mass-normalized modal matrix), and therefore some dynamical properties of the system cannot be obtained. The mass normalization can be made with the classic EMA, which requires the use of a motion sensor. In this research a new approach to the mass normalization in the strain EMA, without using a motion sensor, is presented. It is based on the recently introduced mass-change structural modification method, which is used for the mass normalization in an operational modal analysis. This method was modified in such a way that it can be used for the mass normalization in the strain EMA. The mass-normalized displacement and strain mode shapes were obtained using a combination of the proposed approach and the strain EMA. The proposed approach was validated on real structures (beam and plate).  相似文献

This paper describes theoretical and experimental investigations into the sound absorption and transmission properties of micro-perforated panels (MPP) backed by an air cavity and a thin plate. A fully coupled modal approach is proposed to calculate the absorption coefficient and the transmission loss of finite-sized micro-perforated panels-cavity-panel (MPPCP) partitions with conservative boundary conditions. It is validated against infinite partition models and experimental data. A practical methodology is proposed using collocated pressure-velocity sensors to evaluate in an anechoic environment the transmission and absorption properties of conventional MPPCPs. Results show under which conditions edge scattering effects should be accounted for at low frequencies. Coupled mode analysis is also performed and analytical approximations are derived from the resonance frequencies and mode shapes of a flexible MPPCP. It is found that the Helmholtz-type resonance frequency is deduced from the one associated to the rigidly backed MPPCP absorber shifted up by the mass-air mass resonance of the flexible non-perforated double-panel. Moreover, it is shown analytically and experimentally that the absorption mechanisms at the resonances are governed by a large air-frame relative velocity over the MPP surface, with either in-phase or out-of-phase relationships, depending on the MPPCP parameters.  相似文献

This work formulates the acoustical performance prediction on a single-inlet/double-outlet cylindrical expansion-chamber muffler. Expressions for the transmission loss (TL) of the muffler are formulated by using the modal meshing approach and the plane wave theory, respectively. The parametric influence upon the values of TL for this kind of muffler is numerically analyzed for various cases of length-diameter ratio, and the computed results of TL are compared to present the higher order mode effects. The results by the modal meshing approach are also compared with the finite element method to verify its accuracy.  相似文献
